Quote: The Calling (7) : A beautiful melody drift on the air from somewhere far away. The vocals are in a language you don’t quite recognize, but feel somehow familiar to you. Something about the song calls to you, but no matter where you go, the song seems to sound the same distance away. The longer it goes on, the more emotional the song becomes--and the more emotional you become. Something about the song is possessive and consuming, like it’s all you can think of. Something resonates in you as the song crescendos, and the feeling is at its strongest--be they good, bad, anything, but suddenly the song fades, and there’s only an emptiness inside of you. The feeling of loss is strong, and can leave someone feeling emotionally numb. Someone out there was calling to you, and you couldn’t find them. The ice cream was absolutely delicious. It wasn’t so thick or rich that it was impossible to finish a two scoop waffle cone, rather the consistency left her feeling completely satisfied when it was time to leave. They had been chit chatting for almost an hour on topics ranging from phone numbers to nicknames, so they didn’t get confused if someone shouted Melody in a crowd, and how Mellie was settling in. It seemed that by the time the cashier began counting her till, all of the other patrons had already left and they were the only ones keeping her from closing up for the night. Melz rose from her seat, gathered the remnants of their deserts and tossed the napkins and receipt in the trash. “Thank you!” She waved to the cashier who smiled politely and followed them to the door so she could lock it behind them and switch the sign over to ‘closed’. “Thank you for dessert, I’m glad you suggested it.”

“Of course! Thank you for coming with me. It was a lot of fun...all of tonight has been a lot of fun.” Tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, Melody stifled a yawn. “I’m not used to being out so late anymore. I’m getting old.” She laughed, only slightly self deprecating...but...it was true. She was old. Her drivers license said that she was thirty four and...well.
Perhaps she needed to start acting like it. But. That could come later...this was acting like it, wasn’t it? Dessert with a pretty friend was acting like a responsible adult. And she had even paid...though. QA job would be needed to keep being able to pay but...that could come later too.
“Do you...want to take one more lap around the park over there? I don’t...I mean. It sounds really stupid but I don’t really want the night to end yet...I’m having such a good time, and it’s nice...to hang out with a girl? Literally all of my roommates are boys. And their friends are boys. Everything is boys. Except for like...two girls but. And I mean, one’s my younger sister I guess…”
Not that she remembered anything about her but...that was okay. Gale remembered her so...that worked.
“Still! Walk with me, my Melody! Don’t go leaving me yet!” Holding her hands out, Mellie grinned, looking utterly pleased with herself.

"We can keep walking for a while," Melz looped her arm through Mellie's. "I have tomorrow off so there's no rush." It wasn't like she had any pets to feed or someone to go home to. However, the thought of getting a cat had crossed her mind. Wouldn't protector if there was an intruder, but it didn't need to be walked daily either. "You know, if you ever need to get away from the guys. You're welcome to give me a call and come over if I'm home." Planning a day or so ahead of time would be best but Melz was available most evenins unless she was spending time on her Wonder or away at a convention for a few days.

“Oh sweet.” Melody patted the other woman’s arm and sighed happily. “Hell yeah. That’ll be nice, and I bet they’d like the fourth wheel to get out of the house sometimes too. They’re all dating and let me tell you...sometimes I feel rather awful about it. Like, I’m intruding or something.”
She began walking into the park and sighed, wanting to say a little more and then thinking of the perfect thing. “We could take trips to our wonders sometime maybe. Have slumber parties up there...we know that yours would be great for a beach party. If we packed food and some things to make a fire? That would be pretty fantastic. And no crazy tourists or bugs. The lack of bugs is something that appeals to me…” Pausing, Mellie glanced behind them for a moment, and then to the right, her lips twisting into a slight frown.
“Do you hear that? Is there someone playing...music or something?”

The mention of being the fourth wheel kind of reminded Melody of being at work with all the new interns or recently graduated students gabbing on about their boyfriends while they were sewing costumes for the performers. It was pretty astounding how many of them were recently engaged with plans to get married after their student debt was paid off. Very rarely did they talk about this with her though. Usually these were side conversations she had heard over the sewing machine because everyone knew that Melody was single and had been for the last five years. Not that she minded. Most co-workers had formed their own cliques; Melody’s was with the other theater veterans. Mentor to the new recruits and the person who knew nearly everyone within a week of their first day of work. “I think it would be fun going on a camping trip to our Wonders.” She had already done that a few times over the last several years. There were a few times that were unintentional, stress from work took its toll and Ein had accidentally fallen asleep either on the beach or in the field of purple flowers. However, there were like two or three times where she actually brought a bag of food and a blanket with her. “Now that you mention it though, I never really noticed that there weren’t any bugs.” Birds and fish, sure. But she had always assumed that the insects went dormant when she visited, otherwise how were the lilacs always still in bloom? A cosmic anomaly. Something that only had one explanation; magic... Melz's mind had begun to wonder when Mellie asked something that gave her reason to pause. Music? Melody paused for a moment, ears straining as she tried to listen to the faint melody. “I can’t quite tell… It kind of reminds me of a lull” One from a fairytale or perhaps a dream. It sounded almost otherworldly yet at the same time it also felt vaguely familiar…” “I wonder if someone is doing a late-night performance.”

Nodding slightly, Melody wrinkled her nose. “But...why? There’s nothing special set to go on tonight...it seems like a waste...but maybe they’re practicing for something later? That would make some sense, maybe…”
She swallowed hard though, frowning. “I...It’s beautiful but...it’s making me kind of sad...like...it’s from another life or something...maybe I used to like it before I purified?” Maybe...it had the quality of a lullaby. Perhaps…
Reaching out, Melody took Melz’ hand and began to walk in the direction of the music. “We can ask them. Ask whoever’s playing. Figure out what it is and…”
And what? She wouldn’t remember anything even if she did find them. “And...see what it is...maybe?” The last words were almost a plea. She didn’t want to seem crazy...or needy but...damn. She wanted to know.

"Yeah," Melody replied after a moment's pause. "We can go see what's going on." Although she agreed, albeit reluctantly, there was a wary tone to her voice the longer she listed to the song being sung. It was almost like watching a chick flick and the background music suddenly changed before something heart-wrenchingly dramatic was about to happen. However, at the moment, neither of them had any context for the tune. The music left her feeling raw, exposed, and almost overwhelmingly sad as memories of her mother, someone she dare not talk about to anyone, came trickling back to the forefront of her mind. The last thing she wanted was for this pleasant evening to end in tears and depression and so Melz swallowed the growing lump in her throat and shunted aside her emotions until she was home alone. She smiled, as absolutely difficult as it was, Melz managed a smile nonetheless. "I think it might be coming from the water fountain area." It was more like a water park for kids where there were jets in the ground that shot streams or launched bursts of water up into the air in tandem to music playing.

Mellie nodded and drew in a breath, walking to the fountain area in silence, though when she didn’t see any musicians playing...she felt vaguely relieved and disappointed. The music sounded like it was still the same distance away...and she didn’t quite understand how that was possible but…
“Nothing’s here...I...You know? Why don’t we just...leave this as a mystery? Some...magic music on our adventure out, yeah?”
It was the best thing to do, really.
“We can just...head back out? Call it a night and plan something again soon?” Melody smiled softly and shrugged, rubbing the back of her head. No sense in doing a witchhunt for something that…the more she thought about it, the less she wanted to find it.

"Probably a wise idea. I don't really like the thought of pursuing this melody much further without powering up first." But that could also make them a target for anyone else curious about the mysterious music and right now Mel wasn't really interested in drawing the attention of someone looking to fight. "We swapped numbers earlier. So, feel free to send me a text or give me a call some time and we can meet up either after work or on the weekends." Assuming there wasn't a theater performance where she had to be present in case of costume emergencies. "Maybe set aside time to visit our wonders?" Mel added as a previously proposed suggestion. "I'd really like to see yours if you wouldn't mind taking me."

She nodded. “That sounds amazing. I’ll text you.” Most likely more often than she should but...whatever. That was neither here nor there.
“We’ll meet up soon, I….I want to visit once myself before I take anyone up, but…” She grinned. “I want you to visit. Very much so. Perhaps more than anyone else since...I’ve been to yours more than anywhere else.” Melody drew in a breath and moved to give a quick hug to the other woman before darting away.
“Talk to you soon!” Melody headed back to her house, in spite of the very real desire to keep looking for the music...and she couldn’t deny that she was at least a little relieved when the sound faded.
Ah well. Music aside. The night had been perfect.
