Quote:
Summer Storms (5) : There have been plenty of thunderstorms this summer, and everyone is blaming the weather for the strangeness of their electronics--or, bored kids out of school. It’s not uncommon to get phone calls from impossible numbers--strings of letters and numbers, and a blank caller ID. It’s hard to make out any sounds; it sounds like static, and a broken up voice in a language you can’t make out. There is no way to call the number back; it says the line is disconnected. Sometimes, text messages come through, in foreign symbols. The messages always disappear within a few seconds, and there’s no way to reply. People have even had video chats, but the image is always staticky and it’s impossible to make out any details except for a silhouette, and the same strange, foreign language. The city is hoping to have this issue fixed soon, but in the meantime they are asking for patience.

Usually he didn't receive any phone calls while he was out on patrol around the reservoir, especially when he was powered up. Somehow when he had been powering up he had forgotten that his phone was not in one of his pockets and so it was still there when he was done, and he had to quickly grab it before anyone else could and possibly identify it as his.

That would have been a disaster. But what was really weird was it had been going off every minute or so that he had received a text message. When he tried to look at it, it had weird, unrecognizable symbols on it, before disappearing as he tried to open his phone to see what it was.

Perhaps that was for the best though. After all, if he had done anything with the texts then it might mean that someone was trying to hack his phone. Or had done so already. He really hoped they hadn't, he had too much information on there that he wanted to keep private.

It was starting to agitate him a little, to the point where he had to put it on silent. Once he had done so however, he felt the aura of something chaotic. But what specifically it was he couldn't tell. It felt like it was an Agent and yet... not at the same time. He was hesitant to try and go after it, but felt compelled to as he couldn't just let any agent of Chaos run freely about hurting others.

Laven had been alone for almost an hour just thinking about random things.

Life in the Dark Kingdom was lackluster and oftentimes dull. Work was life and life was work, there was no separation between them when. Time was either spent in her designated lab within the castle walls or at home reading a book or being lazy. Wolframite was typically busy with paperwork and had little time to do something fun with her.

It was disappointing and at times made her heartache but his love and loyalty were to the Negaverse, she just simply could not compete. Laven knew he cared for her as she did him but it didn’t make her feel any less lonely when the opportunity to make new memories kept sleeping through their fingers like fine-grain sand.

Last year she had attended the festival alone and she had expected this year to be much the same.

How wrong she was…

First a Squire interrupted her hunt for those odd reflections, then Tinaksite showed up in her home with a bag of candy thinking that she had been the one to leave them in her apartment. While it would have been nice to have left it on a good note it didn’t end there. A run-in with a lieutenant at the reservoir, which was fine, and then the most startling encounter happened a few days later when she ran into Knight with glowing marks on his skin.

There seemed to be a pattern forming and Lavendulan was loath to see how long it would continue.

A third visit to the reservoir had yielded about an hour of peace and quiet, something she had dearly craved with all her being. Although she wished that she could just feel the sun upon her scales, Laven knew how dangerous it would be if anyone saw her in her true form.

Icy blue eyes studied the water's surface hoping, if not expecting, to suddenly see whatever it was that had been hiding at the bottom of the reservoir. When she had teleported the Squire here, something had grabbed hold of her and tried to pull her under; unfortunately try as it might, it would never succeed since Laven could breathe underwater. The Squire, however, was not so fortunate.

When they had finally got to the shore, the half-youma had expected that to be the end of it, for her and the knight to part ways and the two of them never look back or mention what happened. But why then did she come back not once but twice?

Morbid curiosity, perhaps?

Lavendulan honestly wasn’t sure what she wanted right now. At the moment she lacked the drive to fight and she wasn’t entirely in the mood for talking either. It was a strange mood to be in and it left her feeling kind of drained.

“Ugh,” she covered her face with both hands and let out an exasperated sigh. “I don’t like being in this stupid funk…” More than likely it was because she had spent too much of her own energy maintaining a glamour so she could attend the Festival.

Whatever the case may be, she barely reacted when a curious aura began to approach her. Laven had thought, and probably hoped, that it was the same redheaded Squire from before. But when she turned around her mouth fell agape and quickly snapped shut after noticing that her expectations were at least half met. It was in fact a Squire and they did have red hair, but their outfit was definitely different.

“Can I help you?” She finally asked when they were close enough to hear without her having to shout.

To say that Sumner was a bit freaked out was an understatement. He hadn't realized that the Negaverse could have monster and human hybrids. And he certainly didn't want to think about how they came about. It was best to just believe that the Negaverse was something he would never understand.

He sighed. "I was patrolling and felt your aura and figured I needed to have a look just in case you were up to something." He ignored the rumble in his pocket as the phone went off again. "You know that we can't let you, uh, Agents..." was she really an Agent? She was speaking to him. "go around and just take the energy from anyone and everyone." Unfortunately that his magic would be useless if there was a confrontation. Unless he learned how to play his harp with only one hand.

Lavendulan looked at the Squire with a supremely unamused expression. “Do I honestly look like I’ve been taking energy from anyone?” She motioned to the area around them which was vacant except for the two of them.

Granted, if he were smart, then he wouldn’t take that statement as a reason to relax.

Just because there wasn’t a body nearby didn’t mean she couldn’t have drained someone elsewhere or had hijacked a starseed and disposed of the body in the reservoir. Let whatever it was that has been dragging people under be the assumed cause of death instead of her. While the former was more likely, the latter was definitely not her style.

“The only thing I’m up to right now is figuring out what tried to kill me a few nights ago.” Not who but what was the keyword there. There was no aura aside from theirs but something had definitely tried to drown both her and the knight she had been with.

He raised an eyebrow and gave her a face that said "I wouldn't be surprised if you dumped a body in here". He didn't say it out loud however, what she had said next had interested him more. "What tried to kill you? You mean in the reservoir?" He was about to mention how he and his coworkers had heard the same phenomena, but it was best to keep it a secret that he worked around here.

"I've heard stories around here of people feeling like they're being grabbed and dragged under, no matter the time of day. And unless there's a lot of grabby seaweed under there, I doubt there's a non-magical explanation for all of this." If what the Agent was saying was true, then either it was a Negaverse plot that the Captain didn't know about, or it was the kind of magic that was different from Chaos or Order. The more dangerous kind in his opinion. One at least knew what to expect from the Negaverse and Dark Mirror. Random magic though? It could be anything.

"That's essentially what happened to me,"

SSDD... Same s**t different day, her story matched the rest of theirs almost to a "T'. Lavendulan had been trying to swim a different Squire back to shore after having accidentally teleporting them in to the reservoir. Something had grabbed hold of her ankle and without warning pulled her underwater.

"It's definitely magic," of that she had no doubt."Whenever I think I've caught it, whatever it it suddenly disappears; and unfortunately, it doesn't have a signature for me to follow either."

Well, she definitely doesn't appear to be behind the messages. He thought to himself. It appeared that she was just as confused as he was about all of the attempted drownings at the reservoir. He sighed. "That's unfortunate. It means that it can't be traced. And unless we have some magical way of tracing things, human inventions aren't going to do it either."

There would be no way for them to. "It's odd that there's magic out there that we don't even know about. Makes you wonder." He said, thinking for a moment before turning back to the Captain. "There don't appear to be any civilians here, so I believe you about being here to investigate this. I'm not sure we're going to get too far. All I've heard is the same stuff over and over again. You would think that there would be something left behind..."

"Trust me, I've been under water long enough tonight to have searched the entire reservoir. There's nothing obvious down there." No tracks to be followed or odd currents suggesting that it was moving around in her peripherals unseen.

Aside from the random trinkets, star charms and pieces of jewelry that people had dropped while swimming, there really wasn't much else down there other than sand and rocks.

"Since there's no telling what is down there, where does that leave us?" Based on their current conversation it seemed that whatever had attacked her was not of senshi make, or knights for that matter. Not unless someone else was using magic and he was just unaware of their involvement.

Even if she was the enemy, he was glad that she had checked. While he did have the ability to swim up waterfalls, he did not have the ability to breath underwater. Or see underwater. At a certain depth one would need a flashlight at the very least.

He took a look out at the lake. "Well... I know that there's some magic out there that isn't related to either Order or Chaos. Whether that's at play here I'm not sure, but it would both explain and leave too many questions." He looked back at her. "Thank you for looking. I appreciate it. If you're not here for any energy draining or starseed taking, I'm willing to leave you alone. There's not much else I can do here myself. Even if I'm a Neptune Squire, I can't breath underwater."

Lavendulan arched an eyebrow in his direction in response to the Squire's last statement. Neptune knight huh... I guess that explains the trident looking symbols.

"If it's not too forward of me to ask, I am curious. Since you mentioned not being able to breath underwater, what magic can you do?" The other squire could throw up an ice wall with ther use of her buckler. This one, however, didn't appear to have any weapon on him.

Sumner grinned at her. While he was pretty sure she was gathering information on her to put in whatever they had for their own database, that didn't mean he needed to tell her his main magic. He took the Harp from his back and held it. "Well, I can swim up waterfalls. Not too good in any situations down here, I know." He said, before he strummed a few strings on the harp. "And I can play some music as well. It took a bit of practice, but luckily it wasn't too hard for me to go from playing on a mini guitar to a harp."

He played a couple of chords for her. "Are you able to do something besides breathe underwater? I'm sure you can see quite well underneath the water as well. I wish I had something like that, it would make swimming in the water much easier."

Lavendulan simply held up a hand to show off her set of sharp-pointed claws. "Only what natural selection seemed to give me." She added the air quotes when she mentioned natural selection since there was nothing natural about what had happened nor what she had become.

Nonetheless, until he became hostile there was no reason for him to know what other magical quirks she had in her arsenal.

Sumner nodded. "It would be nice to have an extra defense." And it was true. All he had besides his harp was what nature had given him and against Youma... he wasn't sure if biting them would really do anything.

It was starting to get late though and he would have to get back to his home quickly. For a brief moment he wondered if she lived around here or if half-Youma needed to live... wherever Youma usually lived. He didn't know where that was.

"Well, I think we're done here then. I'll be going. But uh, if you do happen to find anything on those drownings, I would love some information on it." And with that he turned around and started to head back to his home, only powering down when he was sure that he wasn't being followed.
