Quote:
Predatory Puddles (6) : Summer rains aren’t uncommon, so finding puddles dotting your path isn’t in itself particularly surprising or abnormal. However, as you walk past them, you feel the sensation of being watched, like eyes are on you. If you look into the puddles, you don’t see your reflection--nor the reflection of anything familiar to you. Instead, you see strange, decayed buildings, and odd, rotting plants. Something is watching you through the puddles, but before you can investigate, between one blink and the next, it’s all gone. When you look back, the puddles are oddly non-reflective, and then in the next blink, they’re all gone. The feeling of being watched doesn’t fade, though.

As awful of a reminder as his uniform was, he was thankful that it kept the rain from soaking him while he was out and about. He was powered up once again. His first thought was hopefully attracting the attention of someone of the Order persuasion that he would like to get out of this whole Negaverse mess.

He didn't really have any other reason. Nothing in particular at least. He had started to neglect his energy gathering duties a bit. Nothing unusual for a Captain but it would probably be commented on.

Still, he had lost the motivation to even try to act as though he was still a part of the Negaverse, and as the clouds cleared up a bit and let the moonlight shine through he was able to wander a bit more throughout one of the parks that he liked to go to that was closest to his cabin. But something was bothering him. He was feeling goosebumps, as though he was being watched. Did it mean that Metallia was watching him or... something else? His eyes caught a puddle and for a moment it didn't appear to be reflecting anything. Something, somewhere else appeared to be in them. As though he was seeing another world!

But before he could look at it closer, he blinked and it was an ordinary puddle once again. He felt himself get annoyed. Clearly he was just seeing things, even if the feeling of being watched was still on him. He was distracted for a moment when he thought he felt... a familiar aura? But whose could it be? He started to move towards it, wondering why he felt it was familiar...

Whenever she found something strange, Cybele's habit was to power up to see if it would give her any more information.

It did not always do much good. There were no auras in these puddles on the sidewalk. There was nothing that stood out to her more once she was wearing her ribbons and antlers. There was just the visions in the water of odd, lifeless buildings and plants that she did not recognize.

If anything, it reminded her of that village she'd been whisked off to soon after her corruption, the one with the monster that she'd been helpless against, even with her Eternal wings. The architecture was slightly different in these buildings, and she did not think that it was the same town, but the feeling of unease remained, as did the eyes on her back.

Although being watched could be attributed to the Chaos aura that was drawing closer.

Cybele turned, only to freeze in place when she came face to face with the one agent who she had considered something of a friend.

"Oh," she whispered.

He had to get a bit closer before he really saw who it was and was surprised when he thought that he recognized her. He was hesitant though. For some reason he thought he couldn't really recognize her, but she seemed so familiar. Like that Senshi that had been captured.

He wouldn't assume though. "I'm not here to fight you." He said. It looked like she would be able to kick his butt anyway. How was he supposed to ask this of her. Usually he was confronted or something, but could he really just go and say, "I need some information about purification?"

Well, it was worth a shot at least. "I know this is going to sound suspicious, but I'm trying to purify out of the Negaverse. I don't know how exactly to do it, but I'm truly wanting to get out of here." Though he mostly wanted to avoid all of this entirely, but he would take what he could get in terms of this giant magical war.

A sad smile crept across Cybele's face.

"I'm not here to hurt you, either, Geo," she said, a softness in her voice that had not shown itself during her long months in the Negaverse. He was looking at her strangely, as if he did not quite know who she was, and it made her wonder if having a new identity affected her powered form at all. "It's me," she added, just in case. "Cybele."

His words confirmed a suspicion that she'd had since the second time they'd talked, back in the monster's prison. He'd never seemed to care much what the Negaverse thought about his words or actions, and since he'd been kind to her, Cybele had always sort of turned the other way.

Now, she did not have to. They could speak about it freely.

"I'd been wondering if you wanted to stay, since the last time we talked," she said, smile brightening a bit. "I should be able to tell you about it." She ran a hand across the fabric of her skirt, now white. "What is it that you want to know?"

Geo felt a blush of embarrassment run across his face for not recognizing the other in front of him. Had it been magic or was he just face blind? He really hoped it wasn't the latter, that would be a major problem in life. "Cybele..." He said slowly, almost not believing it. He knew that she was struggling with her thoughts on the Negaverse, but their last conversation made him think that she was still trying to force her thoughts into positivity about the Negaverse.

And he felt a wave of jealousy wash over him, but addressing that to her would be of no help and would probably push her away. He would have to push that feeling down. He would get to where she was, eventually. He just wished it would get here sooner rather than later.

"I'm happy for you." He truly was. "You really weren't a good fit for the Negaverse." He said with a chuckle. Not that he had any room to judge considering how badly he wanted to be out of it.

He nodded his head. "I've made my decision. The problem is not being able to trust anyone in the Negaverse with what I was planning. That meant even you, sorry." If he felt that the Negaverse truly could form a friendly bond and not backstab each other maybe it would have been different. But if Metallia told you you needed to stab your friend directly in the spine, they would have to do it whether they wanted to or not.

He sighed. "I guess my main question is how? What did you do or who did you meet to be able to do it? I... don't think I've gotten quite there, but I'm starting to feel like I'll never get there as well, you know?"

Geocronite may have been apologizing for not telling her things sooner, but as Cybele listened, there was nothing but understanding in her eyes.

"It was probably for the best that you did not tell me in so many words. I still may have felt the need to turn you in at that point," she said. Her voice was steady, but she shook her head and clenched her jaw at the insidious nature of the Negaverse.

"Things were," she paused, exhaling a sharp breath through her nose, "Complicated. Then afterwards, so much happened all at once."

She'd gone into the last mission intending to prove herself to the Negaverse, not to end up prematurely labeled as a traitor and forced to flee, but that was how things had happened. At this point, she couldn't even be upset about it. She was thankful that she'd gotten out when she had.

She'd do whatever she could to make sure that Geocronite could leave, too. "It takes a Royal and their crystal to burn the Chaos out of your starseed," she said. "It's intense. I won't lie to you. It also may have an effect on your memories, but," her smile was warm. "After that, you're free."

At least she had forgiven him. It felt like a bit of the weight that had been on his shoulders had now been lifted. There was just the rest of it to get rid of, namely by purifying. He gave her a small smile. "It seemed like you were still trying to fit in. So maybe you might have gone and told someone if I had told you. Or maybe that's just my general distrust of any Agent within the Negaverse." It was hard to tell. They said that they made friends there, but it's not as though you could go against Metallia's direct order if she gave it.

"A Royal... I think I remember Agents talking about one making an appearance recently. Though I'm not sure how to get in contact with them. You might have a better idea." He said with a chuckle.

It was hard to hear that his memories would be effected. "As much as I hate to lose any memories, I hope they're my civilian ones. I'm practically a hermit so losing those wouldn't mean as much. But my powered memories..." Emotions quickly rushed through him but he couldn't identify them at the moment. "I want to remember my powered ones. I want to remember Agents. At least so I'll know who they are when I confront them."

He sighed. `"Does it take some sort of epiphany or proving your worth or something? I feel like I've been ready for a long time. Though I guess since I haven't met any Royals that that would hamper it."

"No," said Cybele, no emotion in her voice even as her head canted slightly. "You were right to distrust me. I might have had to kill you."

The task might have fallen on somebody else. The Negaverse knew enough of her past and her situation that they had never tried sending her after traitors, but she'd been combat oriented in her time there. She'd been the Negaverse's hands and feet. She could imagine what kind of orders she'd have been given had she come up to report someone about to leave.

She also knew she likely would have followed them, even though the the thought sent a lump to her throat as she looked over Geocronite now.

"I was desperate to prove myself to the Negaverse, right up to the point where I wasn't," she said quietly.

All that effort had been misplaced, and Geo had seen it from the start. Now, she'd do what she could to get him out.

The phone was in her hand in an instant. "Ganymede is the one who was at the last fight, and the one who helped me, after. I could get her here in a few minutes, if you wanted." She scrolled through her contacts until she found another name. "There's someone called Camelot in here, too. I don't remember him, but he's a Royal Knight, if you'd be more comfortable with that, since you'd be a Knight afterwards."

The tension that she always carried when talking about the Negaverse broke. She smiled at him. "No proving your worth. I think you have to want it, to some extent. It can't be forced on your starseed, the way that Chaos can."

Her fingers fluttered to her chest, a shadow of a memory coming through.

"I can't see it not working for you."

"That wouldn't be a surprise. Why anyone in the Negaverse thinks that loyalty will be forever rewarded, instead of forever scrutinized, is beyond me." Which is why he had never shown any in the first place. He had done what he had to, and had been considered good enough for a promotion, but had never done any of it willingly or thought that any praise would be expected.

"I don't blame you. If you lose your memories and are brought into a place where you feel like you don't belong but have to stay, I bet I would be willing to prove myself as well. It would be too scary to think about otherwise." It was true. He didn't blame her for it at all at least. And he was glad that perhaps some of the talks that he had given her had gotten through.

He was surprised when she whipped out her phone and was instantly ready to call whomever he may have wanted for a purification. He felt a bit embarrassed that it could be so easily done, and yet here he had been, feeling like it was impossible. He gave her a small smile. "I appreciate it. But I still have work to do with possibly losing my memories and selling my cabin. As much as I would like to keep it, I don't think I could stay in it." He said, feeling sad at losing it. Maybe he would get another cabin, but this one had been his, and he would miss it. "When I'm ready though, I can try to contact you maybe?"

"I suppose I was in denial about some of it for a long time? I didn't question why I should serve this organization even after they'd taken me out of my old life. Chaos is like that, I suppose, and I got an Eternal's dose of it all at once," she said. Her lips pressed even thinner, and she exhaled sharply.

"You and some others started breaking through all that, which is good. Things are better, now."

He didn't need to know just how dark things had gotten, for a time.

She let the phone vanish again and squinted thoughtfully at a nearby building, instead. "We talked about going to that cabin once, didn't we? If we ended up going out there, I don't remember it, but-" she squinted harder, even the details of that conversation somehow feeling very blurry, "If I gave you my contact information then, you could use that number to get in touch with me. I got a new phone afterwards, but I still have that one around. I'll keep it charged."

Her expression softened, and she smiled at him. "But yes, you should sell the cabin. Save the money to get a new one, once you're free."

He smiled softly. "We did, though I don't think we're going to meet there anymore. It will have to be at a new cabin like you say." He said, still sad about having to leave it. "I'll see if I can find the contact information. I should be able to. And I would appreciate any help that you can give." He was starting to feel more confident in the amount of connections he had made with the Order. He had... at least acquaintances on the other side that he believe he could count on more than anyone in the Negaverse.

They may have been talking for too long. He hated it, but he felt like he couldn't talk to any Order for too long lest some other Agent get around to finding them. "I'm glad we had this talk. And I'm happy you were able to purify Cybele. No one deserves to be forced into the Negaverse like we were." It was disgusting to him. "Unfortunately, I should probably get going, but I'll contact you when I'm feeling safe enough to do so! Just... have to go and find somewhere to live and sell my cabin." He said with a sigh. Maybe he could custom build the next one?

“Of course. It won’t be pretty if we end up caught like this,” she said, and stepped away from him. She didn’t fully want to. It would have been easier, she thought, if he would have let her call someone to come and free him right that night, but she knew it wasn’t so simple.

She hadn’t had much of a civilian life to leave behind when she’d purified. He did. There would be no ripping him away from those things without his consent.
He could have time to take care of those things, if he wanted it.

“I’ll feel better when I see you in knight’s clothes,” she said, her voice softer than usual. “I know the Negaverse hasn’t been good to you, so just-“ she took another step back and offered a smile, bittersweet as it was. “Keep in touch, all right? Even if you just have more questions.”

He nodded. "I appreciate it Cybele. More than you know." He said. Though he gave her a genuine smile when she talked about his Knight clothes. "Hopefully it will be the next time we meet. I'm excited to learn what type I may be." He said, and with that he gave a way and teleported away, making sure that they would be far enough away from each other so that they wouldn't be caught together.
