Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His tables were somehow both simple and overwhelming; each table was draped with a dark purple tablecloth, all with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the tables were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled to allow his visitor to pass, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Paracelsian had a feeling from the start that these wisps weren't goodies to be collected. Things that behaved like this had to go somewhere. He'd kept track of where that impact from a few nights ago had come from, and this seemed to be the place. Sure enough, there was that weird "wanted" sign in front of the supposed landing zone with an illustration that matched the wisp he found, and when he stepped past it, there was a slightly familiar face.

He squinted at the merchant at his table, but tried not to sound too accusatory in his greeting. "Hello again," he said. The merchant was every bit as odd and yet oddly compelling as before, and he put two and two together to determine his purpose. "I take it you're looking for something like this, and you'll exchange it for just about anything you have there?" he asked, pulling the Wisp out of subspace and clutching it maybe just a bit tighter than was necessary.

Meanwhile, a short distance away, Nambulite was dropping by to investigate the Captain-rank aura that he could feel but not see. The sign by the space caught his attention, as it requested the wisp that he had gotten thoroughly soaked when capturing. He took a few steps forward, and suddenly several things came into view: a stylish man, a table full of knickknacks, and his Captain. "Hey, Boss!" he called out to Paracelsian, hailing him before coming right up behind him. His attention then shifted to the merchant and his wares. "Well, well, well, who might you be? You've definitely got good taste, whoever you are."

Nambulite's magpie eyes were already scanning the treasures on the table, and the sight of so many rare things on a table at once were making his heart go pit-a-pat. It was a shame that there would be too many things to carry, or he'd take all of them.

“Ah!” the merchant greeted. “Yes, hello again. Yes, you know how these things go.” His eyes were on the wisp eagerly and he clearly wanted to make this trade--quickly. Conversation was fine, but the satisfaction of being one step closer was too tantalizing.

He didn’t even seem surprised or offended by the second agent that arrived.

“I’m just a humble merchant, looking to recover what I’ve lost, and unload a few of my treasures. But yes, I have very good taste, thank you. Come, come. Bring me your wisps, let me get them where they belong and then I’ll be more than happy to see if I can pair you with something wonderful in exchange.”

He reached from beneath the table and withdrew an extremely ornate chalice that could have easily doubled as an extravagant candy dish, complete with stem and lid. The crystal bowl was cut with many facets that all perfectly seemed to capture and accentuate the light inside. Atop of the clear crystal, an ornate silver lid encrusted with what looked to be a giant diamond in the center. It had a large silver stem and a beautiful, sturdy base with a few more gemstones embedded within it. A few wisps danced around inside already, and he looked up at the agents expectantly.

Paracelsian was surprised that the merchant remembered him at all, or that he at the very least took the cue that he was recognized. Nambulite's interruption threw aside his curiosity about whether the merchant really remembered him, as he now had his rash and occasionally ridiculous Lieutenant to attend to. "Nambulite. You're not still trying to use youma as thrown weapons, are you?" After the rather cold greeting, he brought his focus back to the merchant. "It seems this thing belongs to you, so in it goes, I suppose." With that, he dropped the wisp into the fancy bowl. He wasn't quite sure how it would stay there if the merchant didn't put the lid on quickly.

"Of course not!" Nambulite retorted. "That ratdog youma was an exception. He ended up pretty helpful during that whole operation, so I'm glad I didn't throw him." He stared at the wisp bowl, and he hoped that his eyes were twinkling as much as the crystal and gems, because he wanted them to be. "Hoo-ee, this looks expensive! How much did you have to pay or trade for it? On second thought, nah, I dunno if these wispy things have a currency exchange rate." He took his wisp out of subspace and pursed his lips, pausing before the finally releasing it. "I went through a lot of trouble to get this thing. I had to jump into a lake, for crying out loud. This had better go to a good cause!"

“A very good cause,” the merchant assured, and quickly capped the chalice. He returned it to its safe spot beneath the table, and promptly returned his attention to the two agents in front of him. “And I’ll see to it that you’re rewarded as such. Come, take a look at what I have on display. I’ve certainly got plenty of treasures.”

He had a few pieces that seemed to stand out among the jewelry and trinkets and little artifacts.

The first--a gilded cup, painstakingly crafted to resemble an oasis around the edges. When raised to the lips to sip, everything that appeared in the users line of vision seemed to morph into a beautiful mirage.

The second, a golden feather. It was as light and wispy as anyone should expect of natural plumage, though it seemed as though it was made of pure metal. It was full, and looked as though it could have been plucked from a beautiful, exotic bird.
