Quote:
Wanted Wisps (11) : Small, wispy orbs are floating through the city. They can be found during the day but are far more visible at night. They seem to bob along a few feet off the ground and sometimes flicker in and out of sight. They are warm to the touch and seem to be somewhat magical in nature. Anyone can gather them in their hands; they do not quite feel solid but cannot slip through fingers or escape any container. If you find one of these, you must return it to the merchant. If you do not roleplay with him, it will be assumed that you returned the piece to him anyway; there is no way to keep these. Please see this post for information on turning in the Wisp and claiming your prize.

Going out patrolling with Whisler was pretty normal for Newgrange.

Going out patrolling with Whisler’s new protege was a unique experience, partially because there was a little bit of tenseness in the air that he couldn’t quite figure out.

Starlight didn’t have the same amount of free time as they did, nor the freedom to come and go as he pleased. He was shy about being a new Knight, and still seemed like he was struggling to understand it, so when Newgrange got the invitation to power up with the two of them and patrol town just to normalize it, of course he’d agreed.

He and Nick had talked about wanting to get to know Caius anyway, and the young man seemed so sheepish and hardworking whenever he visited the bakery.

Newgrange supposed it was because he wasn’t used to being around so many people and was worried he was in the way, so he was a bit excited to get some quiet time to talk.

Starlight had said he’d only been available tonight but had been shady about the details, and Newgrange suspected that ‘everyone went out so I’m free for a while’ wasn’t quite accurate. When Whisler and Newgrange had met up with him, he had already powered up and seemed a little jumpy, and he’d been quick to fall in line with the two of them. Newgrange had deduced that he’d wanted company but wasn’t necessarily eager to talk about why, so he and Whisler had filled the silence with stories about their Wonders, and Starlight had listened with great interest, even occasionally asking questions.

It had been a quiet night for the most part, but Newgrange slowed when he realized that Starlight had stopped walking.

He paused, glanced at Whisler, and then back to Starlight. “Is everything okay?”

Starlight didn’t answer immediately and just tilted his head as he looked at something off in the distance. “It’s just a glowing light? I thought it was a lightning bug but it’s not. I--will you come look? I can’t tell,” he said, and glanced at the two Knights for a second before he nodded back towards the strange, floating orb that seemed to be casually drifting across the street.

Whisler was so glad that he was getting the chance to patrol with his two favorite people. Not only did he have Newgrange by his side but Starlight was here too...and God if they didn’t feel like a real family. It was wonderful, and Whisler couldn’t stop the smile that had been on his face since he got the news that their hopefully soon to be son was able to come and patrol with them.

It was almost like a dream.

When Newgrange spoke, he glanced over to Starlight as well, and then his eyes slid to whatever it was the boy was looking at. “Yeah. We’re coming kid. Are you sure it’s not a lightning bug?”

It was the right time of year for them at least. And it wouldn’t surprise him but--no. Whatever the thing was...Starlight was right.

“...Yeah no...lightning bugs blink...like you obviously know. Ignore me Starlight. I’m just thinking out loud. You know how I can get…” He hesitated and grinned at the blonde page. “Think it’s a ghost? Or a piece of a ghost or something? That would be pretty neat, don’t you think?”

And mildly horrifying...normally the city saved the creepy stuff for Halloween.

Starlight’s nose scrunched up. “No, that doesn’t sound neat! That sounds horrible. I don’t want ghosts to be floating around in the city! I have enough to worry about without worrying about the dead too. That’s just creepy.”

Newgrange had to raise a hand to cover his mouth, trying very hard to stifle a laugh. He was usually cautious, usually very worried and very proactive about making good decisions, but he felt easy around the two of them. “Well, let’s go investigate then. It doesn’t look like it’s hurting anything.”

“Not yet,” Starlight muttered, but he sounded fairly doubtful. He didn’t move for a long moment, and when he did it was only to shift positions. “...What if it is a ghost or something, couldn’t it possess us?”

“It’s not a ghost,” Newgrange assured, shooting Whisler a look. “And even if it were, you’re equipped enough to fight it. Nothing’s going to possess you.”

“Oh,” Starlight said, but still seemed doubtful.

“Come on,” Newgrange assured. “...It doesn’t look quite right, but maybe it’s just a lost starseed or something. I’ve never seen one glow quite like that, but...Maybe it’s just trying to get home.”

It didn’t look like anything bad, so what was the harm?

“Do they do that often?” Starlight asked, slowly following Newgrange’s lead; when the Earth Knight began to slowly trail after the wisp, he moved after him. “Starseeds, I mean. They don’t just come out on their own, right?”

He was doing his best to learn--and had been asking questions. He still felt overwhelmed, but at least he was trying.

Whisler grinned at his fiance’s look and gave a soft laugh. “Yeah, it’s too early in the year for ghosts! I know I know. And, Starlight. I wouldn’t let anything possess you anyway. I’d jump in the way and Arias would have to save me, as per usual. He’s such a knight in green armor after all.” He fluttered his eyelashes at the male and chuckled, though paused at the idea of starseeds just...noping out of people’s chest.

“Ah, no...they shouldn’t just come out at all. They…” He shuddered at the very thought of it. “They can be taken out. I mean...normally. When you transcend, like me...the uh. Glowing snowflakes I have? It makes it so chaos can’t reach in and take your starseed and that…”

He was quiet for a moment, frowning slightly and giving a heavy sigh as he thought of Ashanite and past mistakes. “That’s a comfort, I’ll admit.”

Reaching out, Whisler cupped his hands together and clapped them around one of the wisps. “Oh...it’s soft...not a Starseed.”

Newgrange glanced over, and while it seemed like he wanted to take Whisler’s hand, he refrained--if only so he could scoop up the wisp.

Starlight peeked his head around Whisler. “Ew, you’re touching it,” he said softly--and then let out a startled noise when another wisp manifested just to his left.

Instinctively, Newgrange reached to grab this one--only, he seemed equally surprised at how soft and warm it was. “...It feels like how I imagine a butterfly would,” he said after a second. He frowned and looked to Whisler inquisitively. “...I have no idea what these are. I don’t think normal things just float around like this, though. If it’s dangerous…”

He didn’t finish the thought; it was hard to imagine that this thing could be hostile, but in Destiny City--was it really a bad idea to be careful?

“If it’s dangerous, just let it go,” Starlight said worriedly. “I don’t want something to happen to either of you.”

For half a moment, Nick wanted to simply be a butt and scare Starlight...but then Newgrange took hold of his own...glowing light ball so...it wasn’t...possible any longer...but...god it would have been funny to watch the boy freak out...at least a little. “I don’t think it’s dangerous. It doesn’t feel dangerous...and it doesn’t look too dangerous either. Of course...I’ve been wrong before.”

He moved over to the page and held out has hands. “Here, hold it, it’s safe. I wouldn’t let anything hurt my Starlight, just so you know.”

There was a soft, tender smile on his face as he held it out, and for a moment, he clearly forgot that they hadn’t yet adopted the boy. Oh well. This was totally normal behavior regardless. “Nothing will happen to any of us, I promise.”

Starlight didn’t look up at him; he seemed completely preoccupied with the strange little floating ball of light. “Don’t tease me, I didn’t get to pick this name,” he muttered, completely missing the point of Whisler’s tenderness.

He seemed uncertain and held out his hand to accept the orb, already flinching like he expected it to zap him. “...Do you always just try to grab weird things as they come floating at you? I mean, I understand fireflies, but.”

No, he didn’t; the idea of bugs--even neat ones, with glowing butts--grossed him out. And, he was afraid he might accidentally crush them.

“...What are we going to do with it, do we just let it go, or…?”

He finally chanced a quick glance up at Whisler and Newgrange.

Newgrange, though quiet, seemed to be trying to investigate the little orb, carefully lifting it, gently prodding it. Even now he couldn’t seem to see anything hostile about it, but it still felt wrong to just leave it out…

Whistler hesitated. “I’m not sure we should let them go just yet...maybe we can keep walking and find a good place for whatever they are? I mean,” He gave the boy a small, almost hesitant smile. “If you want to spend some more time with us tonight? They don’t seem dangerous, but...I don’t know if I’m comfortable just leaving them to float around.”

They almost looked like orbs of energy. But he didn’t think they just...floated freely like this. Still.

He shot a glance at Arias. “I’m game to walk a little more if you are, love. See if we can’t find a home for these little...glowbugs? Also, I don’t just...I mean.”

The Knight huffed. “I don’t just grab weird things...Not all the time, at least. But this didn’t seem dangerous.” Not that he had the best head for what was dangerous or not. Still.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time!”

Newgrange barely held back a laugh and shook his head; he’d gotten used to Whisler’s enthusiasm, and the way he seemed to try and relax Starlight while they were out patrolling. Newgrange didn’t mind spending a little extra time out walking if it meant he got to spend time with them, but he didn’t have to worry about trying to explain why he was out so late.

Starlight’s lips pursed together firmly as he considered this, and looked at the wisps, and then finally nodded.

“I suppose,” Starlight finally said. “It’s not that I don’t like spending time with you two,” he insisted, “It’s just that I have to sneak in. But,” he looked down at the wisps.

“...It’s for a good cause. So, yeah. Let’s go see if we can figure out where they go.”
