Quote:
Wanted Wisps (11) : Small, wispy orbs are floating through the city. They can be found during the day but are far more visible at night. They seem to bob along a few feet off the ground and sometimes flicker in and out of sight. They are warm to the touch and seem to be somewhat magical in nature. Anyone can gather them in their hands; they do not quite feel solid but cannot slip through fingers or escape any container. If you find one of these, you must return it to the merchant. If you do not roleplay with him, it will be assumed that you returned the piece to hi anyway; there is no way to keep these. Please see this post for information on turning in the Wisp and claiming your prize.

Ryan hummed to himself as he wandered around the festival, partaking in all the delicious food the festival had to offer. He’d been slowly working his way down every booth, trying every deep fried, slathered in butter, fattening item he could. Every funnel cake, every salted soft pretzel, just… everything he could think of or afford when he ran across it. The festival was one of the biggest highlights of summers here in Destiny City, something he’d learned last year when he’d attended his first one. It was really fun and exciting and there was always something new to look at. His humming increased as he checked out all the booths with neat little handmade items. He cooed over all the cute clothes and little knick-knacks that looked interesting, all of them made with love.

He wound up picking up a long, swishy, blue poodle skirt. Huh. He hadn’t known these were making some kind of fashion comeback. How freaking awesome was that? He bought it and slipped it on over his shorts, twirling to make it swish with a giggle. He thanked the person running the booth and continued on down the streets, until he needed a respite and made his way to a more secluded area.

It was there that he spotted the wisp floating nearby and internally groaned. Oh, great. The thing that the merchant wanted this year. He wasn’t very into the idea of dealing with him again; one year was enough, he was pretty sure. He doubted there would be anything there for him anyway.

Looking around, he spotted someone else moseying around, appearing to look for something. Hey, I wonder if she’s after a wisp, or just dropped her phone. He sauntered over.

“Hey, need help finding something?” he asked in a cheery tone, waving his phone. “I have a pretty strong flashlight on this thing.”

The festival was literally all of Alexa's favorite things smashed together into one awesome thing. There was food, and most of that food was of the snacks and sweets variety. On top of that, there were games, and vendors, and so many dumb things to spend money on.

By the time she found the wisp, Alexa had already bought a full bag full of candy, and a star bracelet, and a star headband, and a little bee shaped pillow that someone had been selling for some reason. Her bag was full, her checking account was empty, and Alexa was overall having a great time, and then something magical showed up.

The magic was what really put the festival over the top.

It had been the same, last year. There had been fairies and everything, but she'd ran out of time to get close to them, or to catch them or anything. Her running theory was that it was something about the festival themself that drew them closer, and that meant that Alexa's eyes had been peeled from the beginning.

When she saw the small glowing thing, she immediately sprinted after it. It had to be a fairy, or something like that. Unless it was Order magic, but she didn't have the time right now to power up and check for auras. She just had to get close.

It vanished around a corner outside of the main festival area, and that was when she heard a voice calling out to her. She turned to see someone in a poodle skirt, and she nodded enthusiastically.

"Well, I think I already found it," she said. "It's glowing, see? But I wanna get closer."

Ryan grinned. "Those Will-O-Wisp looking things, yeah? You know the lore about them is all spooky, right? Like, they lead you to your doom and stuff like that," he said, walking towards the glowing thing anyway.

It really freaked him out, considering how proud he was of his Irish heritage and how much time he spent reading up on folklore and customs and culture. He knew many stories about these things—at least, when they appeared around Ireland or Scotland or Wales or what have you. He was certain that—had these things been some kind of normal wisp, that his caution would be justified—but when he considered the fact that the merchant was after these things this year, they couldn't have actually been harmful or lead people to their doom.

The merchant was, first and foremost, a business man, and a business man didn't generate more business from sending potential clients off on a wild goose chase of death.

"Though I haven't heard of anyone going and dying or anything. Doubtful anyway, since they seem to like being caught..." He tilted his head between her and the wisp. "Have you got a container for it that'll work? I'm not really into catching one of these things. The fella that wants them has nothing I want anyway, I can feel it."

"Your doom?"

Alexa watched as the boy in the big skirt followed after the little wisp anyway, and she was on his heels without any hesitation at all, just an excited grin. "I mean, a fairy led me into a hedge last year 'cause I was trying to catch it." she said, her eyes still locked on the little bobbing light. She didn't look the least bit discouraged.

It was so pretty, and definitely magical. If it was a Will o' Wisp, she was pretty sure that it did count as a fairy, which would add a lot of evidence to her whole theory about the tie between old legends and the stuff that tended to show up at certain times of year, when the barriers between the worlds were thin.

It was a thing.

"They're not always bad though, are they? Like, Brave. 'If ya had a chance to change yer fate, would ya?' she quoted, squinting at the wisp. Her Scottish accent wasn't great, but she tried.

Like magic, another wisp came into view down the street. "See? It is like that. They're making a chain!"

She sprinted off, cutting a little bit ahead of the boy.

Ryan chuckled at her bad accent and nodded. "True, but you can never be too careful," he replied.

As she ran ahead, he looked back to the bright lights of the festival and hoped that going into the forest at night wouldn't spell total disaster. He was right on the girl's heels as he followed.

"Name's Ryan, by the way," he said.

"Alexa," she called out behind her as she ran.

The trees closed around Alexa, but she did not find herself falling off any seaside cliffs or descending into any fairy worlds.

"See? Not dead," she said, flashing a grin backwards towards Ryan. The wisp wasn't too fast, and unlike the ones in Brave, it did not vanish when she drew too close to it. It just bobbed a little.

Alexa lunged forwards, clasping her hands around the little glowy thing like it was a firefly.

It worked. Soft light was visible through her fingertips, and Alexa brought her hands closer to her face, peeking through to stare at the wisp in awe.

"Woah."

Ryan grinned.

"Good catch. And since you actually caught it and are not, in fact, dead, I think it's safe to say that these things are safe," he said with a small laugh. "Do you have a container for it, though, or are you gonna take it over there out in the open? Because the second doesn't seem like the smartest idea, honestly..."

"I'll figure something out," said Alexa, all cheerful. "I don't think this little thing's gonna escape my clutches."

She tried to wiggle her fingers for emphasis, at which point the wisp did, in fact, escape her hands. Alexa frowned. "Or something," she said, but she quickly caught it again, and then was on her way.

"It was good to meet you," she called, even as she tried to slip out of the boy's sight as quickly as possible.

She wanted to look over this thing with Sylvite's eyes.
