Wanted Wisps (11) : Small, wispy orbs are floating through the city. They can be found during the day but are far more visible at night. They seem to bob along a few feet off the ground and sometimes flicker in and out of sight. They are warm to the touch and seem to be somewhat magical in nature. Anyone can gather them in their hands; they do not quite feel solid but cannot slip through fingers or escape any container. If you find one of these, you must return it to the merchant. If you do not roleplay with him, it will be assumed that you returned the piece to hi anyway; there is no way to keep these. Please see this post for information on turning in the Wisp and claiming your prize.

Sessrumnir had no idea what it was. It was small. It floated above the ground. It glowed. It didn’t seem nefarious in nature. It also didn’t seem like there was anything uniquely magical about it, other than the fact that it was clearly not a creature that belonged in the normal world. He would expect it would likely be useful to some kid who carried around a Mastersword, but he was definitely not that kid.

And yet he sat in the grass and watched as he flitted about. It didn’t really seem to do anything. It just existed. Maybe that was its purpose? To just look pretty? But then again, who decided what was valuable and what wasn’t? Maybe someone needed this little glowy orb thing to flit about and exist and look pretty.

Or he was just full of s**t, trying to feed his long dead optimism.

He sighed and leaned back to lay in the grass, staring up at the starless sky through the park trees. Being so close to the city meant that stars were pretty much impossible to see.

Except for a single dot.

But it wasn’t a star at all, was it? Unlike the blue star charm he'd picked up earlier that day. No. And he knew it wasn’t. He didn’t need anyone or anything to confirm what that dot was.

He drew in a long breath and let it out slowly, his eyes locked on the speck in the sky that was Jupiter.

“How come my memories of you are only when you’re younger than I am now? Was life as a scholar really so dangerous that you didn’t make it to your thirties? Or have I not been around enough to get those memories?” Sessrumnir said out loud to himself. Really, he knew barely anything about the Sessrumnir before him. His name was Percy. He looked like he spent more time reading books than training to be a Knight. He did research on plants, had hot springs with latent healing properties, and… that was about it.

Really, Sessrumnir wasn’t sure why he was thinking about whoever his past life must have been. Why did he care? It was in the past, and Sessrumnir the Wonder had been destroyed when Chaos took over and all the Worlds and Wonders died.

The little orb was still hovering around, even though Sessrumnir was ignoring it. He thought it might have floated off by now, but it didn’t seem to mind keeping him company.

And on the topic of company…

Sessrumnir reached down to his belt and swiped his thumb over the fang that rested there. The ethereal form of a large wolf appeared and she stood over him, head tilted curiously from one side, and then to the other.

“Huh,” he mused to himself, and laughed softly. “I always thought you were a wolf. But you’re not… quite…”

He pushed himself up to sit, his hands reaching up to offer her a pet, and then laughed when she flopped down into the grass next to him and on his lap and almost toppled him over with her gigantic size.

“I’m sorry I only call on you when I need help,” he said, scratching behind her ears and her belly when she rolled excitedly onto her back, clearly starved for affection. It made him feel bad, even if she was just a magical dog. “We’ll go to Sessrumnir sometime, and you can run around all you want, okay?” he promised. “Just you and me.”

He turned then to see the little wispy orb still hovering around, but it seemed a bit more excited than before. Cautiously he reached over and scooped it up. He thought he saw a note about someone looking to collect them, so… maybe he would return it after all.
