Quote: It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face. He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones. His tables were somehow both simple and overwhelming; each table was draped with a dark purple tablecloth, all with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the tables were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them. He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled to allow his visitor to pass, he smiled. He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.” ‘WANTED. Will reward handsomely,’ said the sign out front.
Roselite paused, glanced nervously at Bloodstone, then stepped through the barrier, which rippled and allowed them to enter.
He did not know what he was expecting from this place, but it wasn’t this. Tables draped in dark purple cloth. Sumptuous embroidery. Items scattered over each surface, carrying the low hum of magic. Most astonishing of all, at least to Roselite, was the man in the chair.
There were aliens in the city. Roselite knew this because the Negaverse told him so. The Senshi and Knights were attempting to invade the Earth, and it was their duty to protect the Earth from that invasion. But the Senshi and Knights looked human. This man had human-like qualities, yet there were other aspects of his appearance that were anything but.
Roselite looked from the man’s colorful hair to his sharp features to the horns protruding from his temples.
“Um…”
The stranger looked sophisticated and relaxed, like their presence here did not concern him at all. Apprehensive, Roselite’s throat closed up before he could return the man’s greeting, and he looked toward his Captain for reassurance.

Bloodstone entered through the barrier on Roselite’s heel. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting from the strange magical dome, but his expression didn’t change as he looked around at all the gaudy, over the top decorations. It looked like they were trying to merge a Renaissance Festival and an antique shop. Except instead of a little old lady that smelled like cats sitting behind the table, it was a man who might have taken the wrong turn trying to get to a convention in Destiny City.
Maybe he should suggest to Celeste getting a job at an antique shop. She would fit right in.
“You were looking for these?” Bloodstone asked as he continued to look around, making sure he was aware of anything that might be considered a threat. Well, anything other than the man behind the table.
He gestured to Roselite to make his way up to show the man what they found, while Bloodstone tried to hone in on any White Moon aura that could be lurking or hidden by a Guardian Cat’s magic.

The merchant brightened immediately at the mention of ‘ looking for these’ and his eyes went to Roselite expectantly. “Have you found some wisps?” he asked eagerly, and leaned forward to wait for their retrieval. “I must say, I was beginning to worry that I wasn’t going to find the rest of them. I’d have gone out looking, myself, but I haven’t got anyone to keep an eye on things and, well.” He gestured to his tables, “I’d really rather not risk losing any more treasures unless absolutely necessary. Someone has to stay here to make these trades. I take it that’s why you boys are here?” His smile was sharp and keen, and he seemed to be looking them both over and summing them up as quickly as possible. “Don’t be shy, come introduce yourselves. Let me get to know you, I’ll find you something lovely in exchange.”

“Um, we…” Roselite began nervously. “We found one.”
He sounded guilty about it, like he thought they should have found more. Knowing now that there were more out there, Roselite did wonder if they should have tried harder to find this little wisp’s friends. Maybe that’s what it was doing when they saw it bobbing around.
Cautiously, Roselite approached the strange, well-dressed man, allowing him to see the wisp in his hands. It was warm and comforting to the touch. Roselite almost regretted having to relinquish it to someone.
“I… um… I’m Lieutenant Roselite,” he said, “And this is Captain—” Roselite’s throat began to close up again, like he’d realized a mistake too late and was trying to recover, but he still managed to utter the word, “Bloodstone,” before his ability to speak gave out.
Wincing, he glanced at his Captain. Something told him Bloodstone wouldn’t have wanted to reveal who they were to someone whose origins they did not know.

No, Bloodstone wouldn't have wanted to reveal who they were to someone they didn't know. This man was clearly odd, and had his priorities of trading these items rather than searching for these wisps himself. If they were that important, he would have been working harder to find them, rather than hoping people would show up and trade for them.
At least that was what he assumed would happen, given the number of… trinkets layed out.
"And you are?" he asked, already looking at some of the arguably useless junk on the tables. "You're not with the White Moon, otherwise you wouldn't still be here. Have you considered joining the Negaverse? We have plenty of things to trade. Probably much more valuable than any of these…" he said as he paused to sneer at what looked like a tiny french horn and a bell with no clapper to make it ring.
"Do people actually trade for any of this stuff?" he grunted, picking up a weird looking hat with a feather and tossing it back onto the table when there were no identifying labels.

“Oh, you have nice manners,” the merchant all but cooed, and he smiled at Roselite in such a way that almost made him look like a hungry predator. Bloodstone, not so much; he seemed like he was already moving on to business. Not that Almadel could complain about getting to the point. But, he did like to have a little fun now and then. “It’s nice to meet you, Lieutenant Roselite, and Captain Bloodstone.” Roselite more so, because he wasn’t throwing around his precious treasures. “You can call me Almadel. I work alone, the ‘White Moon’ is a bit too boring for me, I’m afraid. And I’m not sure the Negaverse would give me the hours I want, sorry. I’ll have you know that plenty of people trade for my things. What do you want instead, a starseed?” he asked, just a bit dryly. He smiled to Roselite again, though; this time he seemed warmer and a bit more pleasant. “Do you see anything you like? I’ll make sure you get a good deal, just as long as my wisp gets back to me in one piece.”

First, Roselite smiled. Praise was always welcome, even for something as simple as his manners — which everyone should have, in his opinion. Then his expression froze, because this strange shopkeeper looked predatory all of a sudden, and Roselite was fairly certain that wasn’t a good thing, as that meant he was the prey.
Roselite took a nervous step back, the wisp still clutched in the gentle cradle of his hands.
The second smile seemed more welcoming. Roselite thawed slightly and managed another twitch of the lips in return.
“Um…” he said again, as was his way. “I’m sorry for—” Captain Bloodstone, he would have said, if he wasn’t worried that Captain Bloodstone might be angry about it. Apologizing for his superior officer while his superior officer was right there seemed wrong, or at least not proper protocol.
“I… um…” Roselite looked between Almadel and Bloodstone, then to the wisp in his hands, then to the tables lined with treasures. They called to him, even if Bloodstone deemed them useless. “Um… where do all your things come from?”
Beneath that question lied another, unasked at the moment, Where do you come from?

“The sign said you would reward handsomely, Almadel. Is this all the stuff you’re willing to trade with?” Bloodstone asked as he picked up what looked like a teacup but it didn’t have a handle. Was it broken? Probably. It looked like there was just a bunch of useless junk from all over the cosmos there.
“Someone in Information isn’t doing their job. I don’t think I saw anything about you in our database,” he frowned, and then turned to frown at Roselite as well for starting to apologize for him. No one had to apologize for him. If he was going to offend someone, then they had the ability to tell him. It wasn’t his fault if they were too cowardly to say it to his face.
“Starseeds are easy to come by, so no,” he continued to frown, although his eyebrows raised slightly at the offer. “Do you have starseeds? I’m surprised no one else has swiped them up. They can be very valuable. Like a drug. Addictive if misused. Take that information and use it however you want.” He was just going to leave out how they also tended to turn the addicted into youma after a while, apparently.

Almadel flashed a charming grin. “Is this not handsome enough for you?” He must not have meant it because he carried on quickly, “I doubt you’ll find much information about me here. I do enjoy playing hard to get. But no one’s been so courteous to ask. I’d love to give an interview, but only if you intend to say good things about me.” He smiled, either good natured or good at pretending to be. “I do have starseeds, yes. But you have plenty here so it doesn’t make for a good bargaining tool if it’s common. I’ve never heard of anyone getting addicted to them. I’ll have to try one sometime.” He laughed then, like this was very funny. “I’m kidding, no. I would never eat my merchandise. I’ll save those for some Senshi, probably means more to them. My things come from everywhere, are you looking for something in particular? It might help me find something reasonable to offer.” He was looking at Bloodstone, who clearly did not know how to appreciate all of his treasures. “What’s your taste, something a bit more murder-y? What are you interested in, mining? Perhaps you’re a lapidarist?” He gave him a look over and clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “Perhaps not. But I’ll find something to win you over.” He moved a few things and reached beneath his table to pull out a few others. An intricately beaded pouch, a box of little tools, a stack of books, and a small box. Almadel laid them out for easy display, and opened the box to reveal two small silver earrings, set with vibrant red gems. He straightened the stack of books, most notably the one on the top–a leather bound tome whose age was not immediately perceivable. It was old, but well cared for; the symbol of Earth was embossed on the cover, intertwined with creeping roses. The pages had rough edges, and as Almadel flipped through it, as if to check that he’d left nothing inside, it allowed a peek at the first few pages. Scribbles, text. He moved too quickly to give time for proper examination. The scent of fresh roses carried on the wind, and he closed the book so he could sit up and look at his guests. “We’ll come to an agreement before the night is over, I’m sure. I’ve got a knack for uniting people with treasures they never knew they needed. And I’m asking for so little in return. Really, you can’t pass up this offer.”

Roselite almost jumped at the chance to interview this strange, briefly frightening man. He held his tongue only because he didn’t think Captain Bloodstone would have the patience for it.
But Captain Bloodstone also seemed unimpressed by the lack of information within the database, so… perhaps he might consent to Roselite rectifying the situation? Roselite had so many questions but lacked the confidence to ask them. Captain Bloodstone knew best. Roselite only needed to follow his lead.
Even so, he could not disguise his own intrigue. He watched Almadel bring out more merchandise. Roselite’s gaze lit up to see a stack of books.
“I… I could trade for one of those,” he said.
Roselite didn’t think the exchange was necessary; he would have given the wisp over without a reward, but it seemed impolite to argue about it much, and if he could smooth things over before Captain Bloodstone became too agitated…Guine Short tag is short because my brain has lost all function to string words together.

Bloodstone’s eyes narrowed on nothing in particular. He wasn’t sure he appreciated this Merchant’s taste in humor. He didn’t understand why he would assume anything about him made Almadel assume he would be interested in rocks and gems, carving or otherwise.
But there was something that drew his interest to the silver earrings with red gems. He wore earrings now, out of habit. He didn’t know why he’d always been interested in wearing the little red studs he had now, but they weren’t unique or all that special.
Then again, it was probably obvious to pick something like nicer red earrings when Bloodstone was already wearing some.
“What are these? Rubies?” he frowned as he went over to pick up one of the earrings to inspect. He glanced over at Roselite’s choice, thinking it was unsurprising that he would want something like a book. Obviously Bloodstone was going to take something too. Since he and Roselite found the wisp together, it was only fair that they would both get rewarded with some junk from the alien merchant.

If Almadel had any intention of parting with the wisp for only one prize, he didn’t let it show. On the contrary, Bloodstone’s friendliness made him all the more eager to stay on his good side. His smile remained in place and he gestured for Roselite to help himself, even going so far as to pass him a book or two to examine. He was gentle with him, like he thought he might have been a bit fragile. If an accident were to happen, Roselite might have forgive him, but Bloodstone seemed like he was ready to attack at the slightest provocation. He was a smart businessman, he wasn't going to take unnecessary risks. Besides, he was enjoying himself. “Rubies, no. Those are too common. With this clarity, this luster? I’d warrant you had a true gemsmith to work with something like this. They look pretty, though, don’t they? And dangerous. Just like you.”

Carefully, Roselite passed the wisp along in exchange for the offered books. They both seemed innocuous at first glance, but he found himself drawn to one bound in leather, the cover of which had been embossed with a vaguely familiar symbol entwined with creeping roses. His interest became further piqued by it when he gently flipped through the pages. Most were blank, but they all emitted the scent of roses.
“Thank you,” he mumbled, completing the trade.
Nervously, he glanced between Bloodstone and the merchant. Bloodstone seemed annoyed, or angry, or otherwise on edge. Roselite didn’t see any reason for hostility, but Bloodstone was more experienced and thus far more knowledgeable about potential dangers. Even so, Roselite hoped he wouldn’t decide to become aggressive.
More so than he already was, anyway.
“Um… they would look nice on you, Sir,” Roselite said of the earrings.
With any luck, he could coax Bloodstone out of here before Bloodstone’s mood worsened.
Maybe Roselite could find his way back here some other time. Fascinated as he was by it all, he was a bit disappointed that lingering with his Captain along didn’t seem advisable.

Bloodstone’s eyes narrowed on the alien man, but Roselite’s comment stopped him from throwing the earrings into the merchant’s face. Maybe poking his eye out with them. The man himself didn’t look like much of a fighter. Maybe Bloodstone would just take his starseed. And then they could keep everything left in that weird place.
Instead, he snorted his discontent and curled his fingers around the earrings. If Roselite said they would look nice on him, then maybe he would just have to keep them.
“You have your creature. We’re going,” he decided. They had their payment, although it looked like Roselite just picked up whatever was handed to him. To make sure they got compensation for their troubles, Bloodstone would just keep the earrings as well.
