Work wasn’t as difficult to find in the cities of Oba as it had been on the road. Asa’s skills as a healer were universally valuable, no matter his actual level of expertise. There was still so much he needed to learn, but since settling in Oba he had been able to apprentice himself to a number of older healer’s. Some had been more than reluctant to sign him on, seeing as he was not only an outsider but a sickly one at that. For a while he wondered if he should take on work as a tailor instead until his current teacher signed him on. It was a relief in a number of ways; not only would he get the training he needed, but as a new father any amount of coin he brought in was welcome!

In the beginning he had seen patients side by side with his teacher, but now Asa was comfortable enough to tend most of the minor problems on his own. Which is how he came to see a rather muscular Oban woman. She was dressed far better than anyone else in the lobby and as such stuck out. When he called her back he could see the way she hugged her arm to her chest, but only when Asa closed the door did he address it. “What seems to be troubling you today?”

Sariza was having a terrible day. She’d only been with the city guard for a week before she was being tasked with monitoring the lower rings. At first she’d been confused; wasn’t her position supposed to be with the upper sector? Yet, when they explained short staffing and a rash of violence she couldn’t very well turn them away. So, here she was, in a commoner’s clinic with her broken arm tucked close to her body. The shock had worn off long ago and all that was left was a burning pain that barely allowed her to think.

To see a foreign doctor was strange enough, but seeing how small he was was even odder. “A thief broke my arm when I tried to subdue him.”

“A thief? My, you’ve had a day.” Asa motioned towards the examining table and turned away for his gear while she presumably took a seat. “I take it you’re part of the city guard, then?” It certainly would explain the quality of her armor and the way she carried herself. The younger healer slipped his hand into one glove and was in the process of pulling another up to his elbow when he turned around. “I would prefer to do a full examination just to make sure this is your only injury, but if you prefer I can focus solely on your arm.” What if she was hiding a concussion? Or a few broken ribs that she’d mistaken as bruises?

A full body examination? Sariza’s cheeks darkened a little despite the situation. Of course she knew this was strictly professional, but that didn’t mean - Wait, was he blushing too? He’d clearly seen the way she reacted and now he wasn’t even LOOKING at her. Gods above. “If you think it’s necessary. My shoulder does hurt…” Sariza shifted a little on the table, trying her best to shrug the shoulder just to show him what she meant. At best she made it move a fraction before hissing in pain.

Asa stepped forward and started his examination by holding a slightly glowing hand beside her left temple. When he actually touched her head there was a slight thrumming due to the magic now flowing from him into her, and the warmth would surely help ease some of her discomfort. “Any headaches?” Her eyes looked clear, as did her coloring and the clamminess of her skin was likely due to the pain from her arm. At first he avoided the afflicted area completely and focused solely on the areas that hadn’t been discussed. There was a tenderness to her ribs which turned out to be just bruising so he was thankful enough for that. When it came to her arm, however ....”It’s clearly broken, but you’ve also dislocated your shoulder too and it’s started swelling. Putting it back into place will be painful.”

The news wasn’t anything she wasn’t expecting, but that didn’t make it any easier for Sariza to swallow. A dislocated shoulder needed to be cared for as soon as possible so if she’d caught it early enough one of the other guards could have fixed it. Now, though… “Can you do it yourself?” Putting a bone back into place would take swift strength and looking at his frail body didn’t exactly inspire confidence. There simply wasn’t any way to phrase that and be kind, especially not with the way the pain was making her moody.

“Ah, probably not.” While the healer kept up his soft, calm smile there was a dejected sense to it now. Even in a profession like this one needed a certain amount of physical strength and that simply wasn’t there for him. Still, they did have assistant’s for things like this and with an empathetic hand to her good shoulder Asa turned away. “Once I’ve mended and braced your broken bone then we’ll call someone in to help set your shoulder. I’m afraid that if we move the arm too much we might do more damage than good.”

With his help Sariza started to strip the gauntlet off her affected arm. At first she’d tried to do it herself, but between the swelling and the pain he’d had to step in. Just looking at it made her feel sick to her stomach. The flesh had started to mottle, shining through with varying shades of indigo and dark mauve, but it was the shape that really made her queasy. While not the worst break she could still see a large knot under the skin and the way her arm didn’t lay exactly straight told her just how nasty it was.

“One - two - “ On three Asa took her hand in his own and placed the other directly atop her arm. The resulting scream was enough to startle him and the way she squeezed his hand caused his knees to buckle. She really was much stronger than he was, but he couldn’t just tell her NOT to react to pain. So, instead, Asa focused on channeling his own discomfort into the healing arts. Magic poured from his hand into her arm, and while it wouldn’t be enough to completely heal the bone it was enough to help him maneuver it just enough to be properly set. A few bits of torn muscle would be healed, but the rest was better off fixing itself with time. By the end of it he was reaching for the splint - one handed, mind you - while making soothing noises to the larger Oban. “It’s alright - it’s over - I just need you to let go so I can fix the splint.”

For a moment Sariza had trouble doing what he asked. If anything she squeezed harder and it wasn’t until the healer physically buckled, his attempts at hiding his discomfort falling apart, that she released her grip. “Sorry, I’m sorry…!” One would have thought that with all the times she’d been hurt in the past that getting injured like this wouldn’t bother her this much but pain was just something she could never really get used to.

In all honesty he was just happy she hadn't managed to break a bone. As it was he would likely bruise and moving the appendage itself right now was hard to do, but he kept up a calm demeanor never the less. What good would it do if she saw him stressed? "No worries." Patting her arm with his 'good' hand, the healer moved over to a desk in the room and returned with the supplies needed for a splint. "Keep this one for six weeks and come back to me once that times over. I want to give your arm another thorough exam before I release you. Just in case."

"Six weeks?" How was she supposed to go back to work with her arm in a splint? You're not, that's how. The thought was sobering. If she couldn't return to work then she would be stuck in the estate for six weeks under her caregiver's watchful eye and at best she might be allowed to visit Faisal under strict supervision. That would...admittedly be much better than being kept away but still....

Asa hmmed under his breath and with a nudge from his foot the healer drug a stool closer to the examination table. Once he was properly settled he motioned for the Oban to lay her arm across his lap. "I'm afraid so, miss. It could be longer if you don't give your wound proper time to heal." With a pointed look he set about wrapping her arm. If she went out willy nilly and exacerbated the break then she very likely could lose all function of that arm. Someone as muscular as she was probably took pride in her physical prowess and he'd really rather not take that away.

What bit of numbing he'd been able to do seemed to help. She could certainly feel the way he was manipulating the limb, how even through Asa's gentle touch it seemed to feel wrong but it certainly didn't hurt. It allowed her to relax enough that watching him work didn't seem as nauseating as before.

"If it helps then I'll do my best to follow your orders." She would hate every moment of it, but Sariza wasn't keen on returning to a healer's office. "You're surprisingly gentle for a foreigner. Most that come to Oba to study are much more...abrasive."

Wrapping a splint was almost therapeutic in a way. It was calming, the way the bandage rolled over and under, over and under, as if the rolling waves of unease surrounding the break itself were receding.

"I wonder what it is, then? Because you aren't the first to say so." Asa mused as he tugged the last bit of bandage into a knot. When he was satisfied with his work he turned to the desk once more, this time brining back a length of cloth and helping to fashion a sling. "I just don't like to see those in pain suffer more than they have to. You've already done so much by coming to me; it wouldn't be good if you didn't come back for further treatment just because you were scared."
