Quote:
Wanted Wisps (11) : Small, wispy orbs are floating through the city. They can be found during the day but are far more visible at night. They seem to bob along a few feet off the ground and sometimes flicker in and out of sight. They are warm to the touch and seem to be somewhat magical in nature. Anyone can gather them in their hands; they do not quite feel solid but cannot slip through fingers or escape any container. If you find one of these, you must return it to the merchant. If you do not roleplay with him, it will be assumed that you returned the piece to hi anyway; there is no way to keep these. Please see this post for information on turning in the Wisp and claiming your prize.

They’d followed the Senshi for almost half an hour now. Every time they started getting too far away, Bloodstone would simply teleport to steer them back towards where it would be easier to keep them contained. He wanted Roselite to see how Senshi worked up close, and this one seemed to have some kind of water magic that made everything wet and slippery. He couldn’t use his teleporting too much, and when the Senshi started getting too annoying to deal with, Bloodstone teleported in front of them, reached his hand into their chest, and pulled their starseed free.

Okay so that might have been an oversimplification of the fight that took place. They had managed to throw Bloodstone off balance with their magic, and he somehow got a cut on the back of his hand from a sharp object they’d tried using as a weapon.

But in the end, Bloodstone was left with the starseed in his hand and the lifeless body at his feet.

Roselite tried to hold back a heavy sigh but didn’t quite manage it.

He had his tablet out and open, taking notes as Bloodstone handled the Senshi. Power level, magical abilities, physical description — it was all there, collected for the purposes of updating the database, to offer what little information he could gather. It wasn’t much, but it allowed him to be useful. If they collected enough, surely it would benefit them some day.

Then Bloodstone ripped the Senshi’s starseed out and rendered Roselite’s effort pointless.

Captain,” Roselite complained.

He was still mad about Bloodstone trying to take Yuuri’s starseed that one time, so complaining came easier to him, at least temporarily.

“Why am I here taking notes if you’re just going to render the notes useless by taking their starseed?”

If only his voice sounded aggressive instead of whiney. Sometimes, Roselite’s naturally light, delicate tone seemed like a curse.

It was actually quite amusing that Roselite was mad at him. He was probably the least intimidating person Bloodstone had ever met, and yet he thought it was wise to get sassy with him.

Bloodstone ignored him for a moment, checking the back of his hand to see if the injury he’d received needed immediate medical attention, and when he was satisfied that it was just superficial he lifted his gaze to Roselite.

“If you’re just taking notes on the Senshi, then you’re missing the point of this outing,” Bloodstone pointed out with a frown. “You can’t fight as it is. You should be learning how to handle Senshi by observing so when one inevitably attacks you, you can defend yourself.”

“I was observing,” Roselite argued, but he was beginning to mumble now, losing some of his confidence — which he didn’t have much of to begin with. “This Senshi had water magic, strong enough to knock you off balance, and they were resourceful enough to find efficient weapons among their surroundings.”

With another sigh, Roselite added to his notes, Subject’s starseed was removed. Threat neutralized.

True, acquiring starseeds was part of their duties, especially Bloodstone, with a role in Special Operations. Roselite just didn’t see why he had to be there to watch it happen.

“I’ll get the report written when we return to Negaspace,” he said, staring at the ground instead of allowing his gaze to drift to the motionless body.

The Senshi was their enemy, so he should feel nothing as a result of their timely death, but the thought of it made Roselite uncomfortable. With time and effort, maybe they could have persuaded the Senshi to join them.

Just then, Roselite’s shifting, avoidant gaze landed on something else — a flickering orb of light several yards away. From this distance, it almost seemed like a firefly, only it was significantly larger than a bug.

“What’s that?” he asked.

Bloodstone gave Roselite a look that clearly said he was pushing his luck. There was no need to observe his weaknesses, just that of the enemy. He would have to make sure he read over Roselite’s notes before they were submitted. He didn’t want anyone reading about how some senshi managed to throw him off balance.

But before he could ask to see what Roselite had written, he caught sight of the same thing Roselite saw. “It’s just a bug,” he shrugged.

Okay, so he knew this wasn’t just a bug. Celeste brought it to his attention that someone was looking for small creatures like this. Or magical floating lights. Whatever they were.

“Alright, let’s see how you do, trying to catch it,” Bloodstone nodded, crossing his arms over his chest as he watched expectantly for Roselite to do as he told him.

Roselite gave Bloodstone a look that clearly said he didn’t want to try catching it, but would do it anyway. He was nothing if not obedient.

Cautiously, Roselite dismissed his tablet and approached the glowing… thing. Spherical in shape, the light continued to flicker in and out, bobbing along some unseen path. It was like nothing Roselite had ever seen before, but it also wasn’t entirely foreign.

“It’s like a will-o’-the-wisp,” he said, close enough to get a better look at it.

The wisp floated about, drawing near before darting away again. It never went far, and it didn’t move so fast that Roselite had to chase it. He wondered, did it experience consciousness? Was it trying to lead him somewhere? Or were its movements random, a mindless pattern, flitting from one place to another?

The next time it drew near enough, Roselite blocked it’s path with one hand to slow it down, then, before it could regroup, he brought his other hand close to catch it between them.

“It’s warm,” Roselite informed Bloodstone. “And… sort of solid? But… not really solid at all.”

He held onto the wisp gently, wary of hurting it — if it could even feel pain.

“You’re far from any bogs and swamps, you know,” Roselite told it.

“I prefer my flat, thanks,” Bloodstone responded to Roselite’s comment to the wisp. It was a joke. He was not good at telling jokes. It probably fell horribly flat and it didn’t help that Roselite was clearly still mad at him about the whole incident with his friend. A mistake that wouldn’t happen again because he would either not offer to help, or he would just not return the starseed that he took.

He was tempted to clarify that he meant Roselite’s reference to the bogs and swamps, but decided it was probably not worth it. And he was probably not happy with him about the whole Senshi starseed thing. Not that Bloodstone cared.

“There’s someone who has been collecting them for a reward of some kind,” he decided to share, because it was important that Roselite knew as much information as possible if he was going to be of any use to anyone. “Carnallite saw a sign posted the other night. Thought it might be something the White Moon was up to. I haven’t heard of any Negaverse operations using those things.”

And if they could find and take care of this potential threat, well… That would mean one less thing for the Negaverse to worry about later.

The corner of Roselite’s mouth twitched, like he didn’t know if it would be appropriate for him to be amused or not.

Was Bloodstone joking? Roselite was never sure if his Captain even had a sense of humor. Bloodstone was so cold and distant most of the time, sort of gloomy and certainly not the most social person. Which usually suited Roselite fine. It meant he didn’t have to search for something to say during the occasions when his brain wouldn’t cooperate. They could sit silently in Bloodstone’s office, working in tandem — or at home in August’s apartment, existing within the same space without disturbing one another.

“We should return it, then,” Roselite decided, smiling at the warm ball of light in his hands.

Unlike Bloodstone, he had no plans to terminate a potential threat. Roselite simply wished to know where the wisp came from.

He approached his Captain and gave the wisp what he hoped came across as a reassuring pat.

“We’ll teleport you there,” he said.

Then, as soon as they made contact, much like the wisp, he and Bloodstone flickered out of sight with their prize.
