“Are you certain?” Kian sat near the edge of the campfire, his bi-colored gaze gleaming with amusement as he watched his youngest standing before him. While he had been more occupied during the childhood of his two oldest sons, the hybrid had found traveling a good time to bond with the younger twins that he had taken across Tendaji with Rhonann. Currently he was spending an evening with Branna while waiting on the other two to return from some sort of venture and so far the afternoon had passed without much worry.

Branna pursed his lips and nodded. “Yes.” He replied, his azure gaze set with determination as he stared down his father. The child had already told his father about his plans - to obtain an instrument from the village that they were currently camping near. Kian had wanted to loan him some coin for it but the child was adamant about earning the instrument for himself.

A soft sigh left his lips and the mystic shrugged. “Fine then. We’ll be here for about another three days to stock up on supplies.” He finally conceded, his efforts to try and win the child over to his much more simple plan obviously in vain. “Still, I’m curious to see what you have planned.”

“I’ll figure it out.” Replied Branna with a firm nod. The child wanted to prove that he could actually do something for himself. Maybe it was just because of something someone else may have said in the village but he wasn’t about to let his father know that! Branna wanted to prove that he could be just as useful as any adult and not be some spoiled brat.

“Alright, if you say so.” Kian gave a shrug of his fingers before studying Branna a moment longer. “So what type of instrument are you thinking about?” He finally asked, his hands reaching out as he fed a bit of more energy into the crackling flames. A couple of fish were on skewers and the spiced meat was roasting slowly along the edges of the fire along with some roots and other vegetables they had gathered and bought in town. It was a good experience to be able to eat by a fire while on the road again - something that Kian had actually missed despite enjoying Zyphire’s cooking back in Zena.

Branna blinked at his father in confusion before actually smiling. If his father was asking about the instrument then surely he was interested in his passions! The youngling found himself scooting closer to Kian so that he could also keep an eye on the roasting fish while they were talking. Even if Kian was already taking care of things the youngling enjoyed seeming more mature and helpful than his more rambunctious sister. “I think a flute.” He mused as he reached out to poke carefully at one of the skewers, an attempt to rotate it slightly more to the left.

“A flute, hmm.” Kian leaned forward just a bit so that he could keep an eye on his son, his expression reflecting worry as he made certain his child didn’t burn himself in the dancing flames. “That’s a fun choice.” He commented as he carefully twisted the rest of the roasting fish around the fire. It was best if he just allowed Branna one little thing here and there after all.

Branna nodded as he settled back on the fallen log that he was sharing with his father. Sometimes it was really hard to read his father, especially his expression when compared to the playful words he would sometimes offer but this time it truly seemed like he was interested in Branna’s passions which made the youngling swell up with pride. If his father supported him then surely he was doing the right thing!

After a few quiet moments the pair stopped fiddling with the food and Kian found himself glancing back over towards Branna. “I know you want to earn your own flute but if you can’t then maybe I can let you borrow mine.” He offered quietly as he scooted back and crossed his legs to be more comfortable on the log.

“Wait what!?” Branna blurted before glancing away with a flush. He normally never exclaimed like that but his father had surprised him! Since when did his father learn to play the flute? Or did he just have one that he enjoyed as a collection item or something? He had heard some music before when they were camping - usually late at night so he couldn’t really pinpoint it but he had never thought it would be his father! His father was a mystic and always throwing jokes around or going off on little side missions….but Branna had never witnessed him playing music before!

“Mmhmm.” Kian nodded and a grin crossed his lips at his son’s obvious surprise. “I play on occasion. Why do you not think your father still has some hidden talents?” He teased the youngling with a mischievous wink. Honestly he had noticed Branna’s growing interest in music and while Kian couldn’t understand exactly the rhythm of dance at least he knew that his musical talents had gone to one of his children.

Branna’s cheeks felt warm and it was not the fire’s fault this time for the flush. “I’m sorry. I just didn’t know, papa.” He protested almost weakly as he bit his bottom lip. How did he not know that his own father enjoyed music like he did? Was that haunting melody he heard sometimes really from his father and his flute? Would he actually be able to get his own flute or did he even want to try for one now if he could instead have something from his father? Branna’s mind swirled with thoughts and he ended up almost glaring at the fire for his own indecision.

Kian’s gaze softened and he found himself reaching out so that he could rustle his son’s hair. “Hey, there’s no need to apologize for not knowing.” He replied with a gentle smile. “I never really had the chance to play for you before. Maybe I should do that soon?” Kian glanced towards the fire and let out a chuckle. “That is whenever I’m not trying to prevent the fish from burning.” Said fish were already getting pretty roasted and he quickly started pulling them from the fire. If the fish were nearly scorched then that would mean the rest of their quick meal would be ready soon enough.

The youngling’s azure gaze widened at the offer. “Could you? Truly?” Branna breathed as he started to help his father pull the food away from the fire. One of the fish was too hot for his fingers and he let out a slight hiss before pulling the definitely more pink digit towards his mouth to blow cool air on it. “Whoops.” That definitely stung a bit!

“Are you alright?” Kian immediately darted towards Branna and reached for the hand. “How bad is it?” His bi-colored gaze narrowed as he traced over the injured digit and allowed some healing to clear up the slight blister. A sigh of relief left Kian’s lips as he carefully released his son’s hand and went to gather the rest of the food on his own. Soon enough they had a pile of roasted vegetables, some of those sweet roots with a sugar glaze and plenty of peppered fish to share for dinner. “Just be more careful around the fire, okay?” Kian managed as he held out a skewer towards Branna. “As long as you stop burning your fingers then I’ll gladly play a piece for you.” He added after another moment, his worry easing as he watched his son take the fish from him.
