Quote: Star Candy (3) : In your mailbox, locker, or desk drawer appears a bag of star candy! There is no indication of where or who it came from other than a small tag that reads: “Happy Star Festival!” The small, colorful pieces of sugar seemed to almost glow faintly, and after eating them, the world looks a bit different. Cartoonish and much less…real. Is it a hallucination? Is it some new reality? The strange vision lasts only half an hour, and after it wears off, the rest of the candy seems to disappear. How strange! The upper echelon at Argent Industries did put the effort into maintaining a positive working environment, so Emmy wasn't surprised to find the small bag of star candy in her desk. She also took the hint. The festival was large, and crowded, and exciting. It also took place during hot summer days and humid nights. It wouldn't be strange at all if someone collapsed from exhaustion, which meant that now was the time to stock up on energy. Jadarite went out to drain after work, and she took the candy with her. She popped a few pieces in her mouth. The shift was gradual, but after a few minutes, right when she was getting close to the festivities, she began to notice the shift. Proportions of things were shifting. Everything seemed to be edged in thick lines. Jada tried cleaning her glasses, but that did nothing, so she parked herself and squinted while she watched passerbys with oversized heads and not enough shadows on their bodies.

Lt. Ekanite had not thought Painite the type to get him a little gift from the festival, but he could not think who else might be able to get inside his apartment without a key to leave it on his desk. She could teleport, of course, if she really wanted to get in but she did actually also have a key for emergencies. Never once had he seen her use it, as she never powered down and had no reason to bug him in his time 'off'. She liked to keep to a schedule. So it seemed so very nice of her to give him a bag of candy, knowing how fond he was of the festival and all the strangeness that seemed to surround it. He just had to get her something in return, so he took the candy with him (as a pick me up for later, of course) and set out to check out the stalls and do some patrolling while he was at it. He was getting pretty good at sneaking around in the shadows, or so he liked to think. He tried the candy while he was on his way, sensing another aura and heading toward it to spot another Negaverse soldier sitting down. "You doing okay? You look a little green. Actually. A lot green." Blinking, he looked around and finally seemed to notice that things were not quite right.

A voice floated towards Jadarite from some nearby shadows. It was cheerful and odd and talking about colors, and that made Jada scowl deeper, thinking that sounds had somehow been affected too. Then she turned and realized that she recognized the agent that the voice was coming from, even if the lines of his face seemed off. She did not think that whatever this was had changed his words. That was just how he was. "Hello, Ekanite," she said, shifting slightly on her park bench and putting the effort into not looking quite so much like she'd just bitten into a lemon. "Something is wrong. This candy my boss gave me may have been expired?" She kept her voice steady, but she looked down at the bag, trying to find any nutrition facts or best by dates. There was nothing. Also, whatever effect it was having on her was only growing stronger. Now everything seemed oddly bright.

He grinned brightly, though her expression made him waver a bit. She looked so down in the dumps, and that was never a good thing in his book, no matter who he was talking to. Smiling a little less brightly, but not yet capable of frowning unless he was thinking too hard, he approached carefully. "Oh, you got some candy too? I wonder if they got it from the same place, because I had some and I think it's giving me uh... color blindness? Or... some kind of head trip. I'm not sure." He laughed, not seeming too worried about it, and held up the bag he had gotten from Painite, or so he thought. He showed it to her, noting that it did indeed look similar to the one she was holding, though neither looked right. They looked like assets in a cell shaded video game or something. He almost felt like he was in a classic cartoon, or an updated version of one. Everything just looked so... fun! "Is it legal for someone to sell something like this? It's crazy! Are you seeing what I'm seeing? That trash can over there looks like it might start talking! Or singing, even!"

Jadarite turned towards the trash can in question, scowling again as soon as she was no longer facing. Despite the colors, she did not see any sort of face on it, at least at first. On second glance, the handle sticking out of the top began to look suspiciously like a nose. She shuddered. "Do not sing," she ordered it, on the off chance that it had magically gained the ability to hear. "And you," she said, turning back to the other Lieutenant. "Do not tell the police. I don't know if this is legal, and I don't want to find out." Usually, she didn't worry about law enforcement. If she was caught draining a homeless person or something, she could always knock out the police officer as well, but this situation was different. With all the colors and proportions being wrong, she wasn't sure if she could even focus enough to take someone's energy right now. She dug her fingernails into the park bench. At least it felt solid under her hands. At least Ekanite didn't seem as affected by it all as she was. That was a plus. Quieter, she added, "What do we do?"

"I want it to sing!!" Ekanite laughed exuberantly, unable to deny how very weird this all was, but also delighting in that strangeness. It was just up his alley. Plus, there could have been a lot worse side effects from some candy, right? If this were an allergy, he hoped it was how he reacted to anything else he was allergic too instead of sneezing or worse. Because this was pretty amazing, as far as he was concerned. He did draw his excitement bit at her warning, nodding his head sharply and almost saluting at the tone, if only because it reminded him of when Painite gave him an order. Usually in the same kind of situation, when she was annoyed or stressed out. Not exactly the same, as things never looked like they were walking through a cartoon when he trained with his Boss. "I mean. I guess we stop eating the candy, huh? Though it did taste really good.. and this is fun! Uhm. But if you're worried," he shifted gears, seeing the anxiety on her face and wanting to help alleviate it if he could. He was nothing if not dedicated to the other soldiers around him. And anyway, he would always help his friends. "Maybe some water to flush it out of our systems? Or... sleep it off? I don't feel bad or weird. Everything just looks... wacky."

The bag of candy was still in one of Jadarite's hands. Her knuckles were white from how tight she was holding the bag closed. That wasn't some sort of idiom. They were literally white, and small movement lines came off of her hand as she clutched the bag even tighter. She might have growled if Ekanite hadn't been right there. Instead, she simply reached into the bag, fished out what was left of the candy, and threw it with every ounce of strength she had at the nearest wall. It bounced far more than it had any right to, leaving more of those lines in its wake. Jada just shook her head. Then she crumpled the cellophane and sent that off to her subspace pocket. So much for her nice treat and her evening of draining. "Yes. Sleep," she decided. "That's what I'm going to do." Her eyes had never left Ekanite, and she looked at him as he continued to seem happy about whatever had just happened. "Will you be okay out here?" she asked.
