Laike didn't know why his sister was so insistent on him spreading the news. He hardly expected her to believe him — people on fire were usually rolling on the ground, not attacking other people, and usually there weren't monsters in mass evacuations — but she did, and she glared down at him with tight-lipped insistence as he sat on the floor playing Bloodborne. He pouted back up at her, having gotten killed because of her shoulder-shaking antics, and when his character woke in the Hunter's Dream, he retired the controller to the pillow sitting next to him. On it sat Jinx, a black bat flower that was his partner of the month.
When he pushed his lower lip out at her, his sister dropped his phone in his lap. "Call. Him."
He thought about asking why, but Laike knew she wouldn't relent. "Okay, fine. But this is dumb and I hate it." He dialed the number she gave, stared pitifully at her, and she stuck her tongue out back at him.
Then he hung up the phone after two rings. "No answer," he stated matter-of-factly, and gave a lopsided shrug.
"Li, you dumbshit!" His sister seized his shoulders again, shook him back and forth again, and Laike felt the whiplash trying to develop in his neck. His sister shook and shook and shook, her face screwing up into a grimace every time Laike's puffy ponytail tickled her nose. "People need to know what happened to you! Besides, he's safe! He's not a news guy, he just does spooky radio broadcasts! Even if he doesn't believe you, it's totally good for his show!"
"Spooky broadcasts? Like, spooky romance broadcasts?" He asked, craning his neck back to look up at her.
"No!!" His sister slapped the back of his head. "Call him or I'm telling Mom that you're not going to college!"
"Okay, okay —" Laike scrambled for his phone, which had fallen into his lap during the commotion, and touched his recent call. Again it rang, and Laike felt his anxiety hike up his heart rate with each passing second.

Honestly, Alston wasn't used to his phone ringing all that often. His family wasn't one to call and his friends were few and far between. So when he heard the familiar tones of his phone he figured it had to be Vincent calling.
Which made it all the more confusing when he sound suddenly stopped just as he was about to grab the phone. Odd...Vincent didn't normally hang up on him like that. Perhaps the other boy had simply meant to call someone else? But then he'd at least let Alston answer and apologize for the miscall....right? Hrm. He pondered this for a moment before shrugging and turning to go back to his work. Maybe it was a spam call or something...
He had just been getting back into editing the audio for his latest broadcast when he heard the tones of his ringing phone one again. He turned quickly this time, snatching the phone up before it could cease it's chirping once again. The number on the screen wasn't one he recognized and that surely piqued his interest. Wrong number? Prank call? ...Or was someone finally calling in about his podcast?
Well, only one way to find out!
"Hello?" It was certainly a chipper sounding voice Laike would hear on the other side of the line. Once stripped of it's broadcasting and other sound effects Alston's voice was pleasant to listen to. One could practically hear the smile he wore on his face as he spoke.

"Uh —" Any words he thought he had ahold of instantly evaporated, leaving his tongue wagging voiceless. He didn't have expectations for the call, didn't know how the phone would be answered, but somehow, hello wasn't on his list of possible outcomes.
In the distance, a hissed give me that, a yelp, a muffled scratching filtered through the speaker. This time, a girl's voice breathed a short huff. "Hi! My name's He, and we're calling because my brother got attacked by monsters! Isn't that right, Li?"
A distant thock, an ouch, and Laike answered with a reproachful "yeah."
"Anyway, I'm a huuuuuuge fan of your podcast, I listen to it every time, and I thought, maybe my brother's story could give you some juicy bits?"
"You said you wanted to report this —"
His sister covered the microphone with her hand. "Oh, pipe down, Li, nobody would believe you. Besides, this is way cooler. You should hear the stuff this guy comes up with!"
Then she uncovered the phone. "Sorry, brother being dumb. Anyway, here he is, he's totally enamored with the idea of giving you his story. Isn't that right, Li? Right. Okay, here he is." One hand on hip and the other arm locked at the elbow, she forced her brother to take his phone back.
Her brother, who made a sound like his soul left his body. But he accepted his phone, now forced into the whole affair, and swallowed heavily. "I, uh, err…" ********. Words. Right.
"It was at the Farnsworth building." Yep, that was helpful. There's the whole story. Now maybe he could hang up and go back to Bloodborne.

Well....this was...different.
Even as all the commotion on the other end was occurring, Alston stayed quiet and simply listened. While this was a highly unusual call it certainly wasn't a wrong number. No, these people had meant to call him. Whether they were ready to talk to him was another story.
"Well thank you for being a loyal listener, and maybe we can talk sometime after this juicy story gets shared, hrm?" He would LOVE to talk to fans! It was honestly wonderful to know they were out there.
But then the phone was being passed along, and this new voice didn't seem too eager to share many details. It had been briefly mentioned this 'Li' had been attacked by monsters? Now that was a scoop! Alston made up monsters weekly for his show...but to get real monster stories to play around with... Those were few and far between.
Didn't matter that he often was out there -with- what most in the city would deem monsters. Such details held no baring on this particular story.
"The Farnsworth Building, hrm? Well, that's a start! But what is it that happened there exactly? What did you see? What did these monsters look like? Any details you can remember will help!"
He had a pad of paper ready, already making such helpful notes such as: Farnsworth Building Monsters??? Less than eager witness.

"Uhhhhh…" Too many questions, too many places to start. "It — I was there to deliver sandwiches. You know, delivery driver, trying to make a buck. It was like, a regular work day? But the guy gave me a joke name, because the secretary wasn't having it. And then these… I guess they were guys that showed up?"
"One of them was on fire!" His sister shouted from further away.
Pulling the phone away, Laike muttered back to her, "you're the one that put me up to this, remember? If I have to tell it, you have to stay quiet." The pair stared at each other for a long minute until He blew a petulant raspberry and she retired to the couch with an audible huff.
"It was a guy in black and blue, but he carried a big spear. Like something you would see out of Dynasty Warriors? And, the person that was with him looked like a kid on fire? Except he had no stomach, it was just like… A furnace, I guess. Like a metal front with fire behind it. And his eyes were black and burning.
"He grabbed my neck, and his hands were super hot. Um, I think I got burn scars, actually… Like it blistered and peeled and stuff. Then they had me go through the floors and tell people to evacuate, and if they knew me at all, they would've picked literally anyone else…"
Laike frowned. "The rest is kinda hazy. I think I passed out, and I woke up to everything burning."demy-stardust thank you for your patience heart
