The warmth of the city air bit differently in the summer. The smells, sights and sounds almost feeling new again after spending time away. Reed had taken an extended leave of absence, from his duties, from life in general. Offering academic advisement only, and from a great distance away. He’d needed to travel for family, for business, but more importantly? He’d needed to leave for the sake of himself. He’d have made a useless captain if he’d continued on the way he had, listless, rudderless. As things had gotten better, had changed, he’d clung to the past. Like a child with a security blanket. Except life simply didn’t work that way.

It was change and adapt or be discarded. So he’d left. And now that he’d returned? It was time to get back into it, full swing. Whether Reed felt ready or not was irrelevant. He was a captain and he needed to start acting like one.

Pulling the visage of Prehnite on after so long was a lot like slipping into an old skin or a well worn pair of gloves. Not completely unfamiliar, but it took a moment to begin feeling right in it again.

To adjust

Reed found that he’d missed being Prehnite. The thrum of power and heightened senses. Stalking a territory with grace and ease. Looking for potential prey below. Worthy prey, those most deserving of his particular attentions. Anyone could pull a starseed or fill an energy quota; Prehnite was a far more discerning connoisseur. Even as the organization demanded quantity, he enjoyed ensuring there was some measure of quality to the work he did, for his own peace of mind if not the direct benefit of the cause. He was reminded of how much he’d missed his comrades. Xenotime and leocite, even ochre. The queen and general king.

Focused so much on reminiscing - on scanning the area for a potential target - that he’d failed to pay attention to little else….

Crocoite was on the prowl, as he often was, but tonight he was not focusing on a quota. Instead, he had his own goals in mind, his senses tuned to the kind of prey, if that were the right word for it, that he was in need of. Like a beacon on a radar, he felt the ping of an aura nearby. Chaos. Good, that was just what he was hoping for. This one was the same rank as himself, as far as he could tell, which was a curiosity to him.

He did so like to see how others did their own patrols. Figure out what was important to them, and see how they went about defending their ideas of honor and duty. For himself, his motivations were entirely self-centered, but at the end of the day he did not think himself all that different to anyone else.

The difference usually was just a matter of being able to admit it.

Calling his cane to his hand, though he did not need it to walk, Crocoite made his way toward the source of the aura. He spotted Prehnite from not too far off, nodding his head toward the other before approaching.

"Good evening," he said casually, though he was still not particularly good at talking to others. It sounded forced, at least to his own ears, when he tried to be nice. Like he was hiding something else, another intention, just below the surface of his words. Of course, that was usually exactly what he was doing. "I don't think I've seen you around this area before. Captain Crocoite."

He offered his free hand for a handshake in greeting, noting that the other looked a bit distracted and wondering vaguely what had his attention.

Prehnite held back a flinch at the sudden intrusion, brazenly accompanied by an introduction. Internally berating himself as he should have noticed such an obvious approach well beforehand. The man'd even nodded....

He'd gotten careless in his absence...

"Prehnite, it's a pleasure." and if he had to explain he was a captain, if the adornments on his lapel and aura failed to give off as much as the statement of that fact would, then he'd certainly lost his touch. Eying Captain Crocoites hand like it held a bear trap instead of a simple open palm, Prehinte reached to shake it. The motion stilted and perfunctory in nature. "Haven't you? Is this your usual haunt then?" he could remember being a lieutenant and being territorial in some ways. With quotas to fill and mandates hanging overhead, usually followed closely by disappointed generals and menial tasks..or worse...

Crococite was no lieutenant though, and Prehnite had never met him before. So what did he want? Or was there a more important 'they', who'd sent Crococite looking for him?

"I kid of course. Honestly I'd be more concerned if you had seen me around, since I've been away for some time." and Prehnite let the tease of it linger in his voice, aimed for 'jovial', and hoped it didn't come out as terse. "It's good to know they haven't figured out how to clone us for the use of simple tasks just yet. I'd hate the idea of being easily replicated." replaced certainly, they were all replaceable, but they were also all individuals. The one boon of being part of the organization was that not a one of them was exactly alike, even if they were all tasked the same mission as a great equalizer of sorts.

He would be the only Prehnite, he was sure of that. As sure as he was that he would only ever encounter one Crocoite.

"I wouldn't go so far as to say 'usual'. I try to branch out, but I've been through here a few times," Crocoite said enigmatically, waving his hand. He did not want to trouble himself with the often cumbersome politics of Negaverse patrol turf. He was fine with others thinking they had somehow marked areas for themselves, so long as he never encountered them so he did not have to argue with or battle them to prove the point.

He chuckled at the other's comments, though, looking curious. So he had been away, then. For what reason? Crocoite would have to lead up to something personal like that, he imagined, unless the reason was not all that important or serious. People tended not to want to share information they thought could be harmful to them, while pride made most run their mouths wen they thought they were untouchable. If there was something to fear, there was always far more caution.

What did this Prehnite fear?

"In a way we are all replaceable, I suppose. They can always just corrupt another starseed and create new soldiers. But we make ourselves valuable with our actions, and our unique skills. At least, that's how I would hope it works, as I try to leave my mark on the Negaverse."

“How very true, that the Negaverse rewards so well our own unique personal abilities.” and the rhetoric sounded tired to his own ears. Whatever truth lay within it. Prehnites gaze on Crocoite turned gently scrutinizing, wondering if he’d made a mistake about not recognizing the man, but no, he could bring to mind no instance of ever meeting Crocoite before. Not even in passing.

“I wouldn’t worry to much though, it seems you must have left your mark on someone. I doubt you managed to become a Captain through charm alone?” And Prehnite found the will to smile. To resist the urge to give a dismissive humm, thank him for his introduction and be off. The other wasn’t here to fight over territory, he didn’t have a task to ask after.

Though he also didn’t look like he’d been hunting.

Prehnite was rather at a loss for what Crocoite wanted. Maybe the other Captain was simply being friendly? However rare a possibility that was. They were technically allies, and Prehnite could stand to be nice until he had a genuine reason to be anything else.

Besides with the paucity of information on him, he couldn’t judge the other Captain by his looks alone. He could be patient to see what he needed, and then, ever so politely, tell him to ******** off if he didn’t want any part of it.

Crocoite chuckled, offering an enigmatic shrug of his shoulders.

"I did my job well enough up until now. But I wish to push myself further. I am not content being handed promotions when others think it time. It might just be more fun to make the choice for them, and give them no reason to deny it. Though, I suppose everyone who craves power thinks the same way. I don't intend to fall into the same traps other Generals have allowed themselves to fall into."

He noticed that he was speaking a little more freely than he wanted to be, but the other was easy enough to get along with. It was a strange idea for him, as he was not really used to having anyone around long enough to talk to or get to know. He most certainly did not have anyone he would call a friend readily.

Except Novus, he supposed, but the big dumb dinosaur made it very hard not to like him in some small capacity.

"The only way to stand out is to do things differently. I intend to utilize our powers in a more effective way, that will allow those who are interested the opportunities they seek to prove themselves. Killing senshi or knights, hunting large amounts of energy, or bartering for the starseeds that fuel the pathetic, otherwise useless lives of the civilians around us. Everyone has a price, and a goal. Desires, and abilities they may not know how to use to get them there. I intend to bridge that gap between skill and action, on the path we decide for ourselves."

'How charming' Prehnite thought, an amused tilt to his grin 'A well devoted cog in the machine, one that clearly strives for greatness above all the others.' Prehnite wasn't sure if he should have been impressed by the sheer voracity of apatite the man had for his perceived climb to greatness, or stunned by the fact that he hadn't yet realized the truth of it all - that the greatness was a façade. That no accolade or goal, however lofty, that no team however highly trained and well utilized - none - ever survived the hollow maw of the void they called home. No one died well or died old, they simply lived out their purpose and then died. In some blaze of glory or whimpering crush beneath someone else's heel.

The leaders changed, the motives changed, and the rules changed. Fitted and refitted to best suit the newest ideal. How quaint it was someone still believed in it all. Prehnite was invested briefly, Crocoite was well spoken, his key points intriguing. He wasn't an unlikeable person, and Prehinte was part and parcel to the whole of what he was selling, a better place amongst the masses of peers who called the Negaspace that held their operation home.

"I'm sorry, I just want to be crystal clear that I'm following along with this correctly." Prehnite breathed, running long pale fingers back through lilac locks as he stared Crocoite down, clearly contemplating something. "You're basically, a crocodile themed pimp? Except instead of hookers and blow, you're peddling hopes and dreams." Prehnite tsk'd grin turning sharp as he corrected himself briefly "No. I apologize...You're peddling cost efficient optimization, and toting yourself as the miracle drug that will get us there." and Prehnites hands fell gingerly at his hips, fingers briefly brushing the hilt of sheathed knifes held about by a cross of purple leather straps.

"Now Captain Crococite. I want you to really sell it to me. Make me the sort of offer that would have me buy me into your latest product. Tell me how you'd 'get me there'; what makes you the sort of man with a skill set that could manage such an achievement..." Prehnite wondered how much this man had seen, that he was making such offers. If he was making them genuinely, or simply looking for more lackeys, a larger group of skilled people to back and bolster whatever ranks he currently held beneath him.

"We could make a competition of it even, if the talking becomes boring. You'd best me and I'd listen. Maybe you'd even decide I'm not worth your time or energy, if you had more information to go off of?" and Prehnite wondered what subset of faction the man had fallen into. Likely infOps, Axinites people. Though he could have been anything.

A monster of a youma, a captain with teeth. An interesting intermittent meetup. Prehnite found himself impressed and irritated all in one. Sobering thing that he had instigated on his own, firm re-welcoming back into a world he'd stepped out of ever so briefly.

He found that he held ire and longing both, encapsulate them in his mind. Thought of the rift - for seeing the creature that Crococite had summoned up so simply.

There - that was what he missed. Not the people, only so bare few of those did he care for. No, he missed the youma, the screaming void of the rift, the beckoning unknown. Corrupt Senshi and their terrifying magics which he'd never understood but had found ways to tolerate, for all that they had been enemies they had also so often become his saviors..

Prehnite dragged his thoughts with him off of rooftops, into a run, into space and the void beyond as he blinked himself from one instance to the next. Felt the draining tug of 'exhaustion', for how long it'd been since he'd practiced using the trick of it after battle.

He'd go hunting energy another night - maybe even make amends with the curious captain. For the moment? He only wanted his bed.
