It was 2015. It was early November. The skies were dim with hazy clouds and the streets were ugly with damp, torn fallen leaves as winter teased its way in. The seasonal shift felt like it was crawling, taking its sweet precious time to commit to the cold.
General Uranophane had been practically living in the Rift for the past three and a half years, and she heaved a heavy sigh as she appeared with an ozone-tinged snap! into the gray. The scenery around her was barely an improvement. And she'd only be relieved of the rage-filled sky and petrified decay and crawling presence of youma all around for a few minutes at most. All she was out here to do was grab her and her team some ******** coffee. They'd all quit using energy weeks ago.
So she walked into the nearest coffee shop. She didn't even power down. She stood in line, fully uniformed, with a wad of cash in her hand, and wearily smacked it on the counter while growling out her order.

“How are you holding up?” Michael asked as he leaned back against his chair in the coffee shop. It was a multifaceted question, he knew. Chris had a lot to deal with. His wife being a magical Princess, almost getting corrupted, his starseed being cracked in the process, losing his memories of the past few years so he didn’t even know he was going to be sitting across from him as the father of twin one-month-olds.
Michael was frustrated that his research on his Wonder turned up nothing useful. Nothing except an old fang.
If anything, meeting with his brother was just meant as a way to help ground him. He remembered his family, and everything as Valhalla, apparently.
Unfortunately, the answer would have to wait. Michael held up his hand to stop Chris from responding, nodding instead to the strangely dressed individual standing at the counter. In all honesty, it was a relief not to have to answer since he had no idea. He was there. He was alive. But everything still seemed so surreal. Even as he got used to things again, being told he’d graduated college and was contracted as a pitcher for Destiny City’s major league team was, well… incredibly strange.
Not as strange as the Negaverse officer, or lost cosplayer, in the coffee shop with them.
“They’re just getting coffee?” he whispered across to his brother, completely baffled by the sight. He watched as Michael stood from his seat and gestured to Chris to follow him. Chris took another quick drink from his cup before doing as he was prompted. It would be dangerous to try to cause a scene where others might see them power up, so it was in the alley behind the coffee shop, out of range of any CCTV cameras, that they found a place to power up into their Knight forms.

It was a complex order. Neptophane and Radonite in particular had exacting tastes that Uranophane found equal parts relatable and exasperating. She already warned them what would happen if they complained about their orders being even slightly wrong.
So she waited by the pickup counter, like any customer would, eating a croissant she decided to grab while she waited. Her power signature made it obvious that she was in fact of the Negaverse, but her actions were aggravatingly unsuspicious.
Then with a cup holder precariously loaded with five coffees in hand, her boots clipped to that same alleyway to teleport out.
And there were two Knights there. Looking at her.
She glared back.
Her exhausted scowl deepened further as she asked, sharply, "What?"

“You’re joking,” Sessrumnir was in the process of saying to Valhalla when the General turned the corner. His attention was immediately pulled from the beseeching gaze of his brother to the coffee laden Negaverse officer.
“That’s it? You just waltz into coffee shops in full uniform like it’s nothing?” he growled. There was no doubt in his mind that this individual was going to either try to attack them or teleport, like they always did. But the fact that they had the gall to pick up coffee like they were on the way to the office? It pissed Sessrumnir off to no end.
“Please, wait,” Valhalla tried insisting, making an attempt to at least put his arm out to stop Sessrumir from moving closer to whom he could only assume was a General. “Wait, we’re not going to fight you,” he tried saying, which was followed by an irritated scoff from Sessrumnir. “I’m looking for information on starseeds. Do you… have you ever heard of one being fixed after it was damaged?”
“This is a waste of time. Why would the Negaverse tell you if they knew?” Sessrumnir growled at his brother this time, but he never took his icy gaze off the General. “After what you said they did in the subway? And that was with Ganymede and Polaris there.”

Through gritted teeth, the General replied, "The Negaverse supports local businesses -" her eyebrows jumped and her head swaggered - "and tips generously. Where's the crime in that?"
In theory, this could have been a trap, part of a defamation campaign. But something in Uranophane's tone made that seem unlikely. It matched something in Sessrumnir's tone. Even with that strange, ambiguous sense of agreement hanging in the air, the situation remained tense as she listened to Valhalla's question. And she stood, with her armful of coffee, no weapon drawn, staring them down, for a long moment.
Sessrumnir was right. Uranophane had no obligation or reason to answer that question at all. She could have laughed Valhalla off with a snide remark and teleported away so she could still get to her meeting on time. But she stayed, she thought, and she answered.
"Sure, I have. I've heard of comrades betraying the Negaverse and becoming Knights like you." Her eyes narrowed, but there was a cool sense of resignation in them instead of the anger she'd meant to conjure. It would take her moment longer to realize that she had just revealed a lot more about herself than she'd intended to.
Damaged, corrupted... they were the same word here.
Part of her always knew that.

“I didn’t think the Negaverse actually pays its agents,” Sessrumnir scoffed. But the moment the officer said they had heard of starseeds being fixed, his eyes narrowed, trying to determine if they were just being played or if there was something more to the comment.
Betraying the Negaverse and becoming Knights… that was the definition of purification, but it wasn’t as simple as that. Valhalla also held out hope that there would be good information on how to fix his starseed, but instead his curiosity was drawn in a different direction. The officer of course had no obligation to answer him, or even answer truthfully, so their demeanor was confusing for a moment. Did they mean to say it like that? Other officers seemed to think that being in the Negaverse was creating a more perfect version of themselves, but…
“Do you know why the Negaverse was betrayed? Why anyone would want to become a Knight?” he asked cautiously. And then, despite his brother’s hissing at him to not, “My name is Valhalla. This is Sessrumnir.”

"You're a Knight, why don't you tell me?" Uranophane replied sarcastically. Suddenly, her hand jumped from her side --
-- and she pulled her soy latte up and took a long sip from it. It was perfectly prepared, but the taste and sensation of it amplified the empty feeling that crept along her nerves when she powered up. Caffeine paled in comparison to human energy. So, she frowned at it and returned the cup to the crammed cup holder, giving the ground a long stare.
Then she drew her weapon. It was pointed to her side, away from either of them, but the look on her face was a clear invitation.
She was going to be late, and needed a good reason.

He knew this would be a horrible idea. Even though he was sure Valhalla would protest, Sessrumnir swiped his thumb against the fang hanging from his belt, and a large ethereal canine swirled into being. Complete with drool dripping from snarling teeth.
“Wait!” Valhalla did indeed try to stall the possibly inevitable fight, holding his hands up between the General and Knight. “We were born to be knights. Our starseeds determined that. For Sessrumnir and myself, but there are others who carry the blood of their ancestors until the time is right,” he tried answering as quickly as possible, but it was a little distracting to have Sessrumnir’s wolf dog snapping its fangs in his ear.
"We don't want to fight. Put her away, Sess," he said to the General first, and then Sessrumnir.

"So you had no choice?"
Uranophane cracked a twisted smile as she paced a careful arc around the Knights, her boots clacking on the pavement. The wolf was surprising, but not too intimidating to her. She had to navigate around unpredictable youma every damn day.
"That's the draw of the Negaverse, you know. You choose it. You earn your power. And it's all for a good cause."
In a quick, practiced movement, she flipped the short sword in her hand and threw it towards the wolf.

“I didn’t say that! Of course we have a choice! Do you really have a choice with what you do in the Negaverse?” Valhalla tried saying while staying out of the way of the fight between Sessrumnir and the General.
Sessrumnir put her away as Valhalla suggested, but only so she could avoid the weapon hitting her. Instead, it hit the wisps of what was left of the summon as he recalled her. And now that the General was temporarily out of a weapon, although Sessrumnir knew it wouldn’t be for long, he lunged forward to throw a left hook at the General’s jaw.
“The only good cause the Negaverse believes in is the death and destruction of everyone who doesn’t agree with them,” he growled.

Uranophane attempted a dodge, but she got smacked pretty hard. The coffee got knocked out of her hand and spilled everywhere. She growled at that. Her form was not great right now. She was exhausted, distracted, and low on energy. Cautiously, she jumped back while summoning her weapon back to her hand -- a move that took more effort than it should have.
"You have no idea," she sneered at the Knights. So many of her lived experiences had come to mind immediately with Valhalla's retort, and Sessrumnir's words sharpened the focus. They were right. They were right. This time the blade flew at Valhalla, and she yelled, pointedly, "Why do you think I'm attacking you?"

Unlike Sessrumnir’s giant canine, Valhalla didn’t have the luxury of disappearing into ethereal smoke when a knife was thrown at him. His reflexes were already slowed from his low energy, so he was relieved when only his upper arm was hit with the blade.
Valhalla hissed from the pain, grateful that part of his shoulder armor deflected the heaviest brunt of the attack.
Now that the General no longer had the blade in hand, the wolf was summoned back, teeth snapping with the intention to restrain. Around a wrist or cloth of clothing or neck, it didn’t matter. Paws would be heavy enough to pin if the canine could get the General on the ground, but at the moment Sessrumnir was more concerned about Valhalla.
“Does it matter?” Sessrumnir growled, moving closer to Valhalla to yank at some of the fabric of his cape so he could use it to staunch the flow of blood. “It’s because you felt like it or were ordered. Either way, you decided to attack someone who had no intention of hurting you.”
“I’m fine,” Valhalla insisted, letting Sessrumnir take a look at his wound, before taking over the task of holding the cape against his arm. “We don't have any idea what it’s like,” he reminded Sessrumnir, his voice far from being aggressive or even angry. Just a little pained. “Don’t hurt them. Please."

"You're right."
Those words, directed at Sessrumnir, came from Uranophane after a long moment of silence. It had been a long, long, time since her weapon had struck another human, and seeing it happen after everything she'd learned and thought about made her feel... sick. Guilty. It didn't matter that she had honestly expected the Knight to dodge it. She'd still hurt somebody out of some egotistical, improvised plan to put on an act so she wouldn't get caught fraternizing with the enemy. She was still using these people for her own gain, just like the Negaverse had trained her to do.
The weapon was dismissed with another strained thought. And then, she said, surprising even herself: "I'm sorry."
It felt like too little, too late.

The only reason the wolf disappeared once more was to conserve her energy, and not because Valhalla asked him to not hurt this General. The damage had already been done, and now he would have to explain to Paris why he was bringing her husband back injured from their coffee outing.
He glared at the General, with no intention of falling for any tricks they might have up their sleeve. No matter how genuine the apology sounded, or the fact that the weapon had been dismissed. Unlike Valhalla, who was naive and had almost been corrupted because of it, Sessrumnir wasn’t going to let his guard down.
“It’s okay,” Valhalla said almost immediately, offering the General a small smile now that it seemed they weren’t interested in fighting any more. He glanced down at the wound and pulled the fabric away to take a peek. “It’s not that bad. Maybe a couple stitches if the butterfly bandages I have at home don’t hold. I’ve had worse,” he promised in the hopes that they didn’t feel too guilty.
He just ignored the way Sessrumnir rolled his eyes.
“I’m sorry about your coffee. Is there anything we can do to help you--”
“We are not helping them!”

She had just stabbed a man in the arm, and he was apologizing about the coffee, and he was offering help, as if such an act had been completely forgivable. It was in such stark contrast to what she'd come to expect from others. Charonite, Tanzanite, Beryl, Zinkenite... none of them would have been so gracious or compassionate. It was an opportunity she couldn't pass up, in spite of the circumstances. But she had to take a genuine risk and proceed with honesty.
"General Uranophane," she said. "That's my Negaverse name." The change in tone from just a minute ago was astounding, even to her. All the anger and bitterness had evaporated, and now she was talking to the Knights like they were simply other people. "No one on my team uses stolen energy anymore... so I was getting us coffee."
She spoke slowly, carefully, quietly. There weren't any other chaotic energy signatures around, and no people nearby, but that didn't mean there was no chance of being overheard and found out. "When I ran into you, I attacked... to keep my record good. I've gotten into trouble for insubordination before." It had been a few years ago, but it was still a permanent mark on her history. "So, if our cover gets blown..."
