“Is this a bad time, General King?” Jet asked after having politely knocked on the door to announce his presence, and since it was unlocked he let himself in. Based on previous interactions with the General King, Axinite seemed to appreciate not having to wait to respond and then go through the standard salutations. If Axinite didn’t want to be disturbed, he would have locked the door.
“I wanted to talk to you about the operation General Faustite led,” he explained. He didn’t bother wasting Axinite’s time by saying that he assumed Axinite had enough time to read his report on the incident. About how he’d responded to the call for reinforcements, only for General Benitoite to slay a civilian in broad daylight where there were other civilians and the enemy and allies to see.
He also didn’t bother wasting Axinite’s time by further explaining that he didn’t want to talk about the operation itself, but everything that transpired.

“Not a bad time at all, come in, General.” He gestured to the empty seat in front of him and assumed Jet knew the standard invitations well enough to know that any of the baked goods on his desk were his if he wanted them. “Can I get you some tea?” he asked, wanting to give the General ample time to settle in. And yet, even as he moved to refill his own cup, his eyes had drifted back to Jet expectantly, like he was anticipating unfavorable or disturbing news. He kept his standard polite smile, and had almost mastered a perfectly calm mask, but his eyes were sharp and inquisitive, like he thought he might be able to see what was on Jet’s mind if he looked hard enough.

He paused when he was offered the tea, not wanting to have Axinite get up and do more work than he already did, but he knew it would probably help them both. For Jet to calm down from his frustrations, and for Axinite to do something.
“Yes, please,” he said after a moment, because he didn’t want to leave Axinite waiting. It had been years now since Axinite was transferred to Destiny City with the others, but Jet had always looked up to him more. He didn’t seem… fake. Not like the others did, who were busy furthering their own goals, be it the school or. Whatever the General Queen did. But even if Axinite didn’t really care, he put up a good illusion.
“Sir? What is our stance on involving civilians?” he asked, unable to stop himself from just jumping into things. “General Faustite called for backup for his operation, and I responded of course. But once I arrived, General Benitoite thought it was a good idea to kill a civilian in broad daylight with his weapon. I just don’t feel like it is, well… good for our reputation. Obviously we do whatever necessary to get rid of the White Moon, but there was no guarantee that the civilian that was killed wasn’t one of our own. I guess I just want to make sure I’m not overreacting. I, um… tried to relieve him of his position in the operation. I didn’t feel like he was able to continue without making everything worse. In case. You get a complaint later,” he added and hung his head a little because the last thing he wanted to do was make Axinite’s life more difficult.

Axinite did seem to take satisfaction in having something to do; he pushed himself back from his chair to get the tea but never seemed like he wasn’t listening. He poured two cups as Jet spoke, and though his brows had furrowed it wasn’t as if any of that was directed towards the General across from him. He didn’t speak until he’d passed one cup over to Jet and taken his seat again. He held his cup between his hands contemplatively but his attention was completely on Jet. A frown had settled on his face and it took him only a second to answer. “I think any needless loss of life is wasteful. Civilians aren’t pawns to be thrown around, they’re not pigs to bleed. I would think someone of Benitoite’s reputation and experience wouldn’t slaughter without a good purpose.” He sounded hopeful on the matter, but he obviously trusted Jet’s observation and concern. “I have drained them, but only so much as they can handle. I’ve pulled starseeds, but only from undesirables, the scum of the Earth. The mistakes that bring the rest of us down. But killing pointlessly, no. That’s just murder. This is a war,” he explained. “Sometimes, soldiers die.” A truth he bore close to his heart. “Our enemies know what they signed up for to oppose us. But civilians are innocent until proven otherwise. I thought discretion was established to be important in that mission, am I wrong? A public assassination would draw unwanted attention. And wasn’t a mission goal, if I understand correctly.”

Jet took the cup that was passed to him and held it like Axinite did. He frowned into it, and tried to lift it to his lips to sip at, but he was still unhappy and wished there was a better solution than just turning his back on what happened.
“From what I was told, discretion was supposed to be the goal, but. I’m afraid that things like this will just continue to happen. I’m tired of people looking at us like we’re all cold blooded killers. They don’t realize the danger the world faces, and that we need to do something to ensure its survival.”
He took a deep breath and let it out. He knew he was just saying everything Axinite already knew, but it helped a little to get the thoughts off his chest. He trusted Axinite. And he hoped he wouldn’t judge him too harshly.
“My brother died for this,” he said almost suddenly. He didn’t talk about it to anyone. No one other than those directly involved even knew. “He was the only family I had. He was a Captain and… and he could have teleported away to save himself but. I was there. And Lovely. And Jericho. I was only fourteen, sir. I knew then that I wanted to avenge his death, and carry on whatever it was he thought was so important. I just-- I feel like people have become complacent or arrogant. And-- I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m telling you all this.”

Axinite’s eyes snapped up when Jet spoke of his brother; his cup remained untouched. He was silent for only a few seconds before he answered, “Because it’s important.” Why else would it be on Jet’s mind now if it weren’t? “I’m sorry for your loss,” he said, and it was more than just a sympathetic line. He was sorry that Jet lost his brother. He meant it. “You’re right. I think it is very likely that people have forgotten what our purpose is. It sounds like your brother died a hero. You shouldn’t have had to lose him.” He exhaled and looked into the cup on his desk for a few seconds. “We have to remind people that we’re fighting for everyone. The goal has never been to slaughter. Enemies, maybe. But civilians? No. Reckless murder is as much a danger to us as everyone else. And, it’s inhumane. That’s not what we are. That’s not what we do.”

He missed his brother, whom he’d known better than even their parents. Even though they’d been stuck in foster care, Sorin did his best to take care of Ilian. They were going to have a good life together, until that Senshi ruined everything by killing him.
“Thank you, sir,” he said quietly, because while he had gone to Axinite to try and understand and maybe feel a little validated for his thoughts, he also didn’t want to cause too much trouble for Axinite, who likely had to clean everything up anyway.
“I hope something like this doesn’t happen again, but…” he shrugged, and then lifted the tea to sip at, and then took a quick gulp when it wasn’t too hot. “I’m sorry if any of my, um, enthusiasm causes you problems. I can try to tone it down if you get too many complaints.” Because he wouldn’t have been surprised if Benitoite decided to complain that Jet tried taking him off the mission.

“No,” Axinite said firmly, but there was something gentle about it too. “Don’t apologize for that. If you think something needs to be said, please say it. I don’t want you to ever hold back. I don’t think of them as complaints, I see them as concerns. They’re flaws in our system and things we need to improve. I know it can’t always be easy to have to come in here with bad news. And, I hope very much that in the future you’ll be able to march into my office for something good. But,” he smiled, even if it was a bit sad. He wasn’t going to hold his breath. “You know I’m here for anything. The good, and the bad. I’m going to look into what we can do to improve missions. If officers can’t be trusted with their power, we’ll put them through extra training. Or, if need be, demote them until they prove they can be trusted.” Which, he hoped it didn’t come to, but he was adamant that the Negaverse needed to succeed. They weren’t going to get far if they were self-sabotaging--deliberately or accidentally.

Jet couldn’t help but relax a little at Axinite’s words. They were reassuring at least. He didn’t want to be a bother, but he also wanted to see the Negaverse thrive instead of stagnate. He nodded appreciatively, also hoping that he could march into Axinite’s office for something good one day.
“Thank you, sir. It really means a lot that you’d take the time to listen to me today,” he said, his voice sincere. He could trust Axinite, he knew this. It was why he went to him in the first place. “I’ll help as well. I’ll make sure we do whatever necessary to avoid things like this again,” he promised and then lifted the cup of tea to drink the rest, not wanting it to go to waste, and because he really did appreciate Axinite’s hospitality.
Maybe next time he would have better news. For now, he was just grateful, and relieved, to have someone to listen to him, even if things didn’t change as quickly as he wanted them to. He would just have to do what he could to help.
