Cybele had never gone back to Negaspace. She'd considered it, briefly, once or twice more, but as time passed, it seemed less and less likely that her 'allies' would be happy to see her. At least nobody had come after her yet, although she was not she was not sure if that was a good sign or a bad one.

During the day, she moved her campsite from location to location at the edge of the forest. She lived on granola bars and whatever little things she could snare without attracting the attention of some kind of law enforcement. She was distinctly aware that she was technically not welcome here, either, but she left a small enough footprint that nobody seemed to mind.

At night, she powered up and went into the city.

When she felt Chaos auras, the temptation to crawl back came up again, but she pushed it down. The Negaverse was no place for her. She could see that now.

It was possible that Order would not want her, either, that there was no place at all for her.

Still, she gave the Chaos auras a wide berth. She avoided most of the Order auras, too, if they were not bright enough. If someone was new and still confused about things themselves, there was no way that they would be able to help her.

This meant that for a long time, Cybele came up empty handed and returned to the forest alone.

When she finally did pick up the intensity of an Eternal aura, she hesitated. Talking to the enemy would cement her as a traitor, and while in theory she was fine with that, it was still a big step. She walked forwards slowly, and her voice was soft when she called out, "Hello?"

“Cybele?”

Ganymede had not gone out that night with the intention of finding her. While it was true that, ever since the incident downtown, Ganymede checked on every powerful Corrupt aura that flared to life on her radar, hoping that it might be Cybele, she knew better than to expect it. She had no idea where Cybele had gone, whether she would be punished for what the Negaverse might see as a weakness, or captured if she tried to leave.

But the hope, always present, remained difficult to suppress.

When Ganymede heard Cybele’s voice in the night, she could only sigh in relief.

“It’s me,” she said, drawing closer, but coming to a stop before she could invade Cybele’s personal space, holding her hands up in what she hoped was a placating fashion. “Are you alright? Have you been hurt?”

Benitoite’s threats still rang in her mind. Ganymede knew better than to dismiss them.

When the other senshi came into view, Cybele’s breath caught in her chest.

She’d hoped she’d be able to find someone to get her in touch with the Princess, but she hadn’t dared think that she would find Ganymede directly.

“It’s you,” whispered Cybele. There was still some tension in the way that she carried herself, but her voice was softer than before. Even now, the kindness in Ganymede’s voice remained, and that was enough to make the emotions rise in Cybele’s throat again.

She tried to breathe through them, at least enough so that she could speak.

“I’m not hurt. Not yet,” she said, turning her arm to show that the burn from the battle had healed. If Ganymede looked closely, she would see the exhaustion in her eyes, and that she was possibly a bit thinner, but that was all.

“Although if they find me, that will likely change,” she said, smiling without warmth. “I didn’t go back after- after everything. I’ve been hiding.”

She took another deep breath and glanced to the ground. “But I don’t know that I’ve been all right at all.”

That the Negaverse hadn’t found her already must be some sort of miracle. Ganymede knew they had their ways; with some effort, they could hunt Cybele down easily enough. Perhaps they would lure her back, tempt her with darkness and power and all manner of seductive things. Perhaps they would threaten her, use what information they’d gained to force her into compliance. Or perhaps they would simply dispose of her, deem her unfit for duty and be done with it, and add her starseed to their collection.

Ganymede was not willing to accept any of those options — not as long as she had the power to help.

For now, Cybele was alive, and relatively uninjured, if a little tired and thin.

“What can I do?” Ganymede asked, nearly as calm as she’d been at the incident downtown, but with an edge of concern in her voice, of caution, because Cybele was in danger out here.

She was in danger everywhere.

“If you want to leave the Negaverse, I can power up and summon my crystal right now,” she offered, “but if you’re not ready, if you haven’t made up your mind, if you still need time, tell me what would help you, and I’ll whatever I can.”

"I think I have to leave the Negaverse if I want to survive," said Cybele, her voice flat, her eyes not leaving the ground. "Not just because of him. It's possible I could still crawl back and apologize, but-"

She trailed off, taking a shaky breath through the nose. It was one thing to roll the thoughts around in her head for a week and quite another to lay them out in front of someone else, even someone who seemingly wanted to help.

"In the battle, the one you called the invasion," she said slowly, "I might have sacrificed myself if it came to that, but I was fighting for my own life, too. I wanted to live." She exhaled, shaking her head at the path below her feet.

"I've never felt that since I woke up with a hand in my chest."

There was a reason she'd come out of her hiding spot to attack a Princess and an Eternal before her backup had arrived. There was a reason she'd made similar reckless decisions throughout her time in the Negaverse.

She spoke quickly, not wanting to let that hang in the air too long.

"Just," she looked up, finally meeting Ganymede's gaze. "I don't know how the process works. I don't know if I'm more worried about having my memories healed and remembering things I can't go back to, or having it go the other way and starting with nothing again."

She was still as she tried to read the other's face. "Have you even seen enough people in my situation to know what would happen?"

With complete honesty, Ganymede said, “No. I can’t guarantee what would happen to you.”

She only had a handful of purifications under her belt, and two of that number were rescues from incomplete corruptions. She did not have enough experience or enough information to make any sort of factual claim about Cybele’s situation. The only circumstance she had to compare it to was Cyllene, but Cybele and Cyllene were different people with different identities, different thoughts and emotions, different opinions, different starseeds. The results could be similar, or distinct from one another.

“There’s no way to know until the purification is complete,” she explained. “You might only lose some of your memories. You might lose everything. You might remember things from your life before this, you might not. I don’t know. Purification is healing, but healing can be difficult.”

Ganymede could not blame Cybele for having doubts. There were too many unknowns. It was often easier and safer to remain on a path that offered some sort of familiarity, hollow as it might be.

That Cybele was considering it at all fueled the fire of hope in Ganymede’s heart.

“But no matter what happens, you will have my help,” she said. “You will have the help of everyone who supports me. My family. My friends. My allies. You won’t have to hide anymore. You can live how you want, fight how you want, sacrifice what you’re willing to sacrifice and protect what you want to protect.”

Hesitantly, worried that her next statement might backfire on her, Ganymede continued, “The last time we saw one another before your corruption, we spoke of worlds beyond this city. You told me at the time that you didn’t want your asteroid to become more important to you than Destiny City, and I respect that wholeheartedly. Destiny City is our home. But the part of me that's grown attached to Ganymede, that remembers things beyond this life, likes to think that the forests and the purple skies of Cybele are waiting for you.”

An asteroid?

Cybele's eyes widened. Sylvite had mentioned something about dead other worlds in her explanation about what the Negaverse was fighting for, but it had been the least of her worries at the time.

Now, even though she couldn't truly remember, the thought of purple skies tugged at her heart.

"It sounds beautiful," she whispered, eyes flicking skyward.

Then she went quiet for another moment, folding her hands in front of her chest.

"I might need a lot of support no matter which way the memories go," she said. "I wasn't bluffing the other day. There are people in the Negaverse who have some morality left. I did the work they did not want to do. I stopped counting the starseeds."

Her voice was flat, her gaze barely apologetic as she met the gaze of the other woman, still half waiting for her to turn on her.

"I did not mind. It still does not bother me, although I'm beginning to realize that it should. I don't know what it's going to be like if I start feeling again." She paused, her lips pressing thinner. "I don't think I want to find out alone.

"But," she attempted a smile, "I'd like to return the favor, I think. I'd like to stand by your side in battle, or when you reach out to the next person," she hesitated, as if this was the hardest to say, "Or perhaps in line at an ice cream truck, or next to a pool?"

The mundane things were the most foreign to her. She was used to having youma in her kitchen sink, not to going swimming, but she thought that she wanted to try.

"I know I can never have a family," she said, and after everything else, that was where her voice cracked, "But I think I'd like to be your friend."

Years ago, the thought of any of her allies committing the sort of atrocities the Negaverse engaged in would have angered her, would have set her off on some self-righteous tangent about good and evil. At the very least, she would have been disappointed, perhaps tried to sway them from that violence.

But she’d learned over the years that some things could not be avoided. In Cybele’s case, she’d been doing what was expected of her, taking starseeds whenever opportunity allowed. That she was not bothered by it was no great surprise. This was war, fantastical as it always seemed. War was darkness and brutality, no matter where or how it took place.

Even if it had bothered Cybele, the Chaos might have compelled her to do it anyway. Perhaps it was better that she didn’t mind. Guilt could be a terrible burden.

“You can have a family,” Ganymede assured her. “Friends can be a family, regardless of blood. You won’t be alone, Cybele.”

Ganymede offered a smile in return, small and tentative, overjoyed to reach this moment, but cautious still.

“It will be an honor to fight by your side again,” she continued, “and it will be my privilege to help you acclimate to a new life. Whatever that life becomes. I’ll do whatever I can to help you thrive.”

Life, in spite of all the evil in the world, could be so beautiful.

Stepping forward, Ganymede offered her hand, then paused, thinking the gesture too formal. She smiled again, encouraging, and held her arms just open enough to offer a hug, if Cybele would accept one.

“I’ll always fight for you.”

Her full confession was out, hanging in the air between them. Cybele had said what she'd done, still half expecting to end up shunned for it, but on top of that, for the first time that she could remember, Cybele had let herself say what she wanted.

Ganymede still didn't attack, or even shoo her back to the forest. Ganymede opened her arms.

Cybele stood, staring, for an awkward second. The tears welled in her eyes again at the thought of not being alone.

She had not hugged anyone in at least eight months. There had been that time in the mist monster's prison that she and Rakovanite had slept against each other for warmth, but that had been a matter of necessity and nothing more.

Cybele wanted more, she decided.

It was slowly and cautiously that Cybele stepped forwards and wrapped her arms around her friend. The tears fell faster then, hitting Ganymede's shoulder as Cybele pressed against it, but she did not even think to apologize. "Thank you," she whispered instead, some of the tension from the last few days finally melting from her back. "Thank you."

She stayed there for a long moment, lingering in the warmth of human contact, but eventually, she pulled away again.

"Do you have that phone?" she asked, wiping her eyes with the back of her knuckles. "If I," she swallowed, "If I might forget, there's somebody else I'd like to try to talk to before we do it. Alya. Another senshi. I'm not sure if I would be here if he hadn't been kind to me, as well."

They could not hesitate with things if he wasn't around, but it seemed worth trying.

Ganymede held her, not so tight as to be suffocating, but enough to convey her support, to bear some of the heavy weight that came with loneliness and fear. Eyes welling, Ganymede allowed herself time to revel in relief. Stubbornly, she held back the tears. This was Cybele’s moment, not hers.

When Cybele stepped back again, Ganymede released her slowly, keeping her hands on Cybele’s shoulders long enough to ensure that Cybele had recovered.

“I do,” she said, summoning her phone upon request. “I’m not sure I’ve ever met an Alya before, but it shouldn’t be too hard to get a message to him.”

Ganymede was unsurprised to see that Alya was not in her contacts. She patrolled less than she used to, and met less people than she used to as a result. These days, most of her contacts were allies from over half a decade ago, many of whom she hadn’t seen in years.

But the connections app proved beneficial. She found Alya’s profile, skimmed it quickly, and attempted to get in touch. If she had to leave a message then she’d leave a message, but for Cybele’s sake, she hoped for a more expedient outcome.

“Hi, Alya, my name’s Ganymede. Sorry to get all stalkery and hunt you down through the app, but I’m here with Cybele and she’d like to talk, if possible. It looks like we’ve got a purification on our hands.” She paused, eyes on Cybele again, and asked, "Did you want him here? I can text our location. Or..." She offered Cybele her phone.

Cybele was stable enough, once standing on her own feet again. While Ganymede got the phone out and seemed to be scrolling through some kind of app, Cybele stepped back, took a few deep breaths, and wiped at her eyes some more.

The first difficult part, the decision, was done.

It was just logistics, from here, and Ganymede was already helping her out the way that she'd promised to.

The strange warmth rose in her chest again, and the tears threatened to keep flowing, but Cybele was able to hold them back at this point. She watched as the phone rang with a mostly blank expression, although her brows knit and her gaze dropped to the ground again when Ganymede tried to offer her the phone.

"I'm not sure if I can say it all over a voicemail," she said quickly, her still-shaky voice carrying to the microphone. She pressed her lips together and took a shaky breath, the emotions threatening again. "I'll try if I have to. I know we shouldn't wait on this, but," she paused, and then nodded slowly.

"Can you tell him where we are?"

Alya was not always the most diligent Senshi, and his penchant for self preservation meant that he didn’t really like to patrol alone, or anywhere that might get him into a fight.

It might have been a fluke that he was powered up tonight, or it might have been fate. There had never been any urgency when it came to answering his phone before, and it was absentmindedly that he drew it out at all.

There was a call from someone he didn’t know, which was strange in itself, but not so much that he was in any way alarmed--until he heard what she was saying. Until he heard Cybele.

“--Cybele?” he blurted, because certainly Ganymede was important for connecting them, but he’d had Cybele on his mind for so long that it felt like this was either a joke or a dream. He pressed his phone tightly to his face, like he was afraid of missing something if he didn’t. “Yes, tell me where you are. I’m out right now, but if you give me a few minutes, I can be anywhere. I’ve been worried sick.”

Ganymede had said purification. He’d heard enough of Cybele’s softer voice to know that she’d seemed to want him to know where they were--and he wanted to be there, badly.

Now.

“We can wait a few minutes,” Ganymede agreed. “I’ll text the location.”

So far, no other Chaos auras were popping up on her radar. They had time. Not much, but enough.

Ganymede sent the relevant information, street names and landmarks that would help Alya arrive quickly. While they waited, she sent a few brief messages of warning, one to Valhalla, one to Sessrumnir, one to Oberon, letting each of them know where she was, and that she would be powering up to Princess soon, so they could monitor the area and intervene if her aura attracted the wrong sort of attention.

No sooner had she finished than another aura nudged at her sixth sense — an Eternal she assumed was Alya.

“Before we do this,” Ganymede said, eyes on Cybele while Alya drew closer, “I wanted to ask who did this to you.”

She spoke softly, kindly, as comforting as she could be. “At the battle downtown, you said you were chosen, and when we talked before, you referred to this as something that was done to you, which leads me to believe corruption was forced on you.”

Which was worse, she often wondered, to willingly embrace the darkness or to have no choice in the matter? The latter seemed more violent. Painful.

“Do you remember any of it?” she asked. “When it happened, or how? The more we know, the better we can protect you, and the more luck we’ll have preventing it from happening to someone else.”

Cybele had not completely softened, even at Ganymede's embrace or the sound of Alya's voice over the phone, but she felt secure enough about the situation to turn her back to Ganymede while she sent out a few more texts. She needed to keep an eye on her surroundings. It was a habit she'd picked up over the last week while she'd been half-waiting for one trap or another to spring.

The question had her whirling back around, staring at Ganymede with the same intense, indecisive gaze that she'd worn in their previous encounters.

"Sylvite," she said after a moment.

Traitor, said a voice in the back of her head, although it was a voice that was possible to push past.

Sylvite gave empty compliments and always expected things in return. The Negaverse claimed to have saved her, but what they had done to her had happened against her will.

On the other hand, Alya must have dropped everything to come and be there for her. She could feel his aura drawing closer and closer, already. Ganymede was working tirelessly to ensure her safety, even though her dress was still black. They'd both offered her kindness on the field of battle, when they would have had every right to turn against her. They'd both asked what she wanted.

It was clear, now, who her friends were. It was clear who her friends had always been.

"I don't remember any of it, but I've heard the story from a few sources," she said, her tone even again, although her voice was quiet. "I was running a training event at the end of last summer. It was ambushed. Sylvite was targeting me, all though I'm not sure why." It was one of those times where she felt like something might have happened, but it was lost at the edge of her memories.

"She was the one leading the attack, and I woke up with her hand in my chest. General-King Axinite gave her the power for the corruption."

Cybele might have said more, but her train of thought was cut off by the Order aura growing very close. She glanced over her shoulder once more, this time looking for the other Eternal.

What Alya wouldn’t have given for one of Cybele’s arrows, to be just a little faster. Maybe he looked a little crazy, running through town as he followed Ganymede’s instructions until he was able to pinpoint the energy signatures he thought must have been them.

Alya was incredibly vain, and cared very much what everyone else thought of him.

Except for right now.

All he could think about was making sure Cybele was alright, about making sure that she had everything she needed, that she was okay.

He wasn’t going to waste time for someone to find out she was talking about purification. He wasn’t going to risk her teleporting out and giving up, or changing her mind, or any number of horrible things that could happen.

So, naturally, he’d hurried.

The sight of Cybele and a White Moon Senshi meant he was in the right place, and he wasn’t too late, but he didn’t breathe a sigh of relief until he was there next to them.

He smiled at Cybele, hopeful and worried, and wanted to throw his arms around her.

...But, he didn’t. He didn’t want to crowd her, didn’t want to scare her.

“I’m sorry, I came as fast as I could. Thank you,” he said, looking between the two of them. “For letting me know. Hi, nice to meet you,” he said, waving to Ganymede briefly before returning his attention to Cybele. “Are you okay, do you need anything?”
