Summer was drawing closer and closer and the different villages around Tendaji were beginning to plan their summer festivals. It was a tradition in Tendaji - to celebrate the Gods every year in the summer when spirits were high and food was at its most abundant.

All the races had their own gods to celebrate, whatever those might have been, and every person had their own feelings one way or the other.

[ What did they mean to you? With the summer fast approaching, it must be somewhere (no matter how small) on everyone’s thoughts. And what are your thoughts on the other culture’s gods? ]

Since coming to Matori Sol was being exposed to a variety of new situations, some more comfortable than others.

The first being his looser fitting clothing to account for the warm, breezy sea air that seemed to permeate even the mainland cities. It felt uncomfortable against his skin; almost as if he were too exposed, but he supposed that was only natural given his colder lifestyle.

Beyond that the biggest change had been adjusting to Koril's family. For the most part they were extremely welcoming and seemed to be understanding of his disability. Anytime he needed assistance someone was there and that was the perk of having a larger family he supposed. Still, there was one person he hadn't managed to connect with and despite Sol's antisocial tendencies he'd really rather change that; if other reason than for Koril's sake.

It's why he'd gone out of his comfort zone and asked Dexurn if he would accompany him that morning. It had been such an abrupt question that he worried the older man would say he had plans, but...here they were. While Sol couldn't see his surroundings the sounds of a village preparing for a festival was plain enough. It wouldn't be in full swing for a few days, but some stalls were open which is what he'd been hoping for.

After all, where better to buy what he'd come for than the festival of Hatald?

The festivals made for having fun outside of the house, giving kids somewhere else to burn off their endless energy, and a break from the daily work grind. He had thought he would have been busy this festival as well with the twins, but they had gone off with some friends just like their older siblings. Even Koril was strangely absent that day, leaving him to face one on one time with Sol. While not upset, he was certainly more bashful than usual.

Though, Sol probably wouldn't be able to tell much difference from the last few days.

"It's good to come early if you're looking for something nice to buy," he managed to observe. "All the quality crafts and gifts and things tend to get put out before the games and wilder entertainments bring the kids around." He smiled fondly. "Course, I didn't learn that until right before Olly and Ari got here. The others were old enough and wanted to go with friends, so Shadiya and I were able to see these early stalls finally."

Without Koril by his side Sol seemingly relied on his walking stick to guide him. In reality it was a combination of his stick, magic sense, and his antennae. The stick kept him from hitting objects that carried no aura, and the probing magic helped him to identity living creatures that surrounded him. It helped him to keep Dexurn relatively close, which meant that he hoped the man wouldn't purposefully lead him into a building.

"That's what I was hoping for. Even before I lost my sight I wasn't a fan of crowds." Even as a child it seemed unbearably overwhelming. Maybe when he was really young it was okay, but after his father's kidnapping it all just seemed excessive.

Hearing Dexurn talk so fondly about his family just brought a little smile to Sol's face. He tilted his head downward in the direction of the shorter man and spoke, "I'm sorry, I really should have thought before asking you come today. Hopefully you'll be able to come back before the festivals over and spend some time with Shadiya. Koril, Kyril and I could watch over the younger ones so you two can spend some time together if you'd like." Really, from the way those two fawned over each other it might be nice to have some alone time without the kids around. He had no doubt that they loved their children dearly, but some time as a couple was needed from time to time too.

"I can't say I like crowds, but I'm pretty much used to them by now." That, and having gotten closure from the past of his life made crowds more bearable. So many years had passed since then. There was so much that a crowd could hide and bring instinctive fears to rise, but old demons were not one of the hidden threats for Dex any longer.

His brow rose curiously with Sol's apology. "It's fine, really. There's plenty of time to spend with them the rest of this week. The kids will make sure that we come back at least a few times." He couldn't help a rueful snort. "Besides, they're getting too old to have me following them around; aside for the twins. I was free, so I'm happy to come." He took a closer look at one of the stalls and chuckled lightly. "I can pick out a gift for Shadiya and surprise her while we're here, too. Usually there's a kid or three tagging along, and they can't resist spoiling it."

"Ah, well, that's sort of why I'm glad we're alone today." The teenagers might have been easier to bribe into silence, but those boys...Sol didn't trust them to keep quiet. "There's something I wanted to talk to you about and I didn't want anyone else around."

Sol side stepped a passing body just to brush against a nearby stall. His already flustered senses caused his spine to stiffen a little, but after a brief, yet sincere, apology he kept walking. "Koril is very important to me and I love him very much. After we'd parted ways the first time I realized that I never wanted that to happen again and I've been thinking about this for a while, but...It didn't feel right to do it before talking to you."

Sol paused his steps and turned to Dexurn. There was a nervousness about the alkidike hybrid that caused his palms to sweat. "...If it's alright with you, I'd like to ask your son to marry me."

A private subject? For whatever reason, Dex's first instinct was to tense up as though he were about to be berated. Had he done something to upset the lad that couldn't be brought up in front of the others? That would go over so well; all he needed to do was piss off his son's boyfriend! What in the heavens..?

Sol's expressive admissions caught Dex by surprise, but he couldn't help relaxing a bit and smiling. A father's heart swelled when he realized that his children were finding love. It didn't even sound superficial. To find love like he had with Shade... that was one of his biggest dreams for his children. A suspicion cropped up in the back of his head, but that was something people only did in stories.

He stopped in his tracks, brow rising with interest. "You're.. asking me?" He couldn't help asking in return. He raised his hand to rub at his neck, watching Sol for a long moment. Okay, maybe it wasn't just stories. Perhaps his children were able to find love even more storybook than his own! He shifted on his feet, knowing that he needed to keep it as simple as possible. "I don't know you very well.. but my son does. Sol, I can tell you with complete certainty that I've never seen Koril as content with his life as he is now, and I know you're a big part of that. From what I can tell.. I think it'd be a good idea if you did ask him."

"Is that...not what I'm supposed to do?" Now Sol was even more nervous than before. Neither one of his fathers' had to worry about asking the family of the other because...well, there was none. Still, Sol had seen several proposals over the course of village life and it always started out with asking the intended's parents. There wasn't much he could do to show Dexurn that he was a good candidate, and there was so much riding on the impression he'd made over the last little bit that Sol couldn't help worrying. He was already a mess of a hybrid, blind, and a healer without much gold to speak of.

Hatald help me.

Without being able to see Dexurn's face Sol was relying entirely on the tone of his voice. There was an uncertainty there that caused his antennae to flatten a bit and his blood to thrum. But then....hope. "...Seriously? I've got your blessing?" He couldn't help it; there was an awkwardness to it, but Sol's uncertain grimace shifted into an almost elated smile. "...Would you...In all honesty there were two reasons I asked you to come here. To ask you and also to see if you...would help me pick out a ring."

Dex smiled bashfully with a shake of his head. "It's not that you're not supposed to, I just.. I guess I never paid much attention to how proposals are supposed to go. Didn't see them growing up aside from planned ones, and I didn't have anyone to ask after for Shadiya. ..I probably wouldn't have known to even if there had been."

Blessing? That's what asking was about? That was.. really sweet. His chuckle warmed happily. "Yes, you have it." A father's blessing to wed. That had a nice ring to it. Storybook, indeed.

And speaking of rings! "I'd be glad to help." Since he only ever wanted to best for his wife, he had done his research when it came to jewelry. He was pleased that it would come in handy for something so important for one of his kids. "It's been a while since I've done any shopping for Koril though. Any idea what he might like?"

Sol flexed his fingers atop his walking stick with a little more of a relaxed smile. "I guess I just wanted to make the best impression I could. He loves you all so much that I didn't want to risk causing any issues." If they hadn't welcomed him then what would he have done? Fight for his right to be there, obviously, but at what point would he pull away just so Koril wouldn't have had to choose between love and family? Thankfully that wasn't the case, but it had been a worry.

That chuckle, though...it helped to ease his nerves.

"I was thinking of something a little on the simpler side? Cost isn't the issue, but I was thinking of practicality. We've been traveling and he's got his work with the animals so anything too big would just get in the way."

After a brief hesitation, Dex slowly reached out to give Sol's arm an encouraging pat. "It's the very best impression so far, I promise." Family was number one in his mind and heart, and to hear the concern for Koril's wellbeing was just one more notch in Sol's favor. "It makes me wish I had a family ring for you to use," he found himself murmuring wistfully. His cheeks flared warm and he waved his hand. "Sorry. It's something from a book Shade once read to me. You'll want a fresh ring for this fresh life, right?" Simple made sense. Koril would feel terrible if a fancy ring got tangled into someone's fur or something choked on a loose stone. "Maybe something with an engraving? Then it can be personalized without sticking out."

Sol simply waved off the concern. "I don't think a family ring would have done either of us any good. There hasn't been one on my side of the family either and even if there was I would prefer something that fit Koril." Anything that either of his families had touched would have been tainted and that just wouldn't do.

An engraving? "That could work." If he had something put on the inside of the ring then it could be something special between the two of them; something only Koril, and now Dexurn, would see. "I hate to ask, but can you keep this a secret? I don't want to risk him finding out before the time is right."
PostPosted: Fri Jul 09, 2021 9:40 pm

Dex nodded lightly. As sweet as a family ring could be, he knew a fresh ring could be just as special. Yet, with the mention of the ring needing to fit, he couldn't help a laugh rising. "Even if it doesn't completely fit, the intent behind it will make it precious. The ring I proposed to Shadiya with literally didn't fit the proper finger, but she's still here with me." Was he talking about himself too much? Damn these social nerves!

Still, he grinned and automatically put a finger over his own lips. "I promise no one will hear a word of it from me. I'm not skilled at much, but I know how to keep a secret." He started leading the way toward one of the more reputable ring makers he knew, smile growing playfully. "Besides, it's not often I know something before my wife does. It's a nice change."

While Sol had meant 'fit' as in Koril's personality and not the actual size he smiled never the less. It was a bonding moment with his father, one that Sol hadn't actually assumed would happen, so he didn't want to ruin it. He'd never had great expectations that things would go well with Koril's family; all he'd wanted was for them not to go bad.

"Hopefully you won't get into too much trouble over it." Sol smirked. Or maybe that's what he wanted? "We'll have to come up with a cover story to explain why we've been gone. Maybe we can pick up something for lunch or run some errands if you have any?"
PostPosted: Mon Jul 19, 2021 7:44 pm

"Oh, I'll get a look but she'll be too busy being happy for you two." Dex smiled lightly. He could just imagine how excited Shade would be. Despite the nerves that came with Sol's initial arrival, he now found himself watching the hybrid with a warm and pleased expression as though it had been much more than a week's time. The love he was witnessing was a joy with all the uncertainty that came with having a child live far from home. He could find comfort with the growing reassurance that Sol and Koril would be able to watch out for each other.

A cover story? The intrigue!! "We'll think of something," he assured with a chuckle.
