The thought of leaving for Zena was surprisingly difficult. It meant leaving behind the life that she had fought tooth and nail to build for herself. It was only temporary, but, deep inside, it reminded her of the last home she had left- no, been torn from, and had never seen again.

This time, it was her choice. If one could call it a choice, really. She had to go back to Zena. She had to find out if her mother was okay, and if her old friend was alive...

"May the gods watch over you," her friends had said when she left. The gods.... Her gods were different from those who lived in Oba. Would they hear the pleas of those who did not pray to them? Besides that, she had little doubt that the gods of her Oban heritage gave her no consideration. The gods were as bad as the rich lords and ladies in her opinion. Eyes rising up, forgetting herself in the path, she snorted and shook her head. "You just keep on paying me no mind up there. I'll have none of it from you on my way."

Walking the streets as a newly engaged woman was something that Sariza was still adjusting too. her tutors had encouraged her to seek out Faisal to spend time at the festival getting to know her intended better, but instead she'd avoided the upper rings of the city entirely. She'd gone out to the common areas with far less pomp in her dress than her station allowed just to breath for a moment.

Mari's little paws thumped along the well worn path infront of them. Every other step was met with a snort and a subsequent lick of his snout. As cute as he could be on any given day the canine had a concerning wheeze to his breath that she'd been assured was normal for his kind, but she still didn't like to push him. So, when he inevitably got tired, she would gladly carry him.

Granted, that didn't stop him from sticking his drippy little nose where it didn't belong! He kept going up to strangers and snorting at them, wheezing excitement when some stooped to pet him before taking another look at her serious face. When he spotted Aaricia Mari went straight for her leg and looked up expectantly after making what could only be described as a gremlin's gurgle at her.

The trip ahead was a daunting task. After all, she'd never made such a journey alone! Besides the journey itself, the anticipation of finding out what was at the end was nerve-wracking. Would she last until then?

A damp touch to her leg brought her to a halt, head snapping down to look at what had touched her. When her eyes fell on the furry little beast, one hand flew to her chest before she stood frozen in place in shock. What... what was that? "Well... hello," she started slowly, eyes finally lifting to see if someone was going to lay claim on the creature. "I've never seen anything like you before."

"Mari!" Sariza had lost track of him for one moment and he was already causing trouble. The duruf himself looked pleased as punch to be getting some sort of attention and instead of going back to his mistress, who was clearly making her way closer, chose to drop a glob of slopping on top of Aaricia's foot.

"Forgive him, he's...ill." Even from the way she said it as Sariza bent to scoop the creature into her arms was filled with a sarcastic disdain. She lifted a sash from around her waist to wipe off his mouth and pulled a separate cloth from a pouch on her side to offer it to the woman. "It's my fault for not tightening his collar tight enough. I'm never sure how far to go with it and he keeps slipping out."

While her nose did wrinkle at the feeling of the creature's drool slipping into her sandal, she wasn't put off as much as one might expect. She'd had her hands in much worse over the years. In fact, the resulting canine grin just made her laugh.

"Ill? I am sorry to hear that." She accepted the cloth and balanced on one leg to clean up the other foot. "If a collar is troublesome, perhaps a harness of a sort would work better for him? It would be off of his neck while still securing him to you." She cocked her head slightly as she slipped her sandal back on and held the cloth out. "If I may, what is he? I've never seen the like of him before."

At least she didn't seem to be offended by him; that was a relief! Sariza offered a small, tempered smile of her own and reached up to scratch behind the Duruf's curled ear. "That's a good idea, really. I don't normally take him out into the streets like this so I hadn't really thought to look into alternatives." More often than not she was too busy with etiquette lessons, weapons training and such to give him the kind of outside exposure he needed. He got plenty of exercise, of course, but most was with her.

Taking the cloth, Sariza slipped it back into the pouch at her waist with the other soggy material. "He's a duruf. I found him chasing strangers in Sulburi and took him in. Apparently they're common in Belrea and I can't for the life of me figure out what brought him to Oba."

Aari gave a small nod, happy to have helped. While her own pet was a giant bug that she never bothered leashing up, it was common enough to see pack animals and the like with body harnesses. If it worked on the big animals, why not the small ones? "I am sure the stable would be able to make one for you." Even as she spoke though, she took in the other's features. That was a solid woman in front of her; basically her physical opposite. She was willing to bet the woman could make her own harness if she wanted to!

"A duruf?" What an odd name for an equally odd creature. With the explanation, Aari found her heart ache a little. "I do not doubt that someone with more coin than sense decided to invest in an exotic pet without bothering to learn how to care for him and grew careless." Realizing her tone had sharpened slightly, she took a step back and let her smile lighten up again, leaning to focus on the duruf. "Or he was a sneaky stowaway on one of those airships and decided he wanted to stick around."

"That's what I was afraid of. When I first found him I tried looking for his owner, but no one stepped up to claim him." She'd searched the city for a week before finally giving up and deciding to keep the little thing. He wasn't a 'practical' beast to have around her home, but he served his purpose in other ways.

Sariza had to quirk a brow at the shift in her tone. Something had obviously struck a nerve, but as curious as it made her she didn't want to pry.

The duruf in question snorted again, looking up with his tongue hung out of his mouth at the two women. "Either way he's being cared for now and spoiled beyond all belief so I think he's happy." Sariza smiled. "I think I'll just end up carrying the rest of the day, though; with this kind of a crowd he would probably just get lost."

The duruf was certainly a good distraction. She chuckled again at the slobbery creature and nodded. "He certainly looks happy. My own pet is.. much less expressive. I suppose that comes with having mandibles versus a muzzle. A maglardilla can be surprisingly cuddly, but they certainly don't smile as far as I can tell." The critter had been left back home since she was uncertain how it would fare in the cold of Zena. She already missed its consistent, silent presence.

"And we can't have you getting lost to the crowd," she cooed, wiggling her fingers at the duruf. It was so.. ugly cute. Cugly?

A maglardilla? Sariza couldn't help the way her smile dropped a little and her lip started to curl. She quickly steeled her expression, but the 'damage' had been done. She just...couldn't imagine why someone as nice as this would choose to keep a giant bug as a pet. "Is that...so..." If she never had the opportunity to cuddle such a creature she wouldn't shed a tear over it.

The duruf lifted it's head just enough to come closing to her fingers, nuzzling them with his thick mane. "I'm sorry to have kept you from the festival for so long; I'm sure this wasn't how you were planning to spend your time." Maybe she was here to buy some new clothes, a few treats or to celebrate the patron Godds...Either way Sariza doubted being slobbered on was on the agenda.

Like with the slobber, Aari found herself more amused than anything else at the young woman's reaction. Indeed, a maglardilla had never been on her wish list, but it had come when she had needed something to focus on. The rest was history. "Yes, it is so," she confirmed, resisting the urge to laugh out loud.

Given the go ahead, she dug her fingers further into the eager canine's fur. It certainly was a nice change from the hard shell and pointy little stick legs. The festival? Oh, right. "There is no need to apologize. I quite enjoyed meeting you two."

She couldn't help noting to herself that they had arrived to stop her right after she had told the Oban gods to keep to themselves... Whether coincidence or karma, she would perhaps have to watch her tone a little closer when talking to the spirits around them. "I do not doubt that you have more to attend to, so I won't detain you any further."

The duruf wheezed happily under the affection and if Sariza hadn't had such a firm hold on him he may have completely melted over the other woman's hand! As it was she could only smile at his antics, offering a little reserved laugh in place of the true mirth she felt bubbling up inside.

"Actually, it's my day off today." For the first time in ages it had been just Sariza and as much as she thought she wanted that bit of alone time this was surprisingly nice. She didn't get a lot of chances to interact with others who didn't want her for some reason or another and...she didn't really want it to end. "Would you...maybe want to see the fire dancers with me?"

"A day off is always a treat, is it not? I hope you enjoy the rest of your day then." She leaned in a little closer to make kissy faces at the pleased duruf. While such play wasn't in her usual behavior, she had also never had an animal to entice such expressiveness from her. When the offer came, Aari felt herself go two different ways. The one was eager to continue on her journey, having intended to simply pass through the festival only for a brief refreshment. Yet, the other direction... She found her smile warming happily. "Honestly.. I would love to," she assured. A playful glint came to her eye and she pressed a finger tip to the duruf's nose gently. "That is.. if I may hold him for a short time~"

Sariza had honestly expected a polite, but resolute 'no'. She wasn't very adept at making 'friends', so putting herself out there was more than a little nerve wracking. Having her duruf there was helping to break the ice, but she didn't truly smile under the other woman agreed to spend more time with her.

It was...honestly, a little validating to know that others wanted to spend time with her, even if they didn't stand anything to gain in return. "Oh yes, please, give my arms a break." Sariza laughed and gently passed him off.
