Summer Festivals

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Summer was drawing closer and closer and the different villages around Tendaji were beginning to plan their summer festivals. It was a tradition in Tendaji - to celebrate the Gods every year in the summer when spirits were high and food was at its most abundant.

All the races had their own gods to celebrate, whatever those might have been, and every person had their own feelings one way or the other.

[ What did they mean to you? With the summer fast approaching, it must be somewhere (no matter how small) on everyone’s thoughts. And what are your thoughts on the other culture’s gods? ]

Etana had been in Haukea for almost a year with Pello. In this time she had been to many festivals, but this one felt different. It was a celebration of the gods. In Haukea she felt slightly out of place, the hapuna using this time to meditate and sunbathe and generally relax in the ocean. Meanwhile the moakai would not have been doing any such thing. It would have been seen as wasted time to them. She had taken the day to venture off and see what it was that the haukea were doing, but she didn’t have much of an appeal to be even lazier than she had been since she had moved there.

She wandered to a stall, looking to see what they were selling, but was unsurprised to see that it was unmanned and closed down. There was a sign that read ‘be back after break’. It was wholly unsurprising.

Malea wasn’t used to stepping foot outside of Elehun, so to her everything seemed new and... well, just so crisp. The water in Elehun was murky and cloudy, all the sediment just floating everywhere you went, but in Haukea the water was just so clear and clean. You could see forever it felt like, and it had Malea in awe.

She was out on business, having mixed up her latest batch of a sleeping draught that she hoped would sell well. It was just a little something, the vials only enough for two nights’ rest, but she was still getting the recipe used to such big batches.

She didn’t have enough to sell to have a stall per say, but she had a basket with her little vials, each one tied with a small pearl on a string. All she had to do was wait for her first customer she supposed.

Etana turned from the stall with the sign and spotted a small menehune girl with a basket. She was a quiet looking little thing, but she seemed like a nice break from the laid back hapuna she was currently surrounded with. It might be nice to talk to someone who possibly valued a work ethic like the moakai did back home.

She swam up to the girl and nodded her head to the basket she carried. ”So what’s in the basket?” Etana asked.

Malea was caught up watching the other hapuna swim leisurely around the town square, they seemed like they were just so at ease with themselves. She didn’t even notice that there was someone approaching her. Like herself, their colors were much darker than the bright and flamboyant hapuna, though this girl’s was still vibrant. She was a sight. She had heard of the moakai, but had never seen one in person. To be fair though, until this trip she had never seen a hapuna either. ”Oh! I, um, I’m selling my potions.” She waved an arm over the basket, her wide eyes scanning the girl further.

”They’re sleeping draughts. To help with rest… though I can see that the hapuna get plenty of rest as it.” She joked. Either sleeping draughts were going to be a complete hit or a total failure here. The hapuna either didn’t need any help with sleep, or they would think it was perfect for their laid back lives.

Etana mused out loud, ”Well I think you’ve found the right place to sell then.” She pulled on one of her braids, ”I suppose I should probably invest in some, I can’t seem to relax enough for the people who live here.” She joked back. Not that living with the hapuna was all negative, she had her complaints and her disapproval for some things, but they were all very friendly and just generally nice. She supposed that was something. And Pello was hapuna and she had known him for most of her life now.

”Well I can sell you something if you’d like.” Malea blushed lightly at the seriousness the moakai presented herself with. While the hapuna were so welcoming and kind this girl seemed to have a cloud over her shoulder. Though maybe it was just a mood she was in. She refused to believe that this girl was a bad person, maybe it was just an off day. ”It’ll be two copper for one, I can make you a deal if you want to buy two.” She began. ”You just have to take it about an hour before you want to go to sleep and it’ll help you get more restful sleep and it makes falling asleep much easier.” She instructed the girl.

”Are you visiting Haukea?” She asked, trying her best to make small talk during the sale.

Etana listened to the girl’s instructions, interested in how someone so shy looking managed to not only make these potions but suddenly be so sure of herself while talking about them. ”Well, I guess I’ll have to take two then.” She smirked to the girl.

”No, not visiting. I live here.” She offered. She had been in Haukea for so long it was definitely accurate to say that she lived there now.

Malea was surprised that the girl lived in Haukea. She didn’t seem the type at all. Not that she was trying to judge a book by its cover, but Haukea was known for being very laid back. She would imagine it was hard for someone who didn’t fit in to live there. The girl must just be having a bad day because why else would she choose to settle somewhere like Haukea if she didn’t feel like she belonged?

”Oh I see. I live in Elehun — not that you asked. I’m sorry, I may be over sharing.” She started to back track. She didn’t want to seem like she was prying. ”I, well, I came here to sell my potions for the festival. It’s quite a sight, right? Back in Elehun we have a whole celebratory ritual, lots to do, lots of honoring the Gods. This is very... different.” Malea handed the two potions to the girl. ”I’m Malea.”

It was curious to see how confident she was when talking about her craft, but then how absolutely mousy she became when speaking any other time. ”Etana.” She offered her name in return, palming the potions and exchanging them for the four copper in her hand.

”Yes, it is different. We don’t have Gods in Ka’lei per say, but the customs are still surprising to see firsthand.” Etana replied. She swirled the pale silver concoction in the bottles. It was very pretty. ”These look nice.” She complimented.

Etana was a pretty name. She looked down at her hand and saw the four coins. ”Oh! There’s a deal for buying two, remember?” She chirped out. ”It’s only three coppers for two of them, so you get one half price.” She beamed to the girl and gave her one of the coppers back.

”I think it would be interesting to see what the celebrations looked like in Ka’lei, too.” Malea offered. She didn’t mind traveling, but Elehun definitely seemed like the only place she would want to call home. Her fathers were there too, so why would she want to leave them?

Etana smiled back at the girl when she handed her her extra coin. Malea just seemed too happy to be able to sell them, it spread the mood that was for sure. ”Well, I’m sure Elehun’s is also a sight to see. Much more interesting than what we have in Ka’lei. At least from the sounds of it.” The moakai would have much rather been working and hunting than taking the day off to celebrate something so intangible.

They had the currents and that was their ‘faith’ so to speak. The underwater currents were so strong they were an entity in themselves. It could ruin a family in seconds with one wrong move, and something to be respected.

Malea nodded her head. She didn’t want to make the other girl think that she thought Elehun’s customs were better than anywhere else, but spectacle was a good word for it. It was definitely a show of sorts compared to Haukea and Ka’lei.

”Maybe someday you would be able to see it for yourself?” She offered.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 04, 2021 2:35 pm

”Maybe.” Etana responded. It wasn’t that far fetched of an idea. She hadn’t really thought about going that far inland, but her and Pello had been wanting to travel, so why not? Pello wanted to go big, travel to Tendaji and all over, but they could start with small steps, right? Though they wouldn’t make it to this year’s festival, so maybe they wouldn’t start small, maybe they would end small.

”Well it was nice meeting you, Malea.” She smiled to the girl warmly and waved and arm. ”Maybe we’ll see each other again.”

Malea returned the girl’s warm smile with a very large one of her own. It was always nice to meet new people, especially when they turned out to be so pleasant. Etana was a good first customer outside of Elehun.

”Maybe we’ll cross paths traveling.” She waved farewell herself and watched the girl receded into the crowd, watching her own basket and hoping she could sell out for the day.
