Summer was drawing closer and closer and the different villages around Tendaji were beginning to plan their summer festivals. It was a tradition in Tendaji - to celebrate the Gods every year in the summer when spirits were high and food was at its most abundant.

All the races had their own gods to celebrate, whatever those might have been, and every person had their own feelings one way or the other.

[ What did they mean to you? With the summer fast approaching, it must be somewhere (no matter how small) on everyone’s thoughts. And what are your thoughts on the other culture’s gods? ]

Over the years Pyrrha had developed a friendly relationship with her neighbors, specifically the Hapuna and Menehune. While she dealt with the Menehune more frequently her daughters and partner tended to prefer the more colorful reefs to the inland swamplands. A few of the Hapuna had grown close enough for the Elarian to call ‘friends’ and she met with them as frequently as she could both to trade goods as well as stories. When the girls decided to venture towards the reef it was because of these kind souls that Pyrrha knew they would be kept safe.

One such being was Mea ʻai; an older Hapuna with the loveliest red skin she’d ever seen. When Pyrrha had first met Mea’ai she’d thought a battle had been waged in the reef because she’d mistaken the woman’s scales for fresh blood. The aging matriarch was scarcely half Pyrrha’s height, putting her level with the elarian’s growing girls, but her attitude was that of any true elder. She demanded respect through her actions, not just her words, and the girls benefited greatly from it. If they were good Mea’ai would treat them with stories and sweet treats, but if they misbehaved they were punished.

On a particularly warm afternoon Pyrrha found the normally sunbathing Hapuna eagerly moving about the reef. They were busy setting up what looked to be a festival, but she’d never really seen one before. It was similar enough to what she’d seen growing up for the act itself to be familiar, but things here were just so much more….lively than on Yael that for a moment Pyrrha couldn’t help staring. She may very well have stayed there had someone not called out to her. Her eyes drifted over the brightly decorated bazaar to Mea’ai, surrounded by a group of smaller Hapuna that Pyrrha surmised was the mass of grandchildren she’d acquired over the years. So many were clinging to her, asking questions about this or that before the older woman shooed them off. A few skittered into the water while a couple hung back, temporarily stunned by the towering Elarian until Pyrrha gave them a soft smile and a cheerful wave. After that the children laughed among themselves and went after their cousins.

“I’m surprised you aren’t napping.” Pyrrha teased as she came closer. The waves may have lapped at Mea’ai’s hips, but they just ghosted against the elarian’s shins. “It’s such a warm day; it would have been perfect.”

“You’re right, it would have,” She agreed mournfully. It didn’t take a sharp eye to see the way Mea’ai picked across the reef as if her bones were aching. Pyrrha resisted the urge just to scoop her up and pack her, but she didn’t want to embarrass the matriarch. “We’ve got a lot to do today, though, so I can’t slack up now.”

And that was when Pyrrha learned the reason behind the flurry of activity. Apparently for the next couple of days the Hapuna would be hosting a festival to respect “Mother Ocean”. In their eyes the tides were as good as the touch of a goddess itself and her energy poured through the very water itself. That much Pyrrha didn’t have trouble understanding. She’d always been keenly aware of the energy her mother goddess sent out into the world and the way it connected with her fellow deities. When Pyrrha had been asked if she wanted to celebrate she’d readily agreed, but on the condition that she be allowed to go back for her partner and daughters. Such a spiritual journey should be embraced by everyone she could muster!

It was just beyond fascinating to her that they didn’t teach the Ocean as something to be feared but rather an entity to love. The waves were just as vicious as the edge of a blade and the Ocean’s depths could kill as quickly as it could nurture, and yet it wasn’t an evil thing. It was simply the cycle of life.

When one of Mea’ai’s grandchildren held up their arms for Pyrrha to lift them she did and soon enough she was practically covered in squealing little Hapuna. Naturally it didn’t bother her a bit; if anything Pyrrha loved it more than perusing the various shops that had been set up! Just seeing the Hapuna she was spending time with was a testament to Mother Ocean’s love. She had allowed Mea’ai to age as gracefully as one could in the reef and despite the rough storms she’d weathered the woman was as strong as ever. She’d raised several clutches of eggs in the warm, summer sun and now she was able to witness her children do the same. It was a life that Pyrrha hoped she, too, could one day enjoy.
