‘You need to find yourself a good wife, my boy. Someone able to handle life out here. That girl’s family lives outside of town and those are decent birthing hips, so she’ll do fine.’

What was this, shopping for a mule?

Nok glared as he was pushed forward toward the strange woman. This just felt wrong on so many levels… His father’s fascination with finding Nok a bride was new, and Nok just was not sure how he felt about it all. He was still working on his swordsmanship after all! He didn’t have time for this, let alone the interest. Of course, when had his own desires mattered that much? Everything he did was for the good of his family…Nok was starting to think that even he had his limits though.

Alfina adjusted the tray on her hip so that it hung more comfortably, and resumed calling out again for attention from those passing by. Sure, she could have built a stall for herself, but stalls got stuck in one place. She liked being able to walk around town with her tray of baked goods to find those interested rather than make them find her. Once her food got popular enough… she just had to keep saving up, and she could get something really nice!

When the two men approached, she gave them her bright smile. “Hello! Would you like to purchase some of my cookies? I made them fresh this morning!”

Both men couldn’t help leaning forward with interest. Nok managed a nod. “Just one,” he requested, his father doing the same. If nothing else, he could enjoy the rare treat of real cookies! Considering their simple and environment-safe cooking situation back home, baked goods were not a common appearance.

The elder Krahn chewed his cookie slowly. “You’re a good cook then,” he observed. With a grunt, he reached out to smack Nok’s back. “See that? She cooks, too. That’ll come in handy. How old are you?”

Alfina was more than happy to hand over a couple cookies, watching their expressions eagerly. The younger one seemed to legitimately enjoy the treat, but the older one… Her smile took on a confused tilt. ‘Handy?’ “I’ve never heard it put that way, but I do find it useful,” she mused, giggling lightly. What an odd old man! Why would her age matter? She turned most of her attention to Nok. "You should buy a few to take home for later if you like them!"

Nok began to nod in reply, eager to have more of those snacks. “I’ve got a couple Keldari skins in my pack. How many cookies for one of them?”

Krahn rolled his eyes. “Would be better if you would make those for us back home, provided you're the right age,” he urged, nudging Nok’s side with an elbow while ignoring the irritated look he was getting. “I gotta see Boren; you finish up here.” He looked Alfina up and down once more before he chuckled and turned away. “Hope she’s not planning to gain too much more weight. Learn some real cooking.” he muttered loud enough to be heard by the youths.

Alfina gave Nok a delighted smile. Perhaps it wasn’t straight coin, but she could use the skins just as well, or trade them later. “Depends on what they look like, I guess. Their condi-” Her eyes widened slightly at the elder man’s comment. Home? “I.. well, it would be easier for you, yes... I only work out of my own home though.” This conversation was taking an interesting turn. Then those observations came up again, and her cheeks flared warm, eyes locked on the elder man's back as he walked away. “E-excuse me?!”

No one would ever argue that Nok was the most cultured of individuals, but even he knew enough to not comment on a woman’s weight! His mother would skin him if he dared such a thing. Yet, there walked his father commenting like it was no big deal. Seeing the shock on the other’s face, he sighed and shook his head. “Ignore him. The skins are good, I'll show.” He moved right along, a hand dipping into his pack to shuffle things around. He knew the skins were in the mess somewhere.

Though Nok was unphased, Alfina stared at him with shocked embarrassment. “No, wait.. What did he mean by that?” she demanded, stomping a foot for emphasis. “I can cook all sorts of things. I make dinner for my family all the time, and they love it. Besides, I’m not overweight!” She looked down at herself for confirmation, but felt her breath catch. She didn’t train like many of the others around her, and clearly not like the fit young man standing in front of her.. but to warrant that comment? “I’m not.. Right?” Oh gosh, this strange and very in shape man wasn’t the right one to ask…

With the question posed, Nok looked up briefly from his bag. Well, if she wanted an answer… This felt like a trap. “Soft, but not overweight,” he observed, turning his attention back to the pack. Everyone in his family was very lean from their hard-lived lives, so seeing the well-fed young woman was an obvious difference in his eyes. Not a bad difference in his opinion- just noticeable. “See? Good skin,” he announced, yanking out a sleek keldari skin of pale yellow and excellent condition, holding it up for inspection.

Lips pursing slightly, Alfina’s hand shifted to press against her belly. Soft? Was that bad? The elder man had seemed to think so. No one had commented on her weight before, so this was a bit of a shock. “Good skin?!” she squeaked, eyes snapping up only to realize it was not her own skin that was being evaluated. Goodness, that one little comment was giving her a complex! “I mean, yes, it is… good.” She sighed softly and grabbed up a handful of cookies. “Here, I don’t want the skin.” Quite put off from her normally cheerful rhythm, Alfina just wanted to go back home.

Nok cocked his head when the other’s sunken posture finally registered. Yup, his pa had done goofed. “I said to ignore him. I mean it,” he assured with a nod. He held out the skin more firmly at the same time. “No charity. Equal trades always. If you don’t want the skin, then I don’t get cookies.” While he spoke in a very matter-of-fact manner, his eyes were lingering on the cookie tray with longing. There was no going back. He needed those baked goods.

After a pause, his free hand started sifting through his pack again. Not the paper, not the sock, not the dead bug that had been there for a few days now… ah! “Two skins?” he asked, pulling out another quality keldari skin in pale blue tones.

Still rather uncomfortable, Alfina’s lips pressed with doubt. She was taught to respect her elders, of course! Yet, if they were short of tongue like that… and if the man insisted… She could still be respectful without turning into a grouch herself! She had pulled the cookies back to her side, watching the scarred man curiously. “It’s just cookies,” she started to murmur with her smile slowly returning, only to be struck silent again with the second skin presented. “Oh, I’m sure both of those are worth more than this whole tray!" Her eyes narrowed slightly. "...You’re not trying to get me to go home with you, too, are you? I'm not going to marry you just like that.”

Brow lifting, Nok sighed and gave the skins a light shake. “Trade is all. I want the cookies, so I give the skin.” His lips pursed slightly, the scar making his contemplation look more like a snarl. Was it worth that much? Home?! His cheeks finally gave a hint of warmth in return and he shook his head. “If that’s it, I’ll take the whole tray. ..Just cookies, not you. No marrying.” There was a word he was probably supposed to use here… “I’m apology. Pa is trying too hard.”
PostPosted: Sun May 02, 2021 11:37 am

I’m…. apology?’ Alfina let out a small sigh and let her smile grow back to normal. Not quite the bright businesswoman grin, but an honest one. “I know a lot of families expect different things from their kids. It’s okay. I guess, thanks for not dragging me off.” With a look of awe, she wrapped the rest of the cookies in the cloth they were being presented on, and held them out in exchange for the skins. She smiled bashfully while running her fingers over the smooth scales. Now that marriage was securely off of the table, she could relax again. “My sister would probably be appalled to see these; she dances with keldari. She’s amazing at it, too.”

Nok was relieved when the skins were finally taken, and his mouth watered as the sack of cookies came into his possession. There was no way his sisters were getting their hands on this stash. He would need to hide it away to keep it safe from them. He had already started to turn away, hiding places on the brain, when he heard the girl talking again. “Dances with keldari?” He couldn’t help the confusion in his voice. “But.. why?”
