"Hi," said Sylvite, on the other end of the line.

She was perched up on a rooftop high above the city, somewhere where nobody was going to come bother her if she had any luck at all. It would be a nightmare to get caught using her civilian phone. She'd already had to triple check with a Mauvian to make sure nobody was going to be able to track this call.

She was feeling settled into her General duties, though, and since working with Feldspar was going okay, she thought that maybe it was time to bring someone else into the Negaverse under her wing. Preferably, it would be someone cool, someone observant, someone who really wanted to join.

There happened to be someone just like that who's number she already had in her back pocket.

"Elliot, yeah? This is Sylvite, from the Negaverse."

It sounded a little weird just saying it like that, but she had to start somewhere.

"Yeah, the call to adventure!" said Sylvite, wiggling her fingers at the sky as if he was there to see it. Then she shifted, trying to remember to stay professional, like the General she was.

"I mean, it's a little more serious than that," she said, not wanting to give him the wrong idea, "But I guess you already know what I'm calling about? I got the okay for your recruitment." It was a little more complicated than that, since she was able to approve recruitments herself, now, but she didn't want to confuse this guy with too much bureaucracy yet.

"Are you still interested?"

Any time ever was good, both for getting this recruitment done and also for keeping up with Negaverse duties, later. Yeah, Sylvite was feeling better and better about this guy.

"Is now okay?" she asked. "If you tell me where you are, I can come to you, and we can go over stuff." She glanced at the ground, at least a hundred feet down, the cars looking like little Lego models. Yeah, she wasn't asking him to come find her.

"That'll be way easier."

Since there was a little bit more than paperwork to do, and all.

"Okay. Give me like five seconds. Literally. Magic," she explained, then hung up. Luckily she was pretty sure she knew where he was talking about, and she teleported over.

At least, she teleported close. It was probably more like thirty seconds before she picked out the shady dentist from the other storefronts.

She peeked inside the especially shady alleyway. "Hey. Eliot?"

"Okay, look," said Sylvite, already slipping into an amused grin while she gathered up the fabric of her skirt-cape in both hands, "Edna has a point, but like, first of all, this is adorable."

She twisted the fabric to show off the shimmery, pink inner layer.

"Also I shouldn't be spending too much time near any plane engines, and if I do I can always tie it up or something."

While she talked, she walked a little bit deeper into the alleyway, not wanting to stay out in everyone's line of sight for longer than she had to.

"But yeah, I got a promotion, so I'm authorized to do recruitments and stuff now," she said, turning back to look at him expectantly.

Sylvite puffed her cheeks out as she considered the busy street that was still pretty visible from where they were standing.

"Good thinking," she said. "See, this is why we need you. I was gonna ease you into stuff a little more, but, uh."

Stepping forwards, she put a hand on his arm, and they were out of the city in a blink.

They landed in Sylvite's office in Negaspace. It was the same tiny one that had been available back when she'd hit Captain, but it was still dressed up with fairy lights, pink stick on wallpaper, and a lot of kawaii stationary. She nudged the door open so it didn't feel too claustrophobic.

"Welcome to the castle!"

"I don't think there's secret passages in here?" she said, squinting at the wall behind her desk as if she might have missed something.

"It's a lot of offices and meeting rooms. Stuff like that. There are some cool, castle-y parts around, though, and the view from outside is awesome."

There were also crystals absolutely everywhere, even in the rooms that served practical purposes, which Sylvite very much appreciated. In her opinion, more of Earth could really learn from the Negaverse's design sense.

"But yeah, that was magic," she said, wiggling her fingers for emphasis. "That one's not one you learn right away, but you'll get there."

She rolled her shoulders back and stood up as tall as she could at five foot ever, trying to look a little bit more serious. "Okay. Since we're on the subject, are you ready for the powers?"
