Spring was Sekani's favorite season.
Not only did it bring a new life to the land, but it also brought the flower vendors. Merchants from Tendaji, Yael and Belrea would gather to sell their creations on lush spring days. Only mornings with the freshest of weather would do otherwise the flowers would wither, and considering the length of their journeys to get here many weren't keen to have a sale ruined.
Every year Sekani waited patiently for the flower sellers to come around, and when they did he wanted to spend all of his free time looking at them. Of course he rarely bought anything; what he did manage to nab was either neglected because of youthful inattention or far too expensive for his meager savings. This year, though, he was determined to get something truly beautiful! He even had the perfect little pot ready back home to put it in.
He just had to convince someone to take him. His first thought had been Visha, but when he came across his mother Sekani decided she would be just as good. "What'cha doin?" The way he crept closer and his 'sly' little grin were as obvious as the sun in the sky. The boy was not skilled at hiding his intentions.

Kalli was busy folding up the heavy blankets. Since the weather would warm up even more the nights wouldn't be as chilly so they wouldn't be needed. When she heard the voice of her youngest she was in the middle of bringing one corner to the other while she held the blanket in the air. Her red gaze moved to the side so that she could look at him with a soft smile. "I'm putting the blankets away since summer is around the corner." One hand held the corners together and the other slid down to grab the other end and bring it up. Since her actions didn't require her to look at what she was doing she was able to look at her son. "And what are you doing my little fire newt?" Kalli had to wonder what it was that her youngest was up to. Thankfully she knew she didn't need to ask him to empty his pockets like she did with Visha. "I'm surprised you're not outside playing in the yard." Gael's Zanteer, Bastul, loved lazing about in the back yard and he seemed to adore the kids when they came to give him attention.

Sekani rocked back and forth on his heels with a little wiggle to his shoulders. "So you're busy....?" He edged, a little disappointment hanging on the curious words. If she had plans for the day then he might not get to see the flowers after all. It wouldn't stop him from trying, but if he pushed it too far he might get wrapped into chores.
"Weeelllllll I don't wanna." Normally he would have been outside with Bastul and Meeki, his little averin, every second of the day but Sekani had other plans. "If it's not cold anymore then the plants are probably happy, right?" Sekani moved around a little to the side, just to make absolutely sure that she could see his big, round eyes looking up at her. "Happy enough to come out and see everybody."

She paused mid-way to bringing the other corners up and looked at her son. "Only if I want to be.." The way he'd asked her if she was busy had made her think that he wanted something. Of course he continued on talking about the plants and she then understood. Kalliope let out a chuckle and she finished folding the blanket in her hand. "Alright, my little fire newt, if you wanted to go have a look all you had to do was ask." She did her best to pay attention to her children and see what it was they liked. Since Gael was sometimes away at sea for work she liked to write him letters and fill him in so that he didn't feel like he missed anything. "Let me put my shoes on." Kalli didn't wear her shoes in the house to cut back on dirt tracked in. Saved her a little bit when she cleaned.

"I didn't want to if you were doin' stuff." Still, there was no hiding the excitement slipping through his smile at that point. Sekani wouldn't have cared if she asked him to do chores in that moment or not, so long as he got to go! "I saw this really, really pretty pink flower in this book once; do you think they'll have it? It came from...from...." Pausing, the boy furrowed his brow, mouth slightly agape before closing it on a frown. Where had it come from?
"I don't remember...but the guy who had the book was selling them last time so he might have them this time! He'd looked a lot like an Oban at the time so Sekani hadn't given it another thought, but mentioning it to his siblings later let him know that the vendor hadn't been from here at all!

"Sweetie, you don't have to worry. If I'm not working then its not that important." And even if she had been working she likely would have come off the stage to see what her littlest wanted. Who was really going to fault her for that? Looking at how adorable Sekani was, she doubted anyone would. As he rambled on about the pretty pink flower she nodded her head, having not a clue. Kalliope wasn't a flower girl so she didn't know much about them. "I'm not really sure where it's from. I think there are a few different kinds of flowers that can be pink." She somehow doubted that would make her darling son feel any better though. So she smiled and held her hand out toward him, giving a small wiggle of her fingers, for him to take. "We can always go see if he has them."

Sekani briefly reached out of his mother's hand, but then quickly thought better of it. "I forgot!" In a frenzied shuffle the young hybrid took off for his room and snatched up the first pair of shoes he could find. Of course he didn't realize until halfway down the hallway that they didn't match so with a loud huff he ran back the room to change once again. For a moment he paused for a third time, too sure that he'd left his allowance behind, but the sturdy weight of his coin purse on his hip soothed him.
When he returned Sekani's curls were practically bouncing on his head and he was a little out of breath. "Kay, I'm ready." He reached for her hand and took it all too happily. "I'm gonna get a big, pretty plant and it won't die like the last one." For such a dark statement he said it in a bright, chipper tone. The last plant had been cheap, but poorly tended. As much as he'd wanted to show it to his father by the time the man arrived home from work it was little more than a shriveled husk of a thing.

She watched him race off to his room with a smile on her face. Kalli wasn't sure where her little ones got all their energy from but they certainly had a lot of it. When she saw him coming down the hall she thought they were ready to go but he stopped and went back. His mother blinked until she noticed to two different shoes in his hand as he disappeared into his room again. A small chuckle left her as she shook her head at him. When he finally came out ready to go and took her hand she gave a nod to his words. "Alright, which plant were you thinking of? Or did you want the one with the pretty pink flower?" She didn't mention the last plant that had died. She paused at the door to slip her flats on her feet then made sure to grab her small purse and keys before opening the door for the pair of them to leave. "I think I might look for a yellow flower." Having flowers around the house made it seem more colorful and less dull.

"I don't know. The pink one would be really pretty, but..." Sekani looked down for a bit. If it weren't for the hold on his mother's hand he may have tripped or walked off, but thankfully she was guiding him. "It was more than what I had last time and the man selling them said they were really hard to care for." He'd been as nice as a vendor could when dealing with an excitable child, but the man had stressed that this wasn't a 'starter' plant. "He said it was something that some noble's got to put in their garden. I have a garden though, so what's the difference?"
His 'garden', of course, was a few dried out weeds he'd plucked from the city square and one very determined fern. It was far from the luscious, well tended gardens of nobility. He didn't understand the difference between one inexperienced boy and an entire team of well experienced herbalists.
"Ooo, yellow would be pretty! Like a fungus." Sekani perked up and smiled, brought of himself for remembering that fact. "I heard a fisherman talking about it last time we were at the market. Some of the water fuzz is a real bright yellow."

She made sure to keep hold of her son's hand as they walked, not wanting him to trip while he looked deep in thought about the plant he wanted. Kalliope couldn't help the smile on her face either. "Hm, nobles do have pretty plants in their gardens but they don't tend to them themselves." Not wanting him to be discouraged about the plant she thought it best to point out that he was doing all the work himself while a noble wouldn't. The mention of yellow made her try to figure out which plants would have such a color, but then her adorable little newt mentioned a fungus. She cringed slightly. "Oh. No, no fungus sweetie. Those can harm other plants." Not to mention she wasn't so sure she wanted that growing near her home. "They do have a cactus that has a very pretty yellow flower. Just have to make sure not to touch the spikes." The Oban woman smiled down at her child. "Does that sound good?"

Oh, right! Nobles had people to do their stuff for them, so it wasn't like they had all the answers. They just knew people who did. So, if Sekani could talk to the same people then maybe he could figure it out too...
"I once heard someone say this yellow fungus in Jauhar was called radaku vomit. Doesn't that sound gross?" He couldn't help laughing a little, even as he curled his nose. The thought of seeing it everywhere was as nasty as it was cool! To be fair he would probably scoop a bunch of it up, regardless of whether it could hurt him or not, just to show his family. "He said it grew in big bunches after a rainstorm!"
A cactus, though, would be a lot more prickly. He wasn't as much of a fan since there were plenty of those in Oba, but the flowers were pretty...And if it made his mama happy then he guessed they were okay. "So long as Meeki doesn't try to sit on it; he might get hurt." His precious averin would try to get a nap in on it, and stab his little feet!

The mention of the fungus from Jauhar made her smile at him with a nod of her head. "It does sound gross, but it really does look like it. You can ask your big brother, Jax. He used to play in the jungle quite a bit when he was your age." She pointed out as she brought her other hand over to tap her little one on the nose gently. "If it grows after rainstorms then it would need lots of water all the time since it's rather dry most of the time." Mention of the boy's familiar sitting on the cactus made her pause for a second as she thought about that. "Oh, I suppose you're right." There was no stopping a beast from doing what it wanted to do once it made up its mind either, she had learned this the hard way with her keldari. "Then we shall have to look and see what other yellow plants they have." She didn't mind spending time to look so that her boy could get what he wanted. Spoiling her kids was always a pleasure especially when it brought smiles to their little faces.

The little hybrid stuck out his tongue to touch his mother's finger when she booped his nose. For a moment he smirked, as if he were the most clever little thing, before gasping. "Jax! I could write him a let...ter..." Sekani's smile faded into a huffy little pout. "He wouldn't be able to read it. I can't write good." His words were all loopy and wrong. Things he could say just fine didn't come out the same on paper. "I'll just tell him when I see him."
Thinking about all the plants his brother had seen made him think about all the plants all of his elder siblings had seen. There were so many! "So, how come you'll come see the flowers with me, Papa would, Visha would, Korin would, Jax would...but Brexxa won't." He looked up at his mother, his little curls bouncing with every step. "I bet she knows all kinds of yellow flowers, but she wouldn't tell me if I asked."

She gave an exaggerated gasp when her son licked her finger and pulled her hand away like she'd been completely shocked. Kalliope chuckled at his excitement then gave a small shake of her head when he seemed to pout. So many emotions all at once! "If you practice then it'll be better." She said patiently. "And I'm sure if Jax couldn't read it he'd just come over and ask you what the word was." Her older son had come to live in Oba with her but he stayed busy with work most days. He also had his own place so he wasn't at their house as often, however, he did stop in to dote on his younger siblings. As Sekani mentioned all of them going with him to see the plants save for Brexxa she gave a small frown and looked forward. Her step-daughter hadn't taken the birth of her younger siblings so well. "Brexxa is.." How did she explain it? Kalli looked back down at her youngest. "Your older sister isn't very good with words and I don't think she quite knows what to do with little brothers and sisters just yet."

"She doesn't like us." Sekani groused. "If she liked us then she would be like Jax. Or Visha. Or Korin." He had all kinds of older siblings, even one that lived in another country, but they were all nicer to him than Brexxa. "How much longer does she need? There's three kids; shouldn't she be able to at least like one of us?"
Sekani knew that he shouldn't complain about his sister, but it was so hard not to! Any time he felt like asking her to play it was like walking up to a big, snarling beast. Sometimes you would just get swatted away and other times her words were just as scary as actual roars.
