August called it “Negaspace.”

But here, in a strange uniform, with powers Jonah didn’t completely understand yet, August was known as Bloodstone.

It seemed like a fitting name for a man so familiar with blood.

Jonah kept close, almost stepping on the heels of Bloodstone’s boots a couple of times, wary and nervous but trying to hide it. He wanted to be useful. He wanted to help. Bloodstone seemed to think that he would excel at gathering information, and Jonah didn’t want to give him any reason to rethink his decision.

But this place was frightening. Even though Bloodstone told him ahead of time what to expect, Jonah could not stop his eyes from widening as he glanced around.

To think a place like this existed, and most people were entirely unaware of it.

“You really think this General King will think I’m worthy?” he asked.

He knew that Celeste had thought this was a horrible idea. It was the morning after the rescue mission to find Lieutenant Feldspar in the Rift, and even after a decent night of sleep, Bloodstone still felt tired. Then again, he always felt tired. But there was something unique about Jonah that kept Bloodstone’s attention, and in more ways than what he assumed Celeste expected.

Despite the skittish way Jonah looked around, fear in his eyes, there was enough awareness for him to be both cautious and curious. Jonah might not know it, but Bloodstone suspected he wasn’t as cowardly as Jonah thought himself to be. He was in Negaspace, which could be terrifying in and of itself. But Jonah was asking about if he was worthy instead of voicing his discomfort.

“It doesn’t matter what the General King thinks. Since I’ll be taking responsibility for you, it only matters what I think. And I know you’re not going to disappoint me. You haven’t yet,” Bloodstone said as he led the way to General King Axinite’s office. He didn’t turn to look at Jonah as he spoke, so the words were probably colder than he intended them to be. But Jonah hadn’t been scared away yet.

“General King, I am in need of your assistance,” he said after a quick knock in greeting and pushed the door open. “I would like to give Jonah the necessary energy to become an agent. He is intelligent and hard working. I firmly believe he will be an invaluable asset to the Negaverse.”

This got away from me somehow, but it takes place the morning after Feldspar's rescue. RIP Axinite.

Axinite’s room was darker than usual; the lights had been deliberately dimmed and the expanding shadows might have been eerie and unsettling to anyone who didn’t know how warm the General King’s office usually was. There were cookies on the desk, but unlike the pleasant, faint aroma of tea, it now smelled heavily of coffee, and keen eyes might notice the empty cans of energy drinks in the wastebasket by his desk.

He looked up when Bloodstone entered, though it was not with his usual enthusiasm. He’d been poring over something at his desk, and his elbow was propped onto the hard surface. His face had been cradled in the palm of his hand, but he moved his arm down even as he sat up, as if he could slide the ice pack into a drawer without being noticed.

“Captain Bloodstone,” he greeted, with tired enthusiasm. “I’m always grateful for your straightforward introductions. You’ve been busy, lately. Does nothing get you down?”

He pushed himself up into a standing position but didn’t move from behind his desk yet. His smile extended to Bloodstone’s guest--Jonah, apparently, and he looked approving enough, even if he wasn’t willing to suffer through an appreciative nod. “Welcome, Jonah. We can use all the assistance we can get. If you are vouching for him, Bloodstone, I would be more than happy to offer my services. Do you want to do this the same as last time?”

Jonah followed Bloodstone into the office and glanced around.

It was… not quite what he expected when he learned this man’s title. He was expecting some sort of dark throne, not a desk, and energy drinks, and… were those cookies? Jonah looked at them with interest, not because he had any particular fondness for cookies, but because they seemed so out of place here.

But then Axinite spoke and he seemed tired but friendly, and Jonah was able to relax, just a little.

Bloodstone thought him worthy. Bloodstone said Jonah hadn’t disappointed him — a great accomplishment, when Jonah seemed to disappoint most other people in his life. Bloodstone said he would make an invaluable asset.

If Jonah wasn’t distinctly aware that he still had to prove himself to this General King, he would have cried from all the praise.

Instead, he stood at attention, quiet, scared that if he opened his mouth to speak, he would stutter and stumble over his words, and Axinite would know that he wasn’t worthy at all.

But he could be, maybe, if he had the chance.

“No,” was Bloodstone’s simple but efficient response to Axinite’s question. Not where the Negaverse was concerned. Sure he had a bandage still wrapped around his head from his wounds from the day before, and he was tired, but if he didn’t get this done, he might end up regretting it. Jonah had potential that he didn’t want to waste. The sooner he was an agent the better.

“Yes, sir,” he said, adding just a smidge more politeness now that Axinite was offering his assistance. Assistance that Bloodstone unfortunately needed. Maybe once he became a General himself, he would be able to skip this step. But he didn’t want to turn Jonah into a youma by mistake.

Just as he had with Celeste, now Carnallite, he turned to Jonah so Axinite could place a hand on his shoulder and provide him with the necessary energy to push into Jonah’s starseed.

“Jonah, I’m going to put my hand into your chest. I need to give your starseed more energy. With the General King’s assistance, of course,” he added with a polite nod to Axinite for his help. “It’s going to hurt, but it won’t last long, and then you’ll be better than you are now. When you’re ready…”

He waited until Jonah stepped forward, waited until it was obvious that he was ready for something he still didn’t know much about. He knew Jonah had something special, it was just a matter of drawing it out.

Axinite nodded; he wasn't used to, nor did he expect credit for his ‘assistance’, so it was more of a polite gesture of acknowledgement. He might have been tired from his previous work, but he still seemed to manage summoning a bit more for this occasion.

It helped, being in the Dark Kingdom, where Metallia’s influence was all around. He could draw upon the Chaos in the air and use himself as a battery for Bloostone to manipulate. He wasn’t particularly worried that Bloodstone wouldn't be able to handle the flow of energy. He’d done this before and he obviously cared for Jonah.

Axinite supposed that he’d be in good hands, but he was as cautious as ever; he placed his hand on Bloodstone’s shoulder as he had before and began to work the energy into him.

He needed to offer no warning, no reassurance; Bloodstone was straightforward and transparent. He would make this as quick as quick and painless as possible, but there was only so much he could do.

Jonah stepped forward before the fear and the uncertainty could take hold.

The less he thought about it, the easier this would be.

Bloodstone’s hand touched his chest, then slipped inside. That was strange in and of itself, but Jonah didn’t dwell on it, closed his eyes so he wouldn’t see — wondered if that made him seem weak, if he should tip his chin up pridefully instead, stare Bloodstone in the eye while the Captain and the General King fed power into him.

Seconds passed at most before Jonah realized “It’s going to hurt” was a bit of an understatement.

He gasped and grit his teeth to stop himself from crying out, then cried out anyway, because he was not the stoic sort of man who could experience pain without much of a reaction. Jonah squeezed his eyes shut tighter, because if he didn’t he would cry, and that was the last thing he wanted to do in front of someone who thought him worthy, who vouched for him in the presence of such a great man as a General King.

Power surged through him, filling him from scalp to toe tip, tingling through his extremities, throbbing through his chest.

When it was over, Jonah’s eyes were wet, but the tears did not fall. He gasped for breath and collapsed forward, nearly colliding with Bloodstone’s chest.

Bloodstone hadn’t expected Jonah to be able to handle the change like Celeste had. He knew that Jonah didn’t have that kind of physical fortitude, and that was fine. He had other plans for Jonah.

When he nearly collapsed forward, Bloodstone quickly caught him and placed a supporting hand on his shoulder, holding onto him so he could regain his composure in front of the General King. Bloodstone hadn’t missed how Jonah was trying to present himself as someone who could handle this. And he wasn’t going to break that illusion he made for himself, although Bloodstone didn’t think he needed to worry about something like that. Not with Axinite at least.

“Your new name is Roselite,” he said after a moment of making sure Jonah wasn’t going to collapse completely. “I’ll show you around once you’re feeling up to it. Can he sit here for a moment, General King?” Bloodstone asked, and for as gruff as he could be most of the time, he didn’t want to push Roselite too much too quickly.

Axinite most certainly did not think poorly of Roselite for his response, and as Bloodstone caught him, Axinite had already drawn a chair closer for him. “Please, have a seat. Don’t strain yourself. You can use the couch if you need to lay down. I’ve got snacks. Sugar, and fruits, and energy drinks and electrolytes.”

He moved quickly, drawing out a cold sports drink, a peeled orange, and a small plate of cookies, returning to offer them.

“You did a good job, both of you. I’m sorry, I know that was hard. I’m proud of you both.”

Jonah — Roselite; that was his name now, too — collapsed into the chair, even though a part of him would like to let Captain Bloodstone support his weight a little longer. Bloodstone was usually such a cold man; it was nice to see and feel the warmth beneath.

Roselite tried to catch his breath, but it took time. At least the tears never fell, even if his eyes continued to glisten. He took the sports drink and sipped it, ate some of the orange, a bite or two of cookie, and tried not to let his shame drown him.

“Th-Thank you, Sir,” he said, failing to distinguish between the two superior officers.

He was grateful to both of them, and hoped he would have the chance to express his gratitude with more than stuttered words and labored breathing.

That there was a couch available, that there were food and drinks available, all of it seemed to suggest that this was a common occurrence, that no one in this room would look down on Roselite for needing to rest — except for Roselite himself. He desperately wanted to be stronger, more capable, and he feared he never would be.

Like this, maybe he could prove himself. A new power thrummed through him, reined in for now, but brimming with potential all the same.

“Thank you,” he said again, when his voice was more steady.

Roselite lifted his head, looked between them both and smiled. “Thank you.”

The choice to join, when Bloodstone presented it to him, had been an easy one.

Only time would tell if Roselite came to regret it.
