NPC Horse Clutch Contst
Opens: Now
Ends: April 14th @ 4pm PT

It's a little late but Zenobiath and Aresoth have some not-so-little-dragons who are well in need of a home! Hopefully some folks are interested in a few more characters, becuase these babies need homes!

If we don't have enough interest or entries, we will simply put them up for adoption at a later date.

1. These dragons must all be stationed at High Reaches Weyr
2. None of these can be the first to have hatched, or the last. It's probably safest to say they Hatched somewhere in the middle, during all the hubbub.
3. None of them can have suffered traumatic injury or done anything that would have affected the clutches.
4. None of these weyrlings should be notable rulebreakers or troublemakers. They all graduated on time, with their class, and have thus far been relatively quiet.
5. It is possible someone (or multiple someones) might choose the same theme. If you both win they will simply be considered twins -- Uridith's lineage is prone to twins and Zenobiath is no exception.

Dragons Available:
1 NPC Bronze
2 NPC Browns
1 NPC Blue
4 NPC Greens

The dragons MUST be based on a type of horse breed. We ask you do NOT use horse breeds that have already been used. We also ask that you do not use any horse breed that is exctinct, prehistoric, wild, or cross-breeds. Generally, look for horse breeds that are used in sport, show, work, or are otherwise domesticated. (So no mustang, zebra, zorse, etc.)

We will allow you to either create 2 characters (one elibible to Impress a bronze and another character who could Impress any color) or one character with two dragon options (one male dragon, one female dragon).

Please note, if you make a character who cannot Impress a bronze and happen to roll a bronze, you will either be re-rolled, or given a different color dragon of staff's choice.

After Candidates and general dragon personalities are created, we will roll winners for each color. If your color preference is not listed and you win a dragon of that type, you will be disqualified for the win--so keep that in mind.

Additionally, staff has every right to surprise folks with more colors or pets should we choose.

Please note these must be hroses-- not ponies!

Please avoid using these horse themes:
American Paint
Halflingers
Akhal-Teke
Percheron
Caspian
Clydesdale
Lipizzan
Arabian
Holsteiner
Thoroughbred
Knabstrupper
Fresian
Irish Cob
Falabella
Andalusian
Shire
Appaloosa
Icelandic
American Quarter Horse

Yee-Haw! Let's Ride!

This Profile Is Eligible for ALL Colors -- bronze, brown, blue and green!
Color Preference Bronze, blue, brown, green

The Rider

Name: K'ro, formerly Kazyro
Age: 21
Nameday: 3556.03.25
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Apprentice Fisher

Physical Description:
A tall, gangly youth, Kazyro still has that look of not quite having filled his body yet. His limbs are long and slender. His stance is a little awkward, a little lacking in refinement… Despite being 6'2, he seems to just fade into the background. He has dark skin, though his fingers and legs are marred by various nicks and cuts from his former life. His build suits long-distance running, and he has a surprising amount of discrete muscle tone and stamina.

Kazyro might be considered handsome, in a cute, gawky kind of way. He has short, curly hair, often adorned with a colourful bandana. His face has not shed its boyish roundness, although hints of stubble age him and lend him maturity. He has sea-green eyes, inherited from his mother, and a dazzling, charming smile that adds warmth and cheekiness to his overall look. Roguish might be too strong a term, but if he applied himself in maintaining his appearance, Kazyro could be quite striking.

He prefers loose clothing, and tends to wear more colourful garments, life permitting. He favours heavy boots and practical wear over luxury and fashion. One of his most treasured possessions is a golden bead bracelet, made by his younger sister. It reminds him of home and the family he left behind.

Personality:
An easy-going fellow who enjoys life's little things, Kazyro tends to focus on the small joys and good times. Sure, the world is full of worry, but his levity and joie-de-vivre shield him against the bleakest moments. He's fond of practical jokes and wordplays, and makes a lot of time for optimistic folk who look on the bright side of life.

He is possessed with a deep desire for adventure, drawn to exploring the horizon in the very depths of his soul. His wanderlust was tamed somewhat when he Impressed, finding his so-called 'anchor' at last. Still, exploring the peaks and caves of the High Reaches region fascinates and captivates him- restless, Kazyro is most content when he is moving around and experiencing something awesome.

His insouciance and lack of care for the serious parts of life holds him back a little. He lacks a sense of responsibility, and his wingleader may need to remind him of the importance of his duties to Pern- if his dragon hasn't already done so. His casual approach to life leaves him somewhat emotionally shallow, too, and Kazyro makes a poor confidant. He doesn't like drama, or politics, and he isn't really interested in tragedy. He pulls away when things seem serious, or tactlessly applies his brand of joking fun to 'fix' the situation.

When it comes to social interactions, Kazyro is rather oblivious to his effect on others. He can be tactless, but he is also evasive on matters of the heart. It's hard for him to imagine how tricky emotions can be- life is so straight-forwards for him, after all. It's not through a callous lack of empathy- Kazyro can care, he just doesn't understand why people get themselves all muddled up with confusing or sad things. There's so much out there to experience and enjoy, after all! His inability to commit to something substantial and long-term means he's likely to fall into a relationship than chase one. Chances are, the one who wins his affection will be a fast and long-lasting friend first.

Positive Trait List Fun-loving - Spirited - Curious
Negative Trait List Oblivious - Devil-may-care - Shallow

History:
First born son of a wherhandler and a journeyman healer, Kazyro had a steady and fulfilling childhood at Black Sand Hold. He loved his island home, and spent a lot of his formative Turns exploring (under his parents' ever vigilant eye). He had little mind for Harper lessons, although he was not a dull child, and when the question of his craft came to light, his teachers were rather stumped. He was competent but unengaged, they claimed, and needed something physical to occupy him.

Karrodin, his father, considered training the lad as a future wherhandler, but Kazyro took his fate into his own hands and signed on as a shiphand beneath Captain Lorogan, of the Western Triumph. Sailing and fishing became everything to Kazyro, who yearned to explore the new horizons teasing him from those black, sandy shores. Lorogan was stern but fair, and held very anti-pirate beliefs that he hammered into his crew.

As young Kazyro spent longer and longer away from home with each trip, his parents gifted him a firelizard egg at age fourteen. It soon hatched a fun-loving, gentle little green that Kaz named Bubbles, for the markings on her hide.

In his sixteenth Turn, Thread began to fall again. Chaos and pandemonium ensued. Fortunately, Kazyro's family survived, as well as the ship upon which he served. When he returned to shore, he was brought low by the devastation. He stayed landside for a Turn, helping fellow Holders rebuild.

In his seventeenth Turn, he was Searched by Western Weyr to Stand for Vimiath and Blundarth's clutch of 25. Unsuccessful, he nonetheless stayed at the Weyr, helping out with his fishing skills. He participated in candidate swaps when Western and High Reaches were on good terms, but had a remarkable lack of success. The chores, physical training and lessons continued, with Kazyro questioning if he was better off returning to the Fishercraft as a seafarer. His father encouraged him to continue Standing in a letter, noting how proud he was of his son. Buoyed by the unexpected encouragement, Kazyro decided to continue to Stand until he aged out.

It wasn't until Zenobiath's maiden clutch that Kaz's luck changed. It was a routine swap to High Reaches by this point, with the regular bothersome cold to accompany him on the trip. At least the Hatching Grounds were warm, and the young man watched as one after another, the newborn dragons found their partner.

At some point a middling-sized egg revealed the newest addition to Pern: a rather serious and considerate looking fellow. The dragon took its time inspecting the candidates, sometimes sniffing and eyeing them up for minutes at a time. Kazyro's interest waxed and waned as other dragons hatched around the odd creature, but he stood to attention as the creature settled before him.

The minutes stretched on- it felt like candlemarks sweating beneath this unwavering stare. Then, without prompting, a cool voice slipped into his mind, twisting about his own soul, settling down in a space he never realised was empty,

yes… You are definitely worthy. Silvaciath senses your potential. But there is much to adjust. Please, arrange for some food… I hunger and require a bath before this goo becomes positively permanent.

Kazyro blinked… he'd… he'd Impressed. He'd found a dragon who thought him… well, worthy.

Well.

That was… amazing!

Please don't make me wait longer than I have to. It's very undignified. Shall we go?

And so began K'ro's new life as a dragonrider. Though his heart may rest with his family and Western Weyr, Silvaciath drummed home the importance of faithfulness to one's family and duty, and the young man has adjusted to High Reaches as his new home. With Silvaciath's guidance, K'ro even became a decent rider, his love for exercise and drills making up for his lacklustre enthusiasm for theory lessons. The two now dutifully fight Thread, having narrowly avoided some bad scores along the way.

Other:
Father (+23): Wherhandler Karrodin, of Brown Karrosk
Mother (+21): Journeyman Healer Zyara

Sister (-6): Apprentice Harper Kadya
Brother (-10): Holdbrat Zyadin

Has a green firelizard named Bubbles.

The Dragon

Name: Silvaciath
Origin of Name:
The Black Forest Horse is an endangered horse from the southern part of Germany. The Black Forest, for which the horse is named, is located in the mountainous state of Baden-Württemberg, popular for mining and forestry, and in more recent times as a tourist destination. It has been called many things throughout history, including Abnoba mons, for the Celtic deity who was said to guard the forest; and Silva Marciana, by its Roman neighbours (translating to "Marcynian Forest").

The Black Forest Horse is sturdy and strong, and was developed for working purposes. Due to their adaptability, they were able to thrive in the challenging highlands landscape, and served farmers well during pre-industrial times. Nowadays, with the introduction of the first studbook and breeding regulations, the Black Forest Horse has developed into a well-rounded, versatile work and show family-horse.

With its unique colouring requirements, the Black Forest Horse is a rather spectacular horse to behold. It boasts a chestnut coat with a flaxen mane: its coat can vary from pale to almost black, and its mane may appear silvery, earning it the affectionate 'Dark Fox' nickname.

Silvaciath borrows their name from the old Roman name for Black Forest, Silva Marciana.

Inspiration: Black Forest Horse

Personality:
A complicated creature, Silvaciath may, at first, appear a little stuffy and aloof. In reality, they are a dedicated and steadfast creature, never wavering from their duty or their hearts' desire. They have no time to waste on tangents or inconsequential things. Life has a designated path, a series of challenges to meet and conquer, and Silvaciath plans on achieving all that a dragon can.

In a way, this has made Silvaciath a little intolerant of foolishness or pettiness. They have a harsh response to tomfoolery, verbally lashing those who show a lack of responsibility and seriousness. Silvaciath is a sensitive soul despite this apparent abrasiveness, consumed by their own expectations and fear of disappointing others. All duty and no play can surely break a poor soul.

Reserved and aloof, Silvaciath is not the most social of creatures. In fact, this dragon selects their friends very carefully: ambitious-minded, of course, clever, but not too clever as to pass over Silvaciath in favour of more scintillating company… as devoted as they are to Weyr and Pern would be good. The few who do meet Silvaciath's exacting requirements are granted an assiduously loyal companion. With them, this dragon will exchange quasi-pleasant niceties: Silvaciath is not above the occasional flattery and sweet words, especially for their loved ones.

Some may describe this dragon as high-maintenance, but truly Silvaciath just wants to be the best they can be. They are a wonder to behold, after all, and as such the requirements for frequent baths and oiling are for a good cause. They have a keen interest in human music and dancing, and enjoy watching festivities unfold before them (perhaps Silvaciath is entertained by the fantasy that they are the guest of honour). Regal and sophisticated, Silvaciath is choosy when it comes to the important things in life: a mate will be scrutinised for months before pursuit, and Silvaciath's own Impression was the result of great (and lengthy) deliberation. Their rider's furnishings and clothes are often examined before permitting guests or outside-the-weyr-interaction. They have an eye for detail and design that is impressive even by human standards; when combined with their judgemental, exacting attitude, Silvaciath would make a fantastic Searchdragon in the future.

Positive Traits: Sophisticated - Devoted - Observant
Negative Traits: Prissy - Harsh - Aloof

NPC Egg: An average-sized egg.

Adult Size: Will RNG this when the colour is determined.

Physical Attributes:
Sturdy and strong, Silvaciath is a muscular dragon. They excel at stamina-related tasks, but are not as acrobatic as some of their brethren. Silvaciath has a surprisingly short neck and tail, but somehow still manages to look elegant.

Additional Notes:
Flights are an engagement of choice to the highest degree, and are always carefully planned and considered. Silvaciath is a deliberate flier, both in Flights and Falls, and manoeuvres are only attempted if certain of success. They make an excellent fighting dragon due to their obedient, high-achieving nature.

Impression Effect:
Kazyro's devil-may-care demeanour will be given a makeover: no longer will he wander aimlessly, instead he shall be reminded of his purpose each and every day. Sure, slipping off for an adventure on a restday is a strong and tempting possibility, but Kazyro will learn to balance fun with duty. He will emerge from this bond a better, more responsible man, and will grow to care for those his dragon adores.

Why Me?
Kazyro, even though deliberations took a while, Silvaciath is certain to serve you well. Silvaciath's devotion to duty and family is a grounding focus in Kazyro's life. This serious dragon provides sobriety to the nonchalant youth, and Kazyro can benefit from this dragon's no-nonsense approach to life. Silvaciath's certainty and decisiveness will appeal to Kazyro's easy-going nature: neither bonded likes complications.

In turn, Kazyro provides his dragon with good humour and the ability to relax a little. In fact, Silvaciath may even find themselves enjoying life a little more in their rider's company. Kazyro will encourage his dragon to open up and engage with others, even if both may be a bit tactless at times. Kazyro is a work of art that needs refining, and Silvaciath is happy to take on this never-ending project.

Gotta Rein This In!

This profile has some restrictions!
Eligible For: Chromatic Only
Color Preference: green

The Rider

Name: S'vesi
Age: 27
Nameday: 2.19.3550
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: seems to lean more towards ladies
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Fighter
Physical Description:
A large, large man. S'vesi stands at 6'10" and is broad and muscular, though not all muscle - he likes his food and his drink and isn't vain enough to worry about it, so he has his soft places too. He has thick, brownish-blondish hair, a smattering of freckles under his green eyes, and often a bit of scruff.

Personality:
S'vesi is easy to be intimidated by: between his size, his scars, and his tendency to not speak unless spoken to, he comes off quite serious and formidable indeed. But while he certainly can be those things, there is a good, soft heart to be found inside this mountain of a man. Some of the reason for his quiet is that he harbors some social anxiety, partly out of natural inclination and partly due to a life spent sticking out like a sore thumb (at least before coming to the Weyr, which seems to be a gathering place for very large individuals). Throughout his life, most people have assumed that he is all brawn and no brain, and while that couldn't be farther from the truth, he has taken it to heart and has a low opinion of his own intelligence when in reality, he simply lacked much in the way of education. Regardless, he contented himself with the role of dumb muscle, and has never complained, even if that has been to his detriment. It's extremely rare for a complaint to pass his lips, or for that matter even enter his mind with any seriousness; given that his self-worth is so lacking, he is that much more inclined to simply suffer through things with little more than a shrug.

While not so unintelligent as he believes himself to be, he is a simple soul, and as long as he feels like he has a purpose, contentment is not out of reach. He does enjoy his comforts, though, so things like a warm meal and a decent spot to sleep (especially indoors) will make him a happy man indeed. He also enjoys company, even if it takes time for him to become comfortable, and is a fast and warm friend to those who earn his trust, which isn't a difficult feat. A kind word or gesture goes a long, long way with S'vesi, to the extent that he wouldn't be difficult to manipulate or deceive, as he has a wide emotional blindspot for those he perceives to be his friends. He is a good friend to have, himself, supportive and giving and always willing to lend a hand. He has a good, amiable sense of humor, and in all is a very easy man to get along with. Not much bothers him, except for the sorts of things that would bother any decent person, like displays of cruelty or malice.

He is a romantic at heart, though not strictly in an amorous sense - he is someone who truly appreciates and enjoys the beauty of the world around him, and is easily wrapped up in a song or tale. As hard a worker as he is, he sees no shame in stopping to smell the flowers now and then. His work ethic is solid, and he will set himself to any task given him without complaint, but he knows that there is more to life than work, work, and more work. What's the point of life if you don't enjoy it, and why not pause now and then to appreciate the wonders of the world? He won't shirk or be distracted from his duties, but in his off-time, he will absolutely take actual time off rather than try to squeeze in every moment of productivity that he can. Hard worker yes, workaholic no, and without an ounce of ambition.

As unambitious and easily contented as he is, S'vesi is not generally a self-motivator: he doesn't want rank or prestige, he doesn't need to be the best at anything, he doesn't...need much at all, really, aside from a bit of direction to get him moving. He settles into schedules and expected duties well, and will jump to help someone in a heartbeat if they need it, but isn't someone who looks for more work or even does much planning.

Positive Trait List hard worker, loyal, romantic
Negative Trait List low self-worth, overly trusting, unambitious

History:
S'vesi had a fairly unremarkable upbringing: two loving parents, two older siblings, two younger siblings, and a fairly comfortable life far from the struggle of places like Nabol. His parents were farmers, themselves the children of farmers, in lands under Redoubt Hold, so he grew up working the land. It was hard work, but a good life, and he'd likely have been content to farm for the rest of his days, had he not caught the eye of someone from the Fighter Hall. He was a big lad who was clearly only going to get bigger, and a fair prospect for that sort of work...and he had always been rather enchanted by tales of adventure, and been an eager spectator at tourneys.

Once apprenticed, he took to the work well, as he did to all work. With a purpose and clear expectations, he learned quickly and easily, and would eventually go on to become a Mercenary, mostly because he liked the idea of travelling. It was work that, of course, earned him his fair share of scars, but he didn't mind. Still, he didn't expect to do it forever, expecting to one day in the future - another ten, twenty Turns maybe - find a sweet lady, settle down and return to his farming roots and raise a family. A simple dream, but one he thought of often.

Long before that could happen, though, something most unexpected did: he was singled out by a Search dragon, who would take him to High Reaches Weyr to stand for an impending clutch. Three days later, the dragonets broke shell, among them an awkward green who encountered some trouble extricating herself from her shell. She took her time an eventually managed to free herself, and set off among the Candidates with no fanfare, only the occasional polite-but-friendly honk as she passed by, nosing fondly here and there at those she remembered from the Touching. She was perhaps halfway through her journey when she ran out of steam and had to call it quits. Sitting down with a sigh right in the midst of the crowd, she reached with her mind to call to the one she knew was Hers.

Not to be a bother, Sivesi, but might you come to your Hirondelleth? I'm very tired, and it's still a long way to you and then to the food.

It wasn't a bother at all, of course, and the man didn't hesitate to go right to her and scoop her up so that she didn't have to walk any farther. He carried her quite a lot, in fact, for as long as he could, which wasn't nearly long enough for either of them. They went on to a quite unremarkable weyrlinghood, consistently in the middle of the pack in their trajectory and achievements, and were fortunate to be only lightly marked by their Blooding.

Other:

The Dragon

Origin of Name: from Hirondelle, dam of prominent sire Quebec. When a genetic study of the Poitevin was done in 1994, a genetic bottleneck was revealed: the entire modern population of the breed traced back to Quebec, who was foaled in 1960.

Inspiration:
The Poitevin, a breed of horse developed in the seventeenth century in west-central France when horses of Flemish or Dutch origin, brought to the area by engineers working to drain the Marais Poitevin, interbred with local horses. Although it has the size and conformation of a draft horse, the Poitevin has never been bred for draft abilities, and has been little used for draft work. Its principal traditional use was the production of mules. Poitevin mares were put to jacks of the large Baudet du Poitou breed of donkey; the resulting Poitevin mules were in demand for agricultural and other work in many parts of the world. In the early twentieth century there were some 50,000 brood mares producing between 18,000 and 20,000 mules per year.

With the collapse of the mule-breeding industry in the first half of the twentieth century, the breed fell out of favor and the population dropped precipitously. Though conservation efforts have been underway, it remains an endangered breed, with just over 300 breeding animals in existence in 2011.

They are a slow-growing, heavy-boned breed that can be found in any solid color, including striped dun, which occurs in no other French drafts. Although the Poitevin has the size and conformation of a draft horse, it has never been bred for draft abilities, and has been little used for draft work. The Poitevin may be ridden, or driven in harness, both in competition and for pleasure; it is suitable for equine therapy. It has occasionally been used for light agricultural work in vineyards, in movies; as a mount for forest monitors, harnessed for urban work, and for the collection of waste. It may also be used for vegetation management: in 1994 the departmental council of Ille-et-Vilaine bought a herd for maintenance of marshlands in the area.

Personality:
It's quite clear from her appearance that Hirondelleth is a hardy dragon: she's a healthy girl, no doubt about it, with a good appetite and a fairly healthy outlook on life as well. She is mentally resilient in a very good-natured, optimistic way - while far from physically energetic, she always looks on the bright side of life, and has no trouble finding a silver lining to most anything that befalls her. She is an all-around calm and agreeable dragon not given to dramatics of any kind, content to go with the flow of life and be just another green. It's really not such a bad thing to be - after all, it means no one expects much out of her, and that's more than fine by her!

Hirondelleth is, shall we say, rather on the lethargic side. It's not that she can't work, or thinks herself above work, but that she moves at her own pace, and that pace is slower than most. Attempts to harry her into speeding up or pulling any more weight than she absolutely must will be ineffective at best, and cause her to dig her heels in at worst. This is a dragon who will need to be cajoled just so if she is to put in her best effort, her better nature prevailed upon to keep her working from day to day to day without losing all steam and motivation.

Fortunately, she is a 'people person,' and her fondness for others, both dragon and human, can easily be leveraged to keep her on task and doing her duty by fighting Thread. Really, fighting Thread in and of itself isn't the problem - it's all the practices and drills and sweeps and the work that's required between Falls that wears on her. Still, with a little gentle pressure and lots of positive reinforcement from Hers, she will be a fair enough wingdragon, though never the type to push her limits. She knows when enough is enough, and will not hesitate to bow out if circumstances get the better of her...or even a bit before they do. Hirondelleth may be built to take a hit, but that doesn't mean she likes when she has to do so, and won't hesitate to ask to go to the healers. It's just as well she was hatched at High Reaches, as she has zero desire for any sort of rank or renown, or even recognition by her peers.

Getting any of that would just be...so much effort. She would much rather doze in a soft field of wildflowers with Hers, preferably on a full stomach.

Positive Traits: optimistic, calm, sociable
Negative Traits: lethargic, stubborn, underachieving

NPC Egg: small

Adult Size: medium-large
Physical Attributes: Long of body, with strong, thick legs as well as powerful shoulders and hindquarters, Hirondelleth is insulated by a soft layer of chonk that is partly her build and partly an inclination toward laziness. Her feet are large and broad, her tail is longer and thicker than average, as are her neck- and tailridges, and she is also possessed of a long, thick neck and headknobs. In comparison to the rest of her, her wings seem short and small, though the muscles are thick and powerful, and so they still do the job of carrying her in the air. She was painfully awkward-looking as a hatchling and adolescent, but has finally matured into her build.

Additional Notes:
Though she may look like a powerhouse, Hirondelleth burns herself out quickly; this green has very little staying power, and even the half a Threadfall asked of her color will leave her absolutely exhausted. Her Flights will be short affairs, likely won by whoever is able to snatch her when she reaches the point where can fly no farther, rather than being much influenced by her own preferences.

Romantically, Hirondelleth does prefer males, though she has no eye for any particular hide, and is easily won over by sweet words or, better still, a gift of something delicious. Her hearts are easy to capture, so she may well be in for heartbreak if a beau proves untrue, but she will hold no grudge. It is, after all, hardly a surprise if they are drawn to someone prettier or shinier than she.

Impression Effect:
Sivesi will no longer be so inherently intimidating, as Hirondelleth will lend him an aura of warmth that renders him far more approachable: the warm and gentle man he always was on the inside will be much more apparent than it once was. He will also find himself with a bit of the magnetism dragonriders are often noted for, though not in excess.

Why Me?
Who else for Hirondelleth? While she needs someone who can help her appreciate and put in hard work when it's needed, a workaholic would have been far too much of a stretch for her. Sivesi, on the other hand, is just right, able to provide gentle encouragement rather than trying to push her too hard or too far, or to be something she isn't (and doesn't want to be). He will love her just as she is, in all her chonk and laziness, adore every inch of her slightly odd proportions, and spoil her with all the love he can give. In his eyes and heart, she is the prettiest and most perfect of green princesses, and there is nothing he wouldn't do for her. She will love him just as hard in return, and together they will be content, go-with-the-flow peas in a pod.

The Rider

Name: Arasetra
Age: 23
Nameday:
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: ??
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Runner
Physical Description: With a leggy, athletic build, Arasetra is almost-but-not-quite tall at 5"10," with dark auburn hair and medium-purple eyes, as well as well-tanned skin from spending most of her time outdoors.

Personality:
Arasetra has always been something of a wild child, curious about everything and fearless when it comes to satisfying that curiosity. If she wants to know what's over that ridge or up that tree, she doesn't think twice about finding out for herself - in fact, she hardly thinks about it at all. She just goes, and doesn't understand why there might be fuss about her doing so. Something bad could happen, you say? Theoretically, perhaps, but Arasetra blithely assumes that said bad thing(s) won't happen to her. She's got this! It's fine! Though there were times when it was, in fact, not fine, she fortunately avoided permanent damage over the course of her youthful explorations. She has some fairly minor scarring here and there, and once broke her arm falling out of a tree when she was 7, but that's all done very little to dampen her enthusiasm for exploration and thrills.

She loves people just as much as she loves adventure, and is persistently cheerful and, at times, overly friendly. She's perfectly happy talk anyone's ear off about anything, or have hers talked off in turn. She can be a bit brazen about invading personal space, though if someone makes it plain that they would prefer for her to back off, she will do so without any fuss or hurt feelings. Arasetra isn't totally oblivious, after all, and knows well that everyone is different and has their own preferences and boundaries, so once someone tells her not to push their physical boundaries in such a way, she will respect it. When it comes to non-physical boundaries, though...that's a little harder, thanks to her rampant curiosity. She wants to know everything, and if she realizes there's something someone doesn't want her to know, she'll have trouble leaving it alone. She has enough tact that she won't just hammer away at it, but she will definitely look for ways to discover what's being withheld. It may take time and strategy, but will be intent on finding out sooner or later.

While she respects personal boundaries, she has a harder time with what she considers more arbitrary boundaries, like restrictions on what she can and can't do or say. If a rule is explained and makes obvious sense - 'no smooches for six months or you might kill your dragon' - that's fine, but it's just as well she didn't have a conservative upbringing that tried to restrict her freedoms, or she'd surely have rebelled. Arasetra doesn't take well to being told how or who she ought to be, and will balk at attempts to contain her (outside of reasonable bounds - she does understand the life she accepted by becoming a Candidate). Fortunately for her and Sufridoth both, she's not particularly ambitious, or she'd be clamoring to know why they're not eligible for the higher ranks of the Weyr. Oh, she disagrees on principle, but doesn't have a genuine desire to take on that sort of responsibility. She is, above all, a free spirit, and achieving and holding rank would put a serious damper on her fun.

Positive Trait List energetic, curious, friendly
Negative Trait List devil-may-care, nosy, willful

History:
One of many children of a Runner and a Trader, it's entirely possible Arasetra isn't actually the biological child of said Trader, but neither he nor anyone else in the family cares about it. She grew up on the move, and was both well-suited to and happy with such a life, though there were certainly some risky misadventures along the way, which came as no real surprise to anyone, as she was quite a wild and willful child. Nothing left any long-lasting damage, and when she was old enough, she opted to follow in her mother's footsteps and apprentice as a Runner. It was a good, productive use of her energy, physical abilities, and her inclination to explore. Not that she could go anywhere and everywhere she pleased, with timely deliveries to make, but it scratched her itches well enough. She became a Journeyman at 19, and though the return of Thread made her chosen craft a good bit riskier than it had been, she was undaunted.

She bounced from assignment to assignment for a few Turns before, on a stop at High Reaches Hold, she found herself Searched to the Weyr. She'd never thought about dragons overmuch, though she'd certainly seen her fair share, but...why not? If nothing else, it would be an interesting little adventure, even if nothing more came of it. A mere sevenday later, she stood for her first and last Hatching - while his siblings busied themselves with displays and scuffles, a no-nonsense fellow split his shell and got immediately to the business of finding His. He practically made a beeline for Arasetra, butting his head against her snorting. If it's all the same to you, Arasetra, your Sufridoth is quite done here. I am ready to get on with things.

He was quite the surprise - and at times a pain in the a**, with his stubborn tendency to push himself too far, but she could be obstinate too, and learned how to mitigate him and minimize the harm he might otherwise cause himself. They suffered no serious injuries over the course of their weyrlinghood, though Sufridoth did overstrain his wings during their Blooding. No lasting damage was done, and it's possible he learned a lesson.

The Dragon

Origin of Name: from Sufridor, a Criollo gelding offered to Louis Bruhnke and Vladimir Fissenko for a journey from Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego to the shores of the Arctic Ocean in Deadhorse, Alaska. The ride took five and a half years to complete, and while other horses died along the way, Sufridor persevered and accompanied them from start to finish.

Inspiration:
The Criollo (in Spanish), or Crioulo (in Portuguese), is the native horse of the Pampas (a natural region between Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, in South America) with a reputation for long-distance endurance linked to a low basal metabolism. The breed, known for its hardiness and stamina, is popular in its home countries.
Criollo horses average 14.3 hands high, and the line-backed dun is the most popular color, but the breed may also come in bay, brown, black, chestnut, grullo, buckskin, palomino, blue or strawberry roan, gray and overo/sabino colors.

The breed dates back to a 1535 shipment of 100 Pure Bred Spaniards – Andalusian stallions coming from Cadiz, Spain, to the Rio de la Plata imported by Buenos Aires founder, Pedro de Mendoza. In 1540, the hostility of the native populace forced the Spaniards to abandon Buenos Aires and release 12 to 45 horses. When Buenos Aires was resettled in 1580, it is estimated that the feral horse population numbered around 12,000. Since they largely reproduced in the wild, the criollo developed into an extremely hardy horse capable to survive the extreme heat and cold, subsist with little water, and live off the dry grasses of the area. Settlers later came and started capturing horses for riding and for use as pack animals, which Native Americans had already been doing for many years before. Throughout the 19th century a large proportion of the horses were crossed with imported European Thoroughbred, coach and draft horse stallions, and a larger, coarser, long striding multi-purpose, saddle cart horse resulted. However, the crossbreeding nearly ruined the native Spanish horse type. In 1918, the Argentine breeders decided to create a pure-bred criollos registry, and the breeder's association was then formed in 1923. Much infighting occurred between the bands of Emilio Solanet and Enrique Crotto. The first promoted the Asian type crioulo and the latter the taller African type with a coarse convex head, fallen croup, thinner mane and tail.

It was not until 1934 that Dr. Solanet was able to firmly take control of the breeders association. He set a new goal for the breed with a shorter, more compact stock horse which emulated the Chilean Horse breed that he admired so much. In 1938, 70% of the registered crioulos were culled because they did not possess the phenotype aspired by Dr. Solanet and his followers. The new breed standard, about which he had written in 1928, was finally made available to the public once he was assured that the breeders were more united in their breed objectives. It would not be until 1957 that the registry was closed for Argentine native breeds, but the registry has remained open for the Chilean Horse breed that has been so influential in giving shape to the crioulo as a better stock horse. Nevertheless, the breed maintains its own identity in a taller, leggier and squarer body conformation with a more angular hock that gives it the long stride it requires to cover the great distances in the flat Argentine plains known as "Pampas". The modern crioulo head has a straight facial profile and a shorter muzzle with longer ears than is typical in the Chilean Horse breed.

Personality:
Sufridoth is a workhorse if ever there was one, ever able and willing to do what is asked of him. No matter how difficult the task, no matter how trying the journey, he will put his head down and carry on until he's seen it through, even if exhausted or in pain. Whatever the circumstances, Sufridoth will endure. He is built for endurance, both physical and mental, and can weather nearly any trial he finds himself presented with and come out the other side all the stronger for it. His greatest strength, however, can be his greatest weakness: he will work himself to the bone, and would sooner drop out of the sky than admit he needs a break, let alone admit defeat. Without a rider who has a will to match or eclipse his, he would likely become a liability to his wingmates, or meet an especially early end, by refusing to listen to the needs of his body and leave the fight during 'Fall, no matter how grave his injuries or deep his exhaustion. This will apply in his personal life, as well - once he sets his mind to something, it will be difficult to change his chosen course.

Outside of his inability see his own limitations, Sufridoth is a sensible dragon with an eye for solutions to problems. While he may be blind to his own struggles - for indeed, he does not see himself as having struggles at all - he has a knack for understanding the struggles of others, and will readily give support and encouragement...even if it's not been asked for. He's practically incapable of minding his own business, and justifies it as being for the health of the team. They're all in this together, after all, and personal turmoil can have ripple effects, leading to distraction and worse. While all too willing to give advice, however, he will have trouble accepting any himself. Even if he were to admit to himself that he had a problem of some kind, he'd still be absolutely loathe to admit it to another. Sufridoth is never anything less than fine, no matter how many wounds he is bleeding from or how many pieces his hearts has just shattered into.

So long as he judges that he and his fellows are being treated fairly, Sufridoth will exist well within the hierarchy of High Reaches. He will acknowledge and empathize with those who crave more and wish to reach higher, but has no desire to rock the boat himself. He is happy as a workhorse, with no inate desire to lead, and as long as he doesn't feel he's being mistreated or put down, he has no complaint. That said, if he does feel that way - or sees that another is being treated unfairly - he will not hesitate to make it known and put his foot down about the matter. Traditional roles are all well and good, but disparagement or abuses are not. They are each vital to the fight against Thread, they each risk life and limb for it, and they should therefore respect each other, not tear each other down.

Positive Traits: enduring, supportive, fair-minded
Negative Traits: stubborn, meddlesome, guarded

NPC Egg: medium

Adult Size: Medium
Physical Attributes:
Average in overall size for his color, but brawny and strongly-built. His chest is broad, his haunches and shoulders especially well-muscled, with legs just a tad shorter than average. He is unmistakably a sound, hardy dragon, built favorably for both endurance and precise maneuvers.

Additional Notes:
Sufridoth will never be at risk for overeating; he knows exactly how much he needs to sustain himself, and will not consume more than that. He's not picky, either, and will neither turn up his nose at tough fare nor crave a delicacy. Food is food. When it comes to Flights, he has no color preference, but once he finds love, he will be utterly devoted and never stray from them.

Impression Effect:
Arasetra will gain more sense of personal responsibility, and may actually take half a second before she leaps into doing something. Sufridoth will also loan her the charm inherent to dragonriders, which may help to smooth over some of her nosiness, and even at her wildest-looking, she will be beautiful.

Why Me?
Different as they are, the workhorse and the free spirit, Sufridoth and Arasetra are both go, go, go! Whatever they're doing, they'll be able to keep up with each other, and Sufridoth appreciates that Arasetra doesn't let anything hold her back. She also doesn't let anything get her down, and he could use that dose of good cheer and sense of fun to keep him from being all serious, all the time, to the exclusion of everything else. And while she's not generally one for limitations, when she recognizes that her bonded is pushing himself too far, her will is strong enough to match his, and she'll be able to back him down. In turn, Sufridoth will tie her down, and may in time be able to settle her just a bit.

Yee-Haw! Let's Ride!

This Profile Is Elibile for ALL Colors -- bronze, brown, blue and green!
Color Preference Bronze, brown, blue, green

The Rider

Name: W'chir (Whelochir)
Age: 22
Nameday: 3555.01.28
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: ????
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Fighter (Mercenary/Guard)
Physical Description: W'chir stands a solid 6'5" and is best summed up as broad. He might not tower over some like others in High Reaches Weyr, but there's no doubt he's a formidable and large man relative to the majority of Pern. He has broad shoulders, chest, and large arms and legs, each covered in muscle. His dark brown hair is medium in length, falling down to his shoulders--but it's often braided and tied up, as well as shaved in various parts per the Fighterhall traditions.

Personality: W'chir is, perhaps, everything a rider should be. Much of the things which intrigued him in the Fighterhall mimics what he has learned to be in becoming a dragonrider. Getting to be a hero, and help to save the day, and keep the people of Pern safe, is something he absolutely adores. While he is more at risk now that he's facing Thread than when he guarded various Holds and Halls, or escorted someone of importance from one place to another, W'chir is utterly fearless. He would rather go down saving someone than play it safe while another suffers the consequence. This can mean he gets himself into trouble; he is known to take risks without thinking things through. He can put himself or his dragon at risk if he thinks the result might better one of his wingmates or someone he feels the need to protect. Only too quickly can his fearlessness turn into foolishness.

He is certainly a protective man, and s more than happy to do whatever he can to ensure someone (or many someone's) are safe. This means he is very good around littles and Uncles and Aunties, or those who might need some looking after. Strangers can trust that W'chir means them no harm, and it's true; he would never dream of hurting someone and to those who know him best, he's a veritable gentle giant.

But that gentleness stops when hard choices have to be made, or when faced with someone he doesn't believe deserves his mercy or forgiveness. When set on a task, or given orders to follow, W'chir tends to follow them to the letter. He sees the world through black-and-white and rarely allows room for change. It isn't that he follows without thought, but there is a chain of command, and W'chir knows (or at least believes) that his superiors have their best interest in heart. Perhaps he's foolish in believing so, but he is a product of his society to the letter. Surely, a dragon would not Impress someone who was not worthy of the name just as surely he believed his Masters in the Fighters Hall were there to use their Might for Right. He is a follower, and doesn't often stop to question whether or not what he's been told to do is the right course of action, or that someone might have ulterior motives.

While this can make him dependable--he follows orders and falls into line easily. A wingmate might never find him shirking duty, and if ever they need aid, they know to simply say the word. But he is also known to be a bit naive concerning how the the world works. He was never thought to think critically, and this has meant he is easily used. This is less a problem in the Weyr, especially with his dragon at his side--but his naivety can cause him problems. Worse, even when wronged, W'chir can usually talk himself out of holding a grudge or mistrust. Depending on the infraction in question, or the situation, he might well continue to get burned, believing full well that good-will-conquer-all.

It's very clear that W'chir has much to learn.

Positive Trait List Dependable, Fearless, Protective
Negative Trait List Follower, Naive, Risk-Taker

History: Whelochir was born and raised in Redoubt Hold. He comes from a long line of proud mercenaries and guards, with many of his family following the craft. While he wasn't raised in the Fighters Hall, with his mother a Journeyman Healer stationed long-term at Redoubt Hold and his father a Master Guard at the very Hall itself, he grew up quite familiar with the Hall and its people.

Being a middle child of a brood of seven meant Whelochir learned quickly to fall into line. His temperament meant he made an ideal second-in-command when enforcing his families and Hold rules; but his dependability meant he was often tapped to keep an eye on his younger siblings to get them out of trouble.

Overall, his family life was quiet and not particularly far from ordinary. His parents loved their family but were firm; with his father a Master at the local Hall, and his older siblings eventually following suit, Whelochir grew comfortable at the Hall. His father made sure his children knew how to handle a sword and defend themselves well before it came time to pick up a craft. While they would have supported Whelochir's desire to choose any craft, there was an unspoken expectation that he would follow in the family craft.

Thankfully, Whelochir didn't mind and at Turn 11 was officially brought on as an apprentice for the Fighterhall.

With a focus and hope to become a seasoned guard at one of Pern's major Holds, Whelochir dove happily into his studies. He was an eager student, and wanted nothing more than to please his Masters and get ahead in life. At the end of the day, he wanted to be a hero and save the day, to really help Pern and its people.

At Turn 17, he was given his chance. Thread returned, much to the surprise of the world. While the mountains of Redoubt meant many in the Hold and Hall were safe, the losses were still severe -- and surrounding Holds and Halls weren't near as lucky. It was there that Whelochir was sent out with other groups to help rebuild, cleanup, and guard any families and goods from being raided or stolen during the days of chaos and mourning.

At Turn 19 he was finally allowed to walk the tables, becoming a Journeyman. His first assignment was over at High Reaches Hold, helping to keep an eye on some of the borders closest to Nabol, and generally do whatever task his superiors gave him. It wasnt necessarily glory filled -- but Wehlochir was always known to be a reliable grunt; not every thread in a tapestry was noticed, but each individual thread was needed to make the piece whole.

Not quite a Turn later, he was approached by a blue rider who informed him he'd been found on Search for Zenobiath's clutch. It practically knocked him flat. He almost turned them down, but the idea of guarding and protecting Pern in another way appealed to him. Even if he didn't Impress it would be quite an experience and he always had a place as a Journeyman. So, he accepted, and was shortly brought to High Reaches Weyr.

Much to his surprise, he found a sleek dragonet moving right toward him about half-way through the affair. His destiny, his new destiny, had finally been found--and W'chir was forever a changed man.

The Dragon

Dragon Name: Natchnith
]Origin of Name: Within the Marwari horse breed was a strain known as the Natchni, believed by local people to be "born to dance". Decorated in silver, jewels, and bells, these horses were trained to perform complex prancing and leaping movements at many ceremonies, including weddings. Although the Natchni strain is extinct today, horses trained in those skills are still in demand in rural India.
Inspiration: Marwari

The Marwari or Malani is a rare breed of horse from the Marwar (or Jodhpur) region of Rajasthan, in north-west India. It is closely related to the Kathiawari breed of the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat, with which it shares an unusual inward-curving shape of the ears. It is found in all equine colours, including piebald and skewbald. It is a hardy riding horse; it may exhibit a natural ambling gait.

The Rathores, traditional rulers of the Marwar region of western India, were the first to breed the Marwari. Beginning in the 12th century, they espoused strict breeding that promoted purity and hardiness. Used throughout history as a cavalry horse by the people of the Marwar region, the Marwari was noted for its loyalty and bravery in battle. The breed deteriorated in the 1930s, when poor management practices resulted in a reduction of the breeding stock, but today has regained some of its popularity. The Marwari is used for light draught and agricultural work, as well as riding and packing. In 1995, a breed society was formed for the Marwari horse in India. The exportation of Marwari horses was banned for decades, but between 2000 and 2006, a small number of exports were allowed. Since 2008, visas allowing temporary travel of Marwari horses outside India have been available in small numbers. Though they are rare they are becoming more popular outside of India due to their unique looks.

Personality: Natchnith is a dragon built for battle, though one might not believe it. While this dragon is on the smaller and more dainty size for their color, they were hatched to fight. In terms of Threadfall, Natchnith is not afraid to throw his/her everything at the battle--no matter the result. In terms of the fight itself, Natchnith is a brave dragon, unafraid of injury or scarring, and ready to support (or lead) their wingmates during the fray. No matter how poorly conditions deterorate; no matter what goes wrong, this dragon will not shirk duty.

Additionally, Natchnith is a loyal dragon, and while his/her rider will always come first, High Reaches and the Weyr will come second. Be it wingmate, clutchmate, or weyrmate this dragon is very proud of his/her Weyr and expects other dragons to follow suit. Of course, Natchnith's loyalty isn't reserved just for the pride of High Reaches, but for friends, lovers, and those nearest to his/her hearts. Once a friend, always a friend, as far as Natchnith is concerned--Faranth forbid anyone ever betray this dragon's trust.

Unfortunately, Natchnith's loyal views aren't shared with everyone in the Weyr; nor are all the dragon's at High Reaches as gung-ho and eager to show up for Drills and throw themselves blindly into battle. Natchnith has no patience for such fools, and can be quite demanding that others fall into line and follow suit. This dragon cannot stand those who are untrue, and will not hesitate to boss, if not downright bully, others into changing their worldview. This dragon can be a bit demanding--even of his/her own rider. Paired with a natural finicky nature, Natchnith can be near impossible to please until everything is just so. From demanding only the choicest cuts of meat, to desiring riding leathers dyed a certain shade, or W'chir to dress just so for a Gather, Natchnith is known to be quite opinionated--and bossy. If this dragon isn't careful, he/she will find him/herself with few friends, indeed.

Thankfully, there is a natural grace and charm within Natchnith that might soften the offense of his/her uglier sides. This dragon can be as graceful in the air as he/she can be on land; and the turn of phrase he/she uses will help sooth over any slights or insults--hopefully. Rest assured, Natchnith is more than happy to deflect and distract when tensions start to rise; he/she is well aware they are a lovely sight to behold, and have confidence enough to try to use it to his/her best advantage. This can turn them into a bit of a show-off, stretching wings out here, or preening as a certain bronze or brown trots by. Worse, this desire to prance and dance, especially while on wing, can cause distraction but can also pull them well out of formation. Yes, for all Natchnith loves battle, it's clear this dragon also wants to fight the good fight with a little style. If W'chir doesn't keep Natchnith focused, particularly when there are quiet moments during Fall, this dragon might well allow style and flash get in the way of duty--and inadvertantly cause needless injury to themselves or their wingmates.

Positive Traits: Brave, Loyal, Elegant
Negative Traits: Finicky, Demanding, Showy

NPC Egg:] Small

Adult Size: Small
physical Attributes: Natchnith is a slim dragon and will never be large for its color. Natchnith has a long neck, long tail, and delicate boned frame, at least compared to other dragons of its color. Thankfully, Natchnith doesn't mind. He/She knows he/she makes an elegant dispay while in the air. Thankfully, Natchnith is hardy for all that he/she is trim; his/her stamina is surprising and while they might not be able to take a battering of Pern's strongest winds easily, they know how to fly with grace. Perhaps most noticeable about Natchnith is his/her headknobs and how they are known to curve in.

Additional Notes: Natchnith will always be on the trim side, and tends to be a light eater. He/She doesn't undereat, mind, but is particular about what types of food he/she's in at the moment. Only the choicest of cuts will do, mind.

When it comes to flights, Natchnith is a natural performer. He/She will love to take to the skies and will have almost as much fun simply showing off as he/she will be on the outcome. Natchnith will certainly take wing often though rest assured, they are not desperate and will be particular about whom they twine neck and tails with. Not just anyone will do, thank you, and if you are so chosen, you had better well know exactly who you are signing yourself up to be with.

Impression Effect: Natchnith's elegance will certainly give W'chir a boost when it comes to the looks department. He might have been comely to start, but Natchnith will ensure he has that oomph that separates a rider from any ordinary Pernese. Additionally, Natchnith will give W'chir new direction and focus; they are to save Pern, and as many people, be it wingmates, or the people of Pern, as possible.

Why Me? Natchnith chose W'chir because they were perfect for one another. This dragon could never see itself with anyone who wasn't as heroic as it, and W'chir checks all the boxes: good, brave, dependable, protective. On the surface, this pair is a natural fit, with one another complimenting and highlighting the others heroic personas. They are both fearless and brave, and neither will find the other objecting to drills or embracing the duty of dragonriding. Natchnith's loyalty will air well with W'chir's earnest desire to do and be good, allowing them to rise up to be a well-regarded fighting pair.

But dig a little deeper, and they will find that they complement one another's weaknesses as well. You can guarantee that W'chir's protective nature, as well as his dependability, mean he will keep Natchnith's flash-and-pizazz in check. He won't let the dragon get needlessly injured, so the risk, while not lost entirely, is at least mitigated. Both dragon and rider will be prone to injury during their rest days--when W'chir might be prone to taking more risks and Natchnith interested in showing off his/her skills. Where W'chir can be naïve, or unable to see when he might be used, you can bet Natchnith won't allow him to be hurt twice. For while W'chir can give multiple chances, Natchnith is fussy enough--and demanding enough--to object.

Gotta Rein This In!

This profile has some restrictions!
Eligible For: Chromatic Only
Color Preference: Green, Brown

The Rider

Name: Vahl'en
Age: 17
Nameday: 3560.01.11
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Exploring
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Weyrbrat
Physical Description: Vahl'en is in that awkward stage of growing where it's clear he's still going to spring up like a weed - but it isn't so clear if he's going to remain as twiggy as he currently looks. He has his mother's red hair and amber eyes with an absolute peppering of freckles.
Personality: Vahl’en is evidence aplenty that his great grandmother, Viren’s, fiery spirit may just like skipping a generation. Where his mother, Valehrie, is fiery and full of spirit, Vahl’en is barely what one would consider to be adventurous and is in fact a healthy heaping scoop of homebody - he has almost little interest in what happens in the world outside of the little bubble that is his home, and in fact can seem awfully unsympathetic about it. He’s certainly not lining up people to see them suffer, but he can tend to take people’s woe with more than a tiny pinch of salt - mostly in the wake of Dragonriders being blamed for the suffering of people outside of the Weyrs. He’s proud of his home for having been prepared, so why aren’t they doing more to help themselves if they have the energy to deflect blame?

Big bombastic shows simply aren’t Vahl’en’s thing, preferring quieter things. He has no desire to be a leader of any sort, nor to stand out as a hero. Instead, he finds appeal in finding the smaller things that nobody wants to do, yet still desperately need doing. Dirty chores? He doesn’t mind doing them (well, some he does - but he won’t complain since it is helping). Grinding, monotonous work? He’ll also do that. Contributing in small, meaningful places is incredibly important to him. He is proud of his home and the deep roots his family has there. Leaving it better than he found it, proverbially, is the way to go about it.

Vahl’en is a self sufficient and self motivating young man, needing little push to get going and to find things that need to be done once he has finished what is on his plate. His desire to contribute, however, make him unwilling to ask for help in doing things - not out of pride, but out of inconvenience. He’d rather waste away his day on a frustrating task than make someone else, who may simply have more important things they could be doing, take time away to explain for him. The lost time is learning time as far as he’s concerned - not taking into account how much more could get done if he didn’t stress about burdening others.

Positive Trait List Humble, Hardworking, Self-sufficient
Negative Trait List Homebody, Unsympathetic, DESPERATELY Self-sufficient
History: Vahlaryen was born like many kids in the creche as the result of a flight - though he was born into a fairly large and established family of High Reaches Riders and had a cousin born within a few weeks of him to bond with as a sibling - as he would many of his other cousins. The communal ‘whole’ was important from the start, though nobody ever burdened him with it, and being well loved nurtured the desire to give back. Whether that was keeping an eye out on the younger kids while the adults were busy, or staying longer in the kitchens to help with particularly large meals, he was happy to help - and he looked up to each adult as a role model of their own sort.

Life was good, IS good, mostly made of the sort of childhood tensions one could expect from any developing young person, and he mostly got along as well with everybody as they would let him. Having a mother as willing to fight all of his enemies could have been a contributing factor, but he was fairly good at navigating such stresses himself without her.

But Thread, turns and turns absent, lingered and impressed upon him the importance of everybody’s hard work, almost like a sore tooth. It didn’t bring him anxiety, but watered his deep roots of pride and hopefulness for his own future. That he’d still be too young to Stand before any clutch of dragons when it returned was a great insult - but that he’d be around to do his part buoyed his resolve. Resolve that would be tested as he was turned away his first and even second times on the sands. He was committed to wait, but it wouldn’t be a long struggle before they finally did.

There. I found you, Vahlaryen - that was easy. Now I believe food is around that bend there? Come, your Ghengith would like to eat before either of us have to worry much about the rest of it. You’ll eat soon, yes? Yes. The sooner we all handle our matters here, the sooner you can eat too. So hopefully they will not leave you waiting long.

They impressed without fanfare, without any flourish or pomp, but the love from the little baby was plain in the little things the young man coveted so. Ghengith would patiently nurture his little cares over the next year, and shoulder his sadnesses when they came, so that they could fly together against the great enemy. Something that they both needed to do, deep in their bones.
Other: Son of Valehrie, Great-Grandson of Virens

The Dragon

Origin of Name: Genghith takes their name from the Warlord most well known for riding the Mongol Horse - Genghis Khan.
Inspiration:Mongol Horse - The Mongol horse is the native horse breed of Mongolia. The breed is purported to be largely unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan. Nomads living in the traditional Mongol fashion still hold more than 3 million animals, which outnumber the country's human population. In Mongolia, the horses live outdoors all year, dealing with temperatures from 30 °C (86 °F) in summer down to −40 °C (−40 °F) in winter, and they graze and search for food on their own. The mare's milk is processed into the national beverage airag. Some animals are slaughtered for meat. Other than that, they serve as riding and transport animals; they are used both for the daily work of the nomads and in horse racing.

Mongol horses were a key factor supporting the 13th-century conquests of the Mongol Empire.Mongol horses are best known for their role as the war steeds of Genghis Khan. The Mongol soldier relied on his horses to provide him with food, drink, transportation, armor, shoes, ornamentation, bowstring, rope, fire, sport, music, hunting, entertainment, spiritual power, and in case of his death, a mount to ride in the afterlife.
Personality: Ghengith is an incredibly independent and free spirit, seeing home as less of a place and more of a state of mind - they may have been shelled by High Reaches dragons and raised upon its soil, but their home is where their rider is first and foremost. They have no meaningful desire to stray away from the place of their birth, however. Where this struggle truly comes into play is against their incredibly self sufficient nature - they would rather fend for themselves than ask another for their (incredibly few) needs. An outing with their rider won't have them longing for their ledge in particular, but any place with fellow dragons and a bite to eat. Truly, Ghengith could move from group to group with little issue and in a time before Thread they would have perhaps wandered away to seek out their hearts desires and simply forgotten to return.

That said, they have no desire to buck tradition or shy away from their duty. Not only is Ghengith a warrior, but they are a fierce and unshakeable one. They will ride into battle with every expectation to not return and face it without fear or trepidation. Unfortunately this can be one of the worst things about them - rather than reassurances that things will go well they are more likely to upset their fellows with their bleak realism.

At heart and at needs, Ghengith is an incredibly low maintenance dragon - they are not particular about their food or straps or even their hide as long as they all meet the bare minimum. Not hungry or itchy or having a rider thrown from their back? They're content. They are very good with children and fresh candidates who have never handled a dragon before, with a deep wellspring of patience and little inclination to complain. This can be a frustrating facet of Ghengith, however, as they aren't inclined to speak up when they should. If they have been left wanting or neglected, they will seek to fix it themselves rather than tell the offender of their shortcoming. They aren't looking to be walked over, nor would they ever allow it, but they aren't inclined towards sharing strong opinions or complaints, allowing bad habits to fester.

Positive Traits: Self Sufficient, Low Maintenance, Steady
Negative Traits: Wandering, Bleak, Enabling

NPC Egg: Small

Adult Size: Small
Physical Attributes: Genghith is a stout dragon with a strong, but not overly muscular, build. In fact, while they will never be called fat, it will be obvious when they are well fed. They have a slightly larger head than average, with shorter neck, balanced by a longer tail and their limbs give an almost squat appearance. For their color, they tend to have more stamina and speed, than speed or dexterity.

Additional Notes: Genghith's nature makes them well disposed towards Searchriding.

While Ghengith isn’t so picky as to turn their head up at the feeding pen, they do tend to enjoy wild fare when they roam away from home - and may not have mind to make sure it won’t cause trouble if they snag someone else’s livestock. This is something their rider will have to be extra mindful of.

When it comes to flights, they are a no-frill affair for Genghith. (If Green: They’ll rise three times a turn, at most, and tend to favor strong fliers, over acrobatic ones.) When it comes to romance, Ghengith may not settle easily or for the long term.

Impression Effect: Vahl'en will find his deep roots are able to spread a little farther than High Reaches and be able to look at the situations of others with more sympathy than he did previously.

Why Me? Ghengith needs a tether and there was none better than Vahl'en's deep roots. He will not be swayed to stray from his home by his dragon's wandering tendencies once they are able to fly and in turn will hopefully lured out of the safe haven of his home to see more of the world around him, knowing they will always return. Both boy and dragon are very self sufficient, but will be able to rely on each other for any loose ends that are left wanting or needing an extra mind on it. Vahl'en is ready to serve Pern and Ghengith is ready to fight with everything they are. A simple, humble dragon with a simple, humble boy - what more could either of them ask for?

Yee-Haw! Let's Ride!

This Profile Is Eligible for ALL Colors -- bronze, brown, blue and green!
Color Preference Bronze, brown, blue

The Rider

Name: M'zhir
Age: 28
Nameday: 3549.01.09
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Wouldn't you like to know? But yes.
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Harper
Specialties: Composition, Songwriting, and Dance & Defense

Physical Description: Well built and tall at 6'5", M'zhir boasts golden eyes and raven black hair. His childhood at Black Sands and training as a harper in defense have helped to define his broad shoulders and narrow waist. Rakish and hawk-nosed, with a notch or two in that very feature, M'zhir is more than aware of his handsome looks... and knows well how to use them to his best advantage.

Personality: Although M'zhir wears the façade of the effulgent harper well, beneath that sunny seeming and swagger there lies a man with a faintly macabre bend. Perhaps it is unavoidable to feel keenly the death that surrounds everyone on Pern, especially at the Weyr. Death has laid its cold fingers on the harper's life for Turns, heightened only by the arrival of Thread. Rather than turning into a grieving recluse, however, he has twisted prior pains into a droll and slightly dark sense of humor. This steeled approach to life would serve him well in a world newly baptized by the horrors of Threadfall, particularly as an up and coming rider.

Few but his closest friends know the real M'zhir, for the man wears a mask crafted through Turns of refinement. On the outside, M'zhir seems very much the customary confident yet amiable harper, ready to entertain and cajole at a moment's notice. It is only after peeling back layer after layer of his defenses that one might find the introspective, deep thinking man within. Observant and analytical, the former harper is an excellent judge of character. Particularly with Kirath's help he is able to determine, most of the time, when he is being deceived. No one is infallible, however, and though he certainly tries not to be, M'zhir has been fooled before... sometimes greatly to his detriment.

To say he holds most people at arm's length is an understatement. Although slow to trust, he is nonetheless quite good at making friends and is unafraid of doing so on a surface level. Placing his trust in others takes time and effort on his part. Still, he knows the value of working together, and is quite capable of being a team player. For all his reticence, M'zhir does not struggle with following orders or ostensibly fitting into a group. It's just that he knows the danger of forming attachments, especially in the dangerous world in which he now lives.

On a personal level, he can be deeply possessive. Not of possessions, really, so much as people. He is not exactly a jealous man, however, merely determined that those he considers 'his' will fall under his protection and care. And, most importantly, that they also know of that belonging. Admittedly, he has been slow to form such bonds, knowing how temporary they may prove to be. Those who have his trust will have it eternally, and his regard, once given, is very rarely altered. His affection can border on obsession. One pitfall he can fall into is being blind to his own fallibility, trusting his instincts a little too much. It can be difficult for M'zhir to let go once he's held onto something, rather like a canine with a bone.

Positive Trait List Deducing, brilliant, magnetic
Negative Trait List Wary, possessive, cavalier

History: As a child M'zhir grew up in the creche at Black Sands Hold. Although he didn't have any blood relatives that he knew of, he did not lack for parental figures. It was just that there were so many of them. Indeed, even a child alone could never truly be alone, with a creche full of fellows to look up to and indeed to compete with. It's fair to say that he doesn't know who his parents were, if they died, or if they simply moved on from Black Sands sometime in the nebulous past. It doesn't matter as he doesn't miss them; he had foster parents throughout his younger Turns, and a certain harper who would visit and teach the children.

The young Meyzhiral greatly admired his teacher, who opened up his eyes to music and the wonders it could bring. He would go on to attend the Western Harper Hall, forming close bonds with several of his fellows. The worst part about leaving his home, however, was leaving his best friend Tavier behind. They had been as close as blood brothers, and though he had urged Tavier to follow him, he had known that their paths would likely diverge. He had been interested in music, and Tavier had been content with entertaining at the resorts popular among the tourists of Black Sands.

Everything seemed to be progressing well, with letters sent to and from Black Sands (his own becoming more accomplished with time spent at the Hall.) However, in his twelfth Turn there came a day when there was no reply. Although he'd heard from Tavier as regularly as even mere sevendays before, it seemed that suddenly his friend had cut him off. Then, to his utter horror, he received word that Tavier had been brutally murdered. Since he had been the next of 'kin', he'd been sent the few belongings the boy had. It was a lot for the young harper apprentice to take in, and though he wrote back to the creche frequently, trying to find out what had happened, it seemed that no one quite knew.

There were few enough leads indeed, and Meyzhiral quickly developed an obsession. Haunted by the images his mind conjured of the scene, the boy could only lie awake and wonder. With his apprentice's wages, he could scarcely brush the surface of what had occurred. Slowly a plan formed, even as the boy worked diligently at his studies. His goal in mind, Meyzhiral found the pieces fell into place almost as though they had been laid out for him according to his wishes. When he reached the age of 18, he walked the tables and was drawn into the world of spying.

Little had he known that his masters had been monitoring him quite closely and were well aware of his natural inclinations. He was instructed to partner with the Courtesan Hall on a number of assignments. For a number of Turns Mezhiral worked closely with the Courtesan Hall in his (secret) capacity as spy, performing in venues where unsuspecting patrons might spill their secrets as he plunked away at his gitar. Where and when possible, the journeyman followed what leads he could, taking advantage of his relative freedom to pursue a trail that was growing more and more cold.

All of that would change when Thread returned. At twenty three Turns he narrowly escaped death himself, while witnessing the utter carnage that was unabated Threadfall. Crouched in the minimal shelter of a crumbling cothold, Mezhiral could only wonder whether he would survive, or whether he would join his patrons in being devoured by the terrifying silver rain. He had never before thought himself a coward, and never again would... yet he was helpless to act as his fellow men and women died around him. Certainly he was changed after the experience, as were many people around him.

Still, this did not stave off his obsession with discovering the truth of Tavier's death... but it did muddy the waters all the more. By this point, the trail was eleven Turns cold, and next to no one knew anything at all about the poor lad who had died so many Turns ago. Frustrated beyond measure, Mezhiral found himself sent on assignment after assignment, all too conscious both of the cooling trail and of the menace of Threadfall. When a chance encounter with a Searchrider brought him to Western Weyr, he took the opportunity to Stand at once. He had not been able to save his friend, but perhaps he could help to save others.

This burning desire did not pan out into anything more until, on his 27th nameday, he Impressed to Kirath at High Reaches Weyr. This twist of fate would change his life forever, for Kirath would not allow him to continue on his relentless course. The pain of loss and the yearning obsession to know what had befallen his old friend faded away in the wake of whirling rainbow hued eyes. With a new resolve to face their ancient foe together, the newly minted M'zhir left the Sands with his Kirath, never again to be alone.

Where Candidate lessons had been rather dull for the man, he found his stride in Weyrling lessons. With Kirath's natural likeability, it was fairly smooth sailing, but a new challenge for M'zhir. Not only was he forced to bond with his fellow weyrlings, but for the first time since his near brush with death M'zhir was faced with the reality that his and Kirath's lives would soon be on the line. Tragically, the pair would go on to lose L'ser and Spavineth, a blow which broke open anew the old wound that M'zhir had thought long since healed. Haunted by the death of their peers and clutchmates, the pair became all the more determined that to flame Thread from the sky.

Other: Has a green flit named Coda. Plays the gitar, among other instruments.

The Dragon

Origin of Name: Kirath, from Kirat, the legendary horse of Azerbaijani and Turkish origin. The father of the hero, a humble stableman, presents the skinny horse to his master Bey of Bolu, who sought to send a high quality mares to the Sultan in order to win his favor. Angered by the sight of the malnourished horse, Bey blinds the stableman. This would earn him the lasting enmity of the man's son, Rusen Ali, who would go on to become the great Köroğlu, wrath which would only be calmed when Köroğlu realizes that even were he to kill Bey of Bolu he would never be able to bring back the world into which he was born. Köroğlu was a warrior-poet to whom many stories and songs were attributed, a number of which have survived in modern folk traditions.

In some variations of the legend, Köroğlu's father Yusuf was presented with a vision of the Aras river, whose waters would briefly contain the ability to heal a man and render him immortal. In this telling of the tale, it was Kirat who drank of the foam and became immortal. Already a splendid beast, the mare was transformed into a horse of immense strength and stature. Having missed the opportunity to drink of the Aras river's healing foam, Yusuf would die after calling on his son to avenge him of the wound that ultimately ended his life. This effort would end in the tragic realization by Rusen Ali that even victory could not stop the world from modernizing.

Inspiration: Karabakh or Azerbaijan horse

The Karabakh (Azerbaijani: Qarabağ atı), also known as the Karabai or Karabakhskaya in Russian, is a mountain-steppe racing and riding horse. It is named after the geographic region where the horse was originally developed in Karabakh, Azerbaijan. The breed is noted for its good temperament and speed; in 2004, a Karabakh horse named Kishmish from the Agdam stud in Azerbaijan covered 1000 metres in 1.09 minutes and 1600 metres in 1.52 minutes.

The Karabakh is thought to be influenced by Persian horses and the Akhal-Teke, Kabarda, Turkoman and Arabian breeds, and it influenced the development of the Russian Don during the 19th century. It is bred primarily in Azerbaijan's Shaki region. The breed numbers below 1,000, and it is threatened with extinction.

The Karabakh has close links to the Akhal-Teke (which is bred in Turkmenistan) and the Turkoman horse, which is bred in Iran. Some historians believe that they were originally a single breed and significantly influenced the development of the Arabian horse. These facts were found out after numerous researches in XIXth century.

The Karabakh region was known for the quality of its horses; the classical historian Strabo describes the Armenian province of “Orchistene" as supplying the kingdom with the "most cavalry." According to some sources, tens of thousands of horses with golden-chestnut coloring (characteristic of Karabakhs) were seized by the Arabs during their eighth- and ninth-century conquest of Arran.

The breed acquired its present characteristics during the 18th and 19th centuries. In Transcaucasia, Karabakh Khanate was known as a place for breeding of horses. Factory of the khanate was the main farm of purebred horses, which were not held for sale, but were only presented as gifts. According to Diterikhs, in 1797, right after the death of Agha Mohammad , Ibragim khan got his stable. There is some evidence that Ibrahim-Khalil (1763–1806), ruler of the Karabakh Khanate, had a herd numbering 3,000–4,000 (primarily Karabakhs). During the 19th century, Karabakhs became popular in Europe. An English company purchased 60 Karabakh mares from Mehdi-Kulu Khan, the last ruler of the Karabakh Khanate, at a large 1823 sale. Although its numbers were impacted in 1826 during the Russo-Iranian war, the breed remained intact.

The Karabakh played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Don breed. The heir of Russian general Valerian Madatov sold all his horses, including 200 Karabakh mares, to a breeder in the Don region in 1836. The mares were used to improve the Russian Don into the 20th century.

Karabakh numbers sharply decreased again during the early 20th century, primarily because of civil and ethnic wars in the Caucasus in general and the Karabakh region in particular. The breeding enterprise established by the Karabakh khans and developed by their heirs was destroyed in 1905. Karabakhs were bred to other breeds, resulting in changes including a reduction in size.

In 1949, the breed was revived at the Agdam stud in Azerbaijan. Seven years later, the Karabakh stallion Zaman and an Akhal-Teke named Mele-Kush were presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Soviet government.

The breed experienced another setback during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Before the 1993 capture of Agdam by Armenian forces, most of the Karabakh horses were moved from the Agdam stud. They are currently bred in winter pastures on the lowland Karabakh plains between Barda and Agjabadi.

Personality: As amiable as he is charming, Kirath is quite content to be surrounded by his beloved family. From the very first moment he arrived on the Sands, he was a ray of sunshine. Cheerful and ebullient, there is truly no one that Kirath can genuinely say he doesn't like. When others are cruel to him, he returns that cruelty with genuine kindness. When others overlook him, he floats serenely above such pithy concerns; why should he worry over what they may think of him when he knows that he is wonderful?

A fearless fellow, Kirath has not yet learned temperance when it comes to Threadfall. He's certainly no fool, but he is willing to test the limits of the possible when he thinks he can succeed. Of course, he generally thinks he can succeed all the time, so it will be up to his rider to keep him in check. It is not that he disrespects authority, rather he suffers from a common belief among the youth of his own invincibility. Though that view has been tarnished slightly by the death of Spavineth, he nevertheless holds on to faith in himself and his rider.

They are, surely, a cut above the rest. Not superior, exactly, though that is a difficult distinction to make. But... perhaps just a bit more honed, a bit more prepared. Whether this self impression will be able to be maintained long-term has yet to be determined, but for the time being Kirath is holding strong. Still, he is more than able to share a bit of his strength and vision with others. He is a patient fellow, more than willing to forgive any slights - whether real or perceived. That said, he can be an irrepressible tease, something which he'll probably never get over.

Positive Traits: Courageous, patient, kind
Negative Traits: Arrogant, teasing, reckless

NPC Egg: Small egg.

Adult Size: Small.

Physical Attributes: Though of a delicate build, Kirath's presence can readily be felt. A lithe and svelte dragon with a lovely wedge shaped head, Kirath is not afraid to show off such beauty.

Additional Notes: Boys only, please and thank you. If Kirath has a particular eye for masculine beauty... well, it can't be helped. He does admire a nice strapping fellow, and will likely devote himself completely when he finds Mr. Right. Granted, it might be a bumpy road to get there.

In Threadfall his small size grants him a measure of maneuverability, but he is also steadfast.

Impression Effect: Upon Impression, M'zhir's obsession with Tavier's passing was put to bed for once and for all, to be replaced with a similar attachment to his dragon. M'zhir's naturally magnetic personality has been enhanced significantly. When he walks into a room, his presence is palpable, a trait shared with his dragon.

Why Me? Frankly, it was because M'zhir needed him. Kirath knew that deep down there was a brave man who wanted to face his fears head on, and he had the ability to make it so. Not only that, but the dragon's kind nature empathized with the keenness of M'zhir's loss, which loss he smoothed over when their eyes met for the first time. For his own part, M'zhir has much to offer the foolhardy creature; possessing a much more focused and calculating nature, the man can look ahead to see the dangers that may arise. Rather than shying away from them, they will meet them... and gladly so.

Yee-Haw! Let's Ride!

This Profile Is Eligible for ALL Colors -- bronze, brown, blue and green!
Color Preference: Bronze, Brown, Blue, Green

The Rider

Name: Sh'ao
Age: 28
Nameday: 3549.08.22
Sex: Trans male
Sexual Orientation: Gay
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Healer

Physical Description:
Sh'ao is every bit as lean as his dragon, but he didn't get the height to match--as a result, he's a rather compact individual, and the physical exertion of being a rider has only succeeded in making him more wiry than anything. He's no more than 5'5" at best, and his presence comes from being a rider instead of his stature. He's a bit lacking in sharp edges overall, with a heart-shaped face and just enough padding on his frame to keep him from being bony. Sh'ao's skin is a deep walnut brown, covered with a smattering of freckles that are only barely visible. His features are vaguely elfin, with arched eyebrows over bright gray eyes that give him something of a permanent look of gentle surprise--personally, he'd prefer if it was interpreted as interest instead. He has a strong nose, and presents an altogether regal enough profile if you can catch him idle for long enough to spot it.
Sh'ao keeps his dusty blonde hair short, usually combed up into a sort of fauxhawk, and he takes great pains to keep it neat. He's a bit concerned with maintaining his appearance, and is rather fastidious with the upkeep of his clothes in particular--well and truly, he wants to look as respectable as possible, and much time has been spent in the process of making his wardrobe both flattering and functional. Despite his somewhat expensive tastes, he wears little in the way of jewelry, favoring more utilitarian accessories like scarves and gloves when needed. The only adornment he has is a single stud in his left ear, featuring a stone carefully chosen to match Kinzigtalth's hide as closely as he could manage.

Personality:
Sh'ao can easily be overwhelming at first meeting, sweeping up whatever's caught his attention with all the care it's due--and if you ask him, everything deserves his full focus. He always seems to have energy for just about everything, and he does his best to remain completely ready to act at a moment's notice. It's not hard at all to get his participation, provided it's all respectable and proper, of course, and Sh'ao genuinely enjoys being around people. He pays close attention to others, doing his best to pick up on little cues and tells that he can use to help gauge how someone's feeling--he's skilled at picking up on changes in mood, and his concern is far from forced. He won't hesitate to offer a friendly ear or a shoulder to cry on should it be needed, and even if he can get thrown off if he's informed of anything even a little untoward, he's quick to recover and do whatever he can to help make things right.
Much of his self-confidence and personal sense of worth centers around what he can do for others, and he's determined to provide his weyr-encompassing family with the fullest extent of his service. Sh'ao places a lot of importance on maintaining morale, and does what he can to foster interpersonal connections among people where he's able--he's a bit of a matchmaker, although in a completely platonic sense. Sh'ao understands the importance of having people there for you, and he's not about to allow any comrades of his to live so secluded if he can do something about it. He at least has the benefit of knowing when to give people space, however, and he tries to avoid being suffocating or overly familiar.

For all of Sh'ao's enthusiasm and eagerness, he still manages not to come off as hyperactive, maintaining as measured of a pace as his unfortunately limited patience will allow. He has all the time in the world for people who are still learning or that he can tell are genuinely trying, but he's more critical by far of himself and those that he thinks should know better. Unsurprisingly, Sh'ao finds little problem in directly addressing the problem head-on--with that in mind, he's rather lucky in that Impressing to Kinzigtalth has helped him become more genial. He approaches these things with a gentler touch these days, although he's still not above being just as sharp as he feels is necessary if the circumstances are truly egregious enough.

While he truly hates having to slow himself down much for anything, if at all, he hates the idea of making a fool of himself by working himself to total exhaustion. He'll wholly agree that he needs to be well aware of his own limitations, having both a healer's experience and a rider's training to guide him--this would do an excellent job at herding him toward moderation were it not for his tendency to push himself as hard as possible regardless.
He's long ago decided that if he wanted to live up to his dream of being someone that High Reaches could depend upon, he'd have to work himself to the bone to earn it, and Sh'ao has already come to terms with the inevitable fatigue the effort will bring. Although he's fully aware that it's hypocritical of him to excuse any overexertion, it doesn't exactly stop him from making the same mistakes anyway, and he's quick to go on the defensive if confronted about any similar behaviors; 'do as I say, not as I do' remains a rather familiar phrase in his lexicon. He has no illusions about leading by example, and instead

Now that he's graduated, Sh'ao finds himself in a little bit of an awkward transitory period as he settles in to the reality of his life. He can't quite seem to make up his mind on whether or not he's done enough to prove himself to the weyr at large, and continues to take himself quite seriously as a result even in practically inconsequential matters. Sh'ao rarely lets himself off the hook for missteps and errors without Kinzigtalth's intervention, and will focus especially hard on areas he's had trouble in recently to ensure it won't happen again. Although this means he's completely unafraid of tedious or detail-oriented work, the downside is that Sh'ao tends to bog himself down in self-inspection, and often needs to be reminded that he can sometimes let the little things go. He's still got plenty of room to grow, but he's at least confident enough in his progress to continue with little hesitation.

Positive Trait List: Enthusiastic, focused, attentive, helpful.
Negative Trait List: Impatient, hypocritical, uptight, defensive.

History:
Shiraon came from the creche of High Reaches Weyr, and as far as he'd always been concerned, there was nowhere else he'd like to be. Despite the cold, the dangers of newly-returned Thread, and all the other roadblocks that came with being a non-rider in the weyr, he'd never dreamed of leaving--his parents had been riders, and even if he'd never been especially close to them, he was determined to try and follow in their footsteps. Like the rest of High Reaches, he'd been suitably prepared (at least, as much as anyone had been able to be) for the return of Thread, and seeing the old Enemy back in the sky was yet more fuel on the fire for him. Shiraon knew that he had to do something, and he wanted nothing more than to fight with the Weyr--his family. They'd been protecting him since he was born, and he wanted to return the favor.

The main problem? Clutch after clutch, Hatching after Hatching, Shiraon was left standing. For thirteen turns, he found himself at every Feast congratulating others before returning to the grind the next day, pushing himself through the disappointment onto the next task.

As the turns began to add up, however, Shiraon didn't sit idly by. He redirected his frustrations and worries about being good enough into something productive instead, focusing his energy on picking up whatever he could from the healers in his spare time--he'd already become something of a known face on the Sands simply by virtue of being a Candidate for so long, and he'd seen plenty of blood spilled in the process. Learning what to do when things got bad was the natural progression of things as far as he was concerned, and Shiraon quickly showed a knack for helping to stitch people back together.
Still, the idea of becoming a Healer properly didn't enter his mind. Shiraon knew what he was here to do, and the notion of his place being on dragonback was far too entrenched to shake.

And then he aged out before he knew it, and it was...over, just like that. Not with a bang, but with--nothing at all. Merely the passing of days amounting to his exit, followed by soft condolences and surrendering his knots with as much dignity as he was able to scrape together. He was met with empathy, of course, but the first seeds of doubt had been planted nonetheless.

Shiraon was heartbroken at having to give up his dream, but couldn't bear the notion of leaving the weyr for an entirely new start on top of leaving Candidacy. After struggling to give himself proper direction for a month or so, he eventually circled back to his Healer training--in due time, he convinced himself that he could still help his weyr, even from the ground. He threw himself into his studies, pushing back at the feelings of inadequacy and frustration that had begun to set in months ago as the reality of his situation had truly dawned on him. He'd have to accept that he would never be a dragonrider, but--maybe he could still be something else. Something that was enough to help, to make a difference--
Although it was late in his training overall, he walked the tables not long after he'd hung up his robes, finally becoming a journeyman under the rising pressure of thread. His place was still at Hatchings, but now on the sidelines--rather than being a face bobbing in the sea of white fabric, he'd be watching and waiting beside them, ready to step in should he be needed. Shiraon eventually grew to be almost content with his role as he began filling it more and more, but something still felt like it was missing despite his best efforts at convincing himself otherwise. He would have plenty to do during threadfall, and Shiraon would do everything in his power to push that nagging feeling out of his mind in favor of focusing on his job. Attending Zenobiath and Aresoth's clutch was simply business as usual, although not without a little extra heartache at the prospect of watching all these Impressions roll by. He'd only expected to patch people up, to offer a comforting shoulder to cry on should anyone need it on the way back to the barracks--and then he heard them, calling his name as they struggled not to trip over their own feet mid-lope. He could hardly believe it was real, but there was no doubt about it. There were rainbows in their eyes that Sh'ao would never forget, and once they'd finally found their place in his arms, he knew their name.

It had been turns in the making, but he'd finally Impressed. Kinzigtalth had found him, and together, they'd make High Reaches proud.

Other: Sh'ao has a mild fear of tunnelsnakes, and isn't exactly fond of spiders, either. He keeps his weyr painstakingly clean to prevent any small critters and their ilk from getting any ideas, and is very partial to his small collection of unusual ceramic mugs for his daily klah.

The Dragon

Name: Kinzigtalth
Origin of Name: From the Kinzigtal area of the Black Forest, responsible for producing much of the breed.
Inspiration: Black Forest Horse
Originally bred for farming and forestry work, the Black Forest Horse is a light draft horse hailing from the Black Forest region of Germany, as the name implies. This breed has been documented back to the early fifteenth century, and its main breeding area covers from the Kinzigtal to the north and the northernmost region of the Hotzenwald to the south. Previously, this horse was kept in high concentrations around the monasteries of St. Margen and St. Peter, earning an alternate name for the breed: the St. Margener Fuchs.
Following WWII, technological advances in both transport and agriculture eliminated much demand for working horses like the Black Forest Horse. The number of registered mares dropped from over 1200 to below 160 by 1977, and the breed has been listed as endangered since 2007.

Personality:
Kinzigtalth wants nothing more than to be the warm blanket of comfort for their family--someone they can rely on, who they can bring their troubles to and have them all washed away. They look up to Aresoth as a protector and guardian, and have a strong desire to live up to his legacy as a proud dragon of High Reaches. Genuinely, this accounts for the majority of their drive; they want to be worthy of their pedigree, and every bit a pillar of the weyr as well, even if they're not quite as sure how to go about doing it as they'd like for you to believe.
On the outside, Kinzigtalth is great at making it seem like they know what they're doing, but their doubts about themself are a little harder to ignore than they'd ever be willing to admit. They haven't bought much into the traditionalist views of High Reaches, instead centering their worth on what they can do rather than their hide alone--they judge others on the same scale as well, although to a more lenient degree. Needing to prove their own worth to themself has made it a little difficult for them to properly mesh with others how they'd truly like to, although they're far from a hermit in spite of this. They push themself to be sociable at the very least, and strive to maintain a public presence that others can count on.

While they don't tend to come off as a talkative sort, Kinzigtalth is warmer than their initial impression may suggest. They operate with a grave, almost solemn sense of gravitas that gives them an air of the utmost seriousness, a fact that's only compounded by their slow and steady approach to...well, everything. Kinzigtalth is nothing if not patient, and will not rush into anything at all if they can help it; they treat every task they're given with the same level of focus and attention, no matter if it's something inconsequential. To them, every duty is of the highest importance, and Kinzigtalth would never dream of shirking their work. They hold their own contributions to a ridiculously high standard, and can be far too harsh on themself if they're allowed to steep in their own thoughts about it for too long. In this manner, they're exactly like Theirs--they tend to think too much, often to their own detriment. It's only when something pulls them out of their echo chamber that they see their bad habits for what they are, and they try to be kinder to themself when they're able to realize it in time.
They're an earnest, heartfelt dragon at their core, but they hit a wall when it comes to properly expressing their emotions, and struggle to be especially clear with their own feelings. Communication of anything deeply personal isn't their strongest suit, unfortunately, and while they do try, they can never quite come up with the right words for what they feel. Grief affects them particularly strongly, and they take each loss personally--with so much of their focus staying on being enough for their weyr and how badly they want to protect others, Kinzigtalth finds it hard to let go of sorrow. It serves as a reminder of what they're fighting for, to be sure, but they can't easily move past it once they've taken that kind of weight on.

Positive Traits: Earnest, stalwart, supportive.
Negative Traits: Self-critical, melancholic, perfectionist.

NPC Egg: Large

Adult Size: Medium
Physical Attributes:
Kinzigtalth cuts an elegant figure, with long legs and an overall sleek silhouette--they're built for speed and endurance, and their frame shows it. Although they had to grow into their legs and their equally long tail, they've done so quite admirably, and has become a proud example of their color over time. They aren't a dragon inclined to slouch or droop, and they maintain a stiff, if not outright formal, posture at nearly all times.

Additional Notes:
They have an especially hot flame, although its length leaves something to be desired--while this brings them closer to danger during threadfall, they take little issue with it.
Kinzigtalth will not rise/chase particularly often, but when the urge strikes, they are especially intense about it. Ultimately, they want nothing more than to be understood and loved, and get attached rather quickly if they feel as though there's the stirrings of a connection there--they just have to be careful not to let this tendency open themself to heartbreak.

Impression Effect:
Under Kinzigtalth's influence, Sh'ao's relatively short fuse was tempered down to something more akin to terse impatience, gradually evening out into proper behavior more befitting a rider of High Reaches. He finds it easier to take the high road when he's pressed, and Sh'ao will never again have to worry about his place in the weyr--he'll always have Kinzigtalth to rely on, although he'll certainly need to support his lifemate in kind. He doesn't mind in the slightest.
Beyond that, Sh'ao developed that sort of curious magnetism that many riders have, a trait that's proven to suit him well. His attention to others feels just that much more personal now, shifting his tone from what was practically that of a hall monitor to a benevolent older brother.

Why Me?
Kinzigtalth knew what their duty was from the first moment they were even aware. They'd find Theirs, and go on to serve their weyr--it was exactly what they wanted, and it wasn't long before they got to start searching through candidates. Each one had made their hearts ache just that much more, and they could never settle on what to do about it when they'd finally be able. They needed someone to help soothe them, someone that they could work with--and it wasn't until the Hatching that Kinzigtalth found their match in Sh'ao. His lingering hurt over aging out was one thing that Kinzigtalth could fix, and in doing so, let themself connect to someone in the way that mattered most.
Sh'ao is their rock and their advocate, and they rely on his steady support and his drive to be better in order to keep themself from stagnating in their own feelings. Kinzigtalth can see themself in a softer light with Sh'ao's perspective, making accepting things about themself that they cannot change much easier to swallow; Sh'ao will always love them for all of who they are, and he's the one that matters most. Kinzigtalth was quickly drawn to Sh'ao's willingness to be there for others, and his devotion to duty aligned perfectly with theirs. They each push the other toward the finish line, and their combined dedication means that they're sure to bring their weyr along with them.

Yee-Haw! Let's Ride!

This Profile Is Eligible for ALL Colors -- bronze, brown, blue and green!
Color Preference Bronze, brown, blue, green

The Rider

Name: T’iru (formerly Taniru)
Age: 25
Nameday: 3552.03.04
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Not a clue!
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Tanner

Physical Description: Powerfully-built and tall, T’iru could be a towering and intimidating presence if he wasn’t so damn smiley all the time. He has dark hair that’s been sun bleached with a reddish hue, and tends to be a bit messy due to his tendency to crop it himself when it gets in his way. His skin is slightly tan due to all the time he spends outside… and it’s not uncommon to see him with quite the sunburn. He has a smattering of freckles as a result.

Personality: A boisterous and friendly individual, it’s rare for T’iru to meet a person he doesn’t like. He’s social by nature and will happily integrate himself with any groups or individuals nearby. He doesn’t know them? No problem! He’s not shy about introducing himself, and loners, beware! T’iru doesn’t understand ‘go away’ vibes and is comfortable in all sorts of situations. He is a bit more understanding of people who might be put off by his appearance, but he promises, he’s a good person! Er, well, he hopes he is…

On top of being a people person, T’iru is just… nice. Someone he knows is having a bad day? He’ll swing by with a bubbly pie or some other little gift in hopes of cheering them up. Does he see someone struggling with something? You better believe he’ll be right there to help! Even if it’s not something within his power to grant, T’iru will still ask if there’s anything he can do. Seeing people happy makes him happy, so it’s natural for him to pitch in wherever he can.

Unfortunately, T’iru is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He will never be a very smart man, and he is extraordinarily easy to take advantage of. Those who also attempt to convey deeper meanings through wordplay will not have much success with T’iru. Things need to be spoken plainly or else they’ll fly right over his head. He can also be oblivious about people’s real feelings as well. If someone’s secretly upset but insists they’re fine? Well, okay! They must be alright!

T’iru can be an incredibly reckless person, and he rarely thinks of the consequences before diving headfirst into situations. He’s a big, strong guy! He should be able to handle stuff, right? Yeah… not always. Whether it’s a stupid bet, or a chance (in his mind) to prove himself somehow, T’iru often eagerly leaps long before he looks.

Positive Trait List Sociable, Generous, Sweet
Negative Trait List Reckless, Dumb, Oblivious

History: Taniru has lived a fairly uneventful life thus far. He was born in a small Hold on the Western continent, the oldest of three siblings. His mother was a Baker, and his father was a skilled enough Journeyman Tanner to have his own small shop. When Taniiru was of age, he followed his father’s footsteps, able to apply himself enough to the craft to find that he enjoyed it. It was a good but simple life, and had Thread never returned, he likely would have inherited his father’s shop one day.

But Thread did return, and while their little Hold was spared the devastation that some suffered, Pern would never be the same again. When a dragon came riding in Search, Taniru felt compelled to take his chances at the Weyr. It just felt like the right thing to do--if he didn’t succeed and become a dragonrider, he could always come back home and help. His mother and father wished him well, and there were some tearful goodbyes before Taniru was brought back to Western Weyr.

Weyr life was entirely different than anything Taniru ever knew, but he good-naturedly threw himself into his lessons and did his best. He certainly wasn’t the best student, but that was nothing that remedial lessons couldn’t help with.

He stood at every Hatching with the same cheerful confidence he always had, and it wasn’t until he participated in a Candidate swap for Zenobiath and Aresoth’s clutch that he met his Maharath.

Other: Originally from Western but got lucky during a swap, whoo!

The Dragon

]Origin of Name: Maharath is named after the title of the man that saved the breed from extinction in the first half of the 20th century-- Maharaja Umaid Singhji.
Inspiration: Marwari

Personality: Behold, High Reaches, Maharath is here! This dragon is unafraid and confident in everything they do. They know themselves to be a true warrior and will throw themselves into training and drills alike in order to best prepare themselves for the war against the ancient enemy. This is not a shy dragon, and they will scoff at any who shy away from their duty. Fear not, brothers and sisters. Though they believe the battleground is no place for the cowardly, they will still risk life and limb to protect their fellows. The thought of pain, injury, or even death does not deter them, and they will always rise to meet any challenge. They are an intelligent, decisive creature, and they think fast on their feet. Maharath will carry themselves with honor and dignity, and if they see themselves as an example to be looked up to, who can blame them?

No matter their color, Maharath believes themself to be a superb specimen. They expect to be the best at what they do and they will gently brush off any suggestion that they are not. They know their worth, and the opinions’ of others won’t make much of an impact. And when it comes to fighting, well, they'll point out ways to improve to their fellows--even if the advice is unwanted. They are an intelligent dragon and pick up on things quickly, and their drive to fight keeps them from getting too distracted or bored when it comes to drills. They’re more than willing to assist if others are having difficulties… but it may unintentionally come off as condescending. Though their pride may not win them many friends, that won’t bother Maharath one bit.

What can and will rile this dragon up is when situations go wrong, and there’s nothing they can do to salvage it. A bad decision on their part means a wingmate ends up getting hurt? A chase they should have won slipping right through their claws? Misjudging their own flame length and missing a bit of Thread they should have easily had? Inexcusable. Maharath can quickly grow snappy and surly if things do not work out as they intended, and their temper can be legendary. They’ll need to be coaxed back into good humor by their rider or else they’ll be inclined to sulk. To top it all off, they are picky by nature and inclined to fuss if things aren’t how they want them. This pickiness can revolve around their food, their riding leathers… and yes, even how their rider presents themselves.

Positive Traits: Bold, Noble, Intelligent
Negative Traits: Arrogant, Temperamental, Picky

NPC Egg:] A small/medium sized egg.

Adult Size: Probably small to medium!

]Physical Attributes: An elegantly crafted creature, Maharath is beautiful and knows it. Slender limbed with a deep, muscular chest, their back tapers in a smooth slope down into a long and graceful tail. Though they will never be a brawny creature, they have a surprising amount of stamina for their size. A particularly notable trait of Maharath’s appearance is that their head knobs curve inward, nearly to the point where they touch.

Additional Notes: Maharath will always be ready for battle and welcomes the fight against the ancient enemy. Their tendency to show off, however, might land them in hot water with no way out. It will be up to their rider to keep the showy moves and theatrics to a minimum less they endanger themself or their fellows.

If they do end up injured and out of commission for any length of time, Maharath is prone to depression. They will show little interest in eating, and there is a real risk of them becoming underweight.

Impression Effect: Impression will give T’iru a little more insight than he once possessed so he no longer takes things quite so literally. His recklessness will be tempered with the knowledge that his life is now linked with Maharath’s, so he might think twice before throwing himself into dangerous situations.

Why Me? Maharath was immediately drawn to T’iru’s kind and generous nature, finding a kindred spirit in the young man who left his peaceful life for the chance to fight. With their help, they have no doubt that T’iru will become every inch of a noble dragonrider. T’iru’s general sweetness will help to smooth out some of Maharath’s more arrogant edges when dealing with others, and he’ll always be able to coax his dragon out of their more irritable fits of tempers. For T’iru, Maharath would move the stars themselves… so they suppose they can set aside their grudges. For now.
