Four adults sat inside of a dimly lit room; metal walls and the sounds of engines all about. There was a quiet hiss as oxygen was filtered into the area. The life support systems were running below optimum levels in the room but it was still a little better than what the lower ranks of their newly formed society faced. They sat in silence as the weight of their decision settled into place.

They were sending 100 citizens to the ground today.

Returning to the ground - the very idea was frightening and exciting. One-hundred and 8 years ago, a nuclear world war had destroyed the human race; all but those that were lucky to be in the 13 12 different space. That first space locked generation had to watch in horror as multiple nukes turned the Earth into an irradiated planet. Their descendants were unable to return to the Earth for fear that it would be unsurvivable. Four generations of humans had never seen the Earth beyond what was found in old movie clips and books. They had never felt the wind on their face nor the sun. Unfortunately, as much as the idea of experiencing what their ancestors had taken for granted was an exciting adventure most wanted to take, they still did not know if Earth was survivable. It was quite possible that there was still too much radiation for anyone to survive on the Earth.

Which was why they were only sending 100 citizens to the ground. They tried to prepare the young citizens as best they could with classes related to survival for the last three months but there was no way to prepare them for a possible radiation soaked zone. They would have wristbands on their left wrist that would, in theory, transmit their vitals back to the newly formed ARK. That was the only way they were going to know if the ground was survivable - if the 100 could survive, everyone would be able to survive there.

Surviving on the ground was something that was sorely needed; the four in the room knew better than most what was likely to happen if it wasn't. There was a reason the last Four stations had finally come together. There was a reason they were sending the 100 to the ground almost a hundred years before they knew the Earth would be safe.

All life support systems were failing.

The technicians estimated that they might have been able to fix it in six months. The reality was that the ARK had maybe four and a half months of life support left - at best five months after the 100 were gone. They needed the Earth to be survivable...or they would need to cull hundreds of people and hope that life support could be repaired. So the four leaders from the different stations sat together in silence, knowing that they very well have been sending 100 citizens down to a possible irradiated Earth. Some had hope that it also meant that they were sending them down to give them their best chance to live. Truly live. At the same time, it wasn’t like they could spare much in the way of supplies or goods to send down with them to help. They couldn’t afford to just throw away resources if the Earth wasn’t survivable.

The kids were being sent down with their wrist monitors, of course, and a day of prepackaged rations each. Except for water; they might have been able to grow new food but they would never have been able to replace the water that they ejected. The kids were also allowed to bring two changes of clothes from their own clothing - if they had more than one change that was - as well as one other personal belonging. All of this would have been fit into a small makeshift pack. And of course if they did make it and the ground was survivable they would be able to use whatever was on the two shuttles they were sending down. That was all that they were able to afford the 100 on their journey down to the ground. Even the fuel to power the two drop ships would be sorely missed but it had to be done.

As the small chime filled the room, tensions rose. The 100 had been filing into the two different drop ships. At the end of the chime there was a shaking that everyone near them had the chance of feeling as the two drop ships were ejected - one right after the other. The Alpha ship was ejected first and then the Beta ship. Each council member prayed in their own way as the ships carrying their hope for the future was launched towards Earth. Each ship carried 50 citizens which was a mixture of the four surviving stations.

The ejection was bumpy, especially as the rockets fired just long enough to put them on the right trajectory. There was a span of 3 minutes as they hurtled towards Earth that those on board were weightless. Those who stayed in their seat, stayed safe, may have still felt the difference but those that unbuckled their seatbelts definitely did. But those that were able to feel that euphoric sensation for all it’s worth might have ended up regretting it as they entered Earth’s atmosphere. The drop ships shook as though from the wrath of god shaking their fist. Lights flickered and as gravity returned, those in the air would have been tossed about. As the ships entered the Earth’s atmosphere and started to slow their decent, a monitor on each floor turned on with a message for The 100.

For those of you that have been imprisoned for your disregard for the rules of your station, you've been given a second chance. As of now, you are pardoned of all past crimes. For those of you that volunteered or were selected for this mission, it is our hope that you see this as not just a chance for you, but a chance for all of us, indeed for mankind itself. We have no idea what is waiting for you down there and we have spared what little resources that could be spared. Our records tell us that there are resources available for you in a government bunker that had been empty before World War 3. Once you’ve landed the access co---

The most terrifying thing happened at that point. All lights turned off as the machines malfunctioned. The transmission had been cut off as the electronics on the ship stopped working. Without the built in navigation, the ships began to diverge from one another. This was meant to happen in part as they were intended not to land on top of one another, but the split continued fraction by fraction until both ships were off course. Thankfully at that point the mechanisms to slow down their descent had already been triggered or else their landing would have been like an intergalactic missile which none of them would have survived.

Each ship had only traveled for about twenty-five minutes, 3 of them weightless before they entered the Earth’s atmosphere, but those twenty-five minutes was life changing. Unfortunately, do to the malfunction, the ships deviated further away from each other than intended.

They were cast to the Earth a couple miles apart.

Neither ship made it to where they were have supposed to have gone. The π™°πš•πš™πš‘πšŠ πš‚πš‘πš’πš™ landed in the middle of a forest so green that it would have been overwhelming to see. Meanwhile the π™±πšŽπšπšŠ πš‚πš‘πš’πš™ landed miles away next to a river about twenty-feet wide. Both would have landed in the time known as Evening, something that generations of humans had been denied. The sun was in the position to start setting so the colors of the sky were not so much of a vivid blue; more like the fading embers promising to kiss the earth goodnight shortly.

As the night wore on, everyone made their own choices. Some may have chosen to sleep outside of their drop ships while others chose the safe route and stayed inside of a more familiar surrounding. Others still chose not to sleep at all. Two such young women that had survived the fall to Earth on the Alpha ship, Jessica and Leia, took the time as the sun was setting to venture out into the woods. They moved through the forest, seeing such wonders about them. As little floating lights appeared in the forest in the form of Fireflies, the girls even found something they thought to be a delight - berries! Though they were careful of their surroundings, the smell of the berries did override any sense of caution they may have had.

The berries they picked were shared between the two young women. And they were oh so sweet - sweeter and, in a way, better than anything they had experienced to that point. Unfortunately with the sweet came the bitter. By the time they realized that the heady feeling they both experienced led to a delusional fever, they had wandered off from the group quite a ways. With berries still left in their hands, the girls fell to the ground. Their calls were muted by the trees of the forest, their voices weak from the toxins of the berries in their system. Jessica and Leia died among the trees and the stars, looking as angelic in their death sleep as they ever had in life.

The only person to venture out after them, Xavier, never stumbled across their bodies. Instead, the blond adolescent missed all of the signs that they'd left behind in their exploration. The third survivor of the Alpha ship to wonder out into the forest wandered so far that they were lost...lost but not without the will to go on. They continued on and on beyond the setting sun. In the dark they stumbled and fell down into a ravine. A bone from their femur split, slowly killing them overnight. Perhaps they were fortunate that they had passed out from the pain early as the scent of blood drew a small family of mountain lions to them by the time the sun started rising. Smelling no hint of rot or disease, the animals partook in the easy kill and feast. Thus Xavier gave back to the Earth and joined the circle of life.

As the sun continued to rise, paying no mind to the tragic 3 deaths that had occurred overnight as celestial bodies were prone to do, a young woman named Saga made her way away from camp. She was intent on finding her brother who happened to have landed miles away. Despite having walked for the better part of an hour and that the sun had finished rising during her walk, she had gotten no closer to finding her twin. The young woman tried to double back but she'd gotten too far to really do that. The best she'd been able to do was to find the river again. She traveled along the river, none the wiser that she was traveling away from camp. When the morning sun and dehydration affected her senses, Saga ventured into the river. She moved further in than she meant to have during the elation of sensations that followed. With one misplaced step, the young woman twisted and fell into the river. Without knowing how to swim and panicking from being pushed by the current, Saga fought in vain against the water. After fighting for her life for what seemed like forever she finally succumbed to fatigue and stopped fighting. The river was not that kind where she was and she was beaten against the rocks as she was washed downstream. Her body was carried back to her camp by early afternoon, washing up on rocks within sight distance of the dropship she had left so early in the morning. Someone from the Beta ship would have been able to find her by that point but it would have been too late - she had long since drowned.

As the sun continued into the sky, it became very clear that the weather was moody. Despite the fact that a lot of wood had seemed to be wet the day before it got very warm. Back in the time when people measured temperature it would have read as 90 degrees fahrenheit or 32.22 celsius.

It was hard to believe that the Earth was survivable considering how many of the 100 had died in the last month and a half. More than 25 teenagers and young adults had died off.

Two of the guys from the original Alpha Ship (Benjamin and Ryker) had gotten into a major fight that threatened to damage some of their supplies. Thankfully one of the boys had the mind to somehow navigate the fight to take it farther into the woods. Unfortunately when Ryker left Benjamin injured, the redheaded man hadn't faired too well against the bear that found him next. Karma acted quickly upon the other man too - as Ryker wandered off he was too far away from any of the camps, he'd received a deadly message. A spear stuck him to the tree and he bled out before help arrived. When two guys(Oz and Adam) finally found him, they too ended up in a bad situation. In their attempt to find something to help carry the murdered young man back to camp with they'd gone off too far…and oddly corporeal yellow smoke was his downfall.

Days after that, more tragedy struck when Four others (Mohinder, Liam, Jun and Isadora) went off to try and collect whatever they could. Even a month later no one has found a trace of where they had gone. Perhaps that was for the best considering that the following deaths were not as kind to those left behind. When Mario and Diego went out to look for those that were missing, they wandered off too far. This time when the yellow fog rolled in, bringing boils to their skin and burning their lungs from the inside out, Mario was able to make it back. With his last breaths he was able to construct a crude picture of what had happened to him.

The idea of the death mist raced through all the remaining groups so quickly it was almost as though there had been a public announcement. The fact that the groups had come together into a centralized base, an abandoned mall, helped with the spread of information. For some the darkness that some part of the mall offered was comforting - more like home. Perhaps it was easier to come to terms with so much trama when there were more familiar elements.

Though the mall offered plenty of room for the survivors, there wasn't a lot in the way of resources. At least nothing easily available. The stores had almost seemed…picked through, scavenged. Anything that could be dismantled by hand pretty much had been. As had any buildings that may have once been around the mall. In fact, most of the buildings that had stood around it, having been made from brick and wood, hadn't seemed to survive. There were some scattered ruins between what the forest had reclaimed but not much else. Even with the oddness that surrounded the mall, as everyone on the Stations had been told that most people died soon after the nukes had gone off, it had still been deemed the better option.

At least this way there was plenty of room for everyone even with some sections being deemed structurally unsafe.
