Ujiri 1/10
He kept his arms crossed in front of his chest as he leaned against the side of the house. The hybrid was upset and had been for a while. Ever since his mother had decided being home with her family no longer made her happy. The teen was more moody than usual. His temper had risen as well. Facing his mom, Ariya, he glared at the ground just in front of her feet. “This is so stupid.. I hate it. I hate her.” He said without thinking.

Ariya
Lately her son had been showing signs of anger that wasn’t usually present in him. He was the laid back one. The one who slacked off and played around more than the others. As he pouted she simply watched him, trying to figure out what to say to him. When he started to speak on his own she felt some relief until he said he hated his mother. “That isn’t fair, Ujiri, and not true.” She could allow him to be upset, mad even, but hating Ujana was not something she could let happen.

Ujiri 2/10
“I don’t care if its fair.” He finally looked up at her. “And it is true. She just decided to leave us.” One arm swept out to motion to the right in a general direction. “So what, she isn’t happy here with us anymore so she can just leave!? What about you mom?” Did that mean his mothers were no longer together? Was Ujana going to go find a new family? Just like she did with Eurig and his dad?

She shook her head at him. “She didn’t leave us like that.” Ariya had spoken to Ujana about her desire to travel. It had been agreed upon that the kids should have a stable home and Ariya herself had no desire to move around constantly. She also wasn’t going to hold Ujana down. “Your mother wanted to travel. I did not. We agreed that you kids need a home.” It wasn’t easy to explain something like that to a kid. Despite Ujiri and Ika being in their teens they were still kids.

“Oh yeah, you mean like she left Eurig’s dad? Is she going to come home carrying someone else’s baby?” He practically spat out the words. “Is she going to come home at all?” Clearly there was something deeper bothering him about Ujana leaving. He pushed off the house and started to walk away. “If she didn’t want us she shouldn’t have stayed after Ika and I were bloomed.”

Hearing his words made her close her eyes for a second. So that was it? He thought Ujana didn’t want him. A deep breath in and she calmed herself before she looked at him again. “Your mother isn’t running away from you, Ujiri. She loves you. She loves all of her kids. Subira included.” She moved to close the distance between them so that he couldn’t get away just yet. “She’s not leaving you. She just wanted to travel again. When you are older you are welcome to join her if you want. Though she'll likely be home by then.”

He stopped and balled his hands into fists. “I don’t want to leave Jauhar. I like it here.” He turned on his mom and practically yelled at her now. “What about you!? Are you going to stay here and be miserable while you wait for her to come home? She could be out there seeing whoever she wants and sleeping around and you are stuck here being loyal!” The thought bothered him even more since he thought his family was being broken up.

As her son rounded on her to yell and release some of the anger he had she tilted her head. Did he really think she was miserable? Was that how she looked to him? Ariya frowned and shook her head. “Ujiri.. I am not miserable. I am home. I have my kids here.. well, two of them.” His comment about Ujana sleeping around caused her to bring a hand up to pinch the bridge of her nose. Was that how he viewed his mother? “Your mother isn’t doing that!" She snapped at him.

“How do you know? You’re here! You can’t see what she does! You don’t know!” He shouted again. Ujiri had gotten away with so much stuff when no one was around. If his mothers couldn’t see him and no one told them then he could do all kinds of things! “You are stuck here with me and Ika. Did she dump Eurig on you too?” He wasn’t being nice about this argument at all. He had frustrations that he wanted to get off his chest. He loved his older brother but he didn't think it was fair if his mom was left to take care of him with no help.

Her patience was wearing thin with this line of conversation. “Ujiri.. it doesn’t matter. Even if your mother decided that I wasn’t what she wanted anymore its not something I can change.” She saw the look on his face when she said that and took a deep breath. “Ujana wanted to travel. She had wanderlust. Would you have rather I kept her here out of guilt? Do you think she’d be happy like that?” She couldn’t do that. Even if she was lazy, Ariya did everything she could for Ujana. “And I am not stuck here. I chose to stay. Eurig was never dumped on me either. I had a chance to walk away when your mother was pregnant with him and I didn’t. Eurig is my son just as much as you are, so that was unfair to me for you to say that.” She saw the leafling boy as her own just as much as the other kids. The fact that he wasn't part Alk had no bearing on it.

Ujiri 6/10
He adopted a sad look as he watched his mom. She was just okay with letting his mother choose to be somewhere else? She didn’t want to fight to keep her close? Tears started to form in his eyes but he wasn’t sure if he was upset or pissed off. Maybe both? “Why can’t you change that? Why would it be guilt to keep her here with her family?” He didn't understand either of those points. She did know that his mom loved Eurig so when she said it wasn't fair he lowered his gaze for a second to show shame.

“Ujiri.. you’re not listening.” Another sigh, this one longer than the last. “Ujana had a desire to do something that made her happy. Keeping her tied here would be unfair and eventually make her unhappy. She could go because I stayed with you and your sister.” Knowing that the kids would be taken care of had taken a weight off Ujana’s shoulders. “If your mother decides that she finds someone better than me on her journey, then there is nothing any of us can do to stop that. I would never stand in the way of your mother’s happiness.” That wasn’t something she was going to change. “I love your mother and you kids. I will be the one to stay behind and make sure you kids have a home to come back to and support your mother while she gets the wanderlust out of her system. When she is ready she will have a home to come back to as well.”

He could only stare at Ariya as she answered him again. She seemed stubborn at first but as she spoke more he realized that she really loved his mother. It was enough to make the tears in his eyes spill over. “I still hate it! I don’t like that she could leave so easily. You mope around the house most nights, mom. Doesn’t she know how much it hurts you?” He didn’t like seeing his mom like that. She was usually all smiles and lovey with Ujana but without her at home Ariya had no one to be lovey with. It was a change that he didn't approve of or like at all.

“Your mother wouldn’t have gone if she knew.” She stepped closer and finally closed the distance between them. Her hand moved out to pat him on the head before she messed up his dreads. “I can deal with a bit of loneliness if it means your mother is happy, alright?” Her hand moved down to the side of his face where she used her thumb to swipe some tears off his cheek. “Don’t worry about me. This anger you feel on my behalf needs to stop.”

Her words made him grit his teeth. So his mom really was lonely without his mother. It made him hate Ujana a little bit more. Even if she didn’t know what she’d done he was mad at her. As Ariya’s hand went to his face he couldn’t help that more tears spilled over. As she told him not to worry he shook his head and wrapped his arms around her so that he could hide his face against her. “Mom!”
