What was the Negaverse really fighting for?

It was a question Pendour hadn't considered so much until a recent conversation, but now she was repeating it over and over in her head every time she powered up. Her ancestor would have some ideas, maybe, but even talking to him about the tamest topics could lead to subtle insults or questioning of her life choices.

Asking about the war seemed liked opening a particularly slimy and unpleasant can of worms.

Somehow, asking a Negaverse agent directly was the less intimidating option here. She'd had decent luck with them being civil, lately, instead of going for her eyes or her soul, so when she felt the captain's aura in the distance, she turned off the main road and into a mess of alleyways in order to follow it.

Now, all there was to do was to hope her luck was not about to run out.

Captain Crocoite was not in his usual foul mood. This was a new kind of irritated, one he did not feel as often as others might. He was listless, frustrated. Maybe he was just bored. Whatever it was, it had him out on the prowl. Now that he had a youma under his control, he felt much more confident in his ability to face off with the strong knights and senshi out in the city.

After all, the youma was expendable, and could always return. That was much easier to risk in a fight than his own being. He had a lot of important things to do, and could not be bogged down in injuries or that whole dying thing.

Feeling an aura not too far from where he was prowling, Crocoite headed toward it and was not all that surprised to find that the source seemed to have spotted him, as well, and was waiting. Curious, but not unheard of: lots of senshi and knights tended to want to talk. Which was fine by Crocoite, most of the time.

Except on nights like this, when he was feeling a little blood thirsty.

"I see you were looking for me, as I was looking for you. And here we are, in a fittingly dark and gloomy alley."

He spoke before she saw him. Pendour didn’t like the dark. Ever since the eye, she’d gotten jumpy in situations that limited her vision even more, and she’d spent a long moment hovering at the cusp of the alleyway before heading inside. Now, she squinted into the shadows. She could make out more of his face and outfit as her sight adjusted.

“The alley doesn’t have to be some kind of omen,” she said, looking him over. There was something sleek about his outfit, and she didn’t immediately see any youma pieces on him, or cracks along his skin, or anything at all that marked him as particularly broken. Well, the aura was dark, but that wasn’t enough to put her off just yet. She took half a step forwards.

“And we can always go out to the street, anyway. It’s cleaner, and there aren’t even too many people out to gawk at our clothes,” she said. Her voice was quiet and her tone light. She kept some distance, knowing better than to let her guard down so soon, but she did manage a small, soft smile.

"No, I suppose it doesn't have to be, but that is one of the delights of being who we are. The choices we make can determine such things for us. I've already made a few decisions tonight, and am curious how they will effect our current situation."

Crocoite grinned at her without any humor or kindness reaching his eyes. They glimmered in the dark anyway, as he leaned on his cane in an impression of being relaxed. In reality, his every muscle was coiled and ready, his body all but burning to spring into action.

She seemed innocent enough. She engaged in a conversation with an obvious enemy, perhaps for the sake of avoiding a fight herself. Was she scared, or was she peaceful? Perhaps the two walked hand in hand. He often found that to be the case, and liked to pry them apart: see where the lines lay. How far could someone be pushed before their fear turned from peace, or they simply broke apart.

"Are you scared of the dark, then? That's fair. You never know what might be lurking, just below the surface of those shadows."

“Afraid?”

Of course she was afraid. Fear was her constant companion. It curled up with her in bed and found its way into her dreams. It certainly followed her down alleyways at night and was made even stronger by dark auras like his. After a lot of time and a lot of therapy, it no longer had so much power over her, but that was not a story that she needed to tell to an agent of the Negaverse, especially not one who smiled like a predator.

“I’m here in the darkness, aren’t I?”

She knew better than to come closer when someone looked at her like that, and after a moment, she thought better of staying where she was. She took a few steps backwards, back into the street, letting the yellow lamplight wash over her again.

“What about you, shadow-lurker?” she asked, her voice still conversational and gentle as could be even as she tensed slightly. “How do you feel about the light?”

The crocodile watched his prey thoughtfully, keeping his calm as he quietly spoke to her in the gloomy evening. He had a soft smirk on his face, though his eyes were cold as he listened to her patiently. Even curiously, as if he were taking notes for later. Of course, if there was a later or not was entirely up to the chance of the evening, and the choices they made.

The illusion of choice was one of his favorite hunting tactics.

He watched as she backed up, tilting his head slightly to the side.

"I have no reason to fear the light," he said, picking up his cane and walking briskly toward her. His steps were confident and quick, though he did not immediately attack. He stopped short of her, just at the edge of the pool of light the lamp was casting. Grin broadening, he did his best to seem intimidating. "See? No harm done. At least, not to me."

His grip tightened on the staff of his cane, the big metal head of the crocodile handle catching the light.

"Okay," she said, her voice soft as soft, her eyes gentle, even under the fear. "That's good. I don't want you to be afraid."

Of course it would be nice if all it took was a little lamplight to protect her from Chaos and darkness, but she was well aware that it wasn't that simple. All she really wanted right now was to be able to see clearly, and as he followed her into the street, she got that wish.

What she saw wasn't exactly good. She was more aware then ever of the wicked glint in his eyes, of the metallic shine to the cane that looked like it had some weight to it. She had her ocarina out and she held it close to her chest, wondering if she should try to use her magic to deescalate this, but in the end, she held off.

She had the sinking feeling that she might need it more in a few moments.

"So are you going to hit me, or are you just going to keep making these, um," she waved a hand, "Riddle threats?"

Maybe not the best way to phrase things, but she wanted to know.

"Hit you? My dear, no, why would I use such brutish tactics to fight a lady?" Crocoite laughed at his own playfully mocking response, shaking his head at how ridiculous it sounded. He shook his head, holding up one finger on his hand before showing her his cane. The hand not holding the cane then moved down to join the other in holding it. One hand on the cane itself, the other on the metal neck of the crocodile head, Crocoite took a moment before pulling the two apart.

In one hand he now held the hollow wooden cane that acted as a sheath, and the other held the sword attached to the crocodilian pommel.

"Stabbing, I think, will be much more direct. More civilized, in a duel, don't you think?"

Crocoite was so very pleased that his weapon upgraded to something a little less brute force, though swinging a cane at people had worked rather effectively so far. Now he had the choice between that raw kind of aggression, or using the pointy, sharp blade now hidden inside the cane. It was not the best for slashing with its round shape, but it would certainly help him drive his point home.

Clicking his tongue behind his teeth, he would have to write that one down as a mental note to use later. At least he was starting to feel better, the promise of scaring, or scarring, this new opponent perking him up. He charged forward, drawing his sword back in an attempt to ready a stab.

Pendour thought that she understood a little about what was going through this Captain's head. He was almost like the half-youma who'd maimed her, with all the drama and the drawing out of things, as if getting fear out of people was some kind of twisted game. It was not surprising, then, when he showed off his weapon.

The surprise came when the cane twisted apart to reveal a sword. Her eyes widened.

At least they were here, under the lamplight, where she could see the glint of metal before it was thrust at her. In the shadows of the alley, that could have gotten nasty, quickly.

Pendour had never learned to throw a punch. When she tried to prepare for these things, it was all about the defense, the dodging. With her Squire reflexes, she stepped out of the blade's path easily.

Then she shook her head, sadly, at the Captain, and decided that now was the time for her magic. She put the ocarina to her lips.

Magic - When Pendour plays her ocarina, the negative emotions of those within five feet of her fade and are replaced with a feeling of pleasant relaxation. One can shake the effect with enough concentration, but it can serve as a distraction for those who would do Pendour harm. She can channel this magic for 45 seconds.

Magic. The White Moon had a very annoying habit of using magic when it was up against a wall. He was immediately grumpy, seeing the ocarina and knowing something was about to happen.

He did not fear senshi or knight magic: so far, he had no reason to. He did know, though, that it would be annoying. He was not wrong.

Stopping, he felt something very unfamiliar to him, and for a moment he was not even sure what it was. He felt peaceful. Actually calm, as opposed to the calm he portrayed when he was trying to be intimidating. For a moment, he was not sure why he was even trying to attack her, but he was not going to let himself be tricked so easily.

"Cute song," he said, almost genuinely, forcing himself to hold his weapon up despite the urge to just banish it and let bygones be bygones. "But it won't be enough to save you." Still, he did not seem too inclined to attack again, though he was sure it was because of the magic.

The magic worked, at least as much as it was going to. Pendour watched something shift on the Captain's face. His wicked grin turned to something softer, and Pendour allowed herself a single moment to wonder what he would be like if he was not carrying around so much anger with him.

She knew she was probably not going to find out, not tonight. She'd held onto hope early on in the evening that she could find someone willing to talk to her, but this man seemed so bent on intimidation and violence that she'd changed what she was hoping for.

Now, she just wanted to get home without ending up stabbed again.

This was probably her best chance for that. She cut off the music suddenly, halfway through a phrase, and without giving the agent any time to shift his emotions again, she began sprinting away.

Crocoite does not approve of feeling NICE. He vows revenge.

Crocoite did not like this feeling. This... peace. It was not something he was used to, and certainly not something he asked for. He rather liked to think himself happy with who he was and what he was doing, so to be shown something could feel different, maybe even better, than what he was used to really rattled him in a way he was far too proud to admit.

So he stood there stiffly, doing his best to pretend he was not effected at all.

He looked almost like he was wincing.

When she turned to high tail it away from him he thought about chasing her, but the magic stayed his hand. The poor thing, she was probably scared and he had no business making her feel worse. That thought alone was enough to make him shudder, his soul rejecting the very idea of such niceties innately.

Shaking his head, he realized the magic had released him by the time she was good distance away from him. yes, he could catch up, but he was actually rather embarrassed about this whole thing. Still, if he ever saw her again, he was absolutely not going to hold back. He would not give her a chance to mess with his head.

He would show her just what his true nature really was.

Pendour ran and ran, zigzagging through alleys and dashing down streets until it became clear that the Captain wasn't even trying to follow her. She collapsed in a breathless heap behind a dumpster, where she powered down, steadied herself, and then stood up to begin the journey home.

She never knew what effect her magic was going to have until she used it. It always seemed to calm her friends, but what happened exactly was a little different depending on what was going through their heads at the time.

With the crocodile agent, she hadn't stayed around to watch his face, but since he wasn't on her heels, she hoped that it had cut through whatever he carried that made him chase after people in the middle of the night.

If she was very, very lucky, it might even make him think.
