There are many superstitions and beliefs in Tendaji, often originating from the culture and gods of each individual region. Wherever one goes, they might find a new routine or practice based on the region they are in. However, there seems to be one thing that all Tendaji residents believe in - the power and beauty of a meteor shower.
The rare celestial event is seen as a blessing, and this one just so happens to have appeared right when the New Year began. Oh what luck and what a great omen - this must be a sign of good fortune for the year to come.

After having been rescued from the villainous spider that had scared her to the point of tears, and likely making a fool of herself in the process, Masika sat on the log near the camp with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders for comfort. She could only imagine that Eurig thought her a complete scaredy cat after the way she'd shrieked and clung to him. One hand came up to wipe at the remnant tears in her eyes when a light above caught her attention. Being that it was late she didn't think a bright light should occur. What she saw was enough to take her breath away. A small gasp and she was captivated.
"Eurig! Eurig look..." She called to the man who had agreed to be her bodyguard. Her eyes left the sky and she found him quickly, a smile clearly on her face before she pointed upward to make sure he knew where she was wanting him to look. Her own gaze returned to the amazing scene in the sky. "Isn't it beautiful?"

When Eurig had taken on this 'job' he wasn't expecting such vicious attacks so early on. Of course when Masika had started panicking he'd assumed the worst, had even gone so far as to brace himself for a fight, and when he found the spider...Well, he had to fight back a laugh. The last thing he wanted to do was make light of her fears and yet...Eurig had just picked up the arachnid, hid it from view and walked it a safe distance away to properly release it.
He made his way over to the log with two steaming cups of warm tea and honey. The bulky earthling settled down next to her, making sure to keep a respectable amount of space between them before offering one of the cups to her as a peace offering. "Are you ok-?"
At first he was worried that another spider had showed up and was ready to just move camp to avoid more surprise encounters. But then... "Woah." Eurig's eyes practically glowed looking up at the sky. "There's so many of them!"

She was thankful to him for not teasing her about her phobia, though she wouldn't blame him if he did. A lot of people thought it funny or even stupid that she feared something so much smaller than herself. When she noticed that he was offering her a cup she returned her eyes to him, looking at the mug as she grasped it with both hands and accepted it. "Thank you." One hand of hers gently touched his but she tilted it upward so that contact was limited. When she had her mug in both hands she brought it close and tucked her elbows in so that she could hold it in her lap. Tilting her head back she looked up at the sky once more and bit down on her bottom lip with a smile. The sight was amazing. The shining stars racing past them had her attention for a while. "Aren't they gorgeous?" The sparkles were reflected in her eyes and she found she was more captivated with the tails of the stars than the stars themselves.

Getting used to being around an actual 'ladylike' lady was still a new concept for Eurig. He'd spent his entire life surrounded by women, with the exception of Ujiri, but at the end of the day they'd been far more...extroverted? Brash? Confident? Impulsive, maybe, but that didn't really describe Mama Ariya all that well. Masika was more demure in her actions and that made him all the more protective of her.
He tucked one leg up closer towards the log and stretched the other out in front of him. It was much of a relaxed, lounging position as Eurig could manage at the moment. As much as he was enjoying the travelers lifestyle it could still be hell on his legs. "Yeah, they are..." Slipping down a little Eurig sat on the ground beside the log and used the fallen timber as back support. The leafling laid his head back on it so he could see Masika if he wanted as well as the sky.
"...When I was a kid my father told me a story about shooting stars. Would you...maybe want to hear it?"

His movement brought her gaze down from the sky so that she could see what he was doing. Masika noticed him sliding down to the ground and looked around quickly for a second. She had to shimmie down the log just a bit to grab the other blanket but when she had it she moved back to sitting next to Eurig. "Here.. Put this behind you so you don't hurt your back." She didn't wait him to be sore or stiff if it could be helped. As he mentioned a story about the stars she smiled and gave a nod of her head. "If you don't mind sharing." Once she was comfortable again she looked back up at the sky and took a small sip from her mug, holding it with both hands for the warmth.

"Hmm?" Eurig turned his eyes from the stars towards Masika and the tips of his ears warmed. With the light of the fire bouncing off her eyes it made it look like the stars had come to life inside of her..."Oh, thanks." He raised up just enough to position it behind him and with a happy little hum the hulking mass of a man cozied up against the blanket.
Eurig took a draw from the warm tea and let it settle into his stomach before speaking. "A long time ago when the world was still young the sun and moon shared the same sky. They walked hand in hand and made sure everything was as it needed to be." He raised his hand, motioning to different points in the sky as he talked. "But then one day they got into an argument. The moon thought that the sun was too bright and she wanted the cool of night to last longer. The sun, however, wanted his warmth to stretch as far as it could, for as long as it could."

"Of course. Wouldnt want you to be sore later because you had your back like that. If thats not comfortable you can always lean against me instead." Masika had sat leaned up against her moms legs when she was little. She failed to notice anything astray as she hugged her own blanket more tightly to her. As he spoke and pointed to the sky she looked. Her elbows rested on her thighs as she brought the tea mug to her lips again. It rested there for a second as she smiled at the story then she took another sip. When he mentioned the argument her eyes left the shooting stars so that she could look at him instead. "Oh no.." Arguing over something like that didn't seem worth it. Not if there were true feelings involved.

The temptation to definitely not do that was very strong, and yet, Eurig hadn't been raised in a household that valued 'personal space'. So, instead of declining her offer, he leaned over and laid his head against her leg.
"It was bad and it drove a wedge between them. The Sun thought if the Moon would just calm down and listen to him that she would see things his way. The Moon, however, felt herself getting smaller and smaller until eventually...she fled." He made a little 'popping' noise with his mouth, then brought his hands together and pulled them apart.
"At first the Sun was angry. He was so mad that he burned bright enough that it became day for years on end and only then did he notice the damage he was doing. His wrath had scorched the world that they built together. So, he calmed and tried to reach out to her...but she refused to come back."

Masika couldn't help but find the sight breath taking. The stars as they streaked across the any illuminated it for a short time and left a trail of glitter behind them. One hand left her mug and lightly trailed fingers through Eurig's hair as he leaned against her leg. It was an absent minded thing that she did as she sipped from her mug and contiued to watch the stars. The popping sound that he made caused her to giggle a little. "I would run too if I thought I was getting smaller and smaller." No one wanted to completely disappear. "Awe, but if he was trying to fix it.." She leaned back a little so that she could look up a bit more. Her eyes were glued to the open sky. The dark color and spots of light. Masika loved it.

"He just kept taking and taking until the light inside of her started to die." The thought of becoming smaller out of sheer despair...It was heart breaking. He subconsciously leaned into her touch, shifting a little so he was putting more weight onto her. The mug in his hand eventually made it's way to the ground; left forgotten in his story telling.
"When she wouldn't talk to him he started sending her letters, but they kept falling out of the sky. So he threw them with such force that they shot across the night sky and left trails of fire. The stars you're seeing now? They're his love letters, letting her know that even though they're separated he's still thinking of her."

Masika didn't seem to notice that he leaned more heavily against her but her hand still went through his hair on gentle strokes. Her eyes went from one star to the next and even followed a shooting star across what she could see. The more of the tale she heard the more her eyes started to tear up. "How romantic.. I will never look at the stars the same again." Evidence of ones love was a pure way to view the stars. "I hope I find someone who shows me that much love in the future." The hybrid felt some jealousy over the moon at that moment. Her mug was set in her lap so she could wipe her tears without disrupting the attention Eurig was getting.

He hadn't thought much about it as a child, but now that Eurig was older he could only imagine the kind of heart ache that would cause. Being so far away from the one you loved, after having a fight like that...It pulled at him just thinking about it. He was so caught up in his musings that at first he didn't notice anything was off with Masika, but then...
He looked over at her and frowned. "Are you okay?" Had he told the wrong story? "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you."

His question made her look down at him, her hand finally leaving his hair so that she could wipe her eyes more thruoughly. "Yeah. I'm fine, it was just really touching. To have someone love you that much would be amazing." Once she was she that all of the tears were wiped away she looked down at her lap, attempting to hide behind her hair, and grabbed hold of her tea mug again. "Sorry, I really liked the story." She would have to tell that story to the little girl she'd found. It was such a beautiful story. "I'm kinda jealous of the moon now." She lightly figheted with the mug in her hands.

Sighing a little, Eurig nodded and smiled up at her sympathetically. "It's pretty crazy to imagine that someone could love someone else enough to send stars to them. That's really powerful." Musing on it didn't make the awkwardness he felt at making her cry any less moving. Reaching up, Eurig patted her leg and tried his best to comfort her.
"Don't be. The Sun loves her, but she's destined to always be alone. You should aspire for more than that, Miss Masika. Don't settle for anything less than something you can hold." And one day, with a heart as kind as hers, she would have it. That much Eurig was sure of.
