“If there are any Generals around, I would love to talk about recruitment!” Ren Wilhelm called out over the city, his hands cupped around his mouth. He was on the roof of the tallest building he could get access to, his mountain climbing gear tossed to the side for now. Yes, he probably could have just paid whoever owned the building to allow him access to the roof, but then that would give away his identity and that was an important part of this secret club, right?

Ren shoved his hands into the pockets of his alpaca wool coat, and kicked at the debris that littered the roof. He knew it was going to be cold, but he really hoped he wouldn’t be waiting all night for someone to show up. Around his neck hung binoculars, in case any movement along the roofs around him caught his attention.

He trusted his sources. This mysterious Negaverse seemed like it would be incredibly interesting, and Ren was known to get bored quickly. But with weapons and magic, even he expected his desire to delve deeper into this unknown Dark Kingdom would last quite some time.

“Okay I get it, you don’t talk about Fight Club. Well, if there’s an application I can submit online, that would be great to know,” he said loudly over the city skyline. He doubted anyone on the ground could hear him, but the various rooftops should help carry his voice. He just had to be careful not to get the attention of the other side.

For nearly half an hour, Ren was alone.

Axinite had half a mind to just pull his starseed to stop the nuisance, but there was too much in this oddity that needed to be unpacked. A Captain had reported it to him, confused and uncertain on what to do. A newly promoted officer who couldn't reach his General. Axinite's doors were always open, and now, here he was.

Curious, of course, how this civilian knew about the Negaverse.

Shouting about Generals. About the Negaverse.

Axinite had first teleported to a building near the reported civilian, listened for a bit, and then when he'd had enough he teleported just behind him.

"You're very fortunate someone hasn't called the police on you," he noted. "Some might think you're crazy, shouting some things from the rooftops. You seem...passionate," he suggested.

Axinite was not particularly tall, nor did he look particularly intimidating. He had a soft, tired face, and his uniform didn't demand a second glance. He was professional, as always, and carried with him an air of authority.

Ren didn’t mind the wait. He brought snacks. He had his phone. He had time to contemplate his existence in the universe and if trying to join some sketchy sounding military-ish organization was really something he wanted to do.

Yes, yes he did.

He knew only what he’d been told, but if there were monsters and magic trying to take over the world, he wanted to be on the winning side.

The arrival of some orange haired man in a cosplay outfit out of thin air cemented what he wanted.

“Even if someone did, I don’t know how they’d get up here to arrest me. At least not before I could get back down,” he shrugged and grinned, having turned around to give the man a good look. He knew he should have been startled that some mysterious stranger appeared out of nowhere on a roof that took him a good bit of time to climb up, but his sources told him these people often appeared and disappeared as they pleased.

“You’re a General? So... I salute?” Ren asked, obviously amused, but his voice wasn’t mocking. He partially lifted up his hand as though to start the gesture, but waited for further instruction before following through or not. He was trying to join this guy’s club.

“Ren Wilhelm,” he introduced himself, grinning wider at being called passionate. “Is this my interview? I heard on the street about your organization and I want in.”

Axinite regarded him with caution. Things like this didn't happen. That a civilian, a stranger to the organization knew they existed meant that someone was running around with loose lips and the last thing he wanted to do was deal with some information breach that outed them faster than he could could cover up.

"A General King," he corrected. "Probably the highest ranking member you'll find yourself ever interacting with." Especially if he needed to pull his starseed to keep him quiet.

But, an information breach was incredibly problematic, and Axinite did his best to remain calm. If this was being treated as an interview, good. He had plenty of questions.

"It's nice to meet you, Ren. I am Axinite. I will ask two things of you. The first, how you came to hear of us, and the second, what made you want to join us?"

“Your Majesty,” Ren corrected himself, lowering his salute in the sweeping motion of a bow. Once again, there was nothing mocking about his tone, just playful. “I consider this an honor that you would consider speaking to me.”

What a strange organization. He’d heard about Generals, but not about General Kings.

“I own a business that deals with information. Social media posts, mostly. We collect the data and offer it to other companies what would benefit from what we’ve compiled,” he said with a smile.

“That’s how I found out about this Negaverse. People have been talking about domestic terrorists and the like for years. Some claimed that it was really the Negaverse behind such… horrible things. Monsters that roam the city and attack people. Coma patients with no chance of revival. People with deadly weapons attacking cosplayers, and the like," he explained.

"So… if there is some magical war going on in my backyard, I want to be on the winning side.”

Axinite was nearly certain that Ren wasn’t taking any of this seriously, but many young men had lost themselves in foolishness. But.

He had a business that dealt in information--something that would have been very valuable to have access to. Of course, it was problematic that people might be talking about the Negaverse at all, so Axinite saw the immediate benefit of someone who had some ability to not only collect information but spread the control of it.

“Alright,” he agreed after a moment.

“...But if you’re going to join us, I have to warn that it’s not all fun and games. It is a war, Ren. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but it takes a bit of commitment. It’s not like you just sign a document and you’re one of us. If you want to join us, you have to make a sacrifice to get this power.”

He looked at him; he didn’t want to scare him away from it now that he was considering giving him a chance, but it wasn’t in his nature to be dishonest. Not when he dealt with the Information branch.

“The rewards and power that follow are immense. But there’s a bit of pain when you get started. I have to modify your starseed to awaken whatever power you’ve got hiding inside of you.”

He could have reached into his own chest to show off a starseed, but he wasn’t going to do something so needless just for dramatics. “Something like a ‘soul’,” he clarified before Ren could ask. “The thing inside of you that ties you to this universe, the little piece of you with untapped potential that just needs to be awakened.”

“I don’t imagine I would have much of a choice at this point, would I?” he smiled despite Axinite’s rather serious expression. “I understand the risks involved. I’m quite ambitious, and I’m not afraid of commitment.”

He was about to ask what the entry fee was, because surely these kinds of secret organizations needed money to run them, right? But surprisingly, Axinite just told him there was pain involved.

“I’m not afraid of pain, either,” he said, a little more seriously this time. There was a lot to take in, but he specialized in gathering information and applying it as needed. Even if what this General King was saying sounded absolutely ridiculous, he didn’t seem the type to just waste time with making things up for the hell of it.

“Alright, what do I need to do for you to modify my starseed? Meditate? I hate meditating, but I’ll do it if I have to,” he scrunched up his face in a sour expression. He was too active to meditate. It was a waste of time in his opinion.

Axinite looked at him for a few seconds, but it felt so long to him. Like, in one single look, he’d somehow know all of Ren’s worth, all of his value, all of his potential.

He wasn’t much of a risk taker, and while he had a few options, he finally decided to settle on giving him a chance. It would cost energy to bring him into the Negaverse--more than it would have taken to just youmafy him, but Axinite didn’t like to lose resources. Energy, he could regain. An Agent, not so much.

He exhaled and then nodded, like that was enough to cement his decision.

“You just stay still and let me do this,” he said, and before Ren could move away, he reached to place his hand on his chest.

In his chest.

Axinite knew where to find a starseed, how to hold it, and more importantly--how to push Chaos into and make someone something more.

He gripped the starseed. He pushed.

He paused.

“Oh,” he said suddenly, because he knew what that resistance meant.

He wasn’t just anyone; he was a Corrupted Senshi.

“...Hold on, Ren. As it turns out, you’re actually very special. This won’t take long. Just trust me,” he said, voice soft and reassuring, now.

He pushed, again, eager to see this through--eager to see just who he was dealing with.

Ren’s expression shifted from a smirk when Axinite reached his hand to his chest, to something more distraught when it was pushed into his chest, and back to a somewhat uncomfortable smirk when told he was actually very special.

“Well, yes, I thought that was obvious,” he forced a laugh through the initial pain he could feel from Axinite pushing energy into him. But his sense of humor only held out until the pain really started to take hold. His half-grin remained, but he gritted his teeth and pressed his tongue against them to stop himself from hissing at the discomfort. He would just treat this like a workout pushed too far. Like climbing a building in order to join some secret organization.

He could feel the power coursing through him, pushed into him, as though something was making an old key fit into a rusty lock. The groan that escaped was covered by a forced chuckle, and he was tempted to grab onto Axinite’s arm for support, but stood his ground and then something clicked and--

He looked down at himself as he tried to catch his breath, his hands reaching for the shining gems along his outfit, pleased by the tinkling noise they made as they collided.

But then he frowned, his hands flexing and gripping the air with nothing else in them.

“Wait, I thought we’re supposed to get a weapon.”

Axinite retracted his hand as soon as it was safe to do so, but seemed to hover nearby in case there were any negative repercussions from the Chaos. He gave him a habitual check over before his eyes snapped up to meet Ren’s.

No, the Corrupted Senshi’s.

“I told you, you’re special,” he pointed out. His hand free from the cavern of his chest, he summoned two things from subspace--a small, clear bag of cookies, and a still cool energy drink. He presented them with the simple explanation, “If you feel dizzy, please. We can sit down for a moment if you need to. You handled the pain well, but I don’t want hubris to bring you any harm.”

Offer presented, he continued, “Agents, that is--officers like me--get weapons. But your starseed is different. You have a unique power inside of you that we can’t make. You’re a senshi. You’ve got magic in you. You’ll have that, instead.”

Ren took the bag of cookies and energy drink that was handed to him, thinking it unwise to refuse something when he was being handed something directly. And from someone who seemed to do this often enough to even have those things readily available.

Although the thought of not getting a weapon was a bit of a letdown. Still, he could appreciate that his new magical outfit didn’t seem as stuffy as the General King’s.

They would have time to figure things out. And if Ren could now use magic he would just have to make that work for him. Just as he would figure out what made Senshi so special, or if it was just lip service.

“Okay, so no weapon. When do I get a cape?” he asked with a grin.
