Prompt 4: The mail is always bad this time of year, but it seems like something's gone a little extra wrong. An old letter arrives shows up with no return address, no name on it; it's impossible to tell who it is from or how it got there, given that it might have arrived in your mailbox, your front door, or maybe it even just showed up inside your house. If you open it, the letter is dated from decades ago and contains some surprising information; it is a letter lost to time and contains some secret. The content of the letter are up to the player; it might contain a confession of love, an admission of guilt, the secret of some crime--no matter what the letter contains, it leaves you with news to reflect on. Do you try to seek out anyone mentioned in the letter? Do you investigate or try to hand the letter over to someone else? Does the content of the letter reflect your life in some way? ...Do you have to worry about someone breaking into your house to leave strangely coded messages?

Tyrannosaurus was fairly sure someone was playing a game with her. Which was fine, as she loved games. Particularly grindy games that required a lot of leveling and farming. And, of course, fetch quests. There was always a quest line that involved getting one item and delivering it to someone else, so they could in turn give the main character a different item to take to someone else. Eventually they always led to some important plot or a good item, which T-Rex was always happy to put the work in for.

Though, really, she was also just a completionist with a lot of patience.

When she found the letter sitting on her apartment's doorstep, she was all too happy to find herself confused and intrigued. There was no name or any indication it had ever been in the mail, and inside the unsealed envelope was a simple message with a poorly drawn picture of a tree with an upraised root. While not quite as threatening as a Black Hand or as inviting as a letter from a dragon on top of a mountain, it was a quest worth starting nonetheless.

Clearly, she had to find this tree.

The most logical place to start was the park, and the adventurous teenager was on the job. Powered up, she felt more than ready to look at every single tree from every angle to find the one in the picture. Until she started to notice just how many trees there were in this park.

Maybe there was a way to cheat this a little?

Standing under the largest tree she could find, T-Rex lifted the picture and compared it to the tree in front of her. There was nothing particularly similar about it, as this one had no exposed roots like the one in the picture. The words on the paper had nothing important to say, only mysteriously saying 'chipped cup'.

But T-Rex had faced mysterious notes and vague treasure maps before, so she was sure she was on the right track. She just had to figure out a bit of a hack to make the elimination process of the trees in the area go a bit quicker. Considering burning or cutting them down when she was sure they were wrong was not an option, she was not entirely sure how to proceed on that front.

Really, she needed more help. More eyes, searching for the prize. Of course, any loot would have to go to her. That was only fair, as the party leader. Right?

Bringing the paper down, Sailor Tyrannosaurus scanned the area first with her senses, then turned to look around for anyone nearby. She was thankfully not clad in the worst outfit for patrolling in the snow, but she did want to make quick work of this if she could. She was hoping to sense someone nearby, but was still learning how to manage that ability. Even if she did think she felt something, she was not sure what it meant. Good guy, bad guy, random dog: who knew what power level she was picking up with her internal scouter? Sighing, she moved to continue her hunt, looking at the paper and then up at the trees again with much less enthusiasm than before. That did not mean she would quit, of course.

There was a senshi somewhere, of that much Paracelsian was certain. The saying went "there are bees in them thar trees," but it seemed today that there were senshi in them thar trees today. Or at least in the area of the trees. He approached the twinkling aura, no hesitation in his step. "Excuse me," he said, his gaze directly fixed on the senshi. "Are you looking for something? You've been in this area for some time now." He wasn't entirely sure what answer he expected, but if the senshi didn't attack him on sight, that would be a good sign at least.

T-Rex nearly jumped out of her cute jacket, hat threatening to fly off her head, at the sudden voice. However polite it was, she had somehow failed to sense the being nearby, despite her efforts to use her 'internal scouter'. Definitely needed to work on that one.

"Er."

She paused for a long moment, trying to approach how to answer the question. They were definitely not on her team, as far as she could tell from what limited things she knew about this whole war business, but he was also being calm and had not yet punched her in the face. Maybe he was trying to gather information, thinking she was doing something important, but that would get him no where.

She was literally looking at trees.

"Well. I got this letter, but I don't know where it came from. I was trying to find the tree in the picture, but it turns out there are a LOT of trees. And it now occurs to me that this picture might not even be from this city. Uh oh. Hm." Frowning, she looked at the paper in her hand again, almost forgetting she was talking to someone, as wrapped up in her quest as she was.

Paracelsian offered a nod of understanding, then held his hand out. "May I have a look? A second opinion shouldn't hurt, I suppose." His hand lowered slightly as he realized something. "And I suppose I should offer you my name. Captain Paracelsian. And you are Sailor...?" He tried to surmise her sphere from her getup. Something to do with exploration? Excavation? Granted, there wasn't always a one-to-one correspondence between sphere and uniform, but sometimes there would be a giveaway.

"Of course!" T-Rex had no reason not to trust a complete stranger with her odd little message that appeared out of no where, so she handed the paper over to Paracelsian easily enough. She also scooted closer, looking at the picture from beside him as if the new angle might give her some kind of breakthrough.

The lightbulb did not go on.

"My name is Sailor Tyrannosaurus. I'm trying to get T-Rex, or Tyranno, or something like that going as a nickname, though. I think it's a bit of a mouthful, even if it is awesome." She grinned, fixing her jacket a bit as she posed, though her hat slipped a bit too far down and she had to fix it. It would take some getting used to, having a hat.

Wait, did he say Captain?

"Senshi of Fossils! Nice to meet you, Paras!"

"Paras? Isn't that a... ah, never mind," Paracelsian muttered. He vaguely remembered the little mushroom buggle from Pokemon, but also from the memes concerning its evolution. Poor mushroom buggle. At the thought, he chuckled and a quiet "I hope I don't turn into a mushroom" slipped out of his mouth. He returned to form as quickly as he slid out of it. "Let's see here..."

It was a little weird to have a senshi sidled up next to him, and Paracelsian tried not to shudder. The paper's contents were cryptic: a tree with an upturned root and the words "chipped cup." "This isn't much to go off of," he said quietly. "I have an idea, though it's completely based in guesswork. A chipped cup sounds like it could be a Negaverse Lieutenant's weapon, or perhaps even a Page's. The tree with the upturned root is more puzzling, but..." He reached into subspace and pulled out his communicator in its collapsed pen form. "Would you mind if I took a picture of this and brought it back? I could reference the database to see if we have anyone with this sort of item in our ranks or among our logged encounters. If I find anything, well..." It wasn't easy for Negaverse agents to contact senshi for obvious and valid reasons. "I'll see if I can get the message to you one way or another."

Tyranno looked excited that the other got the reference, deciding then and there that his name would be Paras forever more. There was nothing for it now, after all, as he had proven to be one of her kind. Despite being on different teams, though it seemed not to be a problem right now anyway. As long as these guys, the Negaverse or whatever, were not causing problems or hurting people, she had no reason to fight them.

Especially not when they could help her figure something out. Peace as a benefit to both of them right now. Though, if asked, she would not know exactly what he was getting out of the deal.

Better not to worry about it, as long as the peace lasted unquestioned.

"Oh, you could do that? Yeah, go for it! I don't even know where it came from, so I'm all about finding more info. Minus the actually having to do the research part, which you seem keen on doing anyway! Foot work, though? That's my game. I'm great with fetch quests and hunting collectibles. If you find out where to start looking, I'll be all over it!"

She was not thinking how impractical it was to team up with a Negaverse Captain, just too excited by the promise of a quest and the formation of a small party to think out the logistics of it all.

Paracelsian nodded as he pulled his communicator out, opened it, and fiddled with it to get it to take a picture of the note. "That sounds like a fair arrangement. I've got my picture, and... one way or another, if I find anything, I'll make sure you know. This is your investigation, after all." It was a silly but charming venture, but it would be satisfying to see through anyway.

"I ought to take this back to the database. Keep an eye out for updates... in fact, next time I'll remember to bring my post-its and maybe I'll leave one on a tree here." It was less precise than he liked, but it was something. He took a few steps away, still scrutinizing the photo of the letter on his communicator.

FIN!

"That sounds soooo cool. Having a database and all that. I mean, I googled, but... you know. Not all that helpful, really. But thanks! I appreciate the effort, at any rate! I'm not going to give up, not until I figure this out."

Which, she wanted to point out, was not giving up at all. It was just succeeding, and once one did that there was no reason to call it quitting. She did not think she needed to be so elaborate, though, and this was one of the few times she caught herself before letting her excitement force her into a talkative rant about nothing.

Though it was a close call.

"I'll keep an eye out for post-its! Thanks again!" She grinned and waved, before moving to look at the picture again and then bounce off to find some new trees to scrutinize.
