Tariel is a toddler a black Onyx Dragon. Classified as Demonic, you might expect him to be angelic for his cherub-like appearance. But for all of the mischief he tends to make, he's just a very active and curious child.
His journal is a rolled up scroll made with enchanted paper. He keeps it on his desk off to one side so that he can pull it open with one motion.

Background ~ Quite literally dropped on Sanctuary's doorstep by one of the (later) kidnapped dragons in the company of Dr. Kae Broken. He was left with a little note that called him by name: Yinzhu (meaning zither sound) and listed his item as a guzheng. No family name was given.
It was decided that since he was a dragon he should be paired up with a guardian as soon as possible, and that the matter remain secret. His guardian bonded with him almost instantly. She was not given any details other than his first name, and was instructed to give him a new name as soon as possible. As a result, Yinzhu rarely hears his dragon name unless he is in trouble...
His is one of many races of stone or metal dragon belonging to the demonic racial group. He is a black, onyx dragon controlling the realm of Shadow.
Current Location ~ Sanctuary.
Current Status ~ Happy and apparently oblivious.

Dragon form ~ This will be learned as time and training go on. He takes on the shape of a Chinese dragon with horns, maned lion's head, shadow-cloudlike wings on his shoulders, loooong body, a looooong maned tail, and wicked talons. The wings give him the ability to fly. He retains the powers over elemental shadow.
Fly ~ Wings give the ability to fly.
Limit: There is no powered attack or defense with this ability.
Half dragon form ~ This seems to be Tariel's default or favored form. His human form grows in size and takes on certain dragon characteristics: grey forked horns, shadow cloudlike wings on his shoulder, and a black-scaled and golden brush-tipped tail.
Human form ~ This is a static/default form for most dragons, but that he rarely uses. He has black hair and eyes, rich golden-brown skin.

Guzheng (goo jung) is a long, wide zither with 21, 25, or 26 strings. Strings are stretched out between two fixed bridges, with moveable bridges in the middle. Guzheng is often played high and fast, with the fingers strapped with claw-like picks that pluck or flutter the strings (in his case he uses his claws). It is also capable of lower notes.
The journal is actually an enchanted scroll that will not run low on paper space. It's an endless tome. For every "page" there may be little things like leaves, flowers, fabric, or anything else he might pin to its surface. For a plant, the enchantment preserves its form as it was in death. No drying out. Photos won't fade. That sort of thing.

Tariel lives with his new guardian in the dorms on the Sanctuary property. They share a bed for now, but there is another bed that is Tariel's safe zone or home base for playing quietly or reading. When he is there, Malaintha leaves him alone. It is also used for time outs when he has gotten out of hand.
