Quote:
Prompt 2: The downside to an army of little bunnies is that they burrow. There are holes peppering Destiny City, and with the fresh fallen snow it can be impossible to tell where they are hiding. The holes range from small holes to several feet deep, so can be a minor inconvenience to a potential hazard. On the bright side, sometimes you wind up covered in bunnies looking for warmth from their sudden guest. On the other hand, there are a rising number of trips to the hospital for twists and sprains.

Jadarite occasionally sought out trouble. She was becoming more proactive with engaging the enemy, especially now that two years had passed without her ending up with a promotion. Those battles had given her a few embarrassing tumbles, and even a punch to the face that had bruised. They had been calculated risks. The senshi and knights were powerful. She had gotten a few hits in, herself.

This was something else.

She’d been walking down the sidewalk in the middle of town, just looking for some energy and not meaning to be out for long. She hadn’t been paying much attention to what was at her feet. She had been one of the first in her elementary school class to give up superstitions about sidewalk cracks, and anyway, she was busy looking for targets and trying to be mindful of any auras in her periphery.

The cracks and even the dip in the concrete went unnoticed until Jada stepped on the wrong area and it all crumbled down into some kind of sinkhole. It wasn’t a long fall. She shrieked anyway, then coughed as dust began to settle in her lungs, her glasses, and worst of all, her hair.

Officer Griffin had been assigned as security detail for one of the Year-End company parties being hosted at one of the large hotels in Destiny City. Thankfully one of the employees had been nice enough to offer a small plate of food since the officer that was supposed to be here this evening called out sick. However, she knew the real reason and he would definitely owe her one once he got back.

Nonetheless, the evening came and went until the last of the cleaning crew was done putting away the stack of chairs in the conference room and the bags of trash were rolled out to the loading dock to be picked up in the morning. Finally, her evening shift was over as the last employee headed to their car and she was free to do the same.

At least that's what the plan was before she heard a startled shriek coming from the backside of the building.

Any thoughts she had of warming her hands in front of the heater were quickly dismissed as she withdrew her taser from her right holster and ran towards where she heard the noise echo from nearby. Instinct and training told her that if this was some sort of an attack she should hear multiple voices, or perhaps the attacker my try and flee. However, as she got closer all she heard was a fit of coughs and so she cautiously peered around the corner.

"Mam, my name is Officer Griffin, I'm with the Destiny City Police Department. Are you ok?" she asked before proceeding towards her.

Jadarite coughed once more, then took inventory. Her knees had buckled when she went down and as the adrenaline began to fade, she felt a sharp smart starting there, as well as in one of her hands that she’d used to catch herself with.

That was going to be a bruise that meant she couldn’t wear short skirts for at least a week.

She was trying to brush the worst of the dust off of everything when she heard the footsteps in the distance and scowled. Falling like this was already an annoyance, but causing a spectacle would be a real hindrance to her draining schedule. She glanced up, one eyebrow raising a fraction of an inch as she saw the shape of a woman who seemed the be on the force.

“Hello, officer,” she said. “I’m glad to see that the Destiny City Police have excellent response times.” She was aware that Infiltration was supposed to keep a positive relationship with the police, and she was trying, but her annoyance with the whole situation was still clear in her voice. At least she wasn’t immediately recognizable as a member of the Negaverse. The jacket and pencil skirt made her look like any other office worker.

“The sidewalk collapsed as I was walking. I could have broken something!” She huffed. “I think I’m getting off with a few bruises, but still, this must be some sort of building violation!”

A small white shape appeared from a smaller hole. Jada squinted and tried to find a clean enough are of fabric on her outfit to wipe her glasses, but even before she got a clear look at the animal, her scowl was getting deeper.

"Here," Officer Griffen carefully maneuvered her way towards the young woman and reached a hand out to her when near enough to help her up.

"It's probably best to stick to more well-lit areas or where the snow has been cleared. Most businesses have been laying down salt along the sidewalks along the main streets but most alley was or side streets go neglected." The area was usually used for garbage disposal rather than normal vehicle or foot traffic and with Waste Management canceling services due to inclimate weather conditions, it's no surprise that these areas weren't taken care of.

"I've also heard from fellow officers that those rabbits have been causing quite a bit of mayhem with their burrows." The Destiny City Memeorial Hospital was definitely seeing it's fair share of new patients recently.

As soon as her glasses were clean enough that she could see her surroundings, Jadarite took the officer’s hand and stepped out of the hole. She then took a moment to really look at the alleyway she’d found herself in. It was dark, utilitarian, and certainly a place more suited for a nightly maintenance crew than a young professional. Jada pressed her lips together.

“I take this shortcut every night,” she said. It was a lie, but she delivered it in the same clipped, assured tone she used for everything else. “The lighting isn’t the problem. It’s the ground. Technically the animals, I suppose.”

Now that she had a better view of the situation, she could see the two rabbits huddled in the spot where she’d been standing. Their fluff and their soft, wiggling noses did little to impress Jadarite. Her eyes narrowed.

“Are they not a concern?” She asked, gesturing towards them. “I understand that people might be willing to brush off incidents because they are cute and harmless, but they’re acting long pests. They could injure people or undermine infrastructures.”

Even this piece of ground would cost money to repair.

"Unfortunately it is up to the City Officials on how they handle the problem." The officer offered a rueful smile. "Right now, all they can really do is put out a public service announcement with a general warning to be careful."

To be honest, she wasn't sure this was something animal control was equipped to handle. Pest control companies, maybe... But there would likely be a public outcry on their methods considering it likely wouldn't be a capture and release scenario with this being more of an infestation.

"Do you need a ride to the hospital?" It would be on the way back to the precinct anyway. However, the young woman would need to sit in the back of the patrol vehicle.

Jadarite glanced at the other woman through the shadows. "Of course. You don't make the rules," she said, although there was still an certain edge to her voice, as if she wasn't entirely convinced that the officer shouldn't be trying to do something. "I'll write some emails."

Whatever government bureau this fell under should know better than to brush off multiple incidents of personal injury simply because the pests were cute. The rabbits were now blinking up at Jada with soft black eyes. Her frown deepened.

She froze momentarily at the mention of the hospital. While an examination might help her make her case to any officials, that also meant a lot of questions about her identity that she wasn't prepared to answer.

"It's not that serious," she said, taking a few steps back to show that she still could and resisting the urge to wince as pain shot up her leg. "I'll take the main roads home and get some ice."

Then perhaps she'd find a doctor to complain to once she powered down.

Unfortunately, all Erica could do was offer the young woman a ride.

Beyond the simple offer, it was her choice to either take it or find her own means of transportation. It did make Officer Griffin wonder if the reluctance was due to an insurance issue or perhaps a fear of doctors; which she could understand. Either way, it wasn't her position to push the subject especially since she wasn't in danger, and by the sounds of it, she may live close by.

"Well, if you insist on walking. At least allow me to give you the spare blanket in my vehicle." There was always at least one kept on hand, usually for herself while she waited for the car to heat up. "We'll be walking right by it," She offered since she parked on the main street in front of the hotel. Reserved space for security.

A blanket?

One of Jadarite's eyebrows rose, even as her lips pressed together.

On one hand, this almost seemed insulting. Free blankets were usually given to the homeless. Did Jadarite look homeless? Of course not. Her suit was perfectly fitted and freshly pressed. Admittedly it was fairly dirty but that was only because of the ridiculous collapsing road situation, not because she'd been out on the streets for any length of time.

On the other hand, she was injured, and this officer at least seemed to be attempting to do her job. Also, some extra warmth after a traumatic experience like that would not be unpleasant.

"All right," she said. "A blanket would be appreciated."

Without farther comment, she began walking in the direction that the officer had come from.

Erica smiled, nodded her head and lead the way towards her vehicle. Rather than it being one of the standard police vehicles, hers was one of the Ford SUV's which was much more suited for this kind of weather.

She opened up the back hatch which had some basic supplies including a first aid kit and emergency backpacks. Beside them was a small stack of navy blue blankets and a case of water bottles.

"Here you go," Officer Griffin picked up the one at the top of the stack and let gravity help unfold it. "It might be a bit itchy, but the wool will keep you warm." It was no small lap-sized blanket and would likely cover a twin-sized bed with enough drape on the side to reach the floor. "Please be safe and watch your step." The last part was spoken out of actual concern and not an attempt to mock the young woman for falling earlier.

Pride argued one last time against taking the blanket. It wasn't the type that could be fashioned into something that looked like a shawl. It was so long that it would brush along the ground and pick up dirt unless she was very careful, and no matter how careful she was, she would still certainly end up looking homeless.

She was Infiltration, though, and that meant more than simply writing her articles and doing her twitch streams. She also had to make good impressions while she was in this form, and that meant having a certain amount of graciousness.

In the end, she wrapped the blanket around her shoulders with a crisp nod. "Thank you," she said with all the sincerity she could muster, which was admittedly only some.

"I will be careful," she said. Then, limping slightly, she began to make her way home.
