Ok…so their last encounter hadn’t gone super well. He’d upset Nelson, and it just meant he had to dial it back a bit. Besides, he’d probably drive Jace crazy if he kept moping about while Jace had to keep studying. So - there was only one really good way to make things right. That was to just…hang out like normal! If he pretended that nothing was wrong and that everything was normal, then things could go back to that level of friendly sweetness that Nelson exuded. He was pretty sure that if Nelson’s spirit ever took shape it would be a big squishy marshmallow and that just made him ridiculously happy. Plus, he absolutely had to show Nelson what he’d discovered at the park. The poor kid had seemed kinda stressed out recently, and he hoped that what he had found, and maybe treating him to some bubble tea and mocha might cheer him up.

Nelson had been extremely happy, and a little nervous to receive the text from Xander, and had worked hard to get himself looking presentable, being sure to brush his hair and try to put it into some kind of style...though just opted to braid it back. It was kind of windy today and the idea of hair getting everywhere...it just didn’t seem nice.
He had one of Xander’s gifts with him, a scarf that had been that perfect shade of red that he knew his best friend loved, sure it was a few days before Christmas but…
Xander never seemed to dress well for the winter, and if Nelson could do something about it...well. He would. Hurrying to the park, Nelson stopped for two cups of cocoa and had a smile on his face as he neared Xander, the smile growing brighter as he got closer. “Hi! I’m here! I brought drinks and a gift for you...I’ve missed you.”
...It had been way too long...

“Awww I missed you too man!” Xander beamed, the hope he hadn’t done real damage last time they had spoken. “I brought you a Christmas gift!” He added, he hoped it wouldn’t be considered dumb. He had gotten this odd patchwork bunny that he thought somehow seemed very Nelson. He hoped it wouldn’t be taken wrong either. “How have you been?”

“You brought my gift too? I hope that means that we’re still seeing each other on Christmas…” Or Christmas eve...or the day after. Nelson felt himself growing sad at the thought that this could be the only time before the holiday that he would get to see Xander. ...That just didn’t seem right. Surely Q would want to see Jace…
They always hung out. All of them. But.
His heart was sinking slightly and he shook his head, drawing out the wrapped gift and holding it out to Xander. “This is only a pre Christmas gift, just something practical to keep you comfortable in the winter...I...I know that you don’t ever seem to want to dress for the cold so...I figured…I mean, it won’t be as warm as my arms around you, but maybe a close second?” The words slipped out before he had the chance to really think about them, and Nelson froze, his face going pink.

“Of course you’re seeing us for Christmas! I wouldn’t just get you this little thing I...” he stopped - blinking at what a Nelson said. He took the gift while he tried to think of how to reply. “Does... that mean if I wear this I don’t get that as an option?” He tried to sound flippant- it didn’t work. “I thought I really upset you last time I was trying to...” Trying to WHAT? He wasn’t even sure himself.

Nelson snorted before he could stop himself, again, his mind running off and doing what it pleased. “No, that’s not the case at all, if you want my arms around you if you’re cold...all you have to do is ask. I like them around you. You’re comfortable.” He paused and the flush seemed to vanish, his face going pale as he went over his words with some dread.
“I..I mean...Oh. That’s...that sounds a little creepy now that i’m...thinking...please ah...if you want to forget that I said it, I know that you’re not...interested so...ah…”
...He had made it kind of clear last time, and now that he was mentioning that time...well. “Still...I just want you to be warm, Xander...and I want you to be happy, even if it isn’t with me, okay?”
That...was kind of a confession. Ish. Hidden somewhere in the long winded...whatever.

“I- thought from last time I was making you uncomfortable- now you’re offering to put your arms around me.” He tipped his head confused. “Why do you think I’m not...” he stammered. He hesitated and then offered Nelson his gift. He pursed his lips and tipped his head. “I want you happy too Nelson, I just... thought I made you, mad or upset last time, and I wasn’t trying to, I was trying to say... s**t” he sighed “Hey... Nelson? I’m cold.” He opened his arms.

Nelson paused and swallowed, his throat feeling suddenly very dry. “...You..have never made you uncomfortable...I just...figured I was overstepping boundaries and I was afraid...afraid if I pushed...I would ruin our friendship and that’s the very last thing I would ever want…” He took the gift and opened it, his expression softening as he took in the bunny. “Oh! It’s so cute! Xander!”
He hugged it tightly and paused, face going pink again at the question. “...If you’re cold...p-put on my gift, silly…”
Nelson hesitated for only a second though and then moved into Xander’s arms, hugging him close and pressing his face into the crook of the male’s neck. “...I’m...really warm right now...I...I have to just say that...but...seriously I...I’ll...always hold you…”
Happily. Forever.

“As long as you’re comfortable with it, okay? How about you put it on me? I don’t want to let go? You might catch a really bad case of my stupids and run off, and then I’d have to tell people you eloped with a patchwork bunny!” He wrapped his arms around Nelson and savored the warmth and the closeness. It was so nice to be -wanted.

Nelson gave a little laugh, nuzzling just a little closer as he unwrapped the scarf and carefully wound it around Xander’s neck. “You don’t have stupids, Xander...you’ve never had stupids...and I wouldn't ever run away from you...I like you far too much for that.”
The scarf looked as good as he had hoped it would, and Nelson seemed pleased.
He was about to close his eyes again and just savor the fact that he was being held, but movement made him stiffen for a moment, though he relaxed when two adorable fluffy bunnies hopped a little closer to the two of them. “Oh! Xander, Xander look!”
He wouldn't ever elope with a patchwork bunny...but…
Nelson wouldn’t ever say no to petting a real one.

“BUNNIES!” The joy in Xander’s voice bordered on ridiculous. “Oh my GOD, they are so cute!” He said his voice dropping to a near whisper so he wouldn’t scare them. “Do you think they were someone’s pets? How do you tell if they were wild and just have a winter coat? Do they do that around here?” He whispered crouching and holding out a hand to see if they were friendly. Did bunnies get rabies? He hoped not…

Xander’s reaction made Nelson jump slightly but he laughed softly and nodded. “They are cute. I...I don’t know. They could have been. Obviously...they um. Were just jealous that I was given this handsome perfect bunny and they wanted to show off just how cute they were, r-right?”
He knelt beside Xander, holding his own hand out, letting out a breathy squeal of delight when they both hopped over, one to each of their hands and gave tiny sniffs, as though trying to search for food. After a moment, the one closest to Nelson hopped a little closer, headbutting his hand and nuzzling against it, shaking slightly and knocking some snow off of its tiny rabbit body. He bit his lip, trying to hold back a delighted noise and laughed softly.
“...I like when you’re so happy, Xander. You’re...r-really cute.”

“I think you’re right.” Grinned Xander. “You clearly have the best bunny, as far as stuffed bunnies go, it’s even got that little heart on it. But I …think they may be winning the real bunny award. He glanced at Nelson and blushed, cute… he thought he was cute! If he were Rudolf, he’d have flown too. “You’re way cuter, trust me,” Xander said with a nod. “Oooo, their fur is so cool to the touch! Poor things, I hope they are staying warm enough with all this snow.” He gently rubbed a finger over one long soft ear. “Man, so SOFT.” He said in the loud ‘whisper’ he did at times.

Nelson’s eyes flickered over to Xander and he felt himself blushing slightly, before turning his attention firmly back to the bunnies. Reaching out, he began to stroke the soft fur, giving a little shiver of delight. “They really are cool! And soft! But…”
Oh. Was he. Going to really. Say something that he might or might regret later?
Quietly, while he had half an ounce of nerve in him, and with Yu’s voice ringing in his head, he reached out to gently stroke Xander’s ponytail. “...your hair is softer though. And there’s more of it for me to p-play with...and if...if you would like to come to my house after this...I would very...very much like to watch a movie with you and play with your hair. I...I’ll order from that Dim Sum place, the one with the spicy dumplings? I...I know you liked that the last time…”
Biting his lip, Nelson hesitated. “...It could...it could be a um. I...a d-date if you...would like it to be…”
Oh god. There it was.

Xander blinked, blushing as he gave an unusually shy smile in return. Delighted never the less. “I… yeah. I’d like that,” he said rubbing the back of his neck. “But, I’mma warn you in advance. I am s**t at taking a compliment. Say stuff like that and I might just curl up like a bunny in the snow here.” he laughed. “But uh… yeah, I’d love a date. Lucky being asked out by such a handsome fellow.”
