December was here, which meant Christmas was looming just around the corner- 'less than two weeks away! buy now!' the ads were all saying. Of course, while the rest of Destiny City seemed to be out and about doing their not quite last minute holiday shopping, Safiya.... was grinding in gbf. After all, relationships were fleeting, doomed to end in failure, but Cagliostro Granblue Fantasy was eternal (though not an Eternal- there was an important distinction to make here). This year, she'd managed to pull Summer Cags during the summer free draws, and had managed to wheedle her roommates into gifting her Cags’ paid skins that she lacked, thus completing her collection of the cutest alchemist in the skies (for now). Personally, she was still waiting on Belial to become playable, what with him being a dlc character in GBVS, but this was good enough for now- she liked Cags well enough- after all, she too, would love to feed her enemies to a giant snake made of alchemy.

Although she wasn’t out shopping for xmas gifts, Safiya was admittedly still out in town, though it wasn’t really for any particularly important reason. Rather, she had been doing her usual loitering around town after classes let out, potentially intending doing one of her usual ice cream runs (despite it being winter now), when she had decided to drop by the local coffee shop, to pick up a coffee and snack… and leech off their wifi, too. After all, why not? It was strike time with her crew, and while they (including Saf) weren’t ones to super apply themselves to the grind, an extra drops event was as good an excuse as any to poke at raids, and her grid had improved slightly with all the free stuff cygames kept tossing at them…

Sitting outside at one of the outdoor dining tables, Safi took her time drinking her coffee, in order to take advantage of the free internet as long as she could. She was quickly losing mvp to the whales, a common event occurring every day practically, but if it wasn’t for all this lag --

(Well, it was always easy enough to blame everything else but her lack of skill, anyway.)

He hated winter. Shocking, he knew, that a hairless, homeless goblin would detest the snowiest, most frigid season, when climbing into running car engines was the most reliable way to stay warm and out of sight. And whatever the humans 'festivities' consisted of during this time always seemed to make them even more high-strung and snappish. Signs read things like 'peace' and 'joy,' but attitudes sure ******** didn't. Food was scarce, and every creature and their mother was after whatever scraps were available. Winter was the worst. Hands down. No contest. Gremlin hated winter.

But it was different this year. This year he didn't have to spend his nights hunkered down on the inside ledge of some two-legger's chimney, desperate for heat and willing to inhale lungful after lungful of billowing smoke if that was what it took to stay alive, while ash just delicately wafted up to coat his skin what seemed like permanently.

Buh. Just thinking about it gave him heartburn.

He shouldn't have to think about it, because he didn't have to deal with it. This year, he could loiter in chaos Mauvian headquarters and filch things out of the Negaspace cafeteria (filch was perhaps a gratuitous word: the lieutenants manning the food stations didn't seem particularly stingy, but anyone could eat his entire a** if they thought he was just going to ask nicely for anything from a grimy human).

So why wasn't he loitering in the heated and comfortable common room of HQ? Why was he sitting on the rooftop ledge of a coffee shop, butt facing toward one of the vents expelling warm air from the building while his pinched gaze surveyed passerby along the sidewalk below? Well, no one had said it outright, but Gremlin had the impression that 'comfort' in the Negaverse wasn't exactly a free entitlement. Being essentially a cat meant that he didn't have rent money, but being a Mauvian allowed him to provide a handful of essential services unique to his kind.

No one had said as much, but Gremlin was pretty sure if he didn't provide those services, he didn't get room and board.

He wanted room and board.

And the emanating sensation of untapped senshi power from somewhere nearby kept him in place. His ears were pinned back, icy eyes narrowed to slits, and paws tucked close to his chest as he grimaced and glowered down at the scattering of two-leggers below. What truly ugly creatures. His tail flicked. That girl had been sitting at that table playing with her phone for a while now, though, while everyone else moved around her...

He'd wanted to be sure before he approached, and given how long she'd been here, and how long he'd felt that whisper of something magic nearby, it seemed reasonable that they might be connected.

Gremlin rose from his perch, stretching his paws out in front of himself before hopping from the ledge and down to the little brick fence around the shop, and then from there to the table the girl was seated at. He let out a deep, raspy meow as he landed before her, staring at the girl through unblinking blue eyes.

Safiya liked cats, but she wasn't super crazy about them- she could appreciate them from a distance, but she didn't see herself, say, living in a cabin in the woods with twenty cats. Suffice to say, her appreciation for cats didn't include hairless ones, though, and Safiya found herself leaning back and away from the sudden intruder, somewhat disturbed, but otherwise just a little irked at being interrupted from her grinding. Well, somewhat disturbed at first, but then full on unnerved by the cat just... sitting there. Staring at her.

She didn't get shaken up that easily, but there was something about the way this cat that bothered her.

"... May I help you?" Safiya finally spoke up, after gaining her bearings; being that cats couldn't speak 'human', she expected no answer, but the words came out regardless. Where had the cat come from, anyway? She looked around, waiting impatiently for someone to claim their alien pet. Surely, this was someone's trained cat, and this was some really dumb set up for someone's stupid TikTok video or something, after all.

Humans were such base creatures. Easily startled, easily disturbed, easily confused. Their minds were like little bricks: difficult to penetrate, but with such brittle edges once cracked. This one stared at him for what felt like a long time, leaning away and casting uncomfortable, irked glares at him. When it did speak, it certainly didn't sound appreciative to be in his presence. It was his least favorite type of human: the ones who didn't feel blessed by what he could bestow upon them.

He just had to remember how much his liked those pillows in headquarters.

Gremlin's tail lashed, and he rolled his eyes, casting quick glances first one way, then the other to ensure that no one else was within hearing range. There were scattered two-leggers about, but none looked like they could be bothered to care that a girl was talking to a cat.

"Not with that attitude," he snapped back, stalking a pace toward her and extending a paw to place on the screen of her phone to push it down and away from her. His claws came out, the tips of long talons clinking lightly against the smooth glass screen. "If you're going to be a witch about it, I will keep my gifts to myself." His tail flicked, and he continued to study her. Yeah, he was definitely sure that subtle, flickering aura was coming from this one.

But honestly, all filthy humans looked the same. No one could tell just by looking at her that she was anything special. "Tsk. And with such a disrespectful tone, it's no wonder another cat didn't approach you first..."

Remarque didn't like cats on good days. He didn't like hairless cats that looked like wrinkly rodents on the best of days, but he wasn't going to pass up an opportunity when one presented itself.

There were very few reasons why Mauvians talked to humans, and very few reasons why humans looked confused when a Mauvian was talking to them.

He was more conspicuous than either of them; a talking cat was easily overlooked when it chose to hold its tongue. Remarque had stepped out of the mirror just in time to see the conversation, and he wasn't one to take much time to make up his mind.

"Awfully bold," he said to the Mauvian as he approached. "Do you often approach people in public like this? I'm surprised I haven't seen you on the internet."

He looked to the young woman being addressed and, like he wasn't dressed in completely abnormal attire, asked, "Don't let him chase you away with that foul mouth."

He didn't know this Mauvian, but he'd never met one that seemed so testy.

"Cat. You look cold. Why don't you let me take care of this one so you can get back to somewhere warm? It'll go faster with the two of us, and I doubt I want to be out in this weather any more than you. It won't do either of us any good if you chase her away before she has the chance to know what we're offering."

The cat's words struck a nerve with Safiya, reminding her of certain unpleasant family members that were no longer in her life, and if it wasn't for the whole absurdity of the ongoing situation, she might have snapped back with a few choice words of her own, that may or may not have been in another language and not something repeatable in polite company. As it was, though, the appearance of a young man dressed like he stepped out of a Spirit Halloween store (not that Safiya could be any sensible judge of fashion herself) put a stop to anything she may have thought of doing, and Remarque had her full attention for the moment.

The hairless cat was lucky; if it weren't for this newcomer, she may have been moments away from lunging across the table at the talking feline that deigned to insult her.

"Yes, why don't you do what he says?" Safiya said to Gremlin, as she reached out to retrieve her phone from where the cat had knocked it away from her, "I don't know what these 'gifts' are, but I think I'd prefer to hear about it from someone who doesn't call me a 'witch' upon our first meeting, without knowing anything about me."

Gremlin felt it before he saw it, and he couldn't even begin to suppress an answering eyeroll at the approaching Mirror senshi's greeting. A snarl rumbled out of him, and his ears pinned flat as he turned to glower at the man. "No bolder than you," he shot back. "No one's gonna blink at a girl toting her cat around, but here comes sissy mirror rat, drawing attention everywhere he goes with his flashy, flamboyant outfits. Lucky a youma doesn't come stalking after you; that'd really be something to chase the girl off."

Probably didn't matter anything he said at this point. Pretty much as soon as Mirror brat stalked over, Gremlin could basically tell that selfish, thieving humans were going to interrupt anything he was trying to accomplish.

"We are not offering anything," he asserted, despite being all too aware that witch-girl would obviously side with wraith-gonna-be because why would their kind do anything but tag-team something different than them? The girl had already managed to look disgusted at his presence. "Your ilk has nothing but enemies. Can't be friends with the White Moon, can't be trusted by the Negaverse, but you're gonna subject a girl to that, then bounce. No guidance, no protection. Lots of frilly words from your kind."

He hopped from the table, casting a backward snarl at witchling. "I know you're a clueless brat casting dirty looks at an ugly cat who could've shown you another world. Feel like I'll call you whatever I want." What was he supposed to do, then? Stay and beg for a venomous girl? Uh, no. "Don't come crying to me when it's not everything you want."

"Take her. Better hope no one hears about you thieving, Mirror rat," he snapped as he pounced from the ground and up to the brick fence around the edge of the coffee shop's outdoor seating. "Hope you're tiny, pitiful court has all the resources it needs to keep a mouthy girl from getting ganked."

And because he wasn't going to offer anything else he knew to someone so disgustingly ungrateful, he left, slinking down the edge of the brick until he could pounce from it and up onto the taller fencing, and then the awning, next to the building.

The cat threw around a lot of words that Safiya didn't quite catch nor understand, before he finally left her alone with Spirit Halloween, as she was dubbing him, leaving her with probably more questions than she cared to ask, but mostly just satisfaction at finally being rid of him for now. Perhaps, had he not called her things like 'brat' and 'witch', she may have heard him out, despite looking like a overgrown rat, and learnt more about this other world he spoke of. Instead of offering the proverbial olive branch, he only managed to burn bridges and drive her away, in less than fifteen minutes.

Still...

"Alright, there has to be a specific reason for all of this," Safiya began, after some thought. "First I get a talking rat calling me names, and now..."

"You know what he was talking about?" she inquired, glancing over at Remarque, aka, Spirit Halloween.

Remarque clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth as he watched the Mauvian dart away. He shook his head as the wrinkly creature disappeared and turned his gaze back to the girl he’d been speaking to.

“I do, yes,” he confirmed. “Sorry about that, they’re usually quite a bit nicer. Bit of a mouth on that one, though. No wonder he’s running around on his own. Not sure who he’s calling a rat, though. I don’t think I’d be hurling around insults like that if I were him.”

He shrugged; the callousness of a sensitive Mauvian was the least of his concerns. He had enough rapport that he was certain he could spin this story in a much better light than the cat.

“I’ll cut to the chase, I don’t think you need me to sugarcoat anything for you. There’s a war going on here and not everyone’s been invited to it but everyone’s involved all the same. He’s part of an organization responsible for a lot of weird things happening in Destiny City. I’m sure you’ve heard about disappearances, strange illnesses that leave people unconscious or dead with no cure? Or ‘strange animal’ sightings. Are you familiar with any of those?”
