He hadn’t had to do much Christmas shopping over the last few years. Not since he was dating Ilya. There simply hadn’t been...anyone to buy things for...but now...now he had three people. Six if you included the animals...and eight if you counted Ilya’s siblings but...he didn’t...not really. Perhaps he would pick up something small for Eli, just because he could...oh! And Soleiyu. He couldn’t forget Soliyu...so...eight then.
That was a lot of people and Sterling was kind of at a loss for what to get.
Yu was the easiest, and the stove had already been ordered, to be installed on the eighteenth...there wasn’t any way to hide it but...still. Sterling hoped that he would be excited. For Priam...he had no idea what to get. But...a bookshelf seemed a good place to start. And perhaps a few books to start filling it with...it couldn’t replace what he had lost but...it could be something. He could renovate the downstairs closet, make it a little book room...a tiny, mini library...oh, that might be kind of fun, actually.
He entered the bookstore on the corner and breathed deeply. The books would come first. He needed several of them...the shelves couldn’t look bare, after all.
He would start in the fairy tale section first. Priam had mentioned a few books that he had lost, and since he had the names written down...replacing them would be easy.
He hoped.

Someone rounded a corner from the same section, with a few books tucked under their arm, A man of nearly your own height, but with hair of a white-blond, almost a cream. His books went tumbling and he made a startled sound. “AH! Damn! My books!” He was crouching to scoop them up again, checking the covers for damage. Fairytales of course he’d just come from that section. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going, are you alright?” He glanced up at you with warm brown eyes, a few shades darker than your own, just hinting towards black. He stood with his arms back in the crook of his arm. “I’m so sorry, let me make it up to you!”

Sterling paused, and made a squeak of surprise, bending to help the male pick up the books. “I’m so sorry! It wasn’t your fault, are you okay? I was completely lost in my own thoughts…” He gave a light laugh and shook his head, smiling sheepishly at the male. “Make it up to me? I mean…”
His eyes moved over the pile of books in his arms and he suddenly grinned. “...Could you help me find some books maybe? Obviously, you’re a fan of the fairy tale section, I see. I want to get some Christmas gifts for my boyfriend.” One of them, at least.
“He’s a big fan of fairy tales so...I was thinking of getting him a few...or...or a dozen. I’m not really sure. Especially with the sale going on? You can’t really beat buying two and getting one...I...could be in quite a lot of trouble from that deal…”
HIs eyes moved back to the selection of books and he grinned. “I’m Sterling. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Roger! A true pleasure to meet someone so considerate! And someone who is either a Player or a Poly. Though you seem much to nice to be a player.” He winked with a grin, wide and charming like he’d have been well suited to model with a bit of polish. “Do you have a list? That will give me fair idea where to start you. This can be my chance to get on Santa’s nice list.” “Bonus for you too, they have some charity doing gift wrapping at the door, if you’re the sort to put up a tree you can tuck them under it and it’ll look quite fancy!”

He paused at the questioning and hesitated, frowning slightly at the very idea of being called a player...he wasn’t...why would…
“That’s ah. A strange question to ask a perfect stranger, don’t you think?” Sterling said lightly, giving a slightly confused, slightly nervous laugh. “I have a few that I know he’ll want, but no. I’m not a player, thank you, and I’m not quite certain why that idea came into your head…”
But...gift wrapping...he could get them all wrapped and put them on the bookshelf...oh, now that would be fun. THere simply wouldn’t be room under the tree for all of the books he wanted to get Praim.
“The wrapping, I think I'll look into that. What is the charity they want? Book donations?” It was a bookstore, after all. Though, if it was money they wanted, he could manage that too. Anything to get him out of wrapping the gifts himself.

“Is it? I didn’t really think so after you said Boyfriends plural, I’m sorry… most people I’ve met only ever have one significant other. I’m very bad at teasing I’m afraid.” He ducked his head slightly as though he were embarrassed. “Just putting my foot in it as per normal. Please forgive me, I tend to put my foot into things far more when the person I’m talking to is pretty. He shook his head “I think they are taking pay what you will for the paper, in order to raise funds for, oh I forget who’s doing it today, someone scouts, or perhaps one of the shelters? The other day they had someone caroling with profound enthusiasm and very little pitch. I think by the end of the day they were paying the poor soul to stop as much as they were giving the exuberant soul funds for the charity of their choice.” "Oh dear, I hope that's not creepy too, the holidays lead me here more often than anything. The sales, the festivities, the peppermint hot chocolate..."

Sterling paused, frowning slightly. Had he said boyfriends? He thought he only had mentioned one...that...well. He was stressed, perhaps that was why he wasn’t thinking clearly. Not that it was still any business of this stranger but…
“Well. If I said that, that was my mistake. Yes, I do have two boyfriends, and we have each other. There’s not...ah. ‘Playing’ going on, I can assure you. I wouldn’t ever hurt them.” A smile came to his face then as his mind strayed back to Priam and Yu and he sighed. “So. I guess, poly then. Sure but...I’m not really...a fan of labels, I suppose.”
At least when it came to identity. He didn’t know how to classify himself and therefore simply...didn’t. He had tried to find the right labels that fit what he...what he felt, but they had all simply felt wrong. He was simply Sterling. Boyfriend of Yu and Priam. ANd that was...honestly, all that he needed to be.
“You are a bit creepy, but...maybe you’re just lonely. And...do they have peppermint hot chocolate at the cafe here?” He suddenly wanted some. Terribly so.

“That’s fair, I’m not a fan of them myself. People try and put names and definitions on everyone and everything.” He sighed and shook his head. “I’ll blame the fact I was country raised and most of my schooling was done at home. I’ll try and be less creepy and overbearing in the future though, I can apologize with one of their fabulous hot chocolates and book recommendations?” He offered an almost shy smile, tucking hands in his pockets and rocking back onto his heels for a moment. “Does he like the sweet ones or the old ones? Maybe I can tell from the ones you know he has?”

Sterling hesitated and gave a little laugh, softening slightly. “Well, It’s all right. But. Hot chocolate does sound good. I’ll get some with you. And as for what he likes...both. He had a lot of them, but there was a fire recently and he lost most of his books...so. I wanted to replace what I could. He loves happy endings.”
Sterling did too, and obviously...they were finally headed towards one. There had been enough bad luck so far this year...it had been rather insane.
“And anything that looks…magical, if that makes sense? Like, the books in the opening of Disney movies...big...fancy...fairytales.” He looked pleased and then thoughtful. “And perhaps some about dogs? He really enjoys dogs a lot. Ah. I want to just buy him the whole store!” It wouldn’t fit in the closet...but that didn’t make him want to do it any less.

“Oh I think I can get you covered, there are some very interpreting takes as well. Some even pay tribute to the darker endings which is historically beautiful if dark.” He started skimming the shelves and pulling books out, setting them onto a space of shelf in front of an out facing display of a title. He even went far enough to pick out what seemed to be special edition covers and bindings that seemed somehow more magical themselves. “There is this used book store you should try too, they say it has miles of books, you might find some older copies. I know they keep some with the higher price tags behind the counter. Lithographs and such for prints. Depends how much you’re looking to spend and how much room you have?” “Oh! This one is especially good, if he hasn’t read it he should. You almost think the villain gets away, but they find them in the end and he gets everything he deserves. The hero’s family gets the justice they deserved, it pulls my heart strings every time. Oh! And this one is just sort of classic romance but with fairies!” “Let me know if I’m going overboard! I’m afraid this is one of my favorite genre.”

A used bookstore? Oh, yes that sounded utterly perfect. What couldn’t he find in there? And why hadn’t he visited before now! “Used bookstores are absolute treasures and there simply aren’t enough of them in the world for my taste.” Sterling was pulling the books from the shelves as Roger pointed them out and looked utterly pleased.
“To be honest...I’m not so worried about the cost right now, and it’s mine too. Fairy Tales...I like when people get what they deserve. I love when people end up happy...it…” He gave a happy sigh. “You’re not going overboard at all.”
This was a perfectly natural reaction when around things you cared about and were passionate for. And there was no way Sterling was going to stop such a reaction. “They...don’t have baskets here...do they? I think...my arms being the size they are will be the only real issue here.”

“Oh! It’s something of my fault to give you such a pile, I’ll help you carry them to the counter if you’d like, once it’s in bags then you’ll have hands for the hot chocolate and I can tell you how to get to the used book store? You’d never know it to see it from the outside. It looks a bit like you’d be more likely to find a underground gambling den to be honest, but it really is a bookstore. They call it ‘the mine’ and it’s a thi of wonder. I was so happy to stumble on it!” “I’ve turned up a few signed books there that were an utter delight, couldn’t afford some of them mind you but I didn’t think I would ever have even seen a signed Tolkien book without that place.”

The thought of finding such a treasure was a rather breathtaking one and Sterling nodded, then shook his head. “It’s all right...arms full of books is a great way to...to have your arms, so it doesn’t really matter...but that store sounds amazing. I can’t wait to give it a try. I wonder what I’ll find…”
Not that signed books meant too much to him but...still. It would be kind of neat. A collectable thing. A conversation piece.
“If you wanted to help me to the counter, that would be amazing, Roger, thank you. And...I’m sorry that I called you a creep. I was quick to judge and I apologize for it.”
It was only fair. After all...it had been his slip, right? Regardless, Roger was being perfectly kind now, and first impressions could be wrong.

“Oh…no worries at all, trust me, I know I can be sort of…” He shrugged to encompass whatever word eluded him. “Let’s say excessively exuberant, which is not the best way to make first impressions. I’m glad you let me help so I could make a vague attempt to redeem myself. I’d hate to have to banish myself from this establishment out of embarrassment for how poorly I behaved. Not that I couldn’t find another bookstore, I love the small ones like this. But I’m not sure anyone could outdo what they do with their hot chocolate.” He was rambling, a bit like he was shy or nervous. “But…you’re right about arm fulls of books, the only thing perhaps better is hands full of such delights. Nothing like a whole story just…. spilling out for you. A whole world that you can reach out and touch.”

Sterling gave a soft smile and shook his head. “You’re fine, Roger. Don’t talk badly about yourself...now, please...if you could grab the last three books that you mentioned...I think that’ll be enough for now...I’m really craving that hot chocolate since you keep bringing it up!”
His voice was teasing and he stuck his tongue out at the male, laughing softly. “...It was nice meeting you. It’s...dull to go shopping alone, and you have wonderful suggestions for books!” Sterling could continue shopping after the hot chocolate, it would be nice, and he could get even more books for the new library. Their new library. Miniature library?
It didn’t really matter, so long as Priam was happy with it...and he hoped very much that he would be.
