Leaving the sweet parts of Thanksgiving up to Priam and Sterling had been hard. In a good way sort of hard, but hard because if he could have proved to them he was somehow indispensable he would have.

But he was with them, and they with him... and by god he was going to do a proper Turkey even if it killed him. So- hours later, with so many curses at various things like trying to make ‘professional’ mashed potatoes, risking his self perceived ‘sweet’ curse with cranberry sauce and orange zest, yams and Parker house rolls all being balanced and cooked around the ever present trouble of ‘the Turkey’ which was what had him opening and closing and basting and dripping and generally eyeing till at last it came up a reasonable temperature and was ready to carve.

Best of all, he’d used their crock pot to make a mulled wine.

The table was set - the foil set to keep dishes warm. All there was left was to call people to the table.

Sterling had been terribly excited for the dinner for weeks, though he wouldn’t have said so outright. He had baked three pies the night before so that Yu could have his run of the kitchen, and and bought not only a tablecloth, fancy cloth napkins but candlesticks and two candles that were almost too pretty to light. He lit them anyway and set the table with as much care as though it were for a royal family.

All day he had been sniffing the air and sighing happily, pressing kisses to both Priam and Yu whenever he got the chance to. It was going to be perfect, how could it not be? He was happy, healthy and with his two most favorite people in the known universe. Quietly, he slipped over to Yu and slid his arms around the male’s waist, nibbling his ear. “I have been so hungry all day...it smells wonderful. Why don’t you have yourself a seat and I’ll help Priam in? Not that he needs much help anymore, but still. I love you.”

His words were soft, and he hoped that Yu could hear the emotions he held in them.

“We have so much to be thankful for this year…”

He smiled brightly and headed into the living room, holding out his hands to Priam. “Dinner is ready, my bookworm. I hope you’re hungry, you should be, for, unlike me...you haven’t been taking tastes of things all day long…”

Priam was generally not a good mix in the kitchen, not while it was busy and bustling and he had a tendency of either bumping things with his cast or was still sensitive to being jostled. He was healing well enough, but he wasn't going to risk anything to worsen the progress he'd made.

So, he'd spent most of his time today in the living room, out of the way and trying to distract the dogs from laying at Yu's feet.

He'd helped set the table, but that was his big accomplishment; since then he'd just been around for conversation and devouring the last book he'd gotten. His nose had been buried in it all day, but as soon as Sterling approached, he slid the bookmark in and laid it out on the couch. He reached out his good arm, careful always not to put too much weight or pressure on any part of his body.

"I am famished. Odie and Penny keep whining and griping all day, so I can only speculate how much testing and snacking they've managed to eke out of you two. I haven't had a proper Thanksgiving in years, I'm very excited. Next year I'll help with sides or something. My turkeys have never smelled as good as Yu's does."

“I have never cooked a turkey! I have only done chickens!” He admitted anxiously.

“I should have done a Ham, I’ve helped done ham…” He might have been a little anxious because it was such a big… family holiday, second only to Christmas.

He tried to breathe as he felt hands slide around his waist, almost purring at the sensation of teeth at his ear. “I just gotta get the wine strained and I’ll sit, promise.” He offered as Sterling went to assist Priam, just strain it into a pitcher…
He had to laugh softly that the dogs had been griping, but he’d made them the giblets chopped fine after the Gravy had been made, and added to their own dinners.

“If we redo the kitchen, we should scrip and go all fancy, get a double oven. You have no idea how useful that can be.” He laughed a little embarrassed at his own admission of desire for a specific improvement. It was just that he could have had so much more going in and out at the same times if….

well, it was a silly thought for a house probably.

“I made treats for the critters too, Oreo got some of the white meat, and the dogs got giblets and a little tiny bit of gravy.”

“I still can’t get over that, Yu. You’ve never cooked a turkey, but it literally smells like a Hallmark movie in here. A warm, perfect smell of a turkey and the best Thanksgiving food ever.” He was careful as he helped Priam up, getting him settled in his chair and taking a moment to press a kiss to the top of his hair.

“I’m glad that the animals got to be a little spoiled, they do deserve it, they’re wonderful.” Everyone in the house was wonderful, and Sterling hesitated. “...I do really like ham though. Maybe we could have it soon, that sounds fantastic.” And the idea of a double oven...he could look into that. If it would make Yu happy...and a kitchen renovation, the kitchen was fine...but it could always be better.

Besides. It was the first thing that Yu had asked for, how could he not provide it?

Perhaps...for Christmas. He could price some things out at least.

He didn’t comment on the idea, mulling over everything in his mind. “Hurry, love! Or I’ll go absolutely feral on the food and there won’t be any more!”

Priam laughed softly, trying to imagine Sterling feral. He could craft any number of images into his head, but that one just seemed taboo. "You can do a ham for Christmas, Yu." He paused, but considered the Standing Rib Roast Yu had mentioned during an earlier conversation--back when they were still new to each other. Back when they had been talking about Christmas plans, and what Yu was going to do for Sterling.

Priam realized rather suddenly that he was in the picture in a very different way that before, and he found his face warming up a bit. It was an instinctive response, like sometimes he forgot how lucky he was, that this wasn't just some dream. It was so strange to recall a memory when things were so different, and now here he was, living with them--albeit temporarily--involved with them...

"Or, a pre-Christmas ham. They'll probably be on sale this week."

He was smiling, and even felt a little weightless at the idea of having such a perfect duo to spend Christmas with. "Thank you for cooking, by the way. --And thank you for helping me, Sterling," he said, relaxing into the chair and leaning against the back to take some pressure off of his protesting spine. "Actually, thank you both for everything. I really don't know where I'd be right now without you two."

“If I’d thought about it and the timing, maybe I could have figured out the Turkey and the ham both.” He fretted slightly.

Hands tangled in his hair the way they often did when he thought about ‘menus’
“Maybe we could do one half between now and Christmas... I could probably do some things better if I do them again...

Gah! I need the carving knife!” He realized and hurried back to the kitchen so that he wouldn’t be trying to serve giant bird by telling people to grab a handful.

He returned shortly looking flustered, ears red.
“I’m happy to cook I promise, I just haven’t done this before. We’re both glad to have you too... ah, here let me serve you each some Turkey and we can go from there?” He fluttered.

“Yu! Yu don’t worry, we have more than enough food for the three of us, and Priam’s right, a pre Christmas ham sounds wonderful to me. I can go shopping tomorrow and see if the grocery store is having any Black Friday deals on hams. That’s a pretty good idea.”

Sterling smiled at Priam and reached over, squeezing his hand gently. “You don’t have to worry about that, since neither of us is going anywhere. I’m sad to say that you’re stuck with us. I hope that’s not too big of an imposition…” He grinned and gave a little wink, turning back to gaze into the kitchen, watching Yu with such a fond expression.

“You know, love...this dinner is perfect because we’re all here together, not because of what we’re eating or how it’s prepared...that...that’s the whole point of Thanksgiving...and I’m so very...thankful that fate brought us together and that I’m sitting here with the loves of my life. The situations might not have always been good...but the outcome was, that’s for sure…” He wanted Yu to relax...this wasn’t some kind of a test, there wasn’t any...thanksgiving chef award to be given out...though of course he would be more than worthy of it.

Priam smiled reassuringly at Yu's fretting, hoping that the message would convey without him verbally fussing over the younger man too much. It was endearing, how important this was to Yu--how much it meant to him, that he was trying so hard to make sure it was perfect for them.

Yu could have cooked the absolute worst meal in the world, and Priam wasn't sure that it still wouldn't have been his favorite.

Thankfully, the meal looked good and smelled good--and Yu was a professional, who was just a little too hard on himself.

"An imposition? Oh, please," Priam said, smiling at Sterling. "I'm happy to be here. I've never fallen harder for anyone in my life."

He smile was pressed, like he was determined to only focus on the good of this. It wasn't that falling didn't traumatize him; he often woke up with a start, and dreams about falling had a completely new effect on him. What of it that had left him shaken and disturbed he did his best to hide, and there was a part of him that was grateful he needed such recovery that he didn't have to leave the house often.

...But still, it meant he was here, with them. Maybe things would have happened the same way even if he hadn't been thrown off the roof, but Priam needed it to have a reason, a purpose, and so he focused on this. On them.

"Yu," he added to Sterling's words, "I have the upmost confidence in you. You've been working so hard, and you have such talent in the kitchen. Come sit down and relax."

And taste the turkey; Priam had no doubt that as soon as someone took a bite, Yu could take a breath and be assured that he'd done a good job--and hopefully actually get to sit down and enjoy the meal with them.

Yu looked sheepish… ducking his head slightly for lack of being able to do any of his normal fidgets with his hands full of sizable cutlery.

“Sorry…” He said awkwardly. “It’s just, an important holiday, for like… everything, as more family than what it's for but it’s.” He stopped stumbling over the words and focused on carving juicy strips of turkey away from the bones, setting aside the wings and legs onto the corners of the serving platter so he could lay out slices of the breast in the middle, then whatever dark meat he could neatly draw free.

“It… just feels like I should… be able to make it BE one of those Hallmark movies.” He managed by way of trying to give a possible explanation for his nerves.

“I’ll be fine in a moment, it’s not like I can keep making up things to take care of.” He gave a shy and nervous sort of grin, the blush creeping from his ears to his cheeks and neck.

Carving the bird also went, faster than he would have liked, it cut beautifully and he only scotched the knife against a bone once, and then it was so sharp he sliced free a section of that, which just made him more embarrassed as he quickly removed the ‘afflicted’ section of bird.

“RIGHT.” He said at last. “Who wants white meat, dark meat, or uh…both?” He offered.

“Or uh…should I let people serve themselves, is that … better? Someone else picks first okay?” He laughed ducking his head.

Sterling pursed his lips and shook his head at Priam’s attempt at a joke, not enjoying the implication of just how they had gotten together but...finding it a little funny all the same. “Well, Priam...we’re going to make sure that you don’t fall for anyone else, okay?” They would protect him from anything higher than his bed. As far as Sterling was concerned, Priam didn’t need to climb on anything higher than that for at least a month or two.

His eyes found Yu as the male began to carve the turkey and they watched him with a warm tenderness. “Dark meat for me, please. We’re serious though, Yu...we don’t need you running yourself ragged to impress us...I would have been honestly happy with a turkey sandwich, so long as I got to spend the day with you.” He reached a hand over, taking Yu’s and squeezing it gently. “...Now, let’s eat! You have worked really hard on this...and I’m more than ready to try it.”

Sterling took a sip of his drink and sighed. “...I’m most thankful for you two...if. Ah. You do that. Say what you’re most thankful for, formally, I mean.. I’m most thankful for my family. The loves of my life.”

"White meat, please," Priam said, not wanting to give Yu any extra difficulty when it came to carving the turkey, or putting pressure on him to surprise him. "Sharing what you're thankful for is a tradition in my family as well. When we have dinner together. But," he shrugged. "I don't remember the last time all of us were together. Usually Jarvis tries to come over around this point in time, but he's busy with work. I'm thankful for him. For you two being so welcoming to him, too. He asks about you often and he sends you his best wishes. I'm thankful for my horses, whose names I won't mention because we don't need them trying to get up the table. I miss my last dog, and I love him dearly, but they helped heal the hole in my heart. I'm thankful to be here, with you two, I'm thankful that you're sharing your home with me, and your love with me. I'm thankful that I'm not the same person I was a few months ago."

He was quiet for a moment, and then smiled. "...I think I'm better than I've been in a long time. And I know it's thanks to you two. I needed a change. And, whether it looks like it or not, Yu, this might as well be a Hallmark movie. It is, to me. 'And they lived happily ever after' seems like it would it in pretty well."

He served up according to taste, taking a small variety for himself, and letting some of the tension slide out of his shoulders carefully.

Happily ever after, it felt like it brought him closer to ‘home’ again.
“Thanks…both of you.” He said with a soft smile.
“I’ll try and be way less stressed for Christmas, I promise.” He offered.
He pulled out his seat and sat down with a soft sigh realizing how much the day and everything else had gotten to him.

He had a guilty twinge that as much as he wasn’t sure he LIKED Ilya right now, he wondered if he should have made him a plate as well. Maybe after this…

“Well… It’s not a turkey sandwich, but at least I have two of the cutest hams as company.” He paused, hoping that the joke would go over well.
