Sometimes sleepovers were to remove Xander from his Family house, which was ultimately better for both Xander AND Jace when their mother was in anything like ‘a a mood’. Today had been one of those days, and Q had helped talk your parents into letting him stay over again. It hadn’t taken much - they had a lot of sympathy for the situation, but they also understood both sides of it and how Driven Mrs. Jianmin could be. For all that the reasons had been avoidance, it was with a wide smile that Xander stood on your doorstep, a small bag slung over his shoulder and his pillow tucked under his arm. “HEY! Thanks again for having my back! I’d be lying if I didn’t say this was my favorite escape!” He shrugged a little sheepish. “I can uh… treat you to like… take out or something super awesome?” He grinned.

Nelson smiled softly, nodding and opening his arms to Xander. “Don’t worry about it. You’re always welcome here.” He was glad that Xander had come over. Glad that this was his choice of a safe place to stay. He always, always welcomed his best friend staying over, and it made him feel...needed.
“Make yourself at home, as always. You’re welcome here anytime.”
Perhaps sooner rather than later...he’d be living here. It would be nice if such were the case. He wouldn't have to fear being sent away. Wouldn’t have to keep fearing his adoptive mother the way that he did now. It would be a welcome relief to know that Xander was safe.
“I’m glad that it’s your favorite...that makes me feel really happy, I hope that you know.”

Xander went into the hug like wrapping up in a blanket. It was always good to have the safety that was Nelson, how he felt around him was this warm and soft sensation. It was one of those… ‘this is sort of confusing and I’ll sort it out later’ feelings he got with a handful of people. Figuring out ultimately how he felt about Nelson just… always came later. “I’d stay here more often, I promise… I just, I worry about Jace you know? I can’t leave him behind. It’s crazy. But, enough about me! How are YOU? How are classes going? You guys always blow my socks off with your medical studies, that's just…so cool you know?” He rambled off on something safer than his own thoughts. ‘ “What do you want to do tonight? We could play a game or something! Truth or Dare, Spin the bottle… who knows!”

Truth...truth or dare? Spin the bottle…? Nelson was glad that he was hugging Xander and that the male couldn’t see his face, as he felt it heating up.
“Oh! Um...You know that I want Jace to move here too, ah, Q would like it, I’m sure um…” Nelson drew away and took Xander’s hand, leading him deeper into the apartment, stopping at his own room so that the male could put his stuff down. He went and sat on the edge of his bed, giving a little, nervous laugh.
“Aren’t those games for...I don’t know...bigger groups of people? I mean...ah...if it’s sp-spin the bottle, there’s no real um...I mean.” He shrugged, looking away and grabbing a strand of hair, beginning to twist it nervously. “...And truth or dare, it’ll just be me and you so...ah...there...um…”
Oh goodness. This wasn’t anything that he had expected to have to deal with, but then he brightened. “...What about Mario Kart?”

“Mario cart works!”he grinned “the others are party games too so... I mean truth or dare still works, and we could do spin the bottle and include like... my bunny or a chair or something. But yeah! Mario cart! You want first dibs on who to play?” He patted Nelson’s shoulder companionably We can play for stakes if you want! You know you missed my spice challenges!”

“I’ll play baby Peach like I always do. You know that she’s my favorite.” He gave a soft laugh, relishing the feeling of Xander’s hand on his shoulder. “...Though, Xander, I really don’t think that the idea of ah...k-kissing a bunny or a chair is...all that...um. I mean. It wouldn’t be...it would be strange, don’t you think? And what if the chair had to kiss you? Terrifying and a waste of a um...a good first kiss, don’t you think?”
Nelson felt terribly flustered and averted his gaze, moving to set up the old Wii. He preferred the older game, though he had bought it for the Switch as well...the controllers on the switch were just...a little too difficult.
Too small.
“Who do you want to play...if you want to be baby Peach, just let me know and um...we can play rock paper scissors or something...ah...what kind of stakes do you want to play for? I’m game. I missed everything about you…”

“Fair, I’m not sure first kisses count unless it’s with people and then you still sort of have to exclude family because that’s a thing. But also who knows, chair kisses might be splintery and bunny might be all cottony. Mario Cart is is! Dibs on the boo!” He rubbed his hands together, prepare to get your butt whupped!” He looked thoughtful then considering stakes. “I dunno, sounded like a fun idea but I didn’t make it that far.” He admitted. “Best two of three, looser does.... something?” He waved his hands vaguely.

It was a dangerous conversation. Speaking to Xander about kisses. Nelson had known for a while now that he would do anything for Xander. That he would help him and always be there to pick him up if he fell but...he wasn’t sure where Xander stood with things.
And to tell the truth, he was far too afraid to ask.
Xander had been his first real friend, apart from his sister, though that couldn’t count since they were related. Everyone had always teased him for his stutter and his rather crippling shyness, and it had been hard to open up...but with Xander…
With Xander it seemed that nothing was impossible.
Even falling in love.
“Yeah, loser...does something. That...sounds fine to me. And of course you can have Boo, you always have him...unless Jace or my sister decides that they want to pick on you…” He laughed and handed the male a controller. “...I have to warn you, I’m out of practice so…”

“A few practice rounds then!” Xander said with a wide grin. “I wouldn’t want any kind of unfair advantage- and it gives us time to think of what we want if we win hmmm?” He leaned in to bump his shoulder to Nelson’s “Hey- I missed everything about you too.” He added. He did too, he felt guilty at times for clinging to Nelson like a sort of life raft for sanity. But he liked to think he made up for it by the fact they were really friends. In spite of everything else they did for each other.

Beaming, Nelson nodded. “A few practice rounds, yes. That does sound like a very good plan. We can have our fight to the death on Rainbow Road...that sounds like it’ll be the most fun. And the most challenging.” He hated Rainbow Road. Hated it with a deep, burning passion. It was the most beautiful level, true but…
He spent more time falling off of the edge than anything else.
Turning the game on, Nelson scrolled through, picking out his character and a relatively easy course. “...As for prizes...maybe if I win...we could ah. Cuddle and watch a movie together? That sounds like a nice prize for me. I have several months of hugs to catch up on so um...that would...really help to start easing the debt, don’t you think?” Plus. He could just pretend. And that would be nice too.

Xander looked thoughtful... “That sounds like a -great prize-.” He nodded. “I’m picking that too...” he grinned “especially after the wonderful awful of the rainbow road -as it tried to send us to Valhalla! Winner picks the first movie looser picks the second?” He offered. “I can make us milkshakes between rounds too if you want! I’ll front the cost of ice cream too! And cookies!”

Nelson paused, his shy smile spreading over his face. “Yeah, that sounds good to me. That way we both win...I like that a lot. And you know I’ll never say no to milkshakes...we can go down to the corner store, get some snacks and the stuff for the milkshakes and then profit?” He knew that they had a great selection of spicy chips, he had gone there just the other day to make sure of it.
“Game first...and then the store, and then we can cuddle up and start our movies. I think that sounds like an almost perfect night, Xander. You um. Can stay in here if you want. You don’t have to go to the guest room, but ah. I’m sure you know that by now.” Sleepovers normally ended with them sprawled on the bed together, normally at the very least holding hands...it was always nice to wake up tangled beside Xander.
It always felt so safe.
“Unless you want to. Of course.”

“Man- sounds like the perfect evening to me! You have the best ideas man.” He nudged shoulders again, taking what he could. He liked touch when it wasn’t him in trouble. It was fun and relaxing to play the game with Nelson, while he did hope Jace would be alright, he sometimes needed this. He was also trying not to get too hopeful that Nelson’s voiced worries about bottle spinning had been about inanimate objects, because Nelson was polite to a fault.

Nelson smiled shyly again, shifting slightly so his head rested atop Xander’s shoulders. “It’s not hard when I have my inspiration beside me…” His words were soft, and he almost wished he hadn’t said them but...now that they were out all he could do was clear his throat, grinning. “I'm ah...I’m ready to start when you are!”
He could play like this. It was comfortable like this...and besides...it really didn’t matter if he won or lost...either way he’d end up cuddled against Xander, and the thought made him smile all the brighter.
“You have good ideas too, I hope that you know. Like coming over here. That’s clearly the best idea of the day.”

Xander was glad that Nelson’s head was on his shoulder at that moment because he was sort of kind of blushing pretty hard right then How embarrassing, he didn’t want Nelson to feel pressured ever but damn that was really cute. “The fact you’re always open to me doing s**t like this, that’s the best… admit it. We both know I’m a human train wreck.’ he chuckled. “Except when it comes to spicy food and desserts, and Mario Cart! then I’m master of the universe!” He cheered and then added. “Unless Q or …Jace get involved, then I’m right back to train wreck.” He laughed. “What movie are you going to pick?” He added as they cued up the game.
