The cloak was thin and light while also sturdy and securely woven. It was perfect for what Nok wanted, except for one thing. It was about as bright a white as he could ever have imagined a cloth could be. He needed it for hunting, but this was sure to glow in the dark! He had been warned by the sales clerk when he'd ordered it that it only came in lighter colors, but this was ridiculous!
So, it was time to experiment. While he could have asked his mother for assistance to make the process easier, Nok felt the need to accomplish this on his own. Sentiment could, on the rare occasion, outweigh efficiency. He sat at the shore of one of the smaller inland lakes that led to a cave system. There, he collected the dark soil from under the water and the deep moss that grew on the cave walls and combined it into a bucket with ashes from a fire back home. He sat on his knees, trying to scrub the dark tones into the unfortunately pale fabric, tongue flicking out with intent focus to tease along the scar that split his lips almost vertically, starting near one side of his nose and ending at the opposite end of his chin.

One would think that after his childhood meeting with an Elaria amazon, Caolan would have learned to be wary of straying too far out into the forest. But... in all honesty, after years of escaping into the wilds to collect materials for crafts and painting, the prentice had become painfully familiar with the area - one would even suggest he was a bit stir crazy here. Yael was sizeable, enough so that there were plenty of settlements he had never been to, but the landscape had grown... boring to him, especially compared with his father's tales of the colorful and unique lands he had explored throughout the years.
Caolan was chafing, and with that a bit of foolhardy exploration probably shouldn't have been surprising.
While he wasn't in this area specifically for the soil and moss, when Caolan realized where his feet had carried him he decided that it woudl be a good time to top off his dyes and paints. So... imagine his surprise when he broke from the treeline and saw someone else here.
At first, he froze, worried it was... well. Another one of the Elaria- but... thankfully, the cloak and size told him soon enough it was another earthling, and the curls of purple that spilled just a bit around what he could see of the face reassured him that it was another Yaeli.
"Oh! Um-- hello there! Friend-- er... neighbor?" He greeted, somewhat awkwardly. Then, clearing his throat and reminding himself of Alfina's directions on how to be more sociable, he tacked on a smile and strode a bit closer,

The first breath of a sound made Nok's entire body tense up, one muddy hand flashing to the handle of his dagger and legs bracing to spring away from the noise. It was already an instinctive reaction, but past events made him extra wary of surprises. When he realized that it was actual words being spoken to him rather than some manic war cry, his body relaxed while his hand remained on the dagger grip. "Friend? I know you?" Well, that certainly didn't seem right! He raised his other hand to move his hood and hair back out of his vision. After a moment, he shook his head. "No I don't."

The other young man jolted to attention so suddenly that Caolan, despite himself, tensed as well, his hands immediately raising infront of his chest in a gesture of surrender. Foolish though it was, the only weapon he had on him was a dagger at his belt - admittedly one that he used more for whittling or cutting plants than self defense. "Right." Caolan felt foolish, but decided that was a better thing to feel than a knife in his gut, so he would take it!
He swept his eyes around the little lake, then back to the Yaeli, curiosity refusing to let him keep moving along. "Well- I'm Caolan - from the nearby settlement. I don't think I've seen you? I mean- not that I HAVE to have seen you, but -" His eyes drifted over the scar on the man's face, one he was sure he would have recognized if he'd seen it, but after a moment he realized he was being rude and lifted his eyes away, "Yeah! So-- nice to meet you?"

After another long moment of studying the stranger, Nok let his hand drop away from the dagger. The guy didn't seem like much of a threat, but looks could be deceiving. He would just have to keep a close eye on the guy while he was there. "Different settlement," he observed. "Would know you for sure if you were in mine." His eyes squinted at the stare he was getting, but there was little other sign that he had noticed. Perhaps he was already used to it? His brow rose with curiosity when Caolan seemed intent on remaining. These more 'cultured' Yaeli always had such interesting reactions to him, but "nice" was rarely an initial reaction he got. "..Thanks?" He cocked his head slightly, one hand reaching pack into the mud bucket to protectively touch the soaking cloak. "You said Caolan? My name's Nok. You here for something?"

Now would probably be a good time to leave. Or... to carry on with his business. Caolan knew that, somewhere in his head, but - the curiosity of meeting a new person, especially one who seemed so capable, had him stuck in place with a sort of childish fascination. Then, the other man -- Nok, he'd said -- shifted his arm, and Caolan's eyes dropped to the bucket, moving in just a little closer to peer down at it. The dark, murky color - and the staining on Nok's skin - made it clear, to Caolan at least, what it was.
Unintentionally, he ignored the pointed question, and instead blossomed into a huge grin. "Oh! So - you use the moss here too? It's really useful, isn't it? Did you know that you can dry it out and crush it into this sort of powder, and it's almost as dark a pigment as charcoal can be? And it sticks a lot better - but if you DON'T dry it, and use it as is, the color is still really nice, but it gets this sort of... green undercolor to it- which is nice! Really nice, I like that color too, but- what I'm saying is you can get TWO colors from ONE plant-- isn't that pretty incredible?"
As he spoke, Caolan's hands swept in grand circles, gesticulating wildly and excitedly as his voice babbled on with frenetic energy, eyes lighting up with delight at sharing something he enjoyed.

The sudden shift in Caolan from awkward greeting to confident excitement surprised Nok enough to make him lean back from the onslaught of energy. Where had that come from?! His eyes dropped to look at the bucket, and then back up to his new acquaintance. This much excitement about moss? "I.. didn't know," he said while a slow smile curled his lips. That wasn't just excitement; that was passion. Passion was useful. "Never tried it dry before. ..I like the green." He pulled the cloak out of the bucket and shook it out for an inspection with no concern about where the mud might splatter. "Cloth was too bright. Need it for hunting, see?"

Generally, this was the point in time where Caolan's infodump drove off most strangers. His twin sister was always so sweet in listening to him pour out words, and his parents both supported his creativity wholeheartedly, but that didn't outweigh the heavy, awkward beat that usually followed Caolan's excitement. So- when he calmed, he wilted just a bit, completely expecting Nok to roll his eyes at him or give him a strange look.
Instead, Caolan was seemingly rewarded by being allowed to see what Nok was working on, and the look of absolute delight that flash across his face was almost blinding. He squatted down next to his new acquaintance, his hands settled against his knees as he peered at the cloth. Surprisingly, it was already getting rather dark - which surprised him, because he'd seen the moss work before and generally it didn't go that fast. He tilted his head, enthralled.
"Ohh... that's gonna be a handsome cloak when you're done." Caolan complimented, eyes dragging over the mud with open curiosity. "What else is in there? That colors - not what I expected!"

The next excited wave of energy was only a little less shocking that the first had been. No one had ever flashed a smile that big at him before, and then to just plop himself right here next to him? A strange guy, indeed! He nodded in agreement with the observation, rather pleased to hear the praise toward his work. Still, his fingers kept a firm hold on the cloak. As tempting as it was to just relax around this unique figure, Caolan could change at any moment and attempt to take Nok's work. "Moss, water mud, and ashes." His free hand turned to point where he had gotten the first two ingredients nearby. "Ashes works good."

The moss... water mud... and ash? Caolan had used charcoal to draw sketches with, but he'd assumed ash and mud would rinse clean when mixed with water. He made a soft noise of understanding, not seeming to notice, or at least to mind, the protective grip Nok held on the cloak. "Just from the fire? Weird! Have you dyed a lot with those colors? Where did you learn this?"
As creative as he was, Caolan wasn't... normally that invested in clothes. He'd helped around the village here and there, namely in setting up dye tubs for thread and other reams of cloth, but he'd never been part of the process himself. He was more the type to make a thicker pigment to apply with a brush to something like wood, or reams of paper.

Nok nodded lightly. "The wood burns dark, transfer char to cloth. Right?" Caolan sure did ask a lot of questions. He shrugged his shoulders while folding the cloak back into the mud bucket. "Learned just now. I hunt, but ma dyes sometimes. Watched her a little." If his attempt at dyeing the cloth by throwing things that stained into one bucket made him seem smart... well, all the better. "Do you dye things? You got all excited earlier," he observed plainly, both hands in the bucket once again to scrub the stains into the cloak again.

Nok spoke matter of factly, with a sort of succinct and to the point tone that made him feel serious. That this serious person was actually talking with him about color was... exciting to Caolan. It made sense that Nok would have learned from a parent, but - that he was a hunter was a surprise. It shouldn't have been, with how alert, serious, and dangerous he'd seemed, with that hand on his knife before, but somehow it was.
"Dye? Not really. Sometimes. But- the same stuff you can dye with, you can mix with oil and turn into paint." Caolan shifted and unclipped the bag that hung at his hip, pulling out a book; one with thick pages. When it flipped it open, the pages were filled with charcoal sketches on some, and smears of paint on others - depicting imagined scenes of places he'd never actually seen before, based on his father's recollections. They weren't overly detailed, or even terribly skilled at this point, but the colors were vivid and applied carefully. "Like this - see?"

As usual, one hand remained in the bucket to grip the cloak. His other hand was used to brace against the ground, prepared to react to whatever it was Caolan was reaching for. Was this when the mean underside was revealed?! Oh.. a book? Once he was certain that the book wasn't going to harm him, he dared to lean forward the slightest bit to peek at the sketches. "Paint.. is dye for paper?" he asked. The coal sketches were familiar, but the painted papers were new. "It's like what the shop has on the wall," he realized, thinking about the pictures that he had only ever seen from a distance. These images were unrecognizable and fantastical in nature. "What're you use the painting for?"

Caolan had paused briefly when his strange new friend reacted defensively, but once more he handled it with grace, and opted to pretend like he hadn't noticed it at all. He brightened up at that observation though, once again flashing him a smile. "Mmhm! Like the signs they paint - on wood, in town." He agreed brightly.
As for... what it was FOR-- Caolan once again settled down a bit, biting the edge of his lip as he looked down at the papers. Honestly, he knew it was a luxury - he didn't have to hunt and work, like his siblings and parents did. He was lucky in that, as one of the youngest kids in the family, they all did the hard work for him, and they'd all humored him by having him help with chores around the village that appealed to him, not necessarily anything that would help him survive on his own.
He knew he was spoiled in that regard, but - from a hunter, he knew it was probably going to come off as ... childish, foolish even. "Well- because I like it, and it's pretty?" He started, a bit weakly.
Then - he puffed himself up a bit, and nodded decisively. "My father works on the mainland, making maps - but nobody here wants to go and use them. They think the mainland is scary, right? So- one day, I want to go and explore those places and show what they look like, how pretty they can be. Then - maybe people will want to explore themselves, one day."

The mood shift was quite noticeable, as though the awkward boy that had first approached him was back again. He turned his head slightly with confusion and interest while waiting for the hesitant reply. He had to admit.. he didn't quite understand what Caolan was saying. What use was pretty? Ah, but the maps he could understand. He wrinkled his nose slightly. "He chose to go over there?" He paused and looked Caolan up and down. He would never have guessed! "That mean you wanna go over there?"
