Wangui was playing in the humid forests of Chiume. She wasn't too far from the main camp, looking around for a great place to set up her own club for her Vandrea family. She wanted someplace fun for them to hide out when they were avoiding classes. Uncertain where was a good place, she hummed a little before turning back. Hesperia was around here somewhere, maybe she had a good idea of where they could go and play.
Wangui was really happy that she had a sister to spend time with. Some of the other Vandrea and younger Alkidikes were sisterless. Sure, they had a family, but not someone who bloomed and grew with her. While her and Hesperia were different, they shared enough of the world that they got along quite well. It was nice to share secrets, experiences, and a friendship with her nearly-twin.

There'd been a lot more people around the main camp lately - which was exciting! But... being on their best behavior all the time was starting to get really boring. So when Wangui suggested they go play, Hesperia hadn't been far behind her. In the distance, the mountains of the mainland were swathed in clouds again, and for a moment the curious Yandrea paused to watch for a bit. Then - the crunch of spindly leaves alerted her to her sister coming close again.
"D'you think we'll see a ship today?" She asked, gesturing towards the vista. An older Alkidike mother had told the little ones about the earthling ships out there - had even brought a few trinkets home from their cities. Some of the mothers wrinkled their faces and scowled at the little things, but others poured over them, curious of how they worked. They'd heard, even, of the airships that the Alkidike from the mother tree had taken to get here.

Wangui reached out to grab a stick, dragging it in patterns as she approached her sister. Hesperia was curious, moreso than Wangui. While Wangui was looking for things in the trees, her sister seemed to want to catch sight of the flying ships that traveled north of their island.
Squinting, the girl bent down to her knees and drew a ship around clouds.
"Seems like a clear enough day..." She replied with good nature, before looking up, "But doesn't it fly high above the clouds? Even higher than the birds?"
Wangui never saw it, so her interested had waned. Instead, she was more curious about fighting and stories. But she appreciated her sister's curiousity.
"Would you fly in one if you could?" she asked back.

It was tough to drag her eyes away from the sky, but after a few moments her little mouth pursed with disappointment and she finally angled her head to look at her sister instead. Wangui was right - the ships were supposed to go very high, and the few times she swore she'd seen one, it had ended up a trick of the mind, or a bird.
As for the question - Hesperia dropped down to squat beside her sister, her finger doodling nonsense circles in the dirt. "Well- if I had to." She murmured evasively. It wouldn't do to be too eager, after all.
No Aishan would confess to being afraid, but - well, the thing went very high up, didn't it? And besides, no Yandrea had ever left the isle before - not that Hesperia knew of. They were all still so little... but one day, would they? "If it meant seeing Aisha, or the other goddesses, maybe."

Wangui watched her sister come over, before examining her doodle as the other girl took a moment to think. The delay was telling, and Wangui wondered if her sister wanted to fly away someday. Sure, they all talked about it, but knew deep down they were the future leaders of their tribe and leaving would be...complicated. Wangui let out a little sigh before patting her sister's hand gently.
"When we're adults, we can do whatever we want. Right now we haveta listen to momma..." She said the second part with a difficult sigh, exaggerating with a grin before standing up and dusting off her knees.
"Maybe someday we'll be able to travel with the cousins who go back and forth?" She reassured, before adding, "It'd be fun to train on the road...and maybe see a few earthlings..."

There was a horrible, sinking moment where Hesperia worried her sister would chastise her or make a face at her. Instead though, Wangui pat at her hand and it was like all the tension leaked out of the little girl. If anything, it seemed like permission for her to stop worrying about her conflicting feelings, if only for a little bit. She laughed and stood up also, exchanging a grin with her twin. "Do you think they really grow rocks out of their flesh? Momma said they do but it sounds so ... weird...!"

Wangui let out a laugh at the thought, before reaching to grab a few dusty stones from the ground. She held them up to her face as if they were sprouting horns. She them moved them to her cheeks.
"So monstrous!" She giggled, before taking one rock and tossing it far off into the woods away from them. Well, as far as the young girl could throw. She was still building muscle.
"Maybe? I heard a rumor that some Aishans have mated with them, and their children bloomed with rocks instead of markings...I don't know why...we're practically perfect."

Hesperia wrinkled her nose at the suggestion, shivering and folding her little arms around her middle. The idea that she could grow rocks out of her skin was scary - why would any Aishan want to do that? "Wouldn't it be hard to fight? You'd be so heavy-" She murmured.

Wangui nodded, "I'm sure...but wouldn't it be cool to have them on your arms? You could punch really hard if you had rock hands!" She giggled again, swinging her fist around, "But I like using spears...then they can't get their rock hands close enough to hit me!"
Pausing again, she leaned closer and whispered, "Do you ever want to...see them?"

Rock hands? Hesperia pursed her lips, but had to concede it was a pretty cool idea. Just... not for her. She liked her markings, the ones that were so similar to her sister's.
"Maybe that's why earthlings are so small." She admitted with a mischevious grin.
Though- when Wangui leaned in, she did as well, her eyebrows shooting up in surprise at the hushed question.
"Earthlings?" She asked, blinking. Well... she was curious, of course, about how others lived their lives... and she did long to explore beyond the isle they'd grown up on. But... what about earthlings?
"Maybe- just once." She added, quickly.

Wangui let out a laugh, she had forgotten they they were indeed small, like a youngling. She figured she'd be taller than an Earthling by the time she was permitted to begin using a spear. But her mirth calmed down quickly when her sister's expression showed surprise at her question. Nodding so her head bobbed with the big buns, she tilted her head at her sister's response.
"Momma says we can't see them...that they would attack us or take us away." She kicked the dirt, before shrugging, "But she also says that we are the strongest...so why couldn't we go see them? We could fight them easily."

Right. They weren't allowed to leave the isle. They were 'the future' of their people, but ... what did that mean exactly? Hesperia hummed softly as her sister spoke, pacing just a bit around the small clearing they'd stopped to talk in, her hands propped on her hips. "But fighting 'em is why the extremists got banished, right?" She pointed out, a bit quietly.

Wangui rubbed her chin thoughtfully, something she saw some of the elders do. She wasn't sure if it worked, but it made her feel like she was thinking harder, so that must be why they did it.
"Yeah...I mean they aren't banished anymore...but apparently they got into a biiiiig fight." She replied, "I don't want to get banished from here, I LOVE it here."

Well, it worked on Hesperia! That motion alone made Wangui, to her, seem very wise, and she listened attentively as she spoke.
"Me too." She said, brightly. Because it was true - sometimes, she wondered about the rest of the world and wanted to see it, but she DID love her other Aishan sisters, and the land they'd taken as their own.
"Maybe... when we're big and strong, it'll be okay to go out and meet earthlings. 'Cause we'll be able to protect the isle then - right?"

Wangui nodded quickly in response, agreeing wholeheartedly.
"Of course, it's just more knowledge, right? We need to know our enemies so we can defend our home. We are the future of this Isle. That's something momma always says."
She moved closer again, "I want to explore all the trees...and protect all the sisters. Both her and far. I want to be the strongest protector for all of my family."
