As loath as she was to see the summer 'heat' disappearing, Sylvirah had also come to accept life as it was. In a few short weeks she would be heading back to the mountain with hopefully enough supplies to get her tribe through the winter and then some! With any luck she would never have to come back down here, and yet...

Leaving Snowelle felt...odd. The woman put her on edge most days, and yet, she couldn't deny how nice it had been to actually have her around. Sylvirah didn't even mind the extra care it took; it gave her mind something to focus on other than the horrors waiting for her in the North. So, while Snowelle was out, she'd set about making a special treat in the kitchen. In the span of a few hours she'd turned the pleasant space into a room reeking of fish and animal fat. Ah, the smells of home~

Work had been nothing but stressful. Client after client grumpy about one thing or another, a coworker mixing up paperwork, his pen broke and ruined a nice shirt... Ergon was more than ready to get home, grab a bite from the kitchen, and hide out in his room. At least there, he could work on his plans for Iryana in peace. Just a little more saved up, and he could make things official.

The happy thoughts of his girlfriend were abruptly cut short the moment he opened the door to his family's home and caught that first pungent whiff of.. what the heck was that? Was mother trying to cook by herself again?! He hung up his cloak and marched through to follow his nose to the kitchen. "Mother?" He grimaced and paused in the doorway, scanning the bounty beyond. "Sylvirah? Did you have to bring the whole dock back with you?"

"Heil og sæl, Ergon." Sylvirah raised her arms and wiped some sweat off her brow with the back of her forearm. The young woman's hands were a variety of colors ranging from as bright as the berries lining the table to an almost pale yellow hue. Her hair was tied back with several of the smaller braids escaping to seek refuge around her neck.

"Grab a plate and eat your fill. There were a few hare in the shares this morning so I've got the meat over there." She motioned with her head to the much more mundane pot of food set on a nearby table top to cool. "And when you're done with that I'll have something special made." Even as she talked Sylvirah never stopped. In her wooden bowl she manually kneaded a strange mixture of dried fish, something akin to animal fat and a handful of berries she tossed in. It was hard work and required a fair amount of force to get it to blend, but it was slowly turning out.

Ergon's brow knit. Heil.. what? "What did you call me?" he asked facetiously, fanning the air in front of his face. He walked over to the indicated pot to give it a peek, finally smelling something a little more tolerable. When he went to look at what was currently being made though, his nose wrinkled further. He liked fish as much as the next guy, but what was this interesting looking concoction?

"Special.." he murmured, giving Sylvirah a side look. "While I appreciate the thought... perhaps you are thinking too hard?"

Rolling her eyes, Sylvirah pressed down hard on the mixture to create a dip in the center. She then reached for a jar of thick cream, added just a bit and started kneading once more. "Where I am from it is a greeting, though you may have preferred 'welcome home'."

When she was finally satisfied with her work, Sylvirah stepped back to give her arms a rest. It looked as creamy as any southern treat and if it weren't for the smell one might have thought it actually was one. "I know that my arrival has been stressful for your family, but it was never my intention to make it so. Even so your mother has been kind to me, whether she realizes it or not, and you've been very accommodating."

Seeing as he had yet to make a plate of his own Sylvirah moved to where she knew the plates were kept. She got one down, dished out a healthy helping of rabbit and moved over to put a dollop of the sweet scream near the edge of the plate. "I wasn't sure what you would prefer since we've never dined together, but Snowelle seems to like sweets so I thought this would do." Stepping over by the table, Sylvirah sat the plate out and motioned for him to sit. "Come and eat. I won't stay longer than it takes to clean up."

It was certainly strange to hear Sylvirah tell him welcome home. "Okay. Stick to 'heil go shell,' then," he replied. Despite the snark, he realized that he was actually getting used to seeing Sylvirah around the house. It wasn't long ago that he probably would have been upset with her presence. Yet, as she was saying... his mother had been a driving force in the matter. He cleared his throat and looked away bashfully. "You've been good for mother, in your own way. Speaking of mother, is she out with the nurse?"

Lips pressing, he peeked into the bowl of mystery snack. What he would prefer? A half smile rose and he followed after to tentatively sit. She sure filled a plate. Perhaps he would be filled up by the rabbit and be too full for the surprise. "This is.. quite generous of you. Thank you."

"Heil og sæl," She corrected, looking at him with a very pointed look. He tried and she didn't expect him to understand the northern tongue, but at the very least it wasn't shell. "Yes, she did. They went earlier this afternoon and should be coming back soon." The woman had been very adamant about Sylvirah accompanying them, but she'd made her excuses not to go. Most times when she could sneak away it was solely for a hunt but in this case she had plans.

Instead of fixing a plate for herself Sylvirah simply gathered a rather large mixing spoon, scooped up a dollop of the sweetened concoction for herself and and leaned against the counter as she ate. "Back home we only make akutaq on special occasions so I wasn't sure if I would remember how to mix it properly." Taking a bite, she found herself smiling and going in for another, "I should have made more."

"Heil og sæl," he repeated, raising a forkful of the hare in a sort of toast. It would be interesting to see if mother would react at all to the stench now filling the home. At least the hare was worth eating. He wasn't sure what he had expected from a northern heathen, but he was pleasantly surprised with the result.

That didn't make him any less concerned about the- "Akutaq?" Had he heard of that before? "What constitutes a special occasion in the north, if you don't mind me asking?" He pressed his lips slightly while gingerly scooping up a small sample onto his spoon. A lesser man would avoid a special made meal. Ergon was not so small! He tucked the spoon into his mouth before he could change his mind, bracing himself for the taste to match the smell. After a moment, he let out a surprised 'huh' and set his spoon back down. It.. actually wasn't bad.

"It's a mixture of dried fish, dried mammu meat, mammu fat, and salmonberry. You blend it together until it's fluffy and if it isn't sweet enough you can add some wild carrot." Granted, hers was more dense than it was fluffy, creating more of a pudding consistency but the taste was still there. If she'd had the proper tools then she could have made it how it should have been, but all of her equipment was still in her old hut.

She took one last bite of the mixture, cleaning off her spoon in the process, before placing it with the other dirty dishes. "Traditionally it's made when a child is born or when a legendary feat is performed. In my lifetime we made it when we returned from a successful hunt. With the wilds as they were that was a hard enough task in itself."

Now that he was finally eating she pushed off the counter and started going about cleaning up.

He poked at the plate to make the mixture jiggle and chuckled lightly. Would it be better if it was actually fluffy? "I know mother will appreciate that you made dinner for us tonight." There was a brief pause. "..As do I," he said as he took another bite of the main dish. It was a new feeling, to be sure.

Leaning back in the chair as his belly filled, Ergon's expression softened the slightest bit. "Well, no children have been born here lately, I doubt anything would be considered a 'legendary' feat as of late, and this wasn't hunted for. What occasion is it that has you making this?"

"...You're welcome." It was strange, for sure, to be having this moment with him. When Sylvirah first made her way to Zena she never would have imagined it, but now? She couldn't help giving in to a little smile.

"I'm officially leaving." She filled the wash basin with freshly boiled water and after adding some washing powder, Sylvirah got to scrubbing. "I met up with a...friend, from the Ild'vann while I've been here. He's agreed to help me transfer the supplies back to the mountain." She neglected to mention other key facts in her arrangement, but surely Ergon would find all that out with time.

"I thought you might wish to celebrate having one less nuisance in your life."

Ergon's eyes went vaguely distant. His instant reaction was, naturally, to be happy to be rid of the complications Sylvirah's presence brought to his house. Yet, there was a strange tugging of remorse as well. ..Oh well. Whatever brought that on would fade with time. "I am pleased to hear you found help. I know you have been eager to return to your family." That last word dragged the slightest bit, but he shook that off, too. "You needn't worry about helping me to celebrate though," he mused, a playful smirk rising along with his spoon. "The town already has a whole party planned for when you cross that border."

His tongue slowly dragged along the spoon in a contemplative manner, expression going more serious again. "Just.. so you know... you are welcome here any time that you wish in the future," he said as casually as possible, eyes tight on the spoon he held. "Mother will be happy to see you."

Her hands stilled in the dishwater. The whole town? She supposed that must be about right. She certainly hadn't made any friends during her brief stay, and gossip had kept anyone of worth from coming around her. At best she'd had a few of the men in town thinking she was an easy lay, but Sylvirah kept that to herself. "Yes, well, Ada's excited to see the mountains again. Being in her pen for so long isn't good for her." That much was true; the chiavi was snippier these days than she had been in a while and it was all due to Sylvirah's attention being spent in town instead of on the hunt. In due time that would change and everyone would be happier.

Right?

She had just picked up her pace with the scrubbing rag when his words caused her to look over her shoulder. Had he....? When Sylvirah turned back to her work she was smiling. "I would like to visit her again. I've never known what it feels like to have a mother, and even if she isn't completely aware of who I am I am grateful to her. I'm sure when the day comes she'll throw me out, but until then I would like to keep working with her, if that's alright with you."

It would be best to keep his attention on the food. After the shock of the revelations surrounding Sylvirah's circumstances, he had suspected that he would never be alright with her presence. Yet, here he was, enjoying food that she had made and actually inviting her to return... What was this world coming to?

Listening to the reply, Ergon only smiled sadly. How was mother going to react when her "daughter" left? Would she even notice? She would surely notice the absence on her better days. He peeked over to Sylvirah's back, and then quickly again to scraping his fork along the plate. Maybe, just maybe, he would be okay with it. "I suppose I might be alright." Who would have thought...
