Like it or not, Padma wasn't built of the same stuff as Uzumati, and she wasn't nearly as comfortable living in the outdoors as he was. So... despite her decision to stay with him, this time, practicality said that she needed to make a small, civilized area for herself.

Before the first month was out, she had managed to build a rope ladder, and with Uzumati's help had attached it to a large, thick branch of the nearest massive tree - the one that Uzumati's den had been found inside, as it so happens. However, beyond that, little progress had been made on a living platform, like the home she had once shared with her father. She was still... for the most part - sleeping in the little den with Uzumati, despite the lack of space, although she excitedly had begun work on a shifter-style vine-rope hammock so that, hopefully soon, they could sleep in the trees without fear of falling.

...Soon.

As it was, Padma had been forced to return to the village for supplies, and had been gone for a few days - but! Now... she was back, her slim frame laden with bags, as was her aldabuck companion (who they'd managed to find a few days after the storm). As she approached the familiar area where they'd been staying, she bit her lip and looked around, hoping to spot her companion.

She'd learned not to call out in this dangerous place - whether or not this was 'home' to her now, witu and other creatures still prowled this forest. Instead, she quickly hastened to the base of their tree and began to unload Ishtar, reassuringly stroking the aldabuck's jaw.

"Hello? Are you here?" She finally called in a soft voice towards the den, kneeling down and peeking inside.

Needless to say the last couple of weeks had been far more hectic than Uzumati was accustomed to. He had been busy hunting while also helping Padma out with her building project. The concept was not completely foreign to Uzumati because once upon a time ago he had lived in a treehouse with a hermit before the older man had been murdered by Extremists. He had buried such memories far into the corners of his mind to avoid the trauma but the more time he spent around Padma the more he started to remember the good times he had with the older man. It was strange to recall certain things, like the way that they had shared breakfast over a campfire and the way that the old man sang around the house every morning. However, it wasn't always the good but Uzumati had so far managed to try and hide the random nightmares of his past whenever they occurred. It was okay if he had to remember because every moment with Padma was worth it and the fears just reminded him of why he had to be strong so that he could protect her.

Whenever she left for the village he found himself riddled with nightmares and worries. Still, Uzumati held himself together the best that he could because he didn't want the flower to worry about him. Instead he forced himself to focus on doing things that kept his hands and his mind occupied. If he was physically exhausted then he could just pass out at night without any dreams. So while Padma was away he found himself finishing up anything that he could, including gathering more wood to build around the area she had built. Uzumati wasn't certain how long Padma would linger but the man had thought long and hard about what he could do to help her feel more comfortable. So on the first day that Padma was away he plotted and plotted until the second day he trekked across the forest to a long abandoned place. Gathering all that he could from the area, Uzumati came back and started to set up everything that he found. Some tools for gardening, some extra wood, rope and even a chest full of old blankets and other various trinkets. He had tried to add a bit to the wooden platform, just little things because he wasn't certain how the larger pieces came together - something he learned after a frustrating morning of grunts and yelps of pain as some loose pieces crashed down.

What he did find that he could do well though was taking some of the gardening tools that he had found to dig a small plot a little ways behind their tree. He knew that villagers liked to grow their own vegetables and herbs so hopefully it would be good for Padma. Uzumati had even made something like a fence around it with larger branches and the like taken from fallen trees throughout the forest. He dug them into the ground and jabbed them sharply into the earth before tying rope around each part to connect them. While he wasn't working on trying to tidy up the place by organizing the piles of furs in the den area and straightening up pieces of the wood that were actually secured to the tree, Uzumati was gathering and hunting. Already he had a pile of nuts and some fruits hidden in the crevice of a nearby tree that he used for storage and the man had gone out that morning to hunt fresh game. He was returning from his hunt when he spotted the very familiar and missed figure peering into his den. "Padma?" His voice called out in a soft whisper as he immediately perked up. She was back! Uzumati carefully dropped his load onto the ground and moved forward so that he could greet his companion.

Even now, Padma worried that she was... burdening herself on the man, and perhaps she was simply misreading Uzumati on this regard. But - in moments like that she had to remind herself that he'd said he liked her here. Still, she worried that he might have changed his mind now that she'd been gone for a few days, and finding the tree empty had only made her more worried. Not that she could blame him - he'd made a life for himself out here, and adding another mouth to feed was likely a lot of effort. He'd also hinted that, in the past, he had a number of places that he stayed, not just this one, and Padma wondered if she was keeping him chained here now, out of some misplaced sense of responsibility to take care of her.

Leaning back from the den, she turned her attention to the area by their tree and finally saw all the work that had been done - the wood that had been assembled and gathered, the makeshift fence - and more things than when she had left!

Thankfully, she didn't have long to dwell on this alone - she heard a voice from behind her, and turning she saw the familiar shape of her companion, somewhat messy from his hunt, but all in one piece.

Her eyes lit up, and immediately Padma set her bags down and went to meet him, smiling brightly up at him. "Uzumati! I'm home!" She chirped, excitedly, biting her tongue before 'I missed you' could slip out. Instead, she peered at his load, impressed and curious, "You've had such a busy day! And done so much while I was gone - can I help?"

If Uzumati were a witu then he would have a tail wagging whenever Padma called out his name so happily. All he could do was smile brightly towards Padma as he quickly approached, his graceful and practiced movements from years of hunting easily closing the distance between them. Once they met and were face to face the man hesitated with confusion for his next move. Padma was back but what did he do now? He had been tempted to check over her and to make certain that she was okay but there didn't seem to be anything wrong. His gaze flickered between Padma, the various bags sitting on the ground behind her and then towards his own load that he had discarded on the ground in his excitement to see his companion again. Uzumati pursed his lips thoughtfully before giving a slight shrug of his shoulders. Was his game so important when she seemed to have so much stuff? He gestured behind Padma and tilted his head questioningly. What all did she have? Wasn't she the one who needed more help after traveling back from the village? He could make quick work of his game later after they unpacked all of the mysterious bags that Padma had returned with. Perhaps if Uzumati was honest it was curiosity that drove him towards helping Padma and forgetting about his own tasks for the moment.

There was an awkward moment where it looked like the two might embrace, or reach to clasp hands. Instead, Padma pushed her hair behind one ear and smiled, a bit shyly, her eyes following his gaze towards her bags. "Oh! Yes-- I was able to get a few tools for building the treehouse -- and I took notes from a nice man in the settlement on the best way to set the foundation up! I... might have brought a few treats back too..."

Padma lured Uzumati into helping her gather the bags, pulling them all back to the mouth of their den, where the leaf woman took a grateful seat in the grass, cross-legged, tearing into her bags eagerly. She showed off a variety of tools, mainly for preparing wood she'd been told. She'd brought medical supplies, carefully packed spices and salt, and a bag of what looked to be carefully protected small pots.

With everything unpacked, Padma made a face and sighed, looking at Uzumati from the corner of her eyes. "It seemed like so much more before-- did I forget anything?"

Uzumati plopped on the ground next to Padma, his thigh slightly pressing against her own as he scooted closer to watch as she brought out the variety of tools. Some of them made sense while a couple made him tilt his head in confusion before moving onto even more things. He made certain to study each thing that Padma brought out and even leaned closer to smell the spices, some of which were familiar while others seemed very new and....strong. One was so foreign to his nose that it was almost tempting to open it and check it out more had he not gotten the sudden urge to sneeze, the tingling sensation making his face scrunch up for a moment before finally passing without a sound. It seemed that the flower definitely needed a few extra things in comparison to the bare minimum lifestyle that Uzumati had raised himself in. Honestly he didn't mind the strange things that she brought with her because they could be so fascinating but it did make him wonder exactly how much more other earthlings required in their daily lives. It was far easier to just focus on hunting and gathering when necessary and lounging about in the forest all day in his humble opinion. But it seemed to mean a lot to Padma and Uzumati forced himself to study the habits that Padma had and the way that she went about taking care of everything. Slowly but surely he was picking up more and feeling a bit more....civilized if that were possible.

Her question made him pause, his cheeks almost flushing with embarrassment as he pondered her question. Did she forget anything? The man slowly shook his head before giving a small, sheepish smile. Uzumati did have things to share with her but he also found his gaze lingering on the small pots. What was inside of those? It was so very tempting to reach over and open one for himself but instead Uzumati behaved and gestured towards the pots to show his curiosity. Did those contain the missing pieces? Or had she truly forgotten something?

What a precious smile. Padma felt that now familiar fluttering in her chest, and for a moment she smiled at him, smitten despite herself. Thankfully, Uzumati was good at provided distractions (even if he WAS one, himself, more often than not-), and Padma visibly perked up when he gestured to the little pots. "This is a treat." She announced with a giddy laugh, plucking up one of the little pots. The top was sealed with a bit of waxed leather to keep it preserved, but she peeled it back unapologetically.

Inside - were small fruits, a few inches long, which Uzumati was likely familiar with as those foraged during the rainy season. Only - they were preserved in thick, sugary syrup. "These are called 'spoon sweets'. They'll stay good for a long, long time- so we can enjoy some of these whenever we feel like treating ourselves! Here--"

Carefully, she pulled a wooden spoon from the utensils she kept in her bag (though they ate with their hands more often than not, she hoped to reintroduce them to her life before too long), and took a generous spoonful out. Then- she held it up for him to eat, eyebrows raised expectantly.

[Uzumati via Discord]

A slight frown of confusion crossed his features. The little pots were treats? They looked so strange and Uzumati was honestly surprised when she took the cover off and revealed the familiar pieces of fruit. "Oh!" A sound of surprise left his throat as he leaned forward and studied the treat. So it was the fruits that he had before but they were different because of that glaze? Either way if Padma was excited about them then he was certain that they had to be delicious! When she moved the spoonful of glazed fruits towards him, Uzumati found himself blinking in confusion. Did he....did he just eat it? His hands inched forward as if to bat the spoon playfully before he lowered them with a slight grin towards Padma. It had been a joke but honestly he was for some reason embarrassed and when he finally did dart forward to grab the fruit with his mouth, the man was quick almost like some stray animal. Darting back a couple of inches after grabbing a bite, Uzumati finally swallowed and found himself enjoying the super sweet flavors. "Mmm!" His gaze widened as he realized that it really did taste good and without hesitation the man scooted back next to Padma almost expectantly. He bit on his bottom lip as he studied her with anticipation, his emerald gaze bright with interest.

Padma laughed and angled the spoon away from his batting hand, matching his grin with one of her own. It was a delight to see him coming out of his shell more and more - each smile felt so precious, to her, and made that feeling in her chest go all sorts of crazy. He did, ultimately, take a bite of the sweets, and Padma waited expectantly with raised eyebrows, then smiled once more at his approval, then laughed with delight when he moved back for seconds.

Obligingly she scooped another spoon, and offered it for him again, feeling giddy satisfaction that he was letting her spoil him like this. Her excuse was that she didn't think she could handle him trying to scoop it out with his fingers, then making a mess of himself - but honestly, she was doing this more for herself. "Good, isn't it? It's sugar - it soaks up a lot of the flavors of the fruit, but also preserves it for a long time. But we can't eat too much or we might feel sick."

[Uzumati via Discord]

Uzumati's lips pursed in a small pout whenever Padma told him that they shouldn't eat too much of the sweet. He had to reluctantly agree though since it seemed that his stomach did turn upside down a bit whenever he had a few more bites of the sweets. It was like when he had way too many berries whenever the bushes bloomed for the first time in spring.....not the most pleasant aftermath indeed. But at the same time was it fair that he got to try it while she simply watched? Uzumati's eyes narrowed slightly as he held out his hands for the pot and the spoon. It was an awkward device for a man who had gotten accustomed to just ripping into everything with his hands and teeth but if Padma thought it necessary then he would use it as well! Only he wasn't planning on eating the sweets himself but was rather preparing himself to hold up the spoon so that he could let her try to treat as well. There was nothing wrong with that, right?

Perhaps afterwards he could show her all the hard work that he had done around the area and see if any of the old treasures he had recovered would be helpful. Uzumati was just hopeful that he could be helpful since he felt guilty that Padma seemed to be working so hard to make this place. Who knew that one flower could bring so many changes to his life in such a short time? Yet Uzumati could not find himself disgruntled by her presence in any way. He rather felt happier around her and was proud in his own accomplishments...especially the ones that made her smile instead of frowning with worry because of him.

Spirits, but Uzumati made the cutest expressions. She bit her lip as she watched him enjoy the treat, her eyes crinkling into a smile when he enjoyed his second mouthful. But - then he made a face at her, and reached out for the jar. A flash of disappointment hit through her, but Padma handed it over without complaint... only perk up, with pink cheeks, when he unsteadily held the spoon out for her. A shy, but delighted smile rose on her face as she leaned forward, carefully pushing a longer lock of hair behind one ear as she took a bite, humming happily at the delicious taste. "Thank you- I'm glad we could enjoy it, together." She said, a bit quietly after, casting her eyes at him.

For a moment, she just... looked at him, distracted and lovestruck, but eventually she jolted herself and reached to retrieve the jar, sealing it once again with the waxed leather lid. "S-so-- I see you've been busy while I was gone! A garden!! What else have you been working on?"

He had never been so nervous before. What if he spilled the sweet fruits on her or somehow managed to mess this up in another way? But whenever Padma managed to take that final bite, Uzumati felt a mixture of relief and something similar to pride in his chest. It was hard not to be so happy whenever she looked at him like that and even the soft humming was beautiful to his ears. Even if he had been raised in a town the man would have been attracted to the flower's beauty and sweet nature that touched his spirits so. All he could do was nod shyly at her comment in agreement. He was so thankful that he could do these things together with another person again, especially since it was Padma.

His own lovestruck thoughts halted as she brought up his work. "Mm." He responded eagerly with a wide grin before hopping up to his feet to show the way. Taking her hand he prepared to show her about the area and around the little garden he had dug, the fence, the small area of the home that he had worked on while opting to skirt around the series of broken boards that had previous crashed down while she was away due to his own mistakes. Then there were the trunks that he crouched in front of, his hands almost hesitant before he popped them open with a slight click. There was a layer of dust, some cobwebs that made him sneeze but once Uzumati batted a lot of that out of the way it revealed some tightly folded quilts with handmade designs that had somehow survived time thanks to the wooden chest. He pulled it out and let out another sneeze while shaking it out and laying it lightly on the ground, his movement revealing a series of little kitchen gadgets and the like inside of the chest as well. Once that was finished he glanced towards Padma with a small smile and gestured for her to look through it all.

He was holding her hand! It wasn't the first time, but somehow the ease with which he reached for her only served to send Padma further into a tailspin. She could hardly keep the smile off her face, and instead tried her best to focus on all his hard work. The progress he'd made was reassuring, and the vision of a garden, a bit rough around the edges but still theirs made her eager to start planting. The trunks, however, were a surprise, and Padma looked at him questioningly when he presented them.

Clearly, he'd gotten them from somewhere that wasn't the village... and the age of them said they'd been stowed away for some time. Padma still understood so little of what had happened to Uzumati as a boy, and had assumed his parents to be gone... but had he returned to his old home to get these? Reverent, she slid her hand along the old quilts and appliances, sets of well worn tools and sewing kits, and other odds and ends that made her heart squeeze.

He wanted to share these with her? "Oh... Uzumati." She breathed, looking at him again. "They're beautiful - thank you! They'll be so useful around our home, and... and it's like a housewarming gift from-" She trailed off, heartbroken for him but also touched. Then, overcome with her own thoughts, Padma moved closer and slung her arms around his shoulders, drawing him in to press their cheeks together, squeezing him tightly.

Uzumati was both nervous and delighted to show Padma around their little area and through the scattered belongings he had gathered. When he spotted the happy smile that was on her face his heart melted and the man couldn't resist how his own lips curved upwards in response. When she thanked him he felt almost shy, his gaze darting away as he nodded in agreement to her statement. It would be useful and like a house....wait. His brow furrowed in confusion but before he could fully ponder her words the man found himself getting hugged. Immediately any worrisome thoughts dissolved and he found himself tightening his grip around Padma, her warmth giving him stability and light despite his tangled emotions. As she pressed their cheeks together, Uzumati rubbed his cheek against her own in gratitude.

He definitely knew that his day would be considerably brighter now that the flower was back from her trip. It was selfish of him but he loved spending time with her and hoped that it would be a bit again before she left. And maybe he could be the one to surprise her with some sort of sweet treat next time? Maybe, just maybe! Uzumati smiled at the thought as he continued enjoying Padma's embrace, the worries in his heart quietly floating away with every moment.
