After making their plea, Pyrrha wasn't sure what to expect. She'd heard from a few of the elders that it could weeks, months, even years for a response, but it was impossible not to remain optimistic. After all, it hadn't taken an eon for Esena to bless Zayana so why should it be any different for them? Maybe it was a little foolish to think they would be given the same treatment, maybe she should have been more worried than she was, but Pyrrha just couldn't help it.

She was just so close to having her dreams realized that she couldn't see anything bad happening.

Everyday she traveled to Esena, hoping for an answer to her prayers and everyday there wasn't a bloom she went home with a shred of worry. She tried to remain optimistic, especially in front of Kanika, but as the days passed Pyrrha's facade started to crack. Was it...was it truly meant to be?

"Once a day, Pyrrha." The elder had shooed her off with a sympathetic sigh. "Just because you keep staring doesn't mean a bloom is going to sprout."

So, she'd stayed away a full week hoping for news and when nothing came she was positively going mad. So, she packed a little bag of snacks and went in search of girlfriend. "Kanika? I'm going to see Esena, would you like to come?"

Every day Kanika watched Pyrrha make her way to the tree and come back somber. Kanika dared not go every day but she did go once a week, to see if perhaps there was something to see. Good news to be had…. Which was not the case. It was hard when her sister had been blessed so quickly, but Kani tried to at least put on a smiling face in front of Pyrrha and the others. In private, often she cracked and found tears swelling around her eyes as anger and grief filled her. There was nothing from with them, why wasn’t Esena blessing them?

But soon enough, Kanika stopped going altogether and any time she passed the great tree she narrowed her eyes and quietly swore at it. She wasn’t just robbing Kanika of happiness for a little one, but Pyrrha too and this she could not forgive. She deeply wanted children, but she knew how much Pyrrha wanted them too and it broke her heart that Esena wasn’t blessing them just as quickly as she had her sister. She didn’t know if they could even last years to see if they’d be blessed.

Kanika had been working on her blades when she heard Pyrrha’s voice, she looked up to see Pyrrha had packed.

‘’Of course.’’ Better they go together and support each other than she let Pyrrha go by herself.

Putting the blades to the side, Kani went and grabbed her own small bag which she threw over her shoulder before joining Pyrrha at her side.

‘’Let’s go!’’ As much as she tried to sound optimistic, she wasn’t sure what to expect when she got there.

Pyrrha tried not to let her smile falter. If she stopped her prayers now then they might have to wait that much longer, and she didn't know how much longer her heart could take. So, for the time being, she held onto that shred of optimism...the same one that had carried her across the sea to this new land.

She would have had to be blind not to notice the shifts in Kanika. Of course there was little Pyrrha could do beyond offering her support. They were in this together, no matter the results, but she wished....oh how she wished she could just bring good news for once.

Silently Pyrrha reached over to take Kanika's hand in her own and squeeze it. The urge to say something was there, hung heavy around her and yet Pyrrha couldn't find her words. She stayed relatively quiet the entire trip to Esena, trying her best not to get her hopes up and yet when she saw an elder Pyrrha's steps faltered. They weren't nearly close enough to speak with the woman, but...

What if she says no again?

Kanika rubbed Pyrrha’s hand with her thumb, she didn’t know if it was to make her feel better or to sooth herself in the process. Still, she walked with her head held high and didn’t bother looking at anyone who might cross their paths. Too many already knew that they regularly checked on the tree to see if they had been blessed. She didn’t want to see the pity in their eyes or face it really. She already got enough of that with Zandala, she didn’t need any more kind words or gentle reassuring squeezes. She knew her mothers meant well, but it didn’t help.
She was all too thankful that Pyrrha hadn’t said a word yet, Kanika wouldn’t have known what to say or how to respond. It hung between them but she didn’t want to touch it. Perhaps once they were home again and this whole ordeal was done…

“I’m here.” Kani had felt Pyrrha shift as they got closer and an elder drew close. Pyrrha had told her that one of them had told her once a day and she’d been furious. Her girlfriend should be allowed to go as much as she wanted. She wouldn’t let them tell her otherwise and they certainly wouldn’t be turned away this time either.

Somehow seeing the faces of others as she passed didn't give Pyrrha the hope she so normally grasped onto. At first it was little things; assurances, well wishes, and trinkets to get them by. This morning she found she couldn't even look at them, much less respond if any greeted the pair as they walked by. Was that...was that bad? She shouldn't feel bad though, should she? Everything would work out, it always did, so why did it feel as if a hole had started to grow inside of her?

"I'm glad." Her voice shook and when she looked at Kanika her eyes were misty. "I don't think I could made it today on my own. My legs feel like they've become part of the sea."

As they approached, the elder turned towards them with the same impassive look she always had. It was enough of a regularity that Pyrrha's breathing hitched.

"Kanika, Pyrrha, I see you've returned." For a moment the air hung heavy around them, and with a subtle smile, the elder motioned towards Esena. "There is something you should see."

“I’ll always be there for you.” Kanika pulled Pyrrha closer by wrapping an arm around her shoulder and nuzzling her neck. “Whenever you need me.” She gave her a kiss before pulling back but still kept her hand in Pyrrha’s.

She really wasn’t sure how she’d handle things after today, especially to see Pyrrha so crushed by the whole process. Sometimes Kanika cursed ever having asked because of the issues it had brought along with it. Still, if they didn’t try how would they know? There was no way they could have avoided asking Esena and there was no way she was going to head back home and ask the other tree. It was best to accept their fate and just push it to the back of their minds if today wasn’t fruitful. They couldn’t keep going on every day like this.

It was just soul-crushing.

Kanika gave Pyrrha a look when the Elder said she had something to show them. Had another sister’s flower just bloomed? More children was always a good thing.

The extra contact wasn't expected, but it was sorely appreciated. By the time Kanika had pulled back Pyrrha wasn't as tearful anymore and her heart felt a little lighter. So long as she had Kanika by her side it was going to be alright; one way or another.

Why was...why did the elder look like that? Pyrrha's heart leapt into her throat, but she dared not say anything. Think about what happened the last time you thought a bloom was for you. She'd been so excited that she nearly ran off to find Kanika that very day until one of the elders calmly told it it wasn't hers. She'd already been mistaken once; she couldn't let it happen again.

As she followed along behind the older woman Pyrrha's eyes traveled beyond them and up the boughs of Esena. The closer they got to the great tree the more she wondered. Was something wrong? Or had they...?

"This morning we noticed two new blooms had sprouted." The elder pointed up into the foliage and there, nestled among the larger lotus', were two little blooms. "They are still small, but there is no doubt that they belong to you. Congratulations; Esena has heard your call."

Kanika’s heart nearly dropped out of her chest, she stopped and stared, frozen as her yes grew wider and wider. Blooms, there was not one but two blooms for them. It was for them! Kanika wanted to scream it out and chant it to the world. Finally, finally, Esena had blessed them and she’d been generous. They’d finally get to meet their little girls soon! She wondered how big they’d get and how long it would take before the blossomed and revealed the hidden treasures inside.

Kani bent over, hands on her knees as her eyes began to water. Too many emotions were going through her right now. She didn’t know what to say or how to react. She was just so happy and relieved and overflowing with too many things in this moment to comprehend any of them at one time. Had Esena been testing them? To see how they would react? Did it even matter anymore? They had their blooms, they had each other, and Kanika didn’t care about the rest of the world in that moment.

Pyrrha's gut instinct was to cry. All of the emotion that had built up inside of her for weeks came out on a choked sob and a quivering grin. Her free hand fluttered up to her face, hands shaking as she tried to process it. Blooms! Esena had finally answered their prayers!

For a moment she couldn't move, but when she did Pyrrha turned towards her girlfriend. The sight before her was enough to bring out a tearfilled laugh. "Oh, Kanika." It seemed like her girlfriend was taking the news just as emotionally as she was and that in itself made Pyrrha's heart swell.

"Kanika....Kanika!" In a sudden rush Pyrrha threw her arms around her girlfriend, nearly knocking them both to the ground. She was so happy she didn't know whether to sob or laugh or scream or something in between.

Kanika was not expecting the extra weight and they really did almost tumble down to the ground. Except Kanika was laughing and crying and holding onto Pyrrha for dear life.

“Ah Pyrrha, I’m so happy.” Those were the only words she could muster until she finally did calm down and rein her emotions in. She took in a few deep breaths while still having an arm around Pyrrha and her free hand on her heart. “I… I thought…” Part of her had given up in all that time since waiting, that they’d never been blessed.

“I should have come with you more often,” Kanika should have been more diligent perhaps they wouldn’t have had to wait so long. “This is real now, like real real.”

[6/10]

If the elder seemed to care that the two of them were a hugging, crying mess she didn't show it. Pyrrha herself was torn between wanting nothing more than to burn the image of their daughter's blooms into her mind and to hug Kanika so close she could never let go!

"I did too," Pyrrha said breathlessly, "I thought it too." Her words were small, but they echoed the sentiments. She'd been worried; so very incredibly worried, but now....now she couldn't help smiling. Her limbs still felt shaky from the rush of adrenaline and her eyes burn but it was okay. Tonight she would crash from exhaustion in a good kind of way.

"It wouldn't have made a difference; Esena just had a different time for us, that's all." And now that their daughter's were safely tucked away in Esena's branches she could say that with full confidence.

Once the levity of the situation really hit her she gave a little breathless laugh. "I don't know what we should do first."

It felt like a weight was lifted from her chest, she hadn’t wanted to talk about it before but now that it was certain… She felt like she might fly off into the sky with how elated and light she felt. And now they could finally, finally move forward with their lives. They weren’t stuck in this weird limbo waiting to see if they would be blessed. They were blessed and it was time to properly prepare.

“Well we must prepare for two little ones!” They hadn’t really started much in terms of preparation and anything Kanika had started she had simply stopped down as her hopes began to fade away. But now she wanted to know how much time they had left to prepare! Kanika turned to the elder.

“Do you know how long we have? To prepare that is and welcome our little ones into the world?” Her mind was already running miles ahead, they would need more space, lots more space, and everything they already had for a child would need to be doubled now.

It almost didn’t feel real. She couldn’t help thinking that in all this excitement someone would surely tell them bad news, but when it didn’t come Pyrrha was left with a sort of airy elation. It was like she was so happy that her mind had transcended the clouds themselves.

“A few months, I’d say,” the elder mused. She turned towards Esena as if judging the size of the blooms and nodded. “They are still fairly new so you’ve plenty of time to prepare, but don’t dawdle; you’ll have them in your arms before winter.”

As if they would ever think of such a thing! Now that an end goal was in sight Pyrrha had all sorts of plans in mind. “We should tell your family first; they’ll be so happy. And after that we can start building! Or working on carriers, I’ve made plenty of blankets, or...or whatever we want!”

Right right, Kanika had to tell her family. She’d almost forgotten others existed outside of their current little happy bubble. She was sure her mothers and her sister would be excited, her niece too. But Kanika wanted to keep it for herself and Pyrrha just a little longer, just relish and really let the idea sink in before they involved anyone else.

“How about we get some carriers started before we tell my family? I want to enjoy it just you and me for a bit.” Maybe it was selfish, but Kanika didn’t care. She’d have to share them with friends and the world soon and she would rather just enjoy them with Pyrrha for a bit. “If you don’t mind.”

Kanika grabbed her girlfriends’ hand. “We won’t be able to keep it a secret for very long anyway. Not with the additions to the house we’ll have to make anyway.” Other would come poking their noses soon enough once they heard the news.

Pyrrha squeezed Kanika’s hand with a soft smile. As ready as she was to share their joy to the universe she also understood her girlfriend’s desire for intimacy. It had taken them so long to get here that it would be nice to bask in the glow for a while. “That sounds lovely.” Lifting their joined hands, Pyrrha placed a kiss to the back of Kanika’s. “It gives us time to think about what their little toes will look like and that wonderful new baby smell.” She said with a laugh.

“It might sound selfish, but I’m glad Esena gave us two. Having my twin with me made even the bad parts of growing up fun. I kept hoping for two but I never wanted to be greedy. Now I don’t really care.” She grinned. “We could have a dozen girls and I’d be happy!”
