“I can’t need glasses! I’ll look like a knock off Harry Potter from the discount aisle you take kids to disappoint them!”

The exasperated statement, which was clearly Yu, could just be made out from Sterling’s seat in the waiting room, followed shortly by the more reasonable tones of the Optometrist who was probably explaining the nature of things.

A few minutes later Yu was ‘released; back into the waiting room looking dazed and a bit glassy-eyed, his pupils enormous from dilation and fussing with a pair of plastic sunglasses given to help relieve the sun in his current level of dilated, which made him look like a skittish cat.

“…this is not happening.” He murmured, sinking into a chair beside you, looking completely unhappy.
“I was fine, farsighted my bum.”

Sterling reached over and patted Yu’s thigh gently. “Farsighted is nothing, Yu. It means that you’ll only need the glasses for reading, and we can pick them up anywhere. Besides,” He grinned and slid his hand into his boyfriend’s. “I think glasses are very sexy. Just look at Priam. And me, I guess.”

He did hate having his eyes dilated, it made everything even more blurry and uncomfortable. “I’ve picked my frames, so if you’re done, we can head out. I’ll buy lunch for us, to make up for you having to go through this traumatic event, my soon to be bespectacled love.”

It wasn’t that Sterling wanted to tease Yu...but it was easy to. Glasses weren’t such a big deal, especially for farsightedness. “...And you don’t read all that much, so it won’t be you wearing them that often, unfortunately.” He gave an exaggerated sigh and squeezed Yu’s hand. “...Besides. Reading glasses are cheap, honey. If it’s money that you’re worried about.”

“I could read fine!” He protested, blushing. “This is ridiculous; it’s like a trap to… to pull you into the land of glasses. They should only be for sm….’ He stumbled over the last statement. “….smart people.” he finished. “Like you.” He sighed and folded his arms.
“I think I know what deer in headlights feel like,” he added to turn away from the last thing he had said.

“The drops make me feel more like I need glasses…” He added, “It really is a trap.”

He sagged a little and leaned against Sterling’s shoulder.
“… I thought it was normal the way I saw. I’m…sorry I… was an a** about this.”

At least he didn’t need the really pricy glasses, he didn’t like needing them at all, but it had been striking to see the letters become so much more clear.

Sterling only chuckled softly, twisting his head to press a kiss atop Yu’s hair. “I’m glad that you came with me. Not that you had much of a choice in the matter...and yeah, you’ll feel like a deer in headlights for a little while. Sometimes a few hours, and I don’t recommend using a computer or anything until the eyedrops finally wear off.”

He gave a little smile, squeezing the male’s hand. “Look, if you’re afraid of looking smart, which you are, I’m sorry to say, then I’ll just go ahead and make fun of you now, my four eyed chef. No more squinting at recipe cards for you, no sir. I’m glad that you’re going to be able to see a little more clearly. That’s a good thing. And glasses aren’t a trap.” Sterling scoffed. “I’ve been in them since I was eight. Personally, I like to see.”

Drawing Yu’s hand up to his lips, Sterling planted gentle kisses on each of his fingertips. “...Do you not like my glasses? Is that what you’re trying to say? You don’t think Priam and I look attractive in them?”

“Wh-no! No! You look fine! Like great kind of fine! But I’m gonna look like... like...” he waved a hand at the scars on his face.

“Discount Wizard school reject.” He grimaced.
Though for all his embarrassment the kisses were doing their job along with the gentle teasing.

“I don’t use recipe cards, though maybe I should... maybe you just have a thing for glasses and this is how you decided to tell me?”

“I hardly think so. Besides. There’s literally nothing wrong with wizard school...and you don’t have to get nerdy, round wire glasses. They make them stylish, you know. This isn’t the fifties.” Sterling continued his kisses, grinning and beginning to massage Yu’s hand lightly. “I might have a thing for glasses though, you caught me. My true love is the pair of fantastic glasses that I dream about at night. Anti-glare, self cleaning and unbreakable.”

He gave a dreamy sigh, fanning himself after a moment, working very hard to control his smile. “You know how it goes. Nobody is as beloved in my heart and mind as that pair of glasses. Sorry, Yu. You just can’t compare!”

Leaning over, Sterling laughed and nibbled Yu’s earlobe for a moment, before whispering against his ear. “I’m kidding. My four eyes are only focused on your four eyes, Yu.”

“There are things wrong with the person who set up that particular wizard school.” He grumbled.
“I'm not losing you to glasses though, I’ll be much cuter at cleaning them, and they can’t wear a collar nearly as well as I can.”

He bit his lip, trying to hold back the smile that was now toying at the corners of his mouth.

He just hadn’t been ready to be this sort of… normal, perhaps. But, for all that he was embarrassed by his weakness, it was also… nice. That curious domesticity feeling that felt like being part of something forbidden. Like his whole life, he’d looked through windows, and now… maybe he was invited in the door.

“… For all that, I’m going to whine that you owe me a desert on top of lunch. Thank you… thank you for this. Thank you for…you, I guess.” He kissed Sterling’s cheek before adding.

“Should we… take the PDA out of the waiting room?”

Sterling chuckled, nodding, pleased by the smile that he could feel as much as see. “Dessert is something I can do. Gladly.” He chuckled once again and stood up, tugging Yu with him. “ The best dessert that you would like. The biggest too, if you want. Maybe we can just share starters so we don’t end up too full to enjoy the dessert.”

Not that he could ever imagine Yu being too full to enjoy anything sweet. But. Still.

“We can take the PDA wherever you want it, it won’t ever stop, I enjoy it far too much...and honestly, I don’t care what others think. I love you, and...I don’t care at all about other opinions. You’re the only person here that matters to me, so...don’t ever worry about us kissing in public. Or holding hands...or...anything. I mean…” He hesitated, squeezing Yu’s hand and walking to the door. “...Unless you don’t like it, in which case I’ll stop!

“NO! I don’t mind.” He hastily assured.
“I don’t! I was just, thinking about what some of the …the fosters I was with used to say.”

He squeezed Sterling’s hand as they walked.

“…You’re gonna have to help pick frames too, ok?” He waved his little paper advising him on what to look for regarding strength for reading glasses.

“I guess that will make the new tag I got easier to read too; I thought the lines were just… too fine.” He said, clearing his throat and glancing away.

He’d planned the tag as a surprise for later, but he felt it in his pocket as they walked.

And… after all, why not.

Sterling nodded, leaning over to kiss his cheek, pleased that he had been right in the assumption that Yu would have no issue with PDA, and he was pleased by that. “I can help you pick out frames. I would say we can do it now before lunch but...we’ll have a tough time seeing, so we can make a date of it tomorrow, and I’ll even go so far as to take you out for another dessert just because I’m so proud of you. How does that sound?”

More dates always sounded good to Sterling, and he grinned, though paused as Yu’s words really went through from his ears to his brain. “...New tag? What kind of a tag?”

A gift tag? Was he getting a present? Yu didn’t owe him anything...and he hadn’t missed any kind of holiday, had he?

“I… will absolutely not say no to more deserts.” Yu Admitted. “Especially yours, you beat anyone else’s, you should have a food truck or something, we should… maybe…”

He blushed and then fished in his pocket to pull out the tag.
It was a simple thing, one of the laser engraved ones you could get at many of the box stores in their front lobby.

A red heart that he gently set into Sterling’s hand to read.

“Both sides.” He said after a moment, his cheeks warming as he waited to see the reaction.

Oh.

Oh that kind of a tag.

Sterling gave a little laugh that came out just a little breathlessly. “...Why on earth did you get...did you get a dog tag, Yu? Are you trying to tell me something?” He held the tag close, curling his fingers around it. “...Unless it’s for Oreo, in which case, it’s very cute. Or…”

He still hadn’t read what it said, almost half afraid to, but half excited at the same time. It was a dangerous, lively feeling...and he very much enjoyed it.

Quietly, Sterling leaned close and nipped at Yu’s ear. “...Or are you trying to tell me that you don’t want to be my ‘Hero’ any longer? I wonder what message you’re trying to send me, Yu. But I must say...I’m intrigued.” He chuckled softly, making sure to press a kiss against the male’s earlobe before drawing away, his eyes flickering to read whatever the tag said. Front and back.

‘Hero,’ it said on the front still, with a smaller inscription that read ‘Yu,’ and on the back. “Property of Sterling, please return to - and their address.

“Not really so much… telling you anything you don’t already know. Just making sure that it’s in writing…sort of.” He was bushing rather a lot now, the kiss on his ears enough to set his toes to curling.

“Though if you keep doing that, I might want to go home and uh… lay down in a nice dark room.” He cleared his throat.

A flush worked its way up Sterling’s cheeks and he cleared his throat, nodding and slipping the tag into his pocket. “Ah. Very, very cute. Mm...perhaps we should just go home. We can order delivery, with extra dessert and we can go out when our eyes aren't so...ah. I mean. The sun is so bright and um. I don’t want to wear sunglasses inside...so. Perhaps yes. A dark room does seem like the best idea. I know what I’m talking about so…”

He cleared his throat again and held firmly to Yu’s hand suddenly, whispering once again into the male’s hand. “Come on, Hero. Let’s go home and we’ll let our eyes rest a bit.”

Plus some more but. He knew that Yu would catch his drift. “I have to reward you for being so good today anyway.”
