While the past few weeks had been exhausting, Zadia’s childlike curiosity remained. When a harvest festival came through Tale with all sorts of goodies and games she’d begged to go just the same as her brothers. There didn’t seem to be anything that could stop her, except perhaps for a last minute change of plans. Her father had been called out on an emergency visit - another baby on the way - and her mother had already been busy renovating their home. To Zadia it was perfect, but mama always complained that it wasn’t right. So, with half a wall down she hadn’t been able to take them, but that didn’t mean Zadia had to stay home.
Instead, she and the boys had gone off on their own. It was still light enough out that a couple of older kids could get about safely, and that was just what they’d set out to do. At first it had started out just like any other outing; a fair bit of bickering between Zadia and Isaia with either child dragging Lioe in the middle of their shenanigans. And then, just like that, she’d become lost.
Had she taken a wrong turn? The stalls had started blending in with one another and without her brothers to point out the right way Zadia’s frazzled mind started to play tricks on her. The lights looked an awful lot like the red eyes that haunted her in her nightmares and after a panic filled moment the child ducked down in the nearest corner to hide. She wrapped her hands tight around her head and tried her best to breathe. Calm down it’s not real, it isn’t real. But the lanterns were still flickering, noises were getting louder and the laughing….always the laughing…
And someone was calling her name.
It was getting louder and louder, with a cacophony of pitches that made the hair on her spine stand on end. Why were they calling to her?! What did they want?!
“Zadia?”
With tears in her eyes, the young hybrid whipped her head up, ready to meet the eyes of a demon and instead finding a pair of soft green eyes looking back at her.
It wasn’t a grotesque man that leaned around the stall, but rather a petite little boy. His hair was curled around his face like wild vines and the freckles that dotted his tanned skin reminded her of seeds in fresh soil. For a moment both of the children simply stared at one another, but when he moved closer she squealed and backed up as far as she could. Even if he didn’t look mean that didn’t mean he wasn’t!
“Hey, hey, it’s okay! Here, I’ve got gnish gnosh! Do you want some?”
“...wha-what?”
Smiling a little, the boy took a shy step forward and crouched down. He held out a bar of something sweet and...bumpy? It looked like some sort of fudge loaded to the absolute brim with nuts. “Gnish gnosh. My gramma makes it. She’s selling it, too, if you want some more.” Pinching off a piece he handed it to her and smiled even brighter when she took it. She wasn’t sure how he could eat anything with the amount of teeth he had missing.
Zadia took a hesitant bite and was surprised to find dried berries in it as well. Something about her expression must have shown pleasure because he moved closer until he was sitting down beside her.
“It’s good, right? She makes it every year after harvest.” Instead of her crouched position, the boy stretched his legs out and tapped the balls of his bare feet against one another. “...everyones looking for you. Gramma saw your brothers screaming for you and told everyone to keep an eye out. You know, it’s pretty hard to find you, which is weird considering….well, you know.”
“I’m a good hider,” She murmured, reaching over to take another pinch off the gnish gnosh. With her mouth full Zadia pulled her knees up closer to her chest and sat her head on top of her knees.
“Top notch. You’d be great at hide and seek.” He tried smiling, but when she didn’t react this time the boy grew silent. Instead of prying, he simply handed the rest of the bar over to her and slowly stood up. “I’m...going to go get your brothers, okay? They’re pretty worried. You keep eating, though; Gramma says that sweets help the soul.”
Did they really? Watching him leave made Zadia really look at the little fruit bar. If it really helped then maybe she should eat it everyday, and honestly...she didn’t think she would mind that too much. It was really good!
