Okay, so, it was fun to do spooky things on Halloween of all nights, especially when it was a full moon, and Daylight Savings pushed the clocks back, but being chased by a monster was not ideal.

The toothy monster with spikes down its back and tail was not interested in the rock Connie tried throwing to get its attention, and it was definitely not interested when she asked it super nicely to please not chase her. Such was her luck that even squeezing her way through a broken fence wasn’t much to deter its pursuit.

And then, from very close by, she felt the flare of an energy signature. Had someone just powered up?

“Oh no,” she gasped, red in the face from being out of breath. She dug her feet into the ground to come to a stop and quickly changed directions before the monster could catch up to her, and instead hustled her way to the alley where she felt another knight.

“Hello, Happy Halloween! Come with me, please!” she said as she grabbed hold of the knight’s hand to drag him away from the now very angry monster that found its way into the alley behind her.

This was not the evening Belmont had planned. He had been careful, used the excuse of a Halloween party that didn't exist, and intended to escape for the evening to go to something completely out of this world.

Literally.

He had chosen what he thought was a nice, deserted, unimposing location to power up--and then all of a sudden there was something itching in the back of his mind. He was still figuring out the whole radar thing, but before he could even completely interpret what he was dealing with, she appeared.

Before it really registered, he was running along with her, throwing a glance over his shoulder at the youma and then doubling down on his efforts to run.

"What did you do?" he blurted. This youma was far more intimidating than the last one he'd run into, and this one looked like it was out for blood. He ran with the strange woman, because that was better than standing there and getting eaten, but either way he wasn't happy about it.

"--Why is it so mad?" he asked as they ran. He had begun this charge nearly tripping over himself, but he quickly settled into a reasonable pace as he ran, lost, next to her.

Connie cringed at the question, huffing and heaving a little as she held tighter to the other knight’s hand, if only for her own comfort.

“Um, well, you see,” she started, already breathless, “I tried to make it go poof, like, dust it?” Okay, so it probably wasn’t a very good explanation, but she had a reason! “It was trying to - attack some old man, so - I threw a brick at it and - told it to pick on something - its own size.”

In her opinion, she was smaller than something it should be picking on, but at least it wasn’t trying to attack a civilian now. And it would have been rude for her to let the youma chase after this other knight instead, so teaming up was the best idea! Maybe.

“Oh, oh, see that fire escape? Let’s try to jump up there?” she suggested as they turned the corner to a dead end. The youma was still hot on their trail, so they didn’t really have many options.

She nodded to the young man and let go of his hand so she could jump first, figuring there wasn’t much room on the fire escape to begin with so they should definitely try getting on the landing one at a time.

“Okay, I’ll catch you!” she promised as she did her best to balance on the railing of the escape, holding onto the wrought iron stairwell with one hand, and held her other for the knight to take hold of once he jumped.

The tightness in his hand around his almost alarmed Belmont, cementing the fact that maybe he should be afraid. His adrenaline was pumping so much that it was almost dizzying. In a sharp contrast to the fear he should be feeling, he was having too much of a rush to be too caught up with it.

He followed her description as much as he could; she'd wanted to turn it into dust, like Sessrumnir had done the one that was chasing him. Which made sense; he hadn't really known much of what Sessrumnir was talking about when he'd first powered up, but now he felt her. She was different then him; her energy signature felt smaller, despite the fact that she was closer than he had been to Sessrumnir.

He followed her lead, but he wasn't sure it was a good idea when she suggested jumping up a fire escape. There weren't any options; she'd lead them too far down a dead end for him to do anything but comply.

"--Are you serious?" he asked, but it was rhetorical; there wasn't really much time to wait for an answer unless he wanted to be youma food.

He wanted to keep his starseed.

So, he jumped. It was clumsy, and without real grace or confidence, but it was effective; he managed to make it up and clutched her hand tightly to help balance himself "--Shouldn't we be fighting it? --Don't you have magic?"

Connie took hold of the young man’s hand and hoisted him up the fire escape, which allowed them for at least a small reprieve as the youma tried to decide how best to climb up after them. She let out a sigh of relief, but then winced when asked if she had magic.

“Um… no. Do you?” Unfortunately she did not have any magic, which was why she was trying to use other means to fight the youma. But he was right. They should be fighting it.

She was just… not too confident in her abilities seeing as she had to run away.

“Yes, okay. You uh… Just be careful and. Um. I’ll try to get rid of it,” she said, although she wasn’t sure she wouldn’t just end up youma food.

Belmont held on tightly and stayed close to her once his feet were steady on the fire escape. He looked down at the youma with a bit of alarm and obvious disgust. "No, I--I don't have any magic. I've got a stick," he suggested, holding up the broken hilt of his weapon.

"I don't know if it was ever supposed to be more than this, but. I probably could have picked up some garbage and been able to do more."

At least they were safe up here. For now.

"Look, I'm still new at this, but I don't know if it's a good idea for you to try and take it on all on your own. I'm here, I'm a Knight, I'm sure I can at least help. We'd be better off as a team, anyway. So if you've got a plan...fill me in, okay? Otherwise...what, we just...wail on the thing until it dusts or something?"

“I think your stick is broken,” Connie pointed out with growing distress, since he was definitely not holding a stick. “Oh!” she suddenly paused, offering him a smile even if it wasn’t the most confident. “I’m a knight too! I’m Connie.”

Maybe a bad time for introductions, but if they were both going to be eaten by youma, at least he would know who was eaten with him? No? Probably still a bad time.

“Um, I don’t have a plan. I was going to try and run away until it got tired,” she cringed as she peered over the fire escape rail with her fellow knight. She took a deep breath and nodded, as though trying to decide something for herself, although she deflated a little when she let the breath out.

“It seems a little bit like animal abuse, doesn’t it?” she let out an awkward laugh and then grimaced at their situation. “No, no, that is definitely not an animal and it could hurt civilians if we don’t do something.”

Connie turned and took hold of the other knight’s hand, gripping it tightly as she looked him in the eye, expression determined.

“Even if we die, it’s our duty to protect the people of this city. We should attack it.”

"What?" Belmont blurted. "--We're not going to die, are you crazy? Stop thinking like that! Look, Connie--I'm Belmont--we'll stay here for a minute, we'll let it wear itself out, and then I'm going to try and jump on its back. Look, it's totally open right now," he gestured. "It looks like it can't even turn its neck so much. So I'll take my broken little stick and try to stab it in the eyes or something."

He didn't know, he was winging this, but it was better than them dying.

"Is there anything up here we can use to try and hit it?" he asked, and while he kept a firm grip on her hand he peered around for anything a little more useful.

"--And--look, I would never hit a dog or anything, but if a bear was coming at me, yeah. I don't care if it's just looking for its next meal, I'm going to fight. That's the law of nature. But this? This is totally unnatural, and I'm not going to let some monster eat me, you, and the next person. So just--have my back, and I'll take the lead, okay?"

"Jump on it's back? Oh! That sounds like a much better idea!" she gasped and looked down at the creature with great determination. "Okay, that sounds like a good plan," she agreed.

But whether she was actually listening to him, or just listening to part of his plan, it wasn't clear. Connie pulled her hand away from Belmont's as she hoisted herself up onto the edge and, just as he said he would, jumped down onto its back with a yelp.

The youma was obviously unhappy with the turn of events and tried kicking her off, but she wrapped her arms tightly around its neck.

"Sorry, doggie! Youma! Whatever you are! Belmont, hit it with your broken stick!" It made perfect sense to her, if anyone asked. He was the one with the better weapon, so clearly they just needed to switch places!

His eyes widened when she threw herself over the edge. “Connie, no!” he said, but it was too late, and–well, okay, he liked an adrenaline rush. Kinda liked knowing he probably wasn’t going to die, too, but she was already on its back and he wasn’t going to just leave her there on her own.

She was holding on, so Belmont hurled himself over the edge after her. He curled his body and landed in a mixture of feet and hands and stick; he kicked its face as hard as he could while simultaneously jabbing the stick into its head.

He didn’t expect it to turn to dust, but when it did he wound up sprawled on his back on the ground. His body was still protesting from the sudden collision but he managed to pick his head up and look at Connie. “Are you okay?”

Connie landed on the ground with an oof after the youma had exploded into dust, and then laughed because wow! That was a crazy adventure.

“Oh! Yes, I’m okay! Are you okay?” she grinned as she scrambled back up to her feet and dusted herself off. “Here, let me help,” she offered, holding out her hand. “That was fun. We should do it again sometime! Oh, maybe when we both have better weapons. I think they’re supposed to get better the more experience we have? At least we didn’t have to crawl under a dumpster!”

Yes, she’d done that before.

Belmont squinted at her as he took her hand and pulled himself up. “I mean, yeah. At least we didn’t have to hang out with the trash.”

He brushed himself off as soon as he was on his feet and looked around, just to make sure the youma was gone. “I’m fine, yeah. That went better than I thought it was going to.”

They weren’t dead though, and he might go home with a bruise or two but that wasn’t so different from any other day. “...Just to be clear, you want to do that again? Because,” he clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, “Let me give you my phone number, I might be up for that.”

His heart was still pounding and, honestly? If next time went as well as this, he wouldn’t be complaining.
