It seemed like the days were once more turning over and the balmy heat of summer were changing to the blustery winds of Autumn. This meant that winter was straight up around the corner. The thought of cold and snow made a black and orange striped mare shiver as she poked her head out of her den like home. Anand was out on his normal Patrol leaving her to herself. Her children were well and grown. Leaving the den lonely and very quiet, ears flicking Loxosceles looked back into the dim. Pets lined the floor to keep the cold of the stone and loom at bay. Shaking her head, Lox reached over and picked up a basket to head out to gather what berries she could before the frost got them.

Along the way she spotted the strange stallion whom was the mate to one of her uncles. He had a strange name and a even stranger demeaner. Seemed that this one wasn't entirely all he was on the outside. Stallion yes, but he showed himself more of a mare and acted as such. It had always confused Lox, but she never question Saltic and his choices in mates. If he wanted this one as such, that was him. She wasn't about to argue with her elders. As it was, the strange stallion was pawing at something and Lox headed over to see what was up. Placing down her basket she stepped up beside the stallion.

"Whatcha pawing at?" She asked looking at the ground, not seeing anything right off, besides a few marks on the ground.

"Just planting something." Was all that came in reply before Damiana turned to look at Lox. "Something that will hopefully help when the spring comes again." shi nodded slightly, apparently not in the slightest surprised of Lox's approach. "What brings you out and about? Den too noisy?" This of course was a bit of a joke in concept. As they had both had kids along the line, Damiana being before Lox, but kids all the same.

"Yea, the silence is deafening and I needed time away." Lox grinning before stepping back over to her basket. "I was headed out to see what berries I could find before the seasons completely change. "

Damiana ambled over and reached down to pick up the basket with the apposable digit on hir wing. Lox blinked a moment not sure what this strange stallion wanted, but these questions were soon answered.

"Care for some company? Seeings that the stallions are out guarding the herd lines." Damiana asked with a grin, one that showed hir fangs.

It had been a while since Damiana had used hir fangs on another, but there were still some around that were wary of hir. Shi hoped that Loxosceles wouldn't be too put off, but Lox was actually curious. Tilting her head she only gave a small giggle before setting off.

"Of course I wouldn't mind. Things had been lonely with the den empty of foals. Anand out and patrolling. I am sure uncle Saltic is doing the same, yes?" Lox said as Damiana followed behind, basket held tight to hir side with hir wing.

"Yes, seems that way. But this place wouldn't be as safe as it is without them. Ret must be proud to have many loyal beneath her in ranks."

While both were just Courtier ranks, Damiana and Loxosceles shared the same family line. In different means, but they were still connected. Lox of course being in the direct line, and Damiana was a mate to an uncle. Family was family after all.

"So how have you been fairing? Have you seen your father and brother lately?" Loxosceles asked as they walked, her eyes scanning the bushes for any late season berries to gather.

"As of late, no. I am sure that they are out there causing trouble. Father always liked causing trouble and Orpheus is no better. Sometimes I think he is worse then father ever was." shi answered stopping at a bush that looked like it still had some gooseberries

Loxosceles gave a laugh as Damiana mentioned things about her family. She wasn't sure what her father was doing, since her mother and brother weren't with them any longer. It certainly hurt mot having more family around. Sure her Grandmother, Aunts, uncles, cousins and what not are wonderful, but not having at least one parent around... Sometimes things were rough.

"It is nice to have someone around. I have at least my extended family." Lox frowned slightly as Damiana gathered a few berries and stepped over to Lox. "I have just my father, but he has never been in my life. It was only my mother and brother."

"Having some family is sometimes better then having nothing." Damiana said wrapping a wing around the dark coated mare. "I have an absent Mother and brother. Yes I have two older brothers, one never came with us, Neither did our mother, I suppose she is still there, somewhere."

Lox glanced at Damiana as he talked about his family, it was smaller than her own. She at least had many to run into and a large score of kids. Damiana, besides his connection to her own family had but a father and brother. She guessed she could count herself lucky, still it was lonely without that motherly figure around, or even a father. Shaking her head, Lox stepped out from under Damiana's wing to continue on her search.

"At least we have what we have, yes?" Lox smiled before trotting over to a few smaller bushes. "OH! There's still a few blueberries left. Thought these would have gone by."

Reaching down she started pulling the branches from the bush, not wanting to ruin the berries. Though with so few there were this was an easy task, Damiana just watched as Lox started pulling the berries and shook hir head. They had each other, their mates and families that loved them. What more could a star of the Shadow ask for? Damiana moved over to place the basket down so that Lox could load the berries into it.

There were still things rolling around in hir mind that shi wished to ask, but it seemed that the small chatter had taken a dark turn. Scratching the back of hir head with a wing, Damiana soon shook her head. These things were not needed to be known. All those in the Shadow had their own secrets and shi would leave those of Lox alone.

"Come on, lets go see if the open fields have anything. These little berries won't last that long." Damiana smiled as shi picked up the basket once more.

Loxosceles up for a change of discussion and scenery followed along with Damiana. While she didn't know the star all that well, still, it was nice to do something with someone else. To have a friend.
