Quote:
You need to eat. There are archaic cooking utensils and a well in the middle of town. There is an array of fruits, mostly apples, hanging from some trees, and there are several different types of berries that grow around the forest. There are unkempt gardens in a few of the houses, and a larger one with an array of crops that seem to be free for the taking, just by what seems to be an abandoned--locked--church. In some houses, and in a strange storage room in town, there seems to be unidentifiable dried meat. There are no packed or processed foods--only what nature permits. There are no animals to hunt. You can choose to eat any of such food, but at what cost? Are you fortunate enough to feel no effects? Are you struck with some toxic poisoning that fades after a bit? Do you feel rejuvenated, but at the cost of feeling incredibly paranoid and off? Food and effects are player choice, however should not grant any boosts in battle or extreme advantages into gameplay.

They had survived the night, for which Marquette was grateful, but her stomach was giving a loud rumble that she found rather worrying, and as she slid the bolt out of the slot in the door of the bedroom she had spent the night in.

It hadn’t been a very good night for sleep but...at least she wasn’t outside. At least she had been safe. The plates were still right where her new friend had left them, placed on top of the dresser with care. It was reassuring. Knowing that nothing had tried to get into her room.

When she made it to the living room she rubbed her eyes, yawning. “You awake? I think we should find some food...on the off chance that we can’t, we should save your rations for...you know. Later. But...If there’s other people here, like you said...maybe they have rations too.”

Marquette pulled out her ponytail and ran a hand through her hair. “...Worst comes to worst we can find water and make stone soup or something. Hot mud? Whatcha think?” Neither of those options sounded ideal, but hopefully they would be out of here soon enough. “...Did you find anything to eat in here by chance? Should we look now that it’s ah. Daylight?”

"I'm awake," Mamertine said; he hadn't yet left for this morning. It was early, and he'd been listening, observing through the window, trying to take stock of things or search for any clues while they were in the house. "But have had no luck. There's nothing in this house. It doesn't look like anything's lived here for ages. But. The house has something of a garden to the side of it. I think. It wasn't easy to get a good look at it, and there were weeds everywhere. I don't know much about plants before they're harvested, but now that the sun is out, we can go take a look?"

He'd pulled out a bottle of water for her and set it on the counter.

"There are utensils and pots and pans to cook with, so. If we can find something, at least we'll be able to prepare it."

He exhaled.

"...Even if it's mud."

With her awake, he moved to the front door of the house and opened it; the air outside was a little chilly but it wasn't filled with so much dread. Not like last night. It might have been a product of the darkness, or the unknown, but now that the sun was up it gave them the chance to explore and prepare, and to try and figure out where they were and why.

"Do you want to come with me?"

Marquette took a long pull from the waterbottle, nodding eagerly, scoffing as she nodded. “Of course I want to come with you, even if it’s mud.” She didn’t want to be alone after all, and it seemed like it was nice outside. Chilly, but that was what her hoodie was for. “Do you think we should even eat anything from here? I mean, food is food but. What if it turns us into zombies. What if that’s the whole master plan?”

Hm. Perhaps she was just on a zombie kick...and perhaps she should try her best to figure out why.

“...I swear I’m not normally this obsessed with zombies, seriously. I’m not sure...it might just be the fact that it’s spooky season. What’s your favorite type of spook?”

Her hands were back in the front pocket of her hoodie and she walked outside, squinting slightly in the light. “Honestly, I’m more into witches than zombies. But...this is all very Silent Hill, don’t you think?”

"...I don't have a favorite 'spook'. I don't think I like any of them."

If they were real, he'd have liked them less. "...And I don't know what Silent Hill is."

He might have apologized, but he held the door open for her so she could join him outside. Spooky things were fake, for the most part. But starvation was real. "I don't know if there's much we can hope for, for food, but the more prepared we are, the more we know how best to ration the food we did bring."

...Hopefully they wouldn't be here for too long.

He guided her to a grown over patch that did look like someone had been trying to grow things, and he exhaled, crouching next to it and brushing aside some of the weeds. It did look like there was something growing there, and he tugged at something that popped out of the ground--and looked surprisingly like a normal turnip.

"...This is promising, at least." He held it up for her to examine. "...Does it look like it'll turn you into a zombie?"

She stared at the vegetable...or was it a fruit...whatever it was, Marquette stared at it for a long moment, thinking about what she wanted to say. “...I mean. Aren’t….ah...radishes normally what turn people into zombies?”

It was a radish, wasn’t it? It was kind of shaped like one...and pinkish...could you even cook radishes? Would they have to eat it raw? “...I’ve never had a radish before. So um...you’ll have to figure out how to prepare it yourself, do you cook it? Roast...radish? Are there any carrots do you think?”

She bent down and began pulling roughly at the weeds, hoping that something else would be pulled from the ground. A carrot, a potato. A small zombie baby. She didn’t really care.

“...Do you think we’ll get super powers if we eat it? LIke...maybe it’s radioactive?” THat would be cool...or… “Silent Hill is a bunch of video games, and it was a movie...it’s hard to explain if you don’t know, but it’s a creepy little town, dead people. Buff monster man with a giant sword. It’s good s**t.” Marquette gave a triumphant laugh when she pulled out another turnip from the ground. “Another one! We feast!”

Mamertine was usually a calm, collected fellow, but at her words he nearly sputtered. "--Rad--what? No," he shot her a look. "Radishes...This is a turnip."

A few more vegetables made an appearance--some carrots, and a potato that looked half the size of her head. Mamertine stared at it, confused by her enthusiasm, but grateful that there at least appeared to be food they could work with.

"...Do you have any idea how to cook any vegetables?" he asked, wondering what sort of culinary expert he was dealing with when she didn't seem to have any idea what she was even holding.

Marquette looked back up at Mamertine, frowning slightly, then looked down at the radish--turnip in her hand. “...oh. Well. I’ve never had either...and no, I have no idea how to cook them, can we put them in soup? Or...I hope you know how to cook...do you know how to cook, or should we just give up on the whole thing and scoop up some mud? I used to make a mean mud pie.”

Her cheeks had turned pink, and she made a mental note to ask for some help figuring out how to cook when she got home.

“...You do know how to cook, don’t you? You’re...I mean...you know that it’s not a radish! Maybe I was just testing you. Did you ever think of that? Radishman!” Marquette looked away quickly and walked to the other corner of the garden, huffing softly. “...Maybe it is a radish and you’re just stupid.”

He raised a brow and looked at her. He analyzed their collection for a moment and then said, "I can cook this. I can't promise it will be good without any meat, but I don't know that I would trust anything we found."

There were mushrooms growing in a patch by the side of the house but he wasn't sure if he wanted to try them.

"...Vegetable soup isn't the worst." Especially not if there were some granola bars to ration with it. "Come. I'll teach you how to make something. You can say 'no' and not be embarrassed, you know. You seem young. There's no shame in asking to learn something."

He rose, taking stock of what they had. He could start a fire, they could get some water. He could show her how to cut these if he needed to.

This wouldn't be bad. If they kept the soup going, they'd always have something warm on the stove to eat. It wasn't quite home cooking, but something was better than nothing.

Marquette huffed and shrugged. “Fine, fine. Teach me the culinary ways, old man. I’m ready to learn, and i”m not a bad learner either. When I want to be.” She held the vegetables close and gave a soft cackle. “I feel like a bog witch, you know. I bet I’d make a good bog witch. Oh, it’s not cauldrons that we’ll have to cook this in is it? Because that would be so awesome.”

Eating creepy vegetable soup from a cauldron was pretty jmuch at the top of her bucket list, even though it had only been put on there about twenty seconds ago.

“...What if the food’s bad? Do you think that it’s rotten? Nobody’s around to tend to them, after all...you should...try one of the things. Not the potato, because raw potatoes are pretty much just rocks and we already decided against eating rocks…” Quietly, she rubbed as much dirt off of the carrot as she could, picking at the skin with her nail a bit and held the bright vegetable out to Mamertine. “Here! Take one for the team, sacrificial lamb.”

Mamertine gave her another look, wondering if she would be so brazen if he had decided not to feed her. But. He was powered. If something was wrong with it, he'd have less at stake that she did.

He accepted the carrot she offered and gave it one more quick clean before he took a bite.

He chewed.

Felt like a carrot. Tasted like a carrot. Went down like a carrot.

"...It's a carrot," he confirmed, but as soon as the words fell from his lips, something was different. He didn't place his finger on it immediately, but then he realized, it just felt like coffee.

He missed coffee. He missed the wakeup. It felt like maybe a bit of a caffeine overdrive, but it had been so long since he'd had enough to make him feel wired. A shiver ran down his spine, though he hid it well.

"...Go get a bucket of water," he instructed, as the sensation of eternal energy flooded through him. He was dying to do something, dying to clean them, dying to chop them up, to cook them. To ride this high for as long as he could. He walked into the house and found another bucket; he unceremoniously dumped the vegetables on the table before passing it over to her. "Rinse this out and bring it back full."

It was hard to just talk at his normal speed. He wanted another bite of that carrot.

"I'm going to get some kindling so we can start a fire. If you get back before I do, please start cleaning the vegetables."

He was almost at the door before he'd even finished speaking, caught in the sensation of movement. "The faster we get it all cooked up, the faster we can eat it, all right? We'll probably need to clean out the dishes, too."

Next to the empty fireplace was a beautiful, dusty cauldron.

She took a moment, watching him while blinking in some confusion, and finally nodded slowly. “...Water it is. I can...start cleaning, yeah. Um.” Damn. Marquette took the bucket and pursed her lips, nodding slowly. It must have been a damn good carrot!

Her eyes slid to the cauldron and a grin spread across her face. “Oh, hell yeah. Time to become a crazy kitchen witch!” And with those words, the young woman left the small house and laughed, going to find water. Going to fulfill her brand new dreams, and fill her grumbling stomach.

This wasn’t so bad. Not if there was a cauldron. And radishes.

...Or whatever.
