Miovadi had taken over the fireplace to cook, ingredients and pans surrounding where the magic would happen. With her mother out helping with a hunting group, Mio found it to be the perfect time to get dinner ready for her. Considering the season, she wanted to make it a little more special, too. She had chosen ingredients that would highlight their successful year in Kiros. Considering that the main harvest seasons were wrapping up, this would be the freshest she would be able to get the produce until the following year.
She was hesitating starting though, chewing on her lower lip thoughtfully as she looked over what she had so carefully collected. There was a tug-of-war going on in her mind, and it was a long minute before she finally turned to call out. "Kasumi, will you come here?"

Kasumi had been entertaining herself with some beads and a small piece of leather that her mother had left for her. She had been working on learning how to make the beads herself but since most of hers ended up rather misshapen she often got her mama to make up a few here and there so she could make some jewelry. She was just starting to lay out her beads how she wanted to put them together when she heard her sister call for her. Kas was doing all she could to not be under her sister's feet. It wasn't often, she felt, that they got time together so the youngling tried to not annoy her big sister too much. When called upon, however, she jumped up and rushed to her sister's side, the beads long forgotten. "Here!" She said cheerfully.

The sight of her little sister, despite the years that had passed, continued to have an involuntary, underlying sting. She knew very well how important Kasumi and the others like her were to the colony of sisters... Shouldn't she just cook by herself to show she was still useful..? The cheerful youngling was hard to resist though, and Mio felt a lighter smile rise. "Hey. I was thinking that maybe you would like to help me cook dinner tonight? I'm sure mother will be hungry when she gets back. Wouldn't it be nice to have a meal ready for her?"

Kasumi's smile beamed in return of Mio's and only widened further once she heard what was on her sister's mind. Bouncing lightly in excitement she nodded her head furiously. "Momma would love that! I wanna help I wanna help!" Kas knew nothing of cooking but that didn't matter as long as she was helping to do something for their mother and getting a rare opportunity to be involved in something Miovadi was doing. "Just tell me what to do and I'll help!" She said excitedly. The youngling forced herself to settle enough to where she wasn't bouncing around everywhere but it was clear she was ready to jump right to anything she was instructed.

If nothing else, Mio could appreciate how much Kasumi loved the family. Nodding with approval, she pointed to a couple bowls stacked next to a basket packed with bright orange berries. "Good. Why don't you start with separating the berries for the pie? We'll use the nicer looking half of them as whole pieces and mash up the other half as filler." Meanwhile, she set about to slicing a heavy vegetable into thick slices. Those slices got wrapped with seasonings and wide leaves, and those were then set onto the grill over the fire. More veggies were cut up and prepared to set up on the grill over time as well. With proper timing, it would all finish cooking together.

Kasumi nodded sharply in response. "Okay!" She was happy to be doing anything to help! She walked over to where the basket with the berries were and upon glancing over them it seemed like there were quite a few of the 'nicer' ones so she grabbed one of the slightly larger bowls and started picking those ones out. Kasu couldn't help but look over at what Mio was doing as she cut up some other kind of veggie and then wrapped it up. She thought she remembered her mom making something like that one time but wasn't sure. In her distraction she accidentally missed the basket when she dropped a few berries. Hurriedly, she dropped down and picked them up before popping them in her mouth, leave no evidence! Kasu quickly thought she might have thought it through before she did that though as her face contorted as she tried to figure out if she liked the berries or not. Cornetified I wasn't sure what you were thinking for the berries if they were going to be sweet or tart, this way covers them both. XD

Mio was starting to mix the batter for the pie dough. A little of this, a pinch of that... She peeked over to check on Kasumi, lips pursing when she saw the reaction to the berries. It was difficult to not laugh at the sight! "A little eager, are we?" she teased. "Those will taste better once the sweetener is added and cooked in. It'll reduce the tartness without reducing the flavor."

Drat she'd been caught! At least it made her sister smile. Kasumi quickly chewed the berries more before swallowing them before her face finally relaxed. "Well they dropped on the ground and I didn't want to waste any so I thought I'd eat them but I didn't know they would be so tart!" She'd already been caught so might as well out herself! "I'm glad the pie wont be that tart. I don't remember ever having this before. Does it look different when it's done or is this something Momma hasn't even made before?" All the questions started coming out once she got her sister talking more.

Ah, they'd fallen then. "Just be careful. Don't want to lose too many." She turned back to start kneading the dough, but the influx of conversation caught her by surprise. She shouldn't have been that surprised though. Kasumi was a little chatter box when she wanted to be. It could be charming sometimes. "It'll darken up a bit, but we don't get them very often, either. They can be quite difficult to trade for. I just got lucky that I had found some herbs that they wanted in exchange. Are you ready to mash up the rest of them? You can use the mortar and pestle to get it really saucy."

She put on a determined face as she focused on sorting all the berries and not dropping anymore especially after her sister explained they were hard to get. Kasu wouldn't want to waste something so precious. It caused her to be quiet for a few minutes as she completed that task and then got assigned another one. "Is this something you knew how to make before you and Momma came over to Kahikina?" Maybe that was why the berries were hard to get, maybe they were from Yael. Kasu turned to her next task as she found the mortar and pestle. It was a little large so she wrapped both her arms around it and moved it carefully to where she was working, her lips pressed together as she focused on not dropping it. "Okay mash the not pretty berries together..." She reminded herself quietly. Kasumi post 5

Mio was kneading the dough while Kasu quietly focused. This.. was actually kind of nice. If nothing else, their mother would be pleased to hear they had spent some time together. The question posed made her brow knit slightly, hands slowing their kneading. "Not quite... It just only grows in certain places and is very delicate to its surroundings. There is a similar berry back on Yael that was good in pie, though that was much more abundant than this is here." Would their mother like a taste of Yael, or would that make her sad? She tucked that thought away for later. Today was about treats with the taste of their home now. "When you've finished, can you pour it into the pan or do you need help," she asked as she smoothed the dough along the bottom of the pan.

"Oh..." So it was kind of like something they had in the place they used to call home. She hoped her momma would like it and it wouldn't make her sad at all. "Maybe if it's hard to get we should try and grow our own if you and Momma like it so much!" Kasumi thought sweetly. Then they could have it whenever they wanted! She didn't quite understand that it would likely be very difficult to emulate the required surroundings to get it to actually grow. After all the berries were mashed she looked at the large mortar and pestle knowing she had somewhat struggled to move it in the first place. "Well...I don't want to spill any more so you should probably help with this..." She wrung her hands nervously hoping it wouldn't make her sister mad to have to help.

Mio shook her head. "It's a nice thought, but no one has successfully grown it on their own yet." If they could figure that out, they would be well off for quite a while! At least until others figured it out, too. When she paused a moment to observe her sister's nerves, Mio felt herself calm a little further. Kasumi didn't want to take over the house; at least, not yet. She really was a sweet little thing... "Thank you for your help," she said, confidently picking up the mortar with no trouble. "Here, hold the pan still for me, and we'll get this over the fire, too." She truly hoped their mother would enjoy the meal! And... yes, she had actually enjoyed the time making it with her sister.

"Well maybe we'd be the first then!" Kasumi would have to remember what the berries looked like and then maybe try and find them on her own to know how she was supposed to grow them. "Thank you for letting me help make this for Momma! I know she's going to love it!" She held the pan still as instructed while Miovadi poured the mixture in. Kasumi couldn't wait to taste it! She hoped it turned out good and she didn't mess anything up while helping her sister! "We should make something together again!" She smiled happily while helping her sister clean up before going to wait patiently for the pie to finish. Momma would be so surprised!
